Definitely the kind of story set-up I strive for.
It's also on my list. I'm going to have to make a video on how I manage to easily plan this out.
hey dude nice vid
Thank you!
Damn. This mapmaker looks sick
I'm using inkarnate, it's really nice. I use it a lot.
i`m just going to leave a something about eroding social cohesion and going too far with lies.
NPCs lying are just part of the game, seeing as zone of truth is a thing. It's simply about how it's done. My npcs lie often enough, and my players never have had an issue with it.

UNRELIABLE NARATOR!!!! love that tactic
As long as it's the NPC talking or DM talking for the NPC and not the DM out of character it's definitely a high tier practice. I think we're all used to some lying as DMs through a few specific baddies, but to lie or be unreliable for neutral or even friendly NPCs is something I don't really see or have done. I've been learning just as much as everyone here making this series. 😁
What software are you using for the map.

I agree it can be anticlimactic to join a campaign late and just show up in the middle of things but not sure I like the idea of the party arguing if they should take along the new pc for that long either. I think the players, for their part, should be falling forward towards the goal of getting the new party member into the group and getting both them and their player an idea of the usual party dynamics. Like "yes, I am mr. lawful good but this is THE most extreme of circumstances, I will allow this warlock into the party to aid us for as long as possible, but I will also be keeping an eye on them." "I'm the loner rogue who is slow to warm up to others, so I will allow but bemoan this decision to bring in a new person." That kind of thing.
It is definitely strange to do. I had to get a player in towards the later quarter of a campaign, but I'd had him in as a guest star playing an angel (I actually ripped off the DM Experience episode "Special Guest Star" and used Kharandar and Mercion. He played Kharandar.) He reasoned that we could get this character in by having the god "punish" him for technically betraying his charge by making him a mortal. He became a dwarf aasimar bound to helping the party save the world and became an arch angel by the end.
Not just villains either. I've noticed that the more I lean into faults for my PCs the more well received they are. Like one of my favorite characters I play right now is a show-off so he'll independently roll for something as the party is doing it. It's pathfinder so if you aren't proficient in something you're going to have a much lower chance of not critically failing, let alone succeeding. So as a result it's basically become a looney tunes act. "Move out the way, I'll break down the door!" *Faceplants into it* "You guys stay here and I'll sneak around to pincer them!" says the guy who is always dripping water (elemental infusion: water) *Splat* *Splat* *Splat* "WAAAH- HOW DID THEY KNOW I WAS HERE!?" My most popular character ever was also the most handicapped by his backstory of being created in a lab. He had the kenku quirk where he'd only talk with words he had heard and only in the tone and volume he heard them. He was also woefully unaware of what "normal" was and deathly curious of everything life had to offer. So that spooky NPC sitting alone in the unlit corner of the room? Time to strike up a convo. That mystery bottle that's probably expired? I wonder what it tastes like! It seems like something powerful is sealed inside this magic prison... DISPEL MAGIC!
I definitely agree the principle works across the rp spectrum. I do need to get better about villains with faults myself though.
Regardless that CP wrote this, I think it's poor advice. Improv quality is NOT the same quality as planned quality. Planning and quality go hand in hand, and not just in D&D--anything you do in life reflects this. Most things in life can also be done on the fly, improv, and the chances that it'll be a better quality by chance, than something with intentionality designed behind it, is mimimal. I'm at teacher--I can wing any class on the fly. I can improv a weeks worth of classes. And in fact, many teachers I've known do just that. And they're the worst teachers, because there is no cohesion to the product that bridges between classes. He said "I find my players don't suffer for the lack of preparation". Neither do my students. I can wing any class and students are happy--but that's not the metric to determine the quality of the class, or session. What that standard does is say 'good enough' is the standard I'm setting for my players, and I think DM's should strive to maintain HIGH standards, not C standards. If 'not suffering' is the gold standard metric to follow, then by all means--don't prepare anything at all. I see this tendency weaving through DM discussions---and I think it's a poor set of values to encourage DM's to adopt. I see this such to the point that many DM's rationalize really terrible practices as good practices, so that they don't have to prep as much. Preparation matters, and yeah, it can be a real time sink. Learning to be efficient (ala lazy dungeon master) is a good start to ensuring that minimum standards are met, but the word 'preparation' shouldn't evolve into a pejorative term that gets gaslighted as a waste of time so that lazy individuals can still feel like they're doing a good job.
