I talk about games. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s angry, sometimes it’s dumb. Hopefully it entertains :)
Are Video Games Getting Too Long?
00:00 Intro
02:06 Games are LONG
06:56 Mortal Kombat & Reward Systems
09:32 Metroid Dread, Length & Pricing
15:36 Communities & Gaming Culture
23:06 My very cool chart
29:42 fin
Better late than never.
I'd like to upload more, but good golly I need more practice. The technical issues drive me insane and having inspiration for more than like a week or so is really difficult. But it's fun!..Mostly...I do like yapping, that's the main thing.

I remember playing AC Valhalla when it came out and when i was a whopping 80 hours in i concluded that it had felt like a grind since the start and that it was gonna 150 (if not more) hours to fully beat it. I quit and never looked back. What a waste of time and a waste of game. The weird thing is that when i played the witcher 3 a year later i enkoyed every second of it. Even the occasional dumb side quest. Everything was engaging. I guess my preference are lower length but also games that use their length well and reward the time investment. Never got that from valhalla, but i am getting it from botw now.
I don't mind long or short games. What makes me mad is if the story is bad. Sometimes, big games feel ao empty with useless side quests. I prefer to have 15 side quests with a rich story, then go and kill 10 slimes l🤣😂
Oi
Elden ring , Witcher 3 , red dead 2 all over 200 hours for me and I loved every minute. Live service games I can’t do that long. Assassin creed I skip a lot of stuff now
Oooh and cyberpunk was another I could play for 100s of hours
Recently got into sim racing now so this is gonna be a fun adventure for sure
welcome back lad
Well resident evil 3 got a lot of hate for being too short so what do gamers really want? Personally no way I'm paying $70 for a 6hr game
I love longer games.
Yes, games are too long. Silent Hill 2 proved this to me. After beating it, I was on a post-game high for weeks. I loved the game MORE for having beaten it, and will cherish it forever. I felt energised by it. On the other hand, I’m freaking exhausted by the time I get to the end of most games, by which point I am utterly sick of them.
To be fair though with the prices we’re paying now video games should be longer also since we don’t have as many releases as we used to
If I have 10 hours in a week to game, I call it a win. At 40, I still love video games. I agree that current games are too long. I have been playing more indies and older games (PS Vita & Xbox 360).
Did you already play doki doki?
I feel like a when it comes to a games length. I don't care if it's long as fuck. Takes me a month-2 months to put my time into. As long as I enjoy the gameplay loop. The side quests are fun. Rewarding. I don't like when a game puts in like main quests that you feel like very well could be side quests but are mandatory for you to get through the story. And like doing that once or twice to introduce you to a new side quest is cool and all. But to like have your main quests feel like side quests if that makes sense. And it's just like senseless padding. Idk if you're picking up what I'm putting down here. But a game like that and it's long asf too. Nah I'm good on that. But like the gta games for example like I've been playing san andreas lately. That games long asf. But it's fun. The side content is good. Rewarding. Fun. Worth playing to get the rewards like the vigilante side missions and shit. Stuff that'll increase your body armor. The fire vigilante side missions I heard if you complete them they make you fire proof. Like stuff like that is good content that makes a game longer yes. But is worth it. So it really depends
I have never owned an Xbox 360 so a few months ago I tried some of the 360 games on my series console and I played gears of war, asura's wrath and some other 360 games and all of them were mostly 8 to 10 hrs long which I personally love because if the story goes on for way too long it's just not that interesting anymore for example rdr and gta 5 both of these games have 100s of hours of content but I never completed them even if they have a great story but instead I completed gears of war plague tale asura's hellblade sea of solitude and some other short story games which actually felt like worth of my time as I could just sit 2 hrs maximum a day and still complete them in a few days.
and people ask me why i'm SUPER PICKY with my library ..
