    That Slug transition was 🤌🤌 Agree across the board. I'd also echo your point about feeling uneasy with auto features... And carry that on over to autofocus too. I can certainly get the shots I want with a Sony or what-not... But I don't like it. I don't enjoy managing a little engine-cranking robot's eyes and expectations. I don't like looking at yet another screen and having it constantly bother me with irrelevant data or visual interpretations. OVF, straight reality good to go. Zone with range backup, I know exactly where my focus falls and the camera isn't going to change my mind at random, beg for confirmation, or just go haywire. I like owning my success and learning from my failures. It's just the perfect camera for that. Anyway. Fun video, fantastic shots. My M240 lives on my shoulder too 🤘

    Have you had any problems with dust or moisture with the M240? I have an M246 and it has failed a few times due to moisture. Never any such problems with the Leica SL.

    • @RentonVlogs

      I've never had any issues with moisture or dust with the M240. The initial failure I had was just do to heavy usage and being extremely hard on the camera. While LA is pretty dry, it can definitely be dusty, and I spend a lot of time in the south now where it's extremely humid and have had no issues with moisture and the camera, yet.

      I'm working on re-doing the Leica M240 video this week, the 75mm will drop next week week. But if you DM me your email on IG (or email me) I can share a 75mm folder with you so you can see the differences for yourself. In short I like the tones, renderings, and size of the 75mm slightly better. However, if you're doing any low-light shooting there is no comparison with the 50mm 1.4 (I primarily shoot in low/available light and get way more use out of the 50mm 1.4). But if you're primarily shooting in well-lit situations or with a flash the 75mm looks a little better (in my opinion).

      Correct, we are halfway there (more than halfway now) and as stated at 1000 subs I'll be doing a camera giveaway. At 850 I'll be starting livestreams, and elaborating more on it (the giveaway will also be done during a livestream), and I'll be launching a website simultaneously, which is already built; The next two videos I have on deck for this channel are on the Leica APO-Summicron-SL 75mm f/2 and the 50mm Noctilux .95 (i'll be posting a few YT shorts on those soon, some of that content is up on TikToK now). Also, it's only a felony if I don't follow through on the giveaway which falls under contest law, and if you looked into my background you would see that I helped build an entire platform around "contests" or "projects" that fall under contest law as well). Here's a link if you want to look more into that: tcrn.ch/3GlKgCR 👈 (FYI I am no longer affiliated/work for that platform as of 2019ish and I do not know if the way they operate today has changed). And I'm not really sure where you see humor in giving away a camera and wanting to hype people up on photography (per the use of the crying/laughing emoji... twice), but to each their own. I hope all is well

Those will be out early 2023, and once I hit 1K subs I'll drop content more regularly (I also had to work a lot and save for the two lenses which is why I've been quite the past two to three months). The camera I'll be giving away won't top that, but that brings up a good point; if a subscriber wins the giveaway and already has a camera then they can pick a lens (or if the lens is insanely expensive) I'll issue them a digital gift-certificate to their preferred shop (assuming it can be done for shops like Adorama or B&H). That way they can put the money towards equipment they can use (this will be done publicly during a livestream)...And to be eligible you just have to be a subscriber See my response to your 2nd comment for more elaboration. 👇

So if you shoot a lot with it and have an IG and you want ppl to check out your work I'll ping you when I'm about to drop my next video and I'll pin your IG to the top of the comments (if you want). I 100% agree, I feel like there will be a very small group of people that use it for video. To me it doesn't make sense to buy this camera specifically for it's video capabilities, if you want it to function like a cinema camera and if your primary focus is video. Any cinema camera (Even dated cinema cameras), Sony Mirrorless, or Canon DSLR/Mirrorless camera are better video options in my opinion and way more cost effective. The video here is good it's just hyper expensive for what it is when compared to the rest of the market. But the photos out of this are fantastic! And the low light capabilities really do shine. I just picked up the APO-Summicron-SL 75mm F/2 last week and paired with this camera it might be my favorite lens/camera combo ever. I need to shoot with it a little more to really know, but stay tuned I'll be dropping a vlog/google drive link with photos for that soon

