Exploring a Brutalist Icon on Medium Format Film

This week, I took my Mamiya 7 and a few rolls of Kodak Portra 400 to St. Peter’s Seminary, one of Scotland’s most striking brutalist structures. It’s an abandoned masterpiece with an incredible mix of light, texture, and decay. I was inspired to finally go an photograph it after watching this beautiful film from the 70's - 'SPACE & LIGHT' movingimage.nls.uk/film/3071 In this video, I walk throu...

Grainy memories.

A grainy trip into my brain, where I replay fond times (particularly sunny ones) AD free, 24/7. While decluttering hard drives, I discovered 28 rolls of Super 8 scans. I'd always intended to make something with each roll, but it never really worked out. Four years' worth of film later, I find myself yearning for the moments burned into these reels. Watching them brought me so much joy, and I ho...

We spent the day exploring the abandoned Clune park estate in port Glasgow with our cameras. What we found, might shock you... Except it wont. It's exactly what you'd think. We found nothing, or did we?????? we didn't. It's been absolutely smashed to pieces. Some of the houses don't even have floors in them. It's a genuine health hazard. I just got some rolls back from the lab. I thought I'd try and save some pennies by scanning my black and white film at home , and I was pleasantly reminded I actually quite enjoy the process. It always takes way longer than expected but it really is a very rewarding experience to convert all of the negatives over. I'd love one of these but they're sooo expensive. You could buy several Rolleiflexes or a couple of Hasselblad 500Cs.
Absolutely! Too expensive for the likes of me. I’ve got another video featuring it coming and then no more as I sold it recently. Couple rolleiflexes sounds good
Great shots and an amazing place !!
Thank you! And yes it is indeed!
i really like the video footage. but the pictures taken are too bright, saturated and dont cover the mood of the place to my taste. they have this modern digital, kinda high key, super saturated and vibrant feel good advertisement like charme
Thanks you for the feedback Jhasi 👍 I do think the photo of the main space has a lack of depth! Overexposed it a fair bit but wanted to see all the details & get everything super sharp. The photos with the harsh light on the structures later in the video are my faves cause they feel truer to the atmosphere 😆
🔥🔥🔥