I think this is a valid approach for those who can maintain it and enjoy that. I myself have been running a game for three years that just ended, the previous was 2 years. For me personally what I have found is that I'm constantly trying to hold up and hold together parts of an overarching plot that ultimately feels like a foregone conclusion I have to land like an airplane. Keeping all the connective parts in landing a story like that together ends up feeling like a chore to me in many ways that gives me a bit too much anxiety and leads me away from the kind of game I'm looking to run which is a player-character centric game. This is what I am doing now with my next game. I have several over arching problems that can either be independent or tied to each other, essentially factions and villains are going through their process of achieving their goals or maintaining their status quo. These elements show up on their own and either coincide with my players desires, or clashes against them. These situations build conflict, and produce allies as well as villains. The big problems are the kind that can and WILL interfere with the players desires in some way shape or form no matter what direction they go, and far from being a rail road it works more as an unavoidable problem, like a cancer that needs treatment before it subsumes and kills you, It's just an unfortunate reality. What I believe this will do, and I will certainly make a video on it if it fails spectacularly or is just plain bad, is that it frees me to run a game with little to no "wrong answers" short of being murder hobo's. I can craft a series of stories and conflicts based on my players decisions, and those in turn influence how they will be able to contend with more sinister plots going on around them. This excites me because I don't have to have a master plan I have to stick to, it could turn into anything. What I have found basically every time a player connects and remembers a moment it's one in which they ultimately had a strong hand in creating. When a player dueled Strahd in a 1v1 in my first campaign (Curse of Strahd) and he won by the skin of his teeth everyone remembered it, it's still one of the greatest moments in these last 5-6 years (which by the way cut off an entire several months long plot I'd crafted). In another campaign I had to improv a goblin my players left alive from the very first encounter in Lost Mines of Phandelver, I gave him a Boston accent and made him a young fast talking wise guy who just wanted out of an undesirable arrangement. The players agreed not only to help kill Klarg but then made this goblin the head of their underground business which he then took big time. Those players loved that because though I breathed some fun life into the character, they ultimately created him through their decisions, and made him a big part of the game. I do think an aimless campaign played by the seat of your pants is likely to fizzle out and die, but that's a lot to do with a lack of effort and ultimately you're supposed to craft some kind of story at the same time for your players. However, I also think prep is something best done when crafting it on the micro level rather than mapping it directly to the macro plot. You inevitably end up focusing on those parts your players are actually going to interact with by choice, making your job not only easier due to less contingency planning, but more thorough in its preparation (since you know precisely where to put your efforts), and more easily invested in because they actually wanted to do it. Lastly this I feel facilitates roll play because when done right it forces players to take personal action to achieve their own goals and be proactive rather than reactive. In the preset model I feel like they're always in the expectation that I'm there to lead them along and show them the way, I find it incredibly boring and stale. In the end I'm about to see how it turns out starting in about 2-3 months when I'm ready to run the next campaign.
As a new DM, I like the idea of improv, I played DOSI and prepped way too much thinking of everything the players might do, overthought it, and by the end it became miserable. I think for Drakkenheim I will just shoot by the hip and let the players take the story where it should go.
@zacharysawyer5252 it's definitely how I've felt. It especially gets difficult to wrangle in long running campaigns. I just finished a 3 year long game this evening and it was an unwieldy mass due to how I'd structured it. Starting a new one now let's me be a bit more free and allows me to set it up to be improv focused rather than plot focused.
oh shit, inkarnate has jpg overlay?
You can import custom stamps. I use it to import outlines to build over since I feel that some programs are better for outlining, or I am translating another map from elsewhere, like in this case.
@@FamiliarEvils Importing another map as a custom stamp to trace is such a good idea, cant believe I never thought of that
It was truly an amazingly important discovery when I realized I could do that. I'm definitely going to have to do some mapping tutorials on this channel.
OMG. The LINE TOOL. I had NO IDEA. FFS I have been using STAMPS and rotating and ... UGHHHHHH
@Shepsus lol, I'm glad that helped. I should probably do a tutorial on map making in inkarnate and on setting up maps in roll20.
What program do you use for making that map?
Inkarnate. I also forgot to drop the map in the description, but I'm out of state and can't right now.
Awesome talk, sir!
@Immortalaquarius It's all Chris Perkins words, but very few know of the article series and even less read it. I'm glad it's useful though because that's the hope is to get it out there for people to easily listen to.
I started out having strong character goals and such that never got followed up on because DMs were too interested in their own campaign ideas to include the players' stuff, which left me nothing to really work with RP-wise. So now I've basically 180'd and I make strong personalities and quirks with weaker future goals so that my character only needs to react to what's happening now and in the near future as it comes. It has gone over fantastically so far, people have told me that multiple of the latter kind of characters were their favorites at the table.