Timed exposure increased to 30 minutes. I do think Leica cameras in general are overpriced but given the original price of 7500, picking up one for 2K or so is a nice deal. And who cares about video. The SL I used was the first iteration and firmware upgrades had not been released yet. I also ended up buying the SL2s (instead of the original SL shortly after I made this video) which is great, and definitely improves upon the video functionality of the camera... i''m still probably not going to use the video features much, if at all though (but I like that they are there). Also I slightly prefer the image quality of the original SL to that of the SL2s and still think the original is a fair price (used) for the types of images it can produce, but I definitely agree that the initial release price was extremely high. If you're curios i recently put out a video on the SL2s (linked above) with some sample Images in the description as well (A used SL2s is still like 4grand though, so It's a bit pricey and if you're only shooting stills then the SL TYP601 Is a better buy in my opinion)

      Yeah, I did the servicing directly through Leica in New Jersey. I had reached out to DAG first in 2021 and was told that they couldn't help for my particular situation (Which was that the camera stopped recognizing all memory cards, and I needed a CLA). Just a CLA from Leica is probably around 600-700, but I really have no Idea since my bill just had one price for everything listed on it. But a circuit board needed to be replaced on my M240 which is what I'm assuming drove the price up the most.

    Hi Patrick, another great review, though I have to admit that I’m biased as I picked up a used SL a couple of years ago, mint, boxed for £1900 here in England and I love it. However, one of my photo journalist mates has a M10 which is giving me the range finder itch so I would greatly appreciate your views on the M240 from an image quality perspective. I shoot mainly using manual Voigtlanders, my favourite being the 40mm F1.2, sharp wide open and makes the SL very usable in low light. Your thoughts on how I’m likely to find the m240 images would be much appreciated… I’ll be keeping the SL in any case as it’s so versatile and the most joyful, high quality object I’ve ever owned. All the best from England, Marcus

    Thank for your review, very nice pictures! I would still advocate for buying this used, especially if you can test it before. I REALLY doubt, that a CLA-Service is as expensive as you predicted. What was wrong with your M240? Sounds like that they hat to replace a core part of the camera to make it THAT expensive, sorry to hear that it was so costly.

    • @RentonVlogs
      @RentonVlogs 2 года назад

      Cheers, I agree that if you can look at/test a used lens in person you can definitely mitigate the risk, and it may be worth buying used and saving some money. But I wouldn't buy an expensive used lens blind (maybe from B&H or a place with a solid warranty I would consider it but the idea still makes me really uncomfortable). Leica is known for charging a lot to fix cameras/lenses so 20-30% of the original price is pretty common. (but it doesn't mean it will absolutely be that much and if it's under warranty it should be free or close to free). And yes, I did need a fair amount done to the camera that went beyond a basic CLA. I would describe myself as a very heavy user; the camera went with me everywhere, everyday, for five years and then it stopped working. I think part of the reason servicing is so expensive is that there is only one place in the US that does the servicing, so they can definitely keep prices high if they want to. So here is the list of things that needed to be done on my LEICA M240 (total price $1895) 1) adjust/replace printed circuit 2) adjust range finder, check, adjust, clean 3) leather covering (There was nothing wrong with it other than minor signs of wear in one section) 4)Board-set, calibrated. I've heard a standard CLA is typically 750-800 for the M240 (so I was expecting to pay around 1000 not double). But to be fair to Leica it seems like there was a fair amount of work that needed to be done on my camera, especially considering #1

      @@RentonVlogs If it comes to the electronic parts, the money is running no matte what make you high-end gear is. Maybe I've been lucky, but I've never had any repairs on my M240 and M-P240 done. The Leica lenses are premium both in quality and price, but the quality will remain long after the price is forgotten. I've tried both Zeiss and Voigtländer lenses, but they can't beat Leica in performance.

    You do get autofocus with some adapters if adapting canon or nikon lenses.

    • @RentonVlogs
      @RentonVlogs 2 года назад

      Sorry, deleted my first response because I was thinking of the wrong camera. I thought your comment was for the Leica M240 that I did a video for (My mistake): Definitely, as time goes on I'm sure adapters have been made for this camera that allow autofocus with other non-Leica lenses. How well will that Auto-Focus function though, is another question. AF has never been a Leica strong point, even with the new SL2s it's still comparably (Nikon/canon/Sony) sub-par, so I'd imagine that the SL Typ601 with an adapter and Nikon/Canon lens works well enough, but isn't extremely reliable. But if you're chasing a certain aesthetic you could probably get some great visuals with the different lens combinations.

