Tascam 424 + effects // Ambient Playbox
I was playing around with Native Instruments Playbox and recorded four motifs to a tape loop. Unfortunately Tascam 424 was a bit temperamental today (or maybe it was the tape) which caused the device to randomly stop while recording. I eventually decided to settle with half of the arrangement.
The main out goes straight to my mixer. The effects send is going to the Whammy 5, the particle 2 and the BigSky before going into the mixer.
I'm using the Whammy to pitch shift the effects send to a fifth about halfway through.
The particle 2 is used in reverse mode and the BigSky is set to the Swell algorithm.

Casio SK-1 + effects // I Dream Of Wires
Просмотров 1,6 тыс.День назад
Another simple short running into quite an effects chain. I’m harmonising the SK-1 flute with the Whammy 5 to thicken the sound. The Particle 2 is used in reverse mode, I tweaked quite a lot of hidden parameters in the web editor to add a bit of randomness. The Volante adds saturated delay, I’m using an expression pedal to control the feedback. The BigSky is used in Cloud mode.
Yamaha Reface CP, Boss SD-1, Strymon Volante and Chase Bliss Mood MK2 // Distorted Lullaby
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.21 день назад
A simple melody that was quite challenging to play due to the small keys on the Reface CP. I don’t use the Boss SD-1 that much but I really like how it complements the Wurlitzer here. The Volante is added for long delays and the Mood is used in Reverb/Stretch mode.
Moog Subsequent 37 + Chase Bliss Mood MK2 // Randomised Arpeggios
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.Месяц назад
I created pretty basic one oscillator patch and set the arpeggiator to random mode with a fast bpm. This makes the Subsequent 37 belt out near ratcheting notes that are sustained and pitched by the Mood resulting in lovely textures. The Mood is set to tape/reverb mode with miso, spread, latch and no dub enabled.
Tascam 424, Red Panda Particle 2 and Strymon BigSky // Granular Tape

I layered a U-he Diva patch with Native Instruments Una Corda piano and created 4 slowly arpeggiating tracks at 30 bpm. I recorded the tracks to a tape loop at high speed and lowered the speed to slow on playback to emphasize the tape artefacts. I recently (re)discovered the Red Panda Particle editor that allows you to edit a few additional parameters like spread and pitch randomization which h...
Elektron Octatrack + Kids Intruments // Reversed Loops
Просмотров 477Месяц назад
I threw a few instruments/toys together and created this semi improvised jam to test a new Octatrack live sampling/looper workflow. The idea is that once every loop is in place, you pitch everything down and reverse the play direction to get nice ambient artefacts. Octatrack setup: Track 1 to 6 are setup as flex tracks and are connected to the corresponding recording buffers. Track 7 is a stati...
Elektron Octatrack MKII // Can't stop

This project is based on an Ableton project I created a few years ago. I exported a variety of loops and one-shots and chopped them up on my Octatrack. I sampled the piano and strings using Spitfire Audio plugins(don't remember which one) and I used one of Ableton's stock drumkits. All of the synth parts are sampled from my Moog Subsequent 37.