That's definitely a great alternative because it is difficult to find a dm who runs a game based on character goals. This is the quintessential change I'm trying to make with my own games though where the characters goals are the primary driving force of the campaign direction.
Ty. May I ask a question. I am only a player and I am mostly a power gamer trying to be as creative with magic as possible. This leaves the personality of my characters in a way I cannot work out in the flow of the game. The way I can interact back is now based up on the mental damage my characters have on things not working in their way they imagined. Sort of out of their comfort zone. I want to create personalitys that have a unique standpoint in society whom do not just respond by "Okay I can help", but throw in more interesting lines, viewpoints. And I do realize that even if I drop that power gaming, even if the characters fit into a narrative, most of what defines my characters have to be kept secret (running 2 wizards in tech worlds where magic is regarded as bad and one is an eladrin, so...). So I can't act as my characters' personality but want to. Do you have any ideas?
@gergosoos4652 Learning to role play in a deeper manner is definitely difficult, especially if their personality doesn't fly off at you. Start with why your character is powerful. Perhaps this individual is compensating for previous powerlessness for better or worse, or they're simply talented. People have reasons for the way they are, whether it be talent or need. I go to the gym, not because I just feel like it, but because I want to be healthy, there's a motivation, and motivation is the point. If you iron down why they are the way they are, then you think of what they currently want. Goals are big and should be worked through with your dm so they can be reflected in the game. So the reason they are who they are and what they want define a lot of what they will do, but then think of how they get it. I have a power gamer, his character lost his whole nation and most of his family, he's powerful because he wants to control his world in a way he couldn't when he was a kid and thus did everything to be strong. Your character may be more interested in a level of subterfuge by the sounds of it with his magic, so he may be more inclined in personality to not be an open book, choosing to use euphemism and obscurity when talking. I hope this helps a little.
@@gergosoos4652 mind if I use your comment/question for a video? I think this would be a good subject for me to go over.
Here's an improv tip I've given to every player who has ever approached me in 20 years of running D&D with a secret in his background. "All secrets in a narrative are eventually revealed, or they may as well not exist. So at what point do you want the secret to get revealed?"
Good advice
@@FamiliarEvils note me pls because I am interested in your solution.

Love the remake of the ship wreck. Really brings it together. I've used this now 4 time for new players
That's awesome! Thanks for telling me. It makes my day when I know my efforts have helped others.
I've been one of the players that has had to reassure my dm a session without fighting or other immediate perils was not just fine but great. Like was said here, so long as I'm included every now and then I don't mind having a full session or two where the story focuses more on other player characters.
I have some players who are definitely role play fans. Occasionally these non combat sessions occur and it always feels awkward as the dm but I like it.
This is some great advice! I’m just starting my second campaign and I’ve considered doing one shots every now and then to keep things fresh, but I hadn’t considered setting them in the world and making those events tie into the greater campaign. Brilliant!

This was a great reminder of the need to engage your players in the campaign for their fun and to keep them from becoming murder hobos.
too bad a lot of the first part of the video is just black screen. Can't see what it is you're reading.
Yeah. Fortunately my quality has been improving slowly over the last year, and I've been catching more mistakes like this earlier.
@@FamiliarEvils well, I finished the campaign. Ran with the ritual already in progress and my players came up with a few creative solutions. Took out sparkrender more quickly than I would have thought. Worked together to heal each other. They were pretty excited and now on to the next adventure. They don’t seem super keen on CoS. Possibly abyss since it’s in the under dark ad that’s kind of a cool setting to run a campaign. Or maybe run Pandavler since it has another dragon (they liked that part)
The anger comment makes me think of this, "Mr McGee, don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."

I may start this back up soon. I didn't stop because of disinterest, but because I'd heard from some reliable sources that it could be a problem with me reading these articles verbatim. Because of this, I attempted to get permission from Chris Perkins, but that's easier said than done. I'm going to try again, but I may go through with it if he still doesn't answer.
Hey it's been a while! Check my channel for a new Dungeon Master Experience. This one is for you! :D
Oh shit, I'm so sorry Ryker. Hope everyone is doing alright boss. <3
The first session I finally got a pet through interaction with said creature, was the last session of said campaign due to unrelated reasons. I hadn't even named them yet! 😥 Here's hoping I eventually get that imaginary pet experience. On another note, I don't understand the angry DM bit. Like you know you can just let the player control it and most people would be okay with that arrangement, right? It's a weird stance to take from the DM's side of "only I get to control it because it's an NPC but also I don't want to!" I've seen plenty of rangers and the like control their animal companions just fine and whenever the DM wanted to say "hey, player, your animal found this while they were away" or "hey, player, your animal knows something you don't" they could do that without breaking the pace of the game at all because it was no different from when a PC would know something the player doesn't and the DM acts to bridge the gap.
