Bonsai - Early Life of a Tiny Elm, Part II, Making Branch Selection
This is the second video on this elm. It has been growing well over the spring, and now I'm going to make some branch selections to establish the basic structure. These will then grow, thicken, and divide. This is a good example of the steps required to create a bonsai.

Rapid Redwood Bonsai Development, Turn Up The Volume!
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Год назад
California, or costal redwoods grow to over 300 feet (100 meter) and are tallest trees on earth. Additionally, they can make excellent, beautiful bonsai. Which is incredible. The work is easy, just cutting branch tips monthly during the growing season. This leads to rapid development, and in just a few short years you can have a show quality tree!
Bonsai Group of Trident Maples, Spring Defoliation, Creating Dense, Fine Branching
Просмотров 725Год назад
After a wet winter, the trees are growing well. It is now time to start work on the maples and other deciduous trees. For this small group planting, I remove all leaves and cutback any branches that have multiple nodes. This is necessary to promote branch division and allowing sunlight to the interior, which helps prevent shaded branches from dying off. The overall goal is to have very dense, f...
An Amazing Underused Bonsai Technique - Grafting Different Foliage on a Juniper

But with some practice, I have learned that is it fairly easy and the changes you can make to a tree are truly incredible. Cascading Green Atlas Cedar Bonsai, Challenging Repotting, Had to Improvise

Adding a couple of large rocks did the trick! I still have more styling and pad developm...
Creating a Tiny Shimpaku Juniper Bonsai, Fast and Easy!

    • @bonsaitimelapse

      Tree is doing fine, no problems. You are right, I was a little aggressive here, but you can still report with some root pruning, just do it in the winter before the tree is actively growing in the spring.

    I’ve been told these atlas cedars do not like their roots messed with. Do you find this the case with atlas cedars? How do you handle trees who don’t like to have their roots disturbed?

    • @bonsaitimelapse
      @bonsaitimelapse 9 месяцев назад

      All trees can and should have root work done, it is a critical part of having a successful bonsai. In the case of this tree, I didn't remove the core soil, so there were some roots that remained undisturbed. Work on the tree in stages, each repotting only work one section, like 1/3 or 1/4. Leaving plenty of the other roots to keep the tree strong while the section you worked can recover.

    Great video, very inspiring. I bought a Blue Atlas Cedar recently, and have been afraid to repot it. I thought Cedars don't like to be bare rooted. How do you keep this tree from going into shock when you take about 80% of the roots off?

    • @bonsaitimelapse
      @bonsaitimelapse 10 месяцев назад

      Thanks Stu! You are right, don't bare root, in the video, you'll see I left the core root ball undisturbed. Another thing is there were a lot of fine roots, so I was pretty safe to cut back as far as I did. This tree has had root work done over the years to get that. The fine roots are where the water and nutrients are taken up, so you don't want to cut back too far to larger roots. The tree did really well this summer, I did more styling, and am going to submit to a national show.

      @bonsaitimelapse Год назад

      Yes, the tree is doing well. No setbacks, and actually is growing a little stronger. I took off more roots than I was planning, but did leave a healthy size root-ball with soil. If I tried to remove all the soil, then I think it would have been risky. My general advice to people, is, if you are not sure, then leave more roots to be safe.

      Hey Greg! Lot's of questions, I'll try to answer them all. Yes, you are right the tree is top heavy right now, as the foliage grows I will be bringing it down and out, so the tree will be in better proportion. I only have top branches to work with, so it is a limitation I have to work around. I'm currently not selling any trees, but plan to in the next year or so, I have not decided how I want to go about it, but will let the community know if there is enough interest. I do have some smaller Shohin size trees, they just have not been featured much, but in general, I am moving more towards larger trees. I'll try to keep things mixed for the videos. I have thought of doing a video where I talk, but right now I'm not planning on doing one. I want to stay with my original idea for now as I build the channel. But I'm open to it, maybe in the future if there is a strong interest. No, have not been to Mirai, just seen it on videos like everyone else. Thanks again for the support and questions - Lonnie

    Hello again. Very Nice Japanese Black Pine , Do you run into that size A lot? May I ask why the Small Pots? To get the Needles smaller faster? Do you have any problems with your Pine Trees that have Small cut down roots? Your Teacher got to be Awesome.

      Thanks Greg! Pot size is dependent on what stage the tree is in. If I'm growing the trunk, I have it in a large pot. Once the trunk is the size I want, I switch to a smaller pot, sometimes this has to be done in stages, depending on the roots. The smaller pot will help limit growth, which is really important for a small tree like this, as the branches need to grow slowly and not blowout. Needle size for back pines is controlled with a different process called decandling. I will be doing a lot of that in June, so you will see how that works. Right now the needles are too long for this tree, but that is easily corrected.
