I don't know if it's applicable in your version, but I've seen breeding set ups where they had tons of very small 1x1 or 1x2 ponds with 2 different colored axolotls because that supposedly increases the chances of getting a blue one

For drops, place hoppers under the slabs, and chests underneath that. The hoppers should collect the drops and go right into the chests. That way you can just go into the chests rather than risk your life lol