That sucks that you didn't get to play longer. The angry DM bit is more of a joke, but really it's just that sometimes pets can get in the way, and if a bunch of people have them then combat takes twice as long especially if you're balancing out action economy. It's really just implementation and how you want to play things out while having a pet in the party. Like Trinket in Critical Role campaign 1 did get in the way a lot with travel, and that was a good deal of the reason why Sam/Scanlan had beef with Trinket as far as I understand. And then there is a lot of emotional stakes with keeping them alive, and they're often the weakest link if they aren't otherwise on the opposite end of the spectrum and OP.
Going on your last point about encounters that make the players feel powerful. One of the easiest things you can do to make your characters feel like badasses is to change change the scale of your opponents. Let's say your party is retreading old ground and suddenly they're attacked by goblins. A lot of them. Instead of five goblins with six hit points each attacking them, for a completely trivial battle, there are five sets of six goblins each with one hit point. And when Your party does damage to them, every point of damage takes out a goblin. When the goblins attack, they get group bonuses, say an extra damage for every two of them in a unit. Nothing drives home a sense of having come so far as to be able to take out whole swaths of the bad guys in one swing of your axe! It's easy scaling it this way and just a matter of semantics for the GM, but for the players it feels so good.
Absolutely. That's something I do when it comes to the last point made about making 1hp minions. It really is a great tactic, and a lot of fun.
Sorry can you repeat all that? I got distracted by footage of Laura Bailey and Ginny Di drawing air penises with wands. XD No, but seriously, good video. As someone who's been DMing for over 15 years, these are all great techniques that I can't live without.
I think the biggest advice I can give any fellow novices is this: Play your encounters in unusual ways and don't sweat too much what you throw the party's way. Give the enemy and players goals that aren't just "Fight till the end". One of the most memorable encounters my players have commented on was a surprise attack from a roaming pack of Merrows. In the encounter, the party was tasked with keeping night watch in a ship out on the sea. During the fight several Merrow would appear, lead by a Kraken Priest, and attempt to drag the party beneath the waves, as sacrifice or tribute to a local Kraken. The trick is, these Merrow would rarely stick around to be killed, and using a combo of Sirens (Re-flavored Harpies) and the Kraken-Priest's magic, they would often attempt to catch out unsuspecting players to be dragged down to the depths. On the player's side of things, there was a bell located that when rung, will alert the rest of the ship to the sudden assault. The fight played out in a rather fun way, with players attempting to reach the bell, save each other from being pulled to the depths (Had our one player pulled beneath where he witnessed a bemused Kraken's gaze) and fending off the rest of the enemies. One last advice that I myself struggle to sometimes do: Don't show undue mercy. Of course this doesn't mean try to wipe out the party (Unless they are looking for that experience of course), but rather, don't be afraid to punish callousness or dumb choices. If the level 1 Bard storms a cave filled with hundreds of Dire Wolves, then that is their funeral. It is hard to get used to, but its necessary to keep things feeling exiting rather than pre destined With all that being said, loved the video my dude! I am looking forward to see what you bring out next! TLDR: Good fights are not always "Kill or be killed", don't be afraid to give consequences to actions and keep up the good work!
Dnd is not "foremost a game about improv". It's a game about combat , tactics, Danger, exploring weird places and fight weirder monsters , a narrative and story is secondary, just a context to the action, can be more for sure, but it's not the focus. There is many narrative focus ttrpg games with much lighter mechanics that yes, those are "foremost about improv"
It's a matter of perspective really. Combat, tactics, danger, narrative are all heavily influenced by a DMs and a players ability to improvise. A player doesn't always know what a DM is going to pull out in combat, and tactics have to change. A DM doesn't ever have a perfect road map of where the narrative will go since a group can always make a vastly different decision than what you were expecting, taking a completely new direction. Now the comment may be slightly hyperbolic, but the point still remains that at least for me, the more I've learned about being a dungeon master the more it has been me learning to plan less or differently, and improv more. Even things that are planned have an element of improvisation to them, you certainly can't plan out every conversation like a BG3 dialog menu, and many core elements of your game are improvised both in and out of the game dependent on what ideas you have and when. This is why I say D&D or TTRPGs in a general sense are first and foremost an act of improvisation, because it's probably the one element you can't avoid if you actually want to role play.
