This wide spot in the road once carried a population of around 400. It served as a refuge from the heat and the arduous journey through the vast Nevada desert. Now it stands in ruins for tourists to wander through and take pictures. I hope you enjoy the tour.

The history of Warm Springs goes back to 1866 when it served as a stopover for stagecoaches. Over time it evolved into comfortable stopover for a more recent traveler. As far as I can tell, it's demise came sometime in the 1970's.

i'm 64 yrs. old now but i spent a night in union with my family as a kid around 1971-1972. i slept next to an old brick bldg. that had a plaque inside stating that "samuel clements" (mark twain) had stayed a few nights there. a lot of silver and copper mines in that area. at that time there were still a few houses with folks still livingt there full time but it was already recognized as an official ghost town.

The carcass at 08:40, next to the auger, is a mower frame. The open gear would most likely make it a John Deere #4. A few other manufactures also had an open gear box, so with out stamped numbers hard to say. 10:40 more the same. Nice little stop.

Ive been going to this town since I was a little girl with my parents and sister. My dad had a friend that owned the Taylor's house. We would go up every summer. When I turned about 42, I left the Bay Area and moved to Plumas County near Graeagle. I never went back. Ive been here 20 years now. My sister has a house between Sierra City and Downieville. I love this area. I hope you went on Gold Lake Rd. and checked out Sand Pond and Sardine Lake and the resort behind it. You have a beautiful view of the Buttes from there.

Route 447 north of Nixon heading towards the Black Rock desert where burning Man is held has been of interest to me over the past several years as well. I am of the opinion that the organized looking " circles and scalloped regular structures". of tufa are influenced by blue green algae or other similar biological activity during formation. Think of the looks of the underwater "dark smokers" , geological Vents under the ocean that have regular formations from bioactivities. Lake Lahontin covered this entire area all the way to salt lake City up to approximately 13,000 years ago or so. Though not necessarily supported by the intellagence of somebody that knows what they're talking about, in my research on this area, the following speculation is added for your consideration: 😮 The Pliestocene was the prior age before the one we are in now, which ended approximately 11 ,000 to 12,000 years ago. Coincident with that era, was the rise of the Sierra Nevada. The Sierra Nevada is formed by a broken- off piece of the North American plate caused by the rapid subduction of the Farallon plate over the last million and a half years or so. The unusual forces that resulted in this huge uplift cracked off a "chunk" of the N.A. plate, resulting in a very steep eastern "face"of the imoutain range. Because the Pluestocene was so much wetter and so much colder than currently, the Eastern slope of the broken section of the internal portion exposed of the North American plate was subject to rapid erosion caused by glaciers and water flow . This resulted in many subterranean flows of water in a downward direction (of course,) which generated many of the springs which arose underneath Lake Lahontan, which gave rise to the tufa towers. It is interesting to note, and was a surprise to me to find out, that calcium carbonate is much more soluble in cold water than warm water. Therefore, the under ground springs which rose up from the floor of Lake Lahontan consisted of very cold water saturated with with calcium carbonate which had been collected by the grinding glaciers and water flow down the eastern slope mentioned above, which would surface under the water, in warmer water, and precipitate calcium carbonate in the form of the tuffa towers that's the subject of this thread. Most tufa 30:53 of significant volume was collected over periods of time measured in thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands of years. Slowly. 😅 I did not know that this note was going to turn out to be as long as it is. My study of this situation a rose during a process which I have Pursued while attempting to derive a method to effect direct air capture of carbon dioxide, more of which information can be found at www earththrive.net. The accumulated alkaline materials located beneath the playas of Northern Nevada constitute enough material to entrap chemically all of the carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere , for geological periods of time. Being merely a safety engineer, I can garner no attention to the premise. Thank you for jogging my memory in regard to this matter. Those are definitely unique formations, and demonstrative of the fact that we live in a wonderful world indeed. We are all in this togerher...❤

I used to hunt Deer on McDonald Peak, east of Termo, in the early and mid 70’s…my buddies and I would stop in for a beer or two during our trip to gas the jeeps and trucks…I do remember that the general store had a beer-wine bar, and I believe it had gas pumps as well….inside the bar there was a collection of various live rifle and pistol shells on a shelf behind the bar, and there were maybe 1/2 dozen mounted deer heads…deer taken on McDonald Peak and the surrounding mountains…one of them was later measured, then entered in the Boone and Crockett Record Book as a trophy class mule deer

That's my town, I 💜 it here, for a small lil town there is a lot of events for the whole town like the county fair, the high Sierra music festival, Holiday events etc. on top of all the mountain nature activities, the people are nicer, locals know each other & when we see each other in town (even people we don't know) we actually wave & talk to each other, the local mom n pop shops are friendly, there is very low crime here, I'm originally from the Bay area (about 20 years ago) but I will never go back to live there....this town/mountain & nature living will change ya....the main downside is the fires all around!!!! Other than that please come visit, we love visitors!!!! 😊💜🏞️🌲🦅🐻🐺🦊🦝🦨🐿️🦉🦅