I sampled a number of melodies and separate notes into my Elektron Octatrack using Native Instruments Noire, U-he Diva and Dot Allison Dulcet Voice by The Crow Hill Company. The samples are cut into slices and either player in order or are randomly triggered by an lfo. I'm using the Chase Bliss Mood mk2 in tape/reverb mode with overdub enabled. Amazing! where do you get your tape loop cassettes? thanks
Thanks! I made this tapeloop myself but it's based on a design by @BatteryOperated. I think they made a tutorial on how to create these loops on their RUclips channel but if you want spare yourself the hassle you can also buy them at their Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/BatteryOperated Thanks for watching.
wow I love this
Thank you 🙏
Nice! 👏
Thanks!
How to extract good sound from a cheap keyboard. Chapter 1. 😄
Step 1, buy $1,000 worth of pedals Jkjk, but sk-1’s are still not cheap and I am on the lookout for one
Really beautiful. Reminds me of Basinski's style. As someone beginning to dabble with tape loops etc, this is hugely inspiring.
@@brianlong9100 I’m not familiar with Basinski but I will definitely check out his work. What album would you recommend? Thanks for watching.
@@django-music >>> Disintegration Loops <<<, Selva Obscura, and A Shadow In Time are some of my favorites
This is lovely, I teared up! (Funny to say this after that, but I'm wondering if a filter to cut out some high end would be good - it sounds kinda harsh through headphones at points)
I hope the tears weren't due to the noise. I tried to cut the noise in post but I eventually decided to keep it, makes it sound a bit more fragile. Not sure if I made the right decision but I can't change it now it's out there. Anyway, thank you for your kind words.
epic
Incredible stuff on so many of your videos! Totally subbed!
Awesome, thank you!
You played that beautifully. It never occurred to me to process the SK-1 through the Big Sky. Looks like I'll have to try it out.
Lofi instruments and reverb pair beautifully, especially with the cloud mode. Thanks for watching!
Inspiring! I've actually buyed just today from a guy a perfect Casio SK-1 for a very cheap price... 🙂
Although limited, it is a joy to use. I hope you enjoy it as well.
For us laymen and new to this world, could you please clarify what latching by pedal would provide? Thanks.
I'll give it a try. It's a two part problem: 1. The hold function on the Osmose doesn't seem to properly work. If I trigger a triad, and then trigger another triad the clock seems to be interrupted, the transition is hitchy. 2. I cannot toggle the hold function with a sustain pedal like I can with for instance the Rev2 or the Subsequent 37. Toggling hold (or latch in the mentioned examples) allows me to keep the arpeggiator clock going when I have to switch chords. It's still quite a challenge to pull this off due to the high tempo but with the Osmose I start out with a handicap with is a pitty since the mpe arpeggiation is really expressive. I hope this answers your question and thanks for watching.
@ thanks! This will likely make more sense to me once I receive mine.
@@sebastienbarre I hope they will fix it with an update but it's still a great instrument without the mentioned feature.
@@django-music and that's on firmware 2.0?
@ I recorded this before the update was geleased.
Sounds great! How did you go about hooking all these up to the SK1?
Thanks! The pedals are chained in series from right to left so the setup is quite simple.
love your videos!
Thanks!
Sounds great.
Thanks Stephen 🙏
Stunning!
Thank you James 🙏
Can someone explain one of the wheels not moving while the other one is? Having had many years of tape cassette mutitrack recorders chew tapes up, I know that is not physically possible without involving tape getting jammed and the playing being stopped.
With a regular tape player (without auto reverse) the tape is moved by the pinch roller, the right reel is used to wind up the tape but does not pull the tape forward. The left reel is not motorized and is only turning because it is unwinding tape. Since this is a tape loop the tape behaves a bit differently. The tape is not routed over the right reel so the turning doesn’t effect the tape and the left reel only turns when there is enough tension which varies a little due to the loop length. I hope this answers your question.
@django-music Thank you django. You explained it perfectly. 👍😎
Thanks for watching
Very nice! ❤🔥
Thanks 🙏
I love the Osmose, but this Arp is not unusable.
I usually create and record these bits in about an hour or two. While in the moment you kind of accept its flaws, only to realize the day after that timing might be a bit too far off. I probably should have practiced this a bit more or should have tried an arrangement that works better with the Osmose arpeggiator. I still hope that Expressive E will add the option to latch the arpeggiator with a sustain pedal but maybe that’s just an excuse for bad playing. It still was a lot of fun to play though. Thanks for watching.
@@django-music Don't get me wrong: I am not criticizing you, but the Osmose. The Arp includes a lot of great ideas, but it is almost not possible to play rhythmically precise. It should have to option to run independently from the keystroke.
@@StephanvonBothmer no worries, I’m just taking the opportunity to criticize my own work 😀
This melody is great! Add to come back to this video.

Awesome little tune, SD-1 was one of my first pedals ever and a majorly underrated one in the boss catalogue in my opinion, wish I still had mine.
It's a lot more affordable than a Tube Screamer and has great tone. Thanks for watching.