I don't see why you need the prizes from official pokemon tournaments if you're not going to buy into the experience they are selling. You actively take away from the experience of people who do want that, they get less practice time compared to you and are more locked into their decisions and are more likely to accept compromise on their teams. There are already fan made tournaments, start streaming those. The pokemon company loses money holding these tournaments and broadcasting them because they hope it sells games.
Just play the triple a games that really interest you and play more indies and shorter games
Technically my Charizard from dimond, heart gold and black 2 are genned Pokémon. Because they all originated from a hacked charmander i got from GST. Didn't realize that charmander was hacked at the time. Ive been told the baby of a havked Pokémoolis illegal. So what about ny grandchild Charizard from black 2? Haha 😅
Yes.
An example of a short but sweet, well worth its price, is Mouthwashing in my opinion. It manages to weave together such an interesting story, with such engaging themes in a short 2.5 hour run-time. It is well worth the 12$ price tag, especially given how worth replaying it is given its depth
My personal solution I've found for this is the pc indie scene. I find a genre or specific type of game I like and then that leads me to someones passion project where you can feel that it was truly built with care.
Some of my favorite games ever made were made by a team of like 5 people
I love long games I think it makes the 60+ purchase more worth it when there’s more to do
I still love KI and street fighter I bought and haven't touched, im scared by smash, I'm the only one in my group who got mk1 and tekken ive played for 7 hrs. And I cant stop from going back to KI. I initially thought something was fell wrong with me. But hey I found this video
Even though I wouldn’t trade my beloved jrpgs for the world, I would appreciate it if they trimmed a lot of the unnecessary fat in those games.
I have unregulated adhd. I use the hyperfixation to beat games most would consider hard. This year alone, I set out to play elden ring as my first soulsborne experience and ended up playing up to ng+9. I've done hollow knight up to radiance, enter the gungeon past the double lich, a couple pokemon nuzlockes, ended up picking up sekiro and I'm attempting to beat cuphead before the start of 2025.
Some games I wished were longer, some I wished were shorter. REmake 2, wish that was longer, FF7 Rebirth wish that was shorter. SH2Remake, also wished it was shorter.
Immediate subscribe, great video
I would love play 60 dollar for 10 hours
I challenge everyone Install farcry 3 and realise that its not an open world problem. I played 4 hours of fc3. And was suprised HOW MUCH I DID ACHIEVE. In 4 hours That when i realised oh the problem is not me its the games
I like how vgc is separate than showdown where you have one platform that you can instantly make a team and another that requires some time investment. I think there should be a barrier of entry where you have to actually do things in game. With that said it should be way easier. Make EV training a little less time consuming, make resetting for 0 IVs waaaay easier, and stuff like tera shards way way easier. 1 step forward 2 steps back. Classic Nintendo. Add even more QoL to this gen, then make teraforming, the central mechanic, the lamest and longest process out of them all
This video is dumb and unescesary
The PS3, 360, Wii is arguably the best console time
I had no fucking problems with P5Royal, Totk, FFVIIR whatsoever. But five minutes of SF6 World Tour? God kill me now please. Send me to hell now. It’s better than whatever the hell this is.
Thanks for this video!
Sometimes the length isn’t even the problem, it’s the fact that they just shove so much unnecessary shit into it to pump up the playtime. Pokemon Diamond and Pearl locking the postgame behind seeing every pokemon is a notorious example. It’s not particularly fun or fulfilling to track down the one trainer you missed to see their Drifloon just so you can go to the battle tower. “But that game came out 20 years ago get over it!” Ahhh, you’d have a point… BUT THEY CARRIED OVER THIS DUMB REQUIREMENT INTO THE 2021 REMAKES
Some games turn into a chore that you feel like you are playing just to beat at some point. The best games leave you wanting more not exhausted 😆
I payed 60 for Metroid Dread couse its Good..i also payed 70 or 60 for EldenRing couse its good....i payed a lot of 60 ties and more for my physical VideoGameCollection....for others every Video Game is Expensive couse they want ALL Games fror Free or " free" at SubscripsionServices to have more Money for the IngameShop s here ald there...They need Kind of Style or Status with theyr Avatars to impress other Apes online....so they buy a Mount what cost more then the Game in WoW ...or need Cosmetics in Diablo 4 ....By the Way BugTester and Microsoft started to swappet that MobileGameCancer Style with that HorseSkin to PC and Console Games..couse it just worked and Beta Apes begann to buy that Crap ....to feel like "look at me!" Alpha Apes. ..but are still Beta Apes unlike us Gorilla s .