    I just got the ClearClick 2.0 recorder. I’m using it to record old VHS tapes to digital. I’m having an issue though. When I try to record a tape that’s more than 2 hours in length it creates a second file and continues recording. How do I get it to record just 1 file?? Or will I just have to edit the 2 files so they are 1 in a vídeo editor program??

    • @RentonVlogs
      @RentonVlogs 2 года назад

      From my understanding there is a 2hour cut-off on the Clearclick 2.0 to avoid audio sync issues. So yeah, I think your'e exactly right and that your best bet will be to string them together in a program.

      Thank you! At the time I traded it I knew I wanted to vlog and shoot music videos. I also wasn't using the lens much since my M240 needed to be serviced. I didn't have a video camera/lens or the money to purchase them, So I traded the lens for a Canon C500 mark1 (Pl mount) and some money towards a PL mount lens which allowed me to start this vlog. And this week I actually just purchased a new camera (Leica SL2s) so I'll be doing a video on the C500 Mark1 before selling it (Just for fun, it's a little outdated but outputs a great image)

    I shoot the sl2s and let me tell you why I recently purchased a new SL 601, the sensor in this camera and color it renders is unmatched. The camera has wireless features and features in general that are still relevant to this day. If you want to shoot M glass, this is a perfect body for those who dont want the rangefinder. Ill never sell the SL, its just too good of a camera and one of Leicas best ever made. It also renders sharper images than the new sl2s, I have both and I see the difference. The sl2s has better iso performance, but you really cant beat the sl if you want to get into the leica platform..

    Mini-DV is a digital format. So reducing the output to analog makes absolutely no sense. Simply connect your camera to a Firewire port on your computer. If you don't have a Firewire port on your computer, then you can buy a $10.00 card and install it into your PC. Then there are inexpensive sortware apps that allow recording your native mini-DV TAPES directly to your hard drive. So you get an exact digital copy of your digital tapes.

    • @RentonVlogs
      @RentonVlogs 3 года назад

      Yeah, you could do that, but this video is specifically about the simplicity of using THIS device/an "unboxing" video as stated in the title to not mislead people. Apple also phased out firewire ports (yes there are adapters) on their computers in 2012 which created a need for a device like this (Especially since MiniDV/High8 is outdated tech and has been for quite sometime). Even if there is a slight loss in quality transferring the footage to the SD card/through an analog output, its still a great device that's extremely easy to use that many people will get. That being said, it's not for everybody.

    • @myronachtman4304
      @myronachtman4304 3 года назад

      @@RentonVlogs You can configure a Firewire to Thunderbolt cable for the Mac (as perfectly demonstrated in another RUclips video) and then make direct DIGITAL copies of your mini-DV tapes. The quality would be way better than using the ClearClick device.

    • @RentonVlogs
      @RentonVlogs 3 года назад

      @@myronachtman4304 Right, as I mentioned in my previous comment there are adapters (I can't speak for everyone, but I would need two of them, and then the firewire cable). I prefer this device to that option and having wires everywhere running out of my computer (I would also really like if Apple included more ports on their computers but we all know that's not going to happen anymore). So comparing my previously captured footage using firewire800 cable to this device and what was captured, the quality difference is negligible. So unless you're working on a documentary or something and you're being paid, the simplicity of using this is the better option for me, but again it's not for everybody. 🤙 I hope all is well, cheers

    I bought a new 601 SL as the new SL2 rolled out. After seeing the images from the new sensors I concluded the 601 sensor produces the most pleasing images from any FF camera regardless of brand through today 2021. I’m so glad I bought it, plus the four pad controls and built in GPS. It simply has a spectacular look that has not been eclipsed since 2015.

    • @jeticg
      @jeticg 3 года назад

      Yeah, I was really surprised by how intuitive the 4 pad controls are, especially against the new 3 button layout. Have the two (and just these two no more) within the reach of my right thumb makes it possible for me to adjust ISO and AF mode precisely without moving my eye away from the viewfinder nor accidentally pressing the wrong button, and when I look at the LCD the two on the left can also be used to do something that I less often need like switching between profiles etc. I don't like having a thousand buttons on my camera, nor have too many crammed together like Panacanikony. The original SL design is perfect for me.
