I seen jeff 2x wkth bernard purdie & simon phillips .both top shelf
WIred, Blow by Blow, and There and Back are superlative. The drumming on those three albums is outstanding. Never really got into any of his other stuff.
Incredible playing brother - I love this take on JB and the drummers JB used throughout the years … so well done. I am a huge fan of Jeff Beck and being a drummer, all the drummers he showcased. I can’t believe I found this.. made my day.. thank you sir
very interesting video, very good playing
As a former professional rock and roller, I want to acknowledge Guy Gelso is an outstanding percussionist.
Robertson
Guy .....have you always played open handed???
Just the last couple of years…a work in progress!!!
I have been trying it as well. To a degree, it's like beginning again. I will keep at it! I will never understand why this method isn't taught when one starts playing. It's much easier to use the left as a lead on the hats and the right as a lead on the ride.@@GuyGelso
The key is to get that 8th note pulse on the HH, accent harder on the down beats. Do something crossed over first then open handed, mirror image in reverse. I’ll do a video on it soon.
@@GuyGelso That would be great! Thanks!
Wait wait wait, I get what this video is about but the live drummer in this is over playing. He's putting parts in that aren't in the original recordings. Was this deliberate? That's fine but I thought it was to mimic the actual live recording?
I could not, nor would ever want to copy someone’s parts verbatim., and I say that in the intro that I would not copy note note, but play these parts with some sort of authenticity to the originals in my own way. A song is a song and each drummers hears the parts differently…unless you’re playing Neil Peart, then you HAVE to play exact which I am incapable of doing.
@@GuyGelso Good point and no doubt you're playing is solid. I just wondered is all. For cover tunes I usually try to play as closely to the original as possible but that's just me. I still totally enjoyed the video
If I’m not mistaken, Richard Bailey was only 18 years old when Blow by Blow was recorded. Amazing drummer.
An incredible feat for someone who was only 18 years old.
Terry Bozzio is fantastic! Very individual.
@GuyGelso I would Waller was a blend of Mitchell and Baker. Waller had also played with Brian Auger. Waller was an established drummer when he joined Beck. Actually, during the late 1960s and early 1970s the number of fantastic drummers England produced was amazing! Aynsley Dunbar also played with Beck. If you like Mitchell, please check out, Jon Hiseman, Brian Davison of the Nice, Clive Thacker, and of course, Clive Bunker. Little known fact about Tony Newman; he was a member of Sounds, Inc. who provided the saxophones on the Beatles Good Morning, Good Morning! Sounds were very unique and might be considered one of the first groups to match classical and rock, but they were absolute loons! Three saxophones, guitar, bass and drums-a lot of fun to watch!
Your awesome GREAT VIDEO! There wasn't a 10 year gap in Album's after "There And Back" he did "Flash" in 1985 with Rod Stewart on "People Get Ready"
You know you’re right, I forgot that one.
Jeff Beck's drummer and no word about Carmaine Appice? Good night!
Carmine was not on any of Becks solo albums, and I was only featuring solo work. Talked to Carmine about this last week. He’s a friend and I want to do a full video on just him.
@@GuyGelso ok, if Beck, Bogart andAppice is not a Solo Projekt for you I unterstand. How you call it?
For me it's Narada Michael Walden on "Wired" and Simon Phillips on "There and Back". I have been listening to Max Middleton's solo records and just yesterday I was enjoying the beautiful afternoon right in front of the ocean in St. Pete Beach listening to Wired on my FLIP 6. "Led Boots" is as nasty as it gets. The only version i've ever owned of that recording was on 8-Track when it came out.
Thanks so much!! Love this great band!! Always be one of my very favorite.
Awesome video! Thank You
Great video brother. I would have enjoyed knowing Cozy. He seemed like a cool cat to hang out with. I saw the Blow tour. Now I know it was Purde on drums It was a double bill with Mahavishnu so Purde was a good match.
Bailey was the best if you ask me. TASTEFUL
All the drummers mentioned are tremendous, but I have a special love for Mickey Waller as I thought he had a special blend of power and taste uniquely combined in a way that really appealed to me.
Micky Waller was probably my favorite during Becks rock period, reminded me of Mitch Mitchell
@@GuyGelsoGood observation, Guy. Waller struck me as a blend of Mitchell and Baker; but I could always identify Waller as a drummer, especially on cymbals. His cymbal sound was gorgeous.
His drumming on A Salty Dog....such a haunting, slow, elegant, orchestral piece...sold me on him. I imagine being a drummer and being tasked to come up with a suitable drum part for it and I'd be pretty stumped. The only knock I've ever heard against him was from another drummer - who said BJ's incessant use of cowbells on Whiskey Train made it unlistenable to his ears.
