He's fed up of staying in overnight when there's a whole field to roam. I don't blame him; they're normally out 24/7 from the beginning of March. Unfortunately, the fieldmate of the horse in the next field went over the rainbow bridge and her owner asked if mine could stay in a little longer. SFB has decided that now it's sunny he is NOT staying put!!!! I love this pony :)

It's been far too wet to do very much at all recently, but the restricted diet seems to have worked. Hay testing at home for EMS pony

Sending it off to a lab seemed a bit daunting and time-consuming, so I thought I'd find out how to test at home. Turns out it's not that difficult! Washing the feather with Dermoline or malaseb weekly and drying with a hairdryer helped me. I also used a nit comb to remove scabs in the feather. I applied wound cream instead of sudocreme but you’ll need a vet to prescribe it.I also used to get a dectomax injection 6 monthly for my traditional cob who is sadly no longer with us. Good progress with the seaweed though.

      I'd love to! Unfortunately it's rented land and planning permission would be unlikely to be given. I've looked at mud mats, but they're not exactly budget friendly! For next winter I'm going to try to get planning permission for a woodland track on a small bit of land I own but it's not ideal as it's next to an extremely busy road and has a footpath at one end. I'm quite worried about people thinking that 'the odd carrot won't hurt' and dogs running onto the track. However, anything is better than the mud we've had this year!

    • @2fatponiesuk
      @2fatponiesuk 8 месяцев назад

      Yes, it's a grass track as I'm unable to surface it. My gelding eats down the nice grass before Fatty is allowed on. I'm hoping to add a sand area this year for rolling/loafing, and to put some removable mats in one corner in case it gets wet and muddy. I've had more problems with wind blowing the tape down than snow, but I've put a few wooden posts around which should make things stronger. I shake off snow when I go round poo picking so it doesn't build up too much and weigh down the tape.

      @2fatponiesuk 10 месяцев назад

      Thank you x I've tried a grazing muzzle when the grass was suitable and it didn't go well :( She spends her days on an almost grassless track and it seems to be working; as long as the electric fence is on! I need to keep her exercise up, which is difficult in the winter, but I keep trying. Thankfully I've had her from a 2yo and she's never had lami, but I'm very very wary of the possibility. I'm going to start reducing her soaked hay in favour of straw (to 25%) so that she always has forage available. If you have any other ideas please let me know :) I need to get back to 380kg for her health and to reduce my worry!

      As my own description said, I'm not a fan. However, there are holes to let grass in, so she can eat, just not as fast as she would like. It is also only on for a few hours and she's allowed into the grass paddocks at that time. I'd rather her be restricted for a few hours a day than allow her to eat everything in site and up in excruciating pain with laminitis.....

      Only Fatty has worn a grazing muzzle, and that was for a few hours. SFB doesn't have a weight problem and therefore there is no need. If Fatty is allowed to keep breaking into the better grass and eating as much as she wants she's very likely to get laminitis which I'd like to avoid at all costs..

    Why do people make horses jump when they are not jumping breed? I’m not being rude I am just wondering if any horse can be taught to jump and why?

    • @2fatponiesuk
      @2fatponiesuk Год назад

      Hi, My earlier reply seems to have disappeared! The reason I jump Fatty is to keep her brain engaged and also to use a different muscle set than she would use during schooling and hacking. She's not bred to jump, so the jumps are small, but it means that she has to listen to me and not go on autopilot! Although there are jumps up, we also school around them, so she doesn't know what I'm going to ask of her next, which stops her getting stale and bored. Cobs particularly are often quite bad about picking their feet up, so jumps, or more normally poles on the ground are there to help her remember that she has 4 feet, and think about where she's putting them! Any horse can be taught to jump, it's just a question of how high they can be comfortable with, and whether they enjoy it. The day Fatty stops bouncing around and being more forward going as soon as she sees jumps in the field will be the day that we remove jumping from our schedule x

    How does a waffle rug work please? is it something you plug in first rather like an electric blanket? ive not heard of it before. also do the coats stay on all winter or do you have to change them regularly? seems very labour intensive.

    • @2fatponiesuk
      @2fatponiesuk Год назад

      no plugging in required! It's a bit like a fleece rug, similar that your grandma might have had. It's useful for so many things and just keeps a bit of heat in. But today I wanted something that would take the water out of their coats but not soak into the turnout rugs on top. I only left the waffles on for a few hours. When I took them off the horses were dry and so were the inside of the rugs. Job done :) Rugs have to be checked daily at least and changed when they get too dirty/wet otherwise they won't work to keep the horse warm. It is time consuming but that's why they're only now being rugged. It's supposed to drop to minus 4 this week so rugs are definitely required. Go to www.2fatponiesuk.co.uk/ to find out more :)

      @2fatponiesuk 2 года назад

      Hi, thanks for asking! For accuracy a weigh bridge is far better, but that means transporting the pony and takes far more time and cost, a weigh tape is simple, economic, and indicative of potential weight. If used in the same place each week you can see if weight has gone up or down 😁. As to how it works it just measures the length around her midriff, from just behind her withers and behind her shoulders to find out the length which has a corresponding weight on the tape. She's 420kg today, and if the soaked hay works the kg measurement should be lower next week 👍
