WORKING FOR SOMEONE ELSE BEFORE STARTING YOUR OWN DESIGN BUSINESS: Should you do it?
True. It's almost assumed office lighting should be on blast overhead 👆, no there are options. Good video. :)
I truly appreciate your passion with sharing your experience because I can really relate with starting out my own freelance business. Thank you
Thank you! Doing your own thing is not easy. Whoever says that it is, is either lying or has a chunky investment backing them up. Just keep going and don't quit. The ones who succeed usually are just the ones who didn't give up 👌🥂
Nice 👌
I'm so sorry you have to go through this
Thank you but it's ok now. I learned so much from that experience and have been standing up for myself ever since. Sometimes we really need to end up int he mud to make sure that we have more success in the future ✌️🙂
This is so cool. SO fascinating!
This was absolutely amazing. Thank you for being so generous and showing us your process!
Ahh, no problem 😊 Thank you for tuning in! I've got another similar video coming soon so stay tuned! ✌️
@@SpaceForEdit amazing! can't wait to watch!
thank you!!!!!
I work as a Senior Interior Designer for a firm and after 8 years of working for various design studios and the enormous level of stress. I am now ready to shift to freelance. Your videos are very helpful. Similarly to what someone else asked- do you have any tips on vidoes on how to manage the financial aspect ? Shall I consider having a part time job while starting out freelancing ? I’m still in my studio role and want to plan ahead :)
Ohh, I know the feeling. Interior design job can be ridiculously stressful. Freelancing definitely felt less stressful in that aspect but it can get really challenging when there's no work coming in. That's one of the reasons why I stopped focusing on freelancing tbh. I'll speak about it on a video shortly. But in short- yes, have a part time job along your freelance biz if you can manage it. And focus on getting clients who can give you return business or some kind of contract for multiple months. That's how the most successful freelancers keep going 👍
Thank you! I love the job but I feel so stressed and burnt out these days and know that it’s not sustainable to be in my current position (with a very rude and shouty boss) for long so studying my options. What other route did you take other than freelancing ? Xx
When I was thinking about resigning I also looked at some sales options. So maybe work for furniture, lighting or fabrics suppliers as I knew of some people who had done that. But it's not as creative as a designers job so I knew it wasn't an option for me.. there's project management too. But I think the real freedom comes from doing your own thing on your own terms, just takes time, patience and grind to get there 💫
Agree! That’s the most enjoyable lifestyle for our field. Thank you , this has been very helpful- currently looking at potential part time roles that can sustain while I start freelancing/starting my own biz. Fingers crossed :)
Good Ideas 💡
Great video. Thank you 😊
You're welcome! Thanks for watching ✌️
Nice video. Like the alternative aspects of office design. Love exposed brick and plants, outside comming in. Always enjoy your practical approach. 💕
Yep, for me it's really important that function and aesthetics are balanced in any space 👌 thanks for turning in Anna!
I feel you. Interior and architecture culture is not for creative individuals. The job has become stressful and not desirable. And the paycheck is so not worth it.
It is indeed... Unless you get out of the mushy, mundane studio work and get to work with clients who are ready to invest in your services. Then the job really is a dream for creatives 👌
Your honesty is everything...xxx
🧡 thank you! There's too much faff out there so I'm always aiming for authenticity in my videos 👌🙂
Is this video for clients or designers? I am confused
For designers 👍
I love your content! Who orders the supplies for your projects? The home owners, you, contractors?
Hiya! I mostly work on commercial projects and do not place the orders myself. I will provide the client with a quite from to FF&E supplier and the client will make the purchase. I will still liaise with the supplier re specification and delivery details but the pure monetary responsibility stays with he client. I haven't got the insurances in place to take on that kind of responsibility 👍 Hope that helps 🙂🙌
Love your videos too! I also just recently discovered your channel and there is so much amazing information on here, I hope you keep doing these! I do have a degree, but not in interior design. I don't think college does a good job of preparing anyone for their field of choice, unfortunetly. It's definitely the on the job training that does. As far as education goes here in the US it ranges state to state, if you are able to practice interior design without a degree. In mine you can, you just can't claim you are a, "licenced Interior Designer". The problem I'm facing as an Interior Designer is without the NCIDQ certificate, I'm unable to belong to the trade programs, which i'm unsure I need to, but know it would be added income if I could. You can't take the test unless you have a 2 year ID degree and 3 years of work experience in the industry.
Hi Danni! Welcome to the fam 🙂✌️ so glad you've found the channel and it's been useful info. I try my best to juggle between this and my design business so bare with me if there's a bit of silence from time to time. I enjoy making videos and plan to do it as long as I can 👍 Thanks so much for sharing the insight on this topic from the US perspective. I had a rough idea about the setup but this explains it all a lot better. Such a shame that you have to have a certain certificate to be able to grow your business. In the UK we can work with any suppliers and contractors on our own terms.
Just popped up on feed! What timing....great info👏🫶✨
Perfect!👍
big up me making your coffee! i enjoyed my little cameo :)
Eyyyyy! Haha, you actually checked out the video 😁👌 thanks for the coffee! It was delish and exactly what I needed to kick off the day! Hope all is good with you!