@@FamiliarEvils I think I got it, I understood you wrong. It's not about putting improvising above the game but using it to stitch together what happens on is many spheres, not exactly a focus on purely improvisation in narrative but everything?
@@leonelegender Yes, basically improv influences the whole game because ultimately it is a role playing game, and even if you're playing it like a war game your greatest tool is going to be improvisation. Role play by definition implies improv.
Excellent work on this. The flow and the advice are great boss. ❤
Thank you 💖
Really great video. Love your reaction to the double nat 20 at the end. Every time I see it I smile and laugh❤!
Was a great moment!
Oh wow! Really good tips. I certainly do not have the aptitude to be a dm.
I think you could, but I know health gets in the way these days 😔. But you're a great player and friend.
I'm intending to run this adventure with a few friends. It's been a VERY LONG time since I've DM'd a campaign and the 3 players are all new to D&D (will probably make one run 2 characters). Your suggestions are quite valuable and I intend on using them. This will be an in person campaign as opposed to using Roll20 or D&DBeyond, which I feel will be much better and more enjoyable. I'm curious however, on your thoughts of a good campaign to run after for the level 3 characters (and new players). I do have Prince of the Apocolypse and Tomb of Annihilation, neither of which I've run (started PoA but didn't get far as I completely messed it up trying to come into DMing again a few years ago). Thoughts? Logically, one of the other Dragon campaigns (Tyranny or Tiamat) would make sense, but might be too difficult for new players to completely grasp. Anyway, would love to hear your thoughts.
Thank you! I'm glad my tips have been helpful. To answer some of your questions, and those you didn't ask. 1. Don't worry about having one player play 2 characters. You have two simple options. You either create a sidekick (video displaying those in the description) which you have any and all of your players control in combat and you roll play as the npc. Or you just reduce some of the numbers of enemies by like maybe 1/4 the total. Also during combat as the DM hit points are fungible, if you have them fighting a big boss and they're losing, just reduce the HP of the enemy. Remember that you're first and foremost there to have fun, not simply follow a list of rules to the tee. 2. I've been through PoA as a player, and am technically running it now with my regular group (in the middle of prepping for that session). It's a good campaign, but I'd think of a way to disconnect the temples. They're designed to connect to each other which means you could spend the whole damn game in there and that's it. As a player who played through that I didn't enjoy that aspect. I would also say let them fight more of the final elemental boss'. The way it's set up is that only like one of them actually gets out before you kill the leader of each temple. PoA definitely takes work. I think finding a way to get them into Curse of Strahd would be great, and still run the Death House. CoS is probably the best adventure for 5e, I ran it myself as a first full campaign and I absolutely agree with the hype. A lot of it depends as well on who your players are. If they're big on the adventurers for higher / gold hound mercantile types then running some of the short adventures in succession with a story you all craft together would work if you get something like Tales from the Yawning Portal, Keys From The Golden Vault, or Ghosts of Saltmarsh. As far as I know with Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat it's a difficult game to run because it takes a ton of work for the DM to patch together. Lastly you could also try to string together the other two starter sets "Lost Mines of Phandelver" and "Dragon of Icespire Peak." I hope this is helpful and good luck!
@@FamiliarEvils yes the extra characters will be run as side kicks. I’ll take a look at Curse of Strahd. I have heard good things about it.
@@FamiliarEvils just completed the Compass Rose portion of the adventure and my players loved the additions and intrigue added with your suggestions.
Thx
Thanks for the Dragons Rest map btw on Reddit....subscribed and looking forward to your content. By chance do you have the other maps to this adventure of Dragons of Ship Wreck Isle?
All the rest of the maps are available already on my reddit. You can find them in the description of this video here ruclips.net/video/yS29c2ln8uE/видео.html. This is my full review and guide for the adventure.
I feel like this would be a cool setting for a Primal Companion Beastmaster Ranger or a Drakewarden Ranger whose spirit companion takes the form of one of the dinosaurs in Anam’s Cradle. Might also be a good setting for a good old-fashioned Hunter Ranger. Really lean into that Monster Hunter/Monster Hunter Stories vibe.
There is a really cool 3rd party set of pdf's for Monster Hunter that would go well with all of this.
@@FamiliarEvils Is it the Battlezoo stuff by any chance?
Great video. A couple of your ideas really got me inspired. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you! I'm glad I could help.
You're not a butt opening.
