Why you can withdraw free tiles at this bank
The bank of materials has the task of protecting the azulejos. Azulejos, Portuguese for tiles, adorn the façades of residential buildings and churches in many cities of Portugal. Even the train station in Porto is richly decorated. When the art of painting azulejos and the tiled facades were declared a UNESCO cultural heritage site, the trend gained new momentum. The bank of materials provides homeowners with tiles and advice so that this remarkable culture can be preserved.

Why Portugal has 12'000 solar panels on a lake
The Alqueva dam in the south of Portugal plays an essential role in the region's water supply. Agriculture in particular benefits from this water in the driest part of Portugal. Since 2022, the dam has been expanded with around 12,000 solar panels. This is a good idea for several reasons. First and foremost, there is space. The reservoir is 250km² in size, the area is flat, unobstructed and can...

This is the shortest international bridge - maybe?
Sometimes it happens that a river coincides with a national border. Or rather, a river became a national border a long time ago. In any case, this turns a normal bridge over this river into an international bridge. Does that make it special? The Zavikon Island Bridge is said to be the shortest international bridge in the world. It leads from one island to another, with one island belonging to t...
The Eiffel tower'ish Elevator of Lisbon | Santa Justa Lift
Summers in Lisbon can be hot, so you'll be glad of every metre of altitude you don't have to climb on foot when exploring the city. People realised this over a hundred years ago and built a public transport system. Trams and funiculars make it easier to climb the hills. There is also a very special eye-catcher in the public transport system. The neo-Gothic Santa Justa lift, 40 metres high, stan...
This German funicular is powered by gravity

Funiculars are used when many meters of altitude have to be overcome over a short distance. Two carts are firmly connected to each other via a rope and can be easily moved thanks to their balanced weight. However, the Nerobergbahn in Wiesbaden Germany is not driven by an electric motor but by weighting the upper car with water ballast. Up to 7000 liters are filled into the tank on the upper tra...
I crossed the street where everyone does | Shibuya Crossing Tokyo, Japan
38 million people live in Tokyo. Almost one third of the population of Japan. It can get crowded, but it also leads to records such as the metro line with the most passengers per day, the metro station with the highest passenger volume or the intersection that is crossed by the most people every day. This title is held, at least unofficially, by the Shibuya intersection in the southwest of Toky...
Japan has a unique culture of tiny cars. Over 70 years ago, the first law was passed that made small cars more affordable in many areas of life. Since then, the popularity of light vehicles, or keijidosha in Japanese, has been on the rise. Today, almost every second car in Japan is a kei-car. However, the tax concession does not come without conditions. To be classified as a kei-car, a certain ...
This lettuce grows in a metro station

A company in Seoul, South Korea's capital, has set itself the mission of planting and growing lettuce in the city center. This is done in so-called smart farms. In a smart farm, plants are cultivated in an artificial environment while environmental conditions such as water, fertilizer and temperature are automatically monitored and adjusted if necessary. Even the light is generated artificially...
I rode the world's longest escalator system
Escalators are usually only found in department stores. But why shouldn't they also work outside? Hong Kong is a very mountainous city that stretches from the sea to its local mountain, Victoria Peak. To avoid having to climb the steep mountain slopes on foot, there are numerous bus routes and, since 1993, a covered escalator. Or rather 18 escalators, which form the longest escalator system in ...
Royally Messed-Up Redwoods
Giant Redwoods or Sequoia Giganteum originally don't grow in Southern Germany. I wonder how many seedlings I am able to grow from the seeds? Redwoods are, measured by volume, the largest trees in the world. In Germany today there are over 13000 of them. But this was not always the case. Since the trees grow only in a relatively small region in the mountain forests of California, they were disco...
Its not a maybe, it is the smallest international bridge in world no doubt. Also no customs.
That's true 😄 they would have had some fun watching me walk back and forth on that bridge though.
The closet star to our solar system is sol, our sun
I agree with you the closest star to our earth is sol, our sun. But if you look outside our solar system the closest star is Proxima Centauri. It was really surprising for me that one of the planets circulating around proxima centauri was only discovered in 2022.
@Emma-Wolf alpha centauri was also the name of a PC game from 99 that had planets.
Funny I didn't know that. Would you recommend it?
@@Emma-Wolf I think it's great
We used to make city car this size in Europe, the Fiat Panda was this size and was perfect for the city traffic. I hate that small city cars segment has disappeared in Europe. Nowadays what they sell as city cars are mini suvs, big outside and tiny inside. It sucks. Can we please go back to make cars that maximize internal space and minimize external one? They are better for densely inhabited cities, they take less space on the street, less space on parking lots, and they probably even pollute less than a car twice as heavy as them. Edit The Panda was also better off road than any suv around
Yeah I'm not sure why they're cutting all the mini cars in Europe. The Smart as well as the VW Up. Maybe at some point we're getting Kei Cars 😄

he kei smart has a kei rated engine. the american smart is a 1.0 L 3cylinder gas version.
I'm in Australia, I've had 4 k cars, they are brilliant and because the designers don't have free reign but are limited by size and power they have to be clever.
Smart! Haven't thought about it that way.