Even Deepak Chopra has told others to lie in resumes or job interviews just to get a job. There's no problem. Sometimes people need help with getting rid of GUILT rather than needing help to get a job. Don't you think? Lie without guilt. Do what you gotta do to get what you want. Each to their own.
Not sure if I can agree with this one.. you can of course do what you want but the lies will soon enough catch up with you. If you're a person who can improvise and deal with issues on the spot then you might get away with it but if you can't... Then you'll be in trouble and risk looking like a fool and loosing the position after the probo period. And in some way the whole 'fakeness' will then follow you for the rest of your career. There are too many people out there who talk the talk but they haven't actually walked the walk which causes a lot of issues down the line.
@@SpaceForEdit you can lie to human resources. It's ok. They are not in contact with your boss or coworkers.
Another way to get your first clients is to get a business card and distribute it through interior design stores where they may have clients who need professional advice. And to have a good website with a good portfolio and maybe offer consultations on interior design and charge for that.
Good shout! 👌
How about being self-employed right away to avoid climbing the social ladder that way? What do you think?
There is some gains there but it all depends how well you are prepared for the self employed journey. I think there is a lot that you can learn from being an employee. And after a couple of years you can go out on your own as you've gathered a lot of knowledge about the industry 👍
@@SpaceForEdit you should make a video about self-employment. How do you promote yourself from now onwards?
Was a great video. We aren't meant to be perfect 💕. Years ago I didn't have the mindset like I have now to pursue... The gift was always there, but not the correct mindset. So important. 🌺🌸💮
Absolutely! And so important to learn from it all as well 👍 Thanks for tuning in 🙂
I live in Wyoming, USA. After being a stay at home mama for 10 years I got a job as an interior designer making $26/hr. I had graduated with a bachelors degree and masters degree back in 2011. I worked while in school starting at $7/hr, then $10/hr internship, then a graduate assistant at $15/hr. Then was offered a job at $16/hr back In 2012 that I turned down to stay at home with our first kiddo.
Oh wow, well done for jumping back into the industry! How are you feeling about it? And thank you so much for sharing the insights! As I compare it to the UK average, it does seem higher but then again your cost of living could be higher etc. Do you feel like your wage is fair compared to the work that you're putting in?
@@SpaceForEdit I do think the wage is ok but honestly would probably make more if I was working for myself and doing contract work… maybe. I’m not ready to go it on my own just yet. The networking, marketing and essentially getting my own jobs sounds like a bit much for the time I have to invest. I work for an architect and there hasn’t been a lot of interior design work in what they have done recently, so I feel a little stuck. Plus I have a newborn baby, still on maternity leave for another week… trying to figure out how to get work done with him in my arms.
❤ love to know more about the market on Europe
it would be interesting, right? I find it that the salaries are very much tied to the overall economy level within the country.
Thanks🎉
🙂👍 Glad you found it useful!
Great advise 👏
I think your services should be consistently priced based on the amount of work and size of the project.
Absolutely 💯 improving and upgrading with every project 👍
Still at establishing business stage, have an 'idea' towards pricing. Always nice to get an honest, raw perspective of the industry from you Cynthia. Thank you 🫶
Exciting times ahead Anna! 👏 Hope it goes well for you. The more experience you get the clearer the vision you'll have on what you're able to charge 👍 And of course you can always jump on the mastermind if you want to dive deeper.
thank you for covering this! Im pivoting careers from event sustainability to interior design and this is so incredibly important!!
Oh wow, that's an interesting change. Hope it all goes well. And yes, sustainability is one of the main topics/challenges in the design industry now 👍
Remember to share where you are in your interior design career journey and what the average pay for your position in your country! And if you need help with figuring out your design fees, then you can find the sign up link to my mastermind in the description box! Speak soon, S 😉
Great video! I’m on my interior design journey now… just finished an internship finally getting something in 😊
Ahh, congrats! You've got your foot in the door and now it's only up from here 👌✊ Hope the next opportunity is a good one!!
Thanks sooo much ❤
You're welcome! 🙂👌

this is so helpful! im majoring in interior rn and currently studying office space! tried to look for videos like this before making my floorplan:)
Oh cool, hope you've got some inspo out of this! Good luck with your studies😊 I'm.making a new one about office design but it will probably be another month until it comes out 👍
Oh actually, maybe my concept design video could be useful as well. I talk about a recent office project I worked on there 👍 might be able to find some nuggets there!
This intro question is describing me. I've been building my confidence by binging all your videos.
You'll get there Aby 👌😊 it does come with time and experience but you gotta believe in yourself too 💯 you got this!!
Thanks for this, is it possible if you have an example project report to go through or something? As an architect student (John 3:16❤)
The closest you will probably get to is my latest video on concept design and the cafe design one where Ive vlogged the design process from initial meetings to site install and final reveal. Hope these will help 👍😊

Everything starts with the brief and the client :) Without them we don't have a project. Glad you've found this useful Susan!
This is really insightful, thank you
