Yes, you're correct. I loved his book facing and living in a concentration camp and surviving to tell his story. Fortunately, Victor Frankel survived to tell his story from the power of understanding human nature. Spinoza's Ethics when studied and understood will give that power of our mind's endeavor to understand the laws that determine our desires and emotions and become free from emotional bondage.

John, it's almost impossible to admit that you don't know. The male ego is too sensitive for such admission. "As far as I know" implies that you are not certain. I am certain, I have studied the nature of the mind for over 50 years. Most of society will agree with you. Unfortunately, human nature is ignorant of their nature and believe that they have free will. Yet, Spinoza, a 17th century philosopher explains it very clearly in his Ethics. Look it up, study it; unfortunately because of inertia and complacency, you wont' apply yourself because too much mental effort is required. Mankind follows instinctively through his 5 senses and follows the path of least resistance. The belief in free will is a great obstacle to true knowledge. If you want to understand it, there's an excellent introductory book to his Ethics called "The Spirit of Spinoza: Healing the Mind" by Neal Grossman, in the first part of it he explains the concept of Spinoza's God.

Life is worth living when you're connected with you higher mind, an active thinking mind that is beyond the ego passive state of mind. The ego-personality state of being can be the material for growth. When you are identified with what you see, an subscribe to the idea that we all have free will, then you will suffer. Objective self understanding is a powerful conscious state of being.

Regarding being a Gurdjieff Group, I have had many former Gurdjieff students that has a major complain that these groups have no idea what the mind is and our emotions are ignored. Emotions are the keys for inner growth.

Thank you for your thoughts. The mind is a thinking thing. If the mind's thinking doesn't include feelings or emotions, then the thoughts are abstract and disconnected with their nature. If the ideas in the mind that includes an emotion then this is a state of understanding that includes reason and intuition. The mind and body act as one unit. I hope this helps.

I found Gurdjieff as a great introduction to the work that I do; however, he has his limitation of the true nature of man and of God. Spinoza is very clear, he explains in his Ethics, that the more you understand your emotions the more you'll understand God. Self-observation from the level of ego goes nowhere. I know by practice that when you surrender to you pain, hate, and anger, when triggered by expectations that were not met, then journaling the experience, the law of the mind will be awakened. You see, God or Nature constitutes the essence of your mind. In reality, your awakened mind is a part of this infinite non-anthropomorphic Beings intelligence.

Spinoza's philosophy communicated in his Ethics is a book to behold. When studied and understood it will change your perception of reality. On your own it's too easy to slide through without really understanding his concepts. I am a coach and mentor. I can help, if you are interested.