I agree 100%. There are some long games that I feel are worth my time and I can get lost in (Elden Ring immediately comes to mind), but otherwise I'm sick of so many shallow games feeling like they need to be 100+ hours. Starfield was a great example of quantity over quality gone horribly wrong. I want to enjoy lots of different games and that's why I appreciate a good 10-30 hour game.
Yeah I also noticed the ppl that cry about genned mons usually aren't that good at the game so it gives them some false senes of moral superiority. It's kinda sad.
Yea the first vcg we went to we spent weeks getting ready to not get to compete because they basically did a lotto to compete...yea no. We learned pkhex and made everything we needed. Then gen 9 came and I barely needed much time to build teams but I said fuck paying them to play online when it was free...sad that people got caught when SV made team building stupid easy. I had multiple competitive pokes made in a week of casual play...just never got to play them.
If halo 3, assassins creed 2, uncharted, dead space, or metal gear solid 3 came out today, people would scoff at them for only being 15 hours and not worth 60$.
Exactly. People these days confuse length with replay value, and longer games need to spread the content more thinly, the gameplay loop often becomes more repetitive quicker as well. True replay value means when you play a game multiple times, is it just as fun as the first time you played it. Pretty much the games you mentioned as well as many others, I actually have more hours invested and those games than I do many 100-hour games. Due to the content being more condensed and focused, I'm more than likely to replay many of those games at least once a year and sometimes more often than that.
This was extremely relatable as a 30 year old dude with a backlog of hundreds of games, but mostly addicted to playing fighting games online with friends like SF6, BBCF, UNI2, multiple GG games. I also juggle multiple gacha games. They are chunking into time and I probably should just axe some of them. They do give me some enjoyment. But sometime I think I gotta draw the line. They are feeding into likely making my ADHD more severe.
I cannot agree less. You can finish elden ring in 10 hours. There is no need for you to invest 100h if you dont want to. But what if I want to invest more than 8 hours in metroid? I cant.
Wow, this video was so well put together and voiced so many thoughts I’ve had myself, I could help but subscribe. Keep up the great work I’d love to see more!
1:35 - 1:42 have you never met a sports fan..?
9:13 - 9:23 this is why I am a slave to every call of duty. That camo grind gives me purpose haha.
30-40 hours is a sweet spot for me, however if a game can pull off 60+ hours well, i’ll commit to it. When a game suffers from bloat, I lose interest.
I enjoy playing long games but love shorter games just as much or even more. Lifestyle is a factor if you have time to play specific videogames. Most importantly, there's a difference between being a fan and fanboy. Let people enjoy what they like and if you disagree, have a conversation or write about it in a respectful rather than a contest involving who can be louder than a megaphone.
25:40 I think Tekken is way more intuitive than Street Fighter. It's my favorite traditional fighting game because you can just feel things out due to the limb system. Street Fighter is learnable to me, but the arbitrary inputs make it more of a process.
8:54 Reminds me of Smash 4. The starting roster was large, and characters were quick to unlock. This was seen as a negative, so for Smash Ultimate they made you start with like only 8 of the 80 characters
5:41 I felt burnt on grinding competitive games, so i switched to my single player backlog and got burnt on that too. Moderation and variation is key, i think
Brain rot really got a chokehold on a lot of people. Holy.