😎👍💗🥁💣🔊🎼 Zebra V!
Thanks for the great videos Guy! You ever thought of doing one on Michael Shrieve during his Santana days?
Yes I have…couple others coming first.
Hey man! David Abbruzzese here... Thank you for this take on Becks remarkable legacy of drummers! Great playing too!
Unbelievable to see your comment here. So many hours transported by your playing. You wouldn't have been out of place on There and Back! Thanks for the memories.
He kept it simple or Satch would beat him. Jk Jk but Satriani really should of let other instruments shine more.
So good, man. My favorite JB performance remains Live at Ronnie Scott's with Vinnie, Tal, etc, but I love them all. Great tribute to some of his drummers!
Guy you are the man. Thanks for your awesome playing. Zebra forever.
I can play some stuff open handed but my other side is still better especially with jazz
My open hand playing is still a work in progress. My good friend Dom Famularo pushed me to go open and it’s only been a couple years,, getting there though.
@@GuyGelso yah it’s hard I can play some stuff but I have to think about it opens up a lot of things for kit setup it might depend on what I was playing I guess.
Nice do prefer open handed
Thank you, Guy. Jeff is simply the best. You do a kick ass job on this video.
Thanks my friend!!!
Great summary.
Thank you!!
Let me tell you that i love you, Gelso.
He'll yeah!
You da guy, Guy!!😎👍
thanx for these fine examples of art and your outtakes. wish u well.....greetings from Germany🖐
Nice video I will subscribe
Thank you for this. One of the reasons I am a good drummer is because I am a fan of Jeff Beck and he has always had a good drummer. I would crank my stereo and try to keep up. I've also seen many of the above live with Jeff.
You’re a good drummer… So we all know you, right ? Who are you, then ?
It would be great to hear about Jeff's bass players.
Oh yes would be great but I’m just a simple drummer my friend!!! I know not about bass players!!!
MORE
Amazing Video, you worked hard and it shows it, great drumming!!! Thanks for, creating, and sharing this informative post!
Fantastic video ! Jeff Beck was a guitar genius of any style of music.
You know what Dom would say about the open handed playing!!!
Yes…and he forced me into it!!! I miss him.
Great work man.
Appreciate it!
Hey Guy, I've never heard zebra play Jeff Beck but I'm sure Randy can handle it I always hope to see you guys play scatterbrained or something from blow by blow I knew you were probably digging Jeff
I wish we would play Beck but our show is just Zebra music with the occasional Zeppelin song…thanks for watching my friend.
A good guy
Thank You for this amazing video!
Excellent video. All the drummers you picked are out of this world actually every drummer he had was pretty much out of this world. Jeff Beck was definitely one of the Greatest !!!!! 🎸🎵🥁 Ps. Great job on your drumming. Excellent representation. Enjoy your week… 😎
Freaking I love zebra and your drumming is excellent guy .I saw the band twice in the 80s some of the songs you slowed the tempo drastically. I have to ask why did you do that? I'm not one to tell anyone what to do. All I know is that if I went to see my favorite band and they slow down the tempo so drastically on some of their songs. Imagine going to see led Zeppelin and Bonham slows down communication breakdown drastically or any of their incredible songs imagine going to see the who when Keith Moon was alive and he slows down the bargain drastically. zebra songs are so incredible they deserve to be played at the most effective tempo. I do hope that you have reconsidered why you did those things. But ultimately you're the drummer
Sorry my friend…We feel that the tempos of many songs needed to be slowed down from past albums as they feel better to us when we listen to live recordings, especially from our 1st album where everything is very fast.
I love your band zebra I saw you guys twice back in the 80s but when you play some of the songs at slower tempos it was heartbreaking to me I hope that now you no longer do that and you stick to the tempo that your fans are used to. I don't mean any disrespect. But imagine going to see your favorite band and they slow the tempo of your favorite songs. I hope you can relate your tremendous drummer and what a band zebra is
You skipped right over Beck, Bogert & Appice !!!!!
No…sorry. This video was only about Jeff Beck Group or Jeff Beck solo albums, not other groups Beck was a part of. I just spent an hour talking to Carmine tonight and we laughed about everybody saying this about BBA. I’ll be doing a full video just on Carmine’s career soon.
Ok good explanation @@GuyGelso
Wow, I always played it like the Immigrant song ,with the cowbell the same as the bass drum. Probably a harder way of doing it. Thanks.
Just change sticking to RLRR LRRL