looks like a bathroom turned inside out...but you know what? it may be very water proof compared to many buildings we have now XD at first I was like ew, but now...if it actually lasts longer and is better than the usual stucko it may be a good investment. stucko gets really grimey after 5 years and starts falling on pedestrians after 10... which I guess is less deadly than a tile.
On the older churches they glued a mesh on the tiles so if one gets loose, it doesn't fall and break. I think reproducing old tiles especially ones that are part of a painting is tricky.
Amazing variety of tiles. They are expensive but will outlast most buildings.
Which ones are your favorites?
@@Emma-Wolf The tiles depicting scenes from the past, though I'd like to see the skull tiles you mentioned in another comment.
It's in two locations in the video. Somewhere in the middle and between the tiles in the end. That's true, in the train station they have a lot of those scenes about harvesting centuries ago
@@Emma-Wolf I was so captivated by the 3D ones at 0:55 that I overlooked the painted skull after it.
Yeah the 3D ones are fancy. Everytime I walked by a house in Porto with 3D tiles I just had to touch them 😂
Tiles are a thing of the past. I prefer tiles especially in water areas of the building such as toilets, baths, and kitchens, but ultimately they are all being phased out because of this sickening trend of oversimplification and minimalism. By the way, great video. Nice to see these tile designs get preserved.
Thanks! I once saw tiles in almost perfect wood optic that looked amazing. Not in the bank though😅 but they have one with a skull 😂
@@Emma-WolfThe wood one sounds cool.
@@Emma-WolfThe skull one is funny 😂
I hope that the pendulum will swing back because I love tiles.

That’s a fancy McDonalds.
It sure is 😁
Very underrated channel!
Thank you - happy you like my videos :)

In Japan, there are smaller cars. Those names are "senior cars". Single ride, not so fast. It is the most ecological 🙂
In the middle of the video, Toyota's Ist and Suzuki's Solio, one litre car larger than kcar, were included.
If light cars could be sold around the world without restrictions, I think 2 to 30% of the world's cars would be light cars. Even as a Japanese person, it has achieved practicality and driving performance that amazes me with just 660cc.
Kei cars are very suitable for women's sizes. Many of the designs are cute, and I think they are designed with female users in mind. And what is surprising is the price and maintenance cost. Everything, including fuel economy, is inexpensive and may be more environmentally friendly than electric cars.
( My sales car is a mini car - a 4WD turbo car. It is very powerful but has one drawback. It's scary when it collides with a big car. If you increase the strength, 660cc might not be enough. In Japan today, there is a 64 hp limit, so I don't know what to do. With today's technology, 100 hp can be achieved immediately, but I'm afraid of having an accident. )
If such a cheap and convenient car were to be officially imported and sold, it would sell in large numbers and the European and American automobile industries would be in even more trouble than they are now.
A lot of really good arguments to buy a kei car! I see why they are popular 👍
Smart Car for K with reduced body width from the original ones were popular back then. I remember Mercedes dealers were selling them like 1,500,000 JPY in the 90s. Yet the company tried to export Smart Car to America, and to fit the safety regulations of the US, they widened its original body width so they couldn't produce the Kei version anymore and ended up selling the Kei version in Japan. The widened US-size Smart Car with no Kei car reduction of tax did not make sense so the sales declined. The sale of Smart Car would be only good with the Kei car privileges. I recently saw a BMW Isetta parked next to my car at a local Michi no Eki with a regular license plate, yet the owner does not mind it since it’s a classic collector’s vehicle but to ordinary Japanese smart car for two with no Kei car tax reduction don’t make sense. Why does Isetta have a regular license plate? I guess the Kei car regulation at that time in the 50s or 60s the displacement of Kei car regulation was much smaller, and Isetta didn't fit it.
Wow I think I've never seen a BMW Isetta. Was just trying to figure out whether it has three or four wheels, as it was apparently designed as a mixture between car and motorcycle? Do you mean the Isetta was too big in terms of size or engine?
@@Emma-Wolf By my quick search, regulation in 1950, displacement was limited to 300cc for a four-cycle engine, width was limited to 1.3m, length was limited to 3m, power was limited to 2.0kw, and in 1955 displacement was expanded to 360cc. BMW Isetta has a 247cc engine so it cleared the regulation yet it has the power of 8.8kw, which could be the reason why it had to register as a regular car ironically. it’s obviously less than 3m long, so it could be the only possible reason. For reference, I uploaded a video of it. ruclips.net/user/shortsGp2fu_M0Hzk?si=xJAIaQlKdaJR7Xwu The power of 8.8kw fits today's Kei car regulation, I have no idea why the owner doesn't try to re-register it as a Kei car. Probably it's too much work for that, to get documentation of a vehicle built in the 1950s. Incidentally, the mandatory restriction of the power was removed in 1960. Today's restriction of under 63ps is not compulsory it's a gentlemen's agreement of Kei car manufacturers, they only claim it's under 63ps yet many say some turbo models have more than that.

Might be... Do you know how far a kei car can drive with the regular gas tank?