Fantastic job on this video, music, and photos. Hope you get a ton more views on this well done. The location reminds me of something out of the Last of Us
Cheers very much David! I bumped into a couple folk there that legit looked like Joel and Ellie!!!
Great video man
Appreciate it 🤙
Beautiful photos, beautiful location 😍
Better than me, I forgot battery and film. Arriving to a location. An hour away.
Hahahah oh no dude that sucks. Hope you still enjoyed the place tho!
I was here with my camera a few weeks ago! I stayed for several hours exploring every part of the building, it was absolutely awesome. Got some half decent pics too
Glad to hear it!
Cracking video as always bro. Love that location too. That last shot with the Nikon is unreal. Never seen it snow there before, you caught something special!
Thank you sm! 🙌
This was stunning man! Beautiful work all around.
Thank you! That’s very kind 😊🙏
Also finishing with CZARFACE will always get the likes haha
Haha! As it should 🤣
As always my dude, love all of this - we need to hang soon bro - super keen for a catch up, photo walk and proper blether. xx
I’m keen for that! I’ll swing by the shop? Text me if you’ve got my number / email me urs if no 🤦 no IG = no bloody contacts 🙃
i know ur bummed about the mamiya not firing at the end there, but the nikon stepped in for a banger. solid photo. this is beautifully shot. been up a few times and always bump into the loveliest of people. never a dull moment
I don’t even know if it was the battery anymore?? Was workin fine the next day. electric cameras honestly 🤦
@@KevCantFocus Maybe it was the cold? Battery performance can drop when they get cold and maybe that was enough?
I think you might be right! Almost like there wasn’t enough juice in it yeah. Once it heated back up the next day it was fine!
This whole vid was a vibe
Ur a vibe
Hate the music, apart from that winge, goodo.
😂
As always brother Kevin - lovely, lovely work. Still Game at the end will always win the internet haha.
Awh shucks Ross ❤️ hope you’re well mate!
Love these!! I still enjoy following along your journey, Kevin. (Been here since your Bergen to Oslo video days.)
Thank you very much for the continued support! 🙌 I literally JUST took that video down 😭
Kevin are there any more books for sale ?
Hello! Sorry for the slow reply. I believe print culture has 2 left online!
Beautiful! what scanner? thanks!
I’m sure I got these from the lab so I’ll say Fuji Frontier!
This video is such a vibe. Great photos great music great city.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing your great images. I use an M6 and M10 with 21/35/90mm lenses to capture images similar in style to yours.
Great publication mate and loved the personal touches, stickers, photos and wee thoughtful message was nice suprise. And an exhibition....v cool. Happy you caught up with Nic at Print Culture, great shop and guy. I'll get down to see it when back. Catch up soon mate.
Ah KG 💖 my pleasure honestly. See you about!!
Looking at my shiny new copy sitting on the bookshelf as I’m typing this comment. Great work, Kevin! ✌🏻
Thank youuuuu! 🫶🏻
As a data point I found 15 GBP more than fair, and wouldn't have thought 20-25 GBP was too much personally; which would have helped (though I know this moneymaking wasn't the primary goal). Congrats on the exhibition! I imagine you're already thinking about/working on the next project? Has the process of working on the photobook changed anything about your process of making photos moving forward?
For sure, next time I’ll price a bit more accurately for things. Just wanted as many people as possible to be able to access this one. And yeah absolutely!!! Defos thinking a bit deeper about narrative and telling a bigger story, connecting images through the book and all that. So it’s been totally invaluable!
Secured one. Buzzing to hold it and flick through it brother Kevin.
Ross! My man thank you sm 🫶🏻
Great watch .. full respect 🥳🏆
Fully enjoyed this whole series. Invaluable for anyone out there thinking of putting out a photobook (if you're reading this, you should!). Refreshingly honest take at the end, too, re: costing etc! You put the work in with this big time and the zine sits proudly on my shelf! Big love!
Right back at you mate 💖🤝🏻
Thanks for sharing! Keep up the great work.
My pleasure! Thanks for watching 🤙🏻
Looks great Kev, can’t wait to see it!
Thanks very much Mikey! Can’t wait to hear what you think. Hope you and Jen are well 💛
What are the key lessons you'll keep in mind for making the next book?
1. Have a stronger timeline (instead of just letting it take as long as it takes. 2. Order test prints instead of paying full price for a draft copy 3. Convert the colours for print immediately haha. And then it’s just I have a better understanding of materials and such now for the next one so there will be less playing around probably, I’ll be able to figure it all out a bit quicker. 😊
I like to imagine you were listening to Frank Sinatra's New York New York while doing this. Jokes aside, I'm fascinated by the process and your approach. Thanks for sharing.
Definitely will have had big franky on at some point hahah! 😅 thanks for watching!
Very apropos timing! My wife and I are living in NYC this June/July/August, partly for my street photography. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed with the project and a bit underwhelmed with my output so far. Looking forward to getting my copy and having an extra source of inspiration! If you came back or could do it over again is there an area/event/subject/theme you would photograph (or photograph more of)?
Dude thank you so much for getting a copy! 💛 couldn’t understand your headspace more! That’s the same time we were out last year and it was amazing. Hot as balls, but amazing. If I get to go back out there I would just be dedicating a bit more time to “warming up”. I come from quite a small city so the difference for me was pretty wild. I think I would’ve benefited from starting earlier and just getting the first few shots out the way yknow? Instead of waiting all day trying to spot a moment I couldn’t pass on. I wish I spent more time photographing the area we were staying in Brooklyn! But because of Paulie and all those guys I was too damn excited to head into midtown and chat to them hahah. Oh and I’d have shot way more portraits. They’re like a direct link to the place, so I wish I spent more time photographing the locals than I did! Here’s what I’ll say about feeling overwhelmed tho mate. I put about a decade worth of pressure on that trip to really BE something, I thought I’d come back from it and have it all figured out. And all that did was make the time there partly stressful. It took me a couple weeks just to come to terms with being okay with whatever it ended up being and then that actually allowed me to enjoy it, which is when I started making the best stuff! (Obviously) New York is incredible. But unless it’s our permanent residency, I think we gotta see it as one of the best training grounds in the world. It sharpened my eye and skills no doubt, but I wish I didn’t go into it with the pressure of trying to shoot like the goats, and just went in as myself. But I got there in the end and you will to! Just try to embrace it and enjoy it as much as you can! You’re gunna have the best time no doubt 📸🗽
Yeahhhh Super 8 ftw.
If it wasn’t so ridiculously spenny I think I’d be like 50/50 digital / film. So good. Makes grading easy af 😅
Haha that geezer Brian at 08:37 - I've taken his picture before and he never gave me a Leica. Ya swine.
Great conclusion to a very anticipated and exciting project, can't wait to see the book in real life! Also, amazing choice to refrain the first song from the first video
Thanks a bunch mate! Buzzing it’s finally happening haha. Thanks you for pre-ordering!!! And aye it’s too good to only be used once!
ORDERED. Smashing. Top work, loved seeing this come together! Also, whoever wrote that first tune is a musical god.
That’s my local wizard HansGoomba. I think it’s 80% AI but it’s tight AF nevertheless
yass yass yass I’m ordering mine rn!!! 🗽
hahaha no you are not all 50 are on your table right now!
Great vid, love seeing film footage compiled into a fun narrative ! P.S. The drink is St. Helier Lemon
You sir, are a legend. Thank you!
I've thought about this sentiment a lot recently: "I find myself yearning for the moments burned into these reels. Watching them brought me so much joy, and I hope that feeling is shared, even though these memories are my own." The idea of using photography not to record a perfect recreation of reality, but the memory of that reality; and then even more powerfully to be able to get *other* people to experience a memory of a moment they never had in the first place. When I make a photo is it actually just for me? Is it just a happy byproduct that if I do a good job it is of interest to other people?
Love the depth - I think it just comes down to intentions. I’ve photographed with the intention of sharing and I’ve photographed with the intention of keeping / taking for myself. I think yeah, ideally, if you’re really putting yourself into the work, if you’re really feeling something when you let the shutter loose then hopefully that feeling transcends the medium and resonates with others. I don’t think it’s something we really can control, but we can certainly take great pleasure in noticing more beauty in the world around us and make effort to pass that understanding on. But honestly who really fuckin knows! Make loads and don’t overthink it haha.
the speed that i clicked on to this video when i saw the notification
yeah so this was class. i will grace it with a thumb up.