Playing the Moog is like trying to negotiate with infinity, at every turn you are met with surprise, childlike glee, and a hunger, akin to a curiosity for the ages. Your playing is reminiscent of what I just wrote. Thank you, Django
I think the playing could be a little tighter but the lovely sound of the Subsequent 37 makes up for it. Thanks for watching!

what a beautiful sound...! can i ask you something btw? i would like to know your signal chain... i bought used tascam 424 mk1 lately and i also wanna try ambient tracks like you... hopefully... thank you...!
The signal chain is pretty simple: - The main output of the 424 is going to stereo strip (9-10) on my mixer (Mackie 1202) - The FX send on the Tascam is going to the Mood with miso enabled, the stereo out also routed to a stereo strip (11-12) on my mixer I mainly use the mixer to set the gain for my dry and wet signal, in some cases I use a little bit of eq. The main out of the Mixer is routed to my interface. I usually do a little bit of tweaking in Ableton and that’s about it. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
This is great! How did you mic the glockenspiel? Is it just piezo?
I'm recording with a Rode NT-1 (condensor mic) that is mounted over the glockenspiel, just out of frame. Thanks for watching!
This is fantastic. I would absolutely pay for an album of your ambient pieces. Do you have a bandcamp or something similar?
Thank you for your kinds words. I don't have bandcamp page or anything similar at this time but I am working on something. I'm still in the early stages of recording, not really sure yet in which directions it's going but I hope to eventually release it on bandcamp.
Sounds so good 😊
Thanks 🙏
This is lovely
Thank you 🙏
Can you say how you assembled the tape exactly? The right hub seems to be running backwards?
It's just a simple short tape loop. The left reel is effected by the tape tension, the right reel in just spinning it's regular direction but doesn't have any effects here because I flipped the tape. Thanks for watching.
Very cool! 🙌
Thanks 🙏
Very nice! And gives me inspiration and motivation: I bought this beautiful little machine a few years ago 2nd hand but I had way too much chaos in my life to manage such a learning curve. Found much more inner peace now (and made a better space in my house for my music stuff) and promised myself to start this winter learning, and above all make music with the Octatrack 🐙 Got an SS37 as well, my all time favorite and a keeper for sure <3 Love jamming with it but sampling could be fun to try as well :)
Thanks! The Octatrack is great once you get used to the workflow. I don't think it's as hard to learn as everyone says but since it can be applied to a variety of workflows, you have to figure out how it complements you setup. At least, that proces took quite some time for me. It pairs very well with you Subsequent 37, seems like a great setup. Nice usename btw, gives me roffa vibes
I can’t wait till my channel is fixed on mine. Have all the tape loops ready to go. 🥹
I'm looking forward to hearing your recordings.

That’s a massive complement. Thanks!
Do you have any songs available for purchase? Love this!
Sorry, not yet. I am working on something but that is far from done. I did consider publishing a collection of my tape jams on Bandcamp but the quality of the recordings is a bit inconsistent. Probably cheaper to just revisit it here one RUclips Anyway, the fact that you are even considering purchasing my work is a massive complement to me. Thanks!
@@django-music oh I would in a second! Look into distrokid. If things aren’t consistent you can release them as singles which is actually the way to go these days. That’s what I think I’ll start doing (instead of albums) myself. Everything will be put on your channel and every major online music streamer and retailer. It’s only $20 a year.
Thanks, I'll check it out.

@@luisaNFKDmSNDEWLJRJ Thanks Luisa 🙏
Really nice, enjoyed the work flow description and the resulting jam. I have been working on a similar approach with my OT lately sampling loops from the syntakt and Digitone then pitching down/reversing etc. really lends a nice quality to the sound. Quick question. What mode do you have the trig keys in? It looked like you were able to hold down 16 and then adjust the parameters across all the tracks? Might be wrong but interested none the less-I’m still very much a OT newbie 3 months in!!
Thanks! It would have been a lot easier if I would have setup a scene with the pitch/reverse but it seemed to work in the moment. The trigs are set to DELAY CTRL mode to control a freeze delay on the master channel, this allows me to use the delay as a beat repeat function. This effects all the audio tracks and the incoming audio (in my case the Reface CP). EZBOT made a very good tutorial on this: ruclips.net/video/XVghai8leTI/видео.htmlsi=nhG5KFnObwG5RW1H The Octatrack and Syntakt seem like a great pair. Keep exploring and thanks for watching.
Curious about this looper setup. Might sharing a temple?
