Flower Farm Planning with a Plum Paper Planner
This is a short video showing how I use a Plum Paper Planner, 8.5 x 11 size, Notes & Days format to plan out all of the moving parts on the flower farm. Whether you garden for pleasure or farm flowers for profit, good planning is key! Each month has its Tasks, things to Order, things to Sow and Grow, and things to Harvest. Whether you use a paper or electronic version, a planner for the farm is a good thing!
Everythng used in this video has been purchased by me. There is no sponsorship or freebies for evaluation. What you see is what I use.

We made some adjustments and now know how to do this right in the future. This video is not sponsore...

Starting Seeds in Unheated Greenhouse Using a Heat Table

Hey ya'll! Today I'm starting seeds for hardy annuals (germination temps 50-55 degrees) in a small unheated greenhouse in Zone 7a, Virginia. This greenhouse is small and made with polycarbonate panels that hold in heat fairly well. Seeds that need a winter chill period are started without bottom heat; other seeds are placed in plug trays on a custom heated shelf using moist sand and a heating c...

$725 Farm truck. 1999 F250 new to us truck.
Просмотров 1184 года назад
There comes a time in every farmer's life when he needs a new truck! We paid only $725 for this 1999 F250 with an extended cab and long bed. The catch is that this truck will need either a new head gasket (relatively inexpenive but labor intensive) or new engine. Which do you think it will be?

    Can I just broadcast lavender seed onto bare soil for a "field" of lavender? Or does it have to be in rows?

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 10 месяцев назад

      You could try; however, it is very difficult to direct seed lavender. Rooting the prunnings is much easier. Also lavendet need air flow between each plant. Good luck!

    Looking back, what course have you found to be most valuable in your farming journey? I have read many books and watched/listened to many interviews and podcasts. I am not sure which if any of these courses would be most useful to me. I am interested to take the smaller course on setting up Cooperatives that Lisa has on her site.

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm Год назад

      They each had different things I found useful. I took away what I liked and ignored some of the things I knew from experience didn't work for me. All of the courses are still available to me along with updated info from subsequent classes. In that respect I wouldn't take a course I didn't have future access to.

    Is that the best way to plant. Directly into gravel? How well did your plants grow? Thanks

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 2 года назад

      It depends on your soils. We have heavy red clay native soil which lavender does not like. Raised gravel works in our situation to keep the roots from getting water logged. We also set the plants with their potting soil. Planting bare roots or small plugs directly into gravel without some soil doesn't work well. Growing lavender in pots also works well.

    Is that lavender you plant on gravel? imposible

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 2 года назад

      Yes, it is planted in gravel. It is a type called 'crusher run' here and it contains lots of fines. I also add some soil mix at planting. If you have ever seen a gravel drive you know weeds and grasses will grow in it. Lavender does too.

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 2 года назад

      as long as the sand is a fine sand, has no salt or chemicals (to keep it from clumping) it is fine to sprinkle in a thin layer.

    I have acreage that is likely to flood in the Spring. Would this kill the Lavender plants?

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 2 года назад

      Lavender does not like wet soil. The plants would likely die once the floods come.

  • @dirtdiggerjerry
    @dirtdiggerjerry 3 года назад

    What is the medium that you're planting the lavender in?

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 3 года назад

      The plugs are planted in Promix fast draining potting medium to grow a bigger root system for several weeks and then the rootball with the mix is planted in a small gravel blend 8 inches deep above the soil line.

      @@graystemfarm why gravel? I want to start a lavender plot. Thanks

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 2 года назад

      @@oldpioneerfarm5673 Our native soil is heavy red clay. Lavender does not like heavy soils that keep the root zone wet, therefore we plant in raised gravel rows for good drainage. Eventually the roots make it down into the native soil, but the mass is not getting wet. What you plant in depends on your native soils. If it's sandy, you need to improve it with compost or water holding soils. If it's good soil, don't fertilizer or water excessively --- keep it on the dry side. Lavender also prefers neutral to alkaline over acidic so lime is also good to add.

    I'm up in rural Alaska so do quite a bit of my gardening supply shopping online. Could you let me know what those particular trays are called and the brand?

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 3 года назад

      If you have a business sales tax ID for Alaska, you can purchase wholesale from Griffin Greenhouse & Supply which is where I get mine. The trays are called 72 plug trays. A base tray for the water is also very handy. That way you can bottom water. I've also purchased retail from local garden centers, but it's quite a bit pricier. You can also purchase retail from Greenhouse Megastore online.

    Nice, we're planting 200 this spring.😁 How are you amending the soil?🤗

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 3 года назад

      We amended the soil with lime per recommendations (soils test) and tilled it in. They we put down the gravel and plant in the gravel with the soils from the grow out pot. We lightly fertilize in the spring with some fish & kelp liquid fertilizer and that's it for the season.

    I’m in North east Tn and in 7 B is your greenhouse heated for starting seed that early

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 3 года назад

      Hi Richard: I am in zone 7a. The greenhouse is fairly small with polycarbonate panels vs. plastic sheeting so it has a little more insulation value but not a alot. I also use a heat table we built. It maintains a creates a constant soil temp of 55 degrees at this time of year and sufficient moisture that no plastic covers are needed. When the temps are really cold as this week, I cover the plants with frost cloth (remay fabric) to protect the green bits. If you want to use a smaller greenhouse or plastic sheeting, heat tables or heat mats are a necessity. And covering with thicker fabric and plastic domes is also useful.

    Are you covering those seeds with something or it’s leaving in the ingested greenhouse?

    • @graystemfarm
      @graystemfarm 3 года назад

      The seed trays are not covered with anything. The heat tray with damp sand instead of a heat mat provides the right amount of humidity and maintains soil temps around 55 degrees. The seeds started in this video are only those that will germinate at 55-60 degrees. Hardy annual flowers like sweet peas and cold hardy veggies like kale and arugula. If we're expecting a really cold snap, I lplace a piece of lightweight remay fabric over the seed trays and seedlings.
