      There are some bolt kits online - the one I just saw briefly showed some studs I think intended for that spot - so a stud with nuts holding the cover on and then a washer, then the alternator bracket then another nut should work pretty well.

    I used JB Weld on my Ninja gas tank. Worked on it for about 8 hours over 8 days. Applied it many times and sanded it down with 80, 120, 220, 320, and 400. When I was done, it was super smooth, and the tank was super shinny. I just turned it in today to the professional powder coating company. He said he would heat it up, then apply the powder and put it in the over at 400 for 10 minutes according to Prisma powders. The transition between the metal and the J-B Weld was very smooth. You could not feel any ridge. We will see how it turns out.

    • @steve80TBG
      @steve80TBG 2 месяца назад

      Thanks for the details here. Am curious how it comes out. They are basically hot flocking it if they are heating it before. I would guess they are doing this in case the jb weld down not transfer the charge enough, the powder will stick as it touches it and melts. Have only tried this once, hopefully you get good results with yours.

      The springs turned out great. Feels like the right tension. The clutch return spring is Omix and I added a link to it in the description - its pretty beefy so hopefully that gets you the details you need. For the brake return, I bought that at Ace. They had tons to choose from. I picked one that matched the length of the original and as you can see from the video, its not as stiff as the clutch spring, but its got some pull to it - its not as thin as a throttle return spring if that helps.

    When you tried to rotate it, the shaft had no bearings, thus it was scraping against the magnets. Once the end caps bushings are in place, it rotates as it should. Good idea to bench test a starter before doing the re-install. With AMC/Ford/Autolite starters, it is a matter of grounding the case (usually a bolt flange on the aluminum end cap) and applying 12V to the battery cable stud. I have an issue with an AMC/Jeep starter I bought. Will not run - only arcs at the lug when you touch the jumper cable to it. However, when I took the sheet metal bendix cover off and pressed the bendix arm to open those two large contacts, it spins up fine(?) Anyone know if this indicates a direct short somewhere?

      Yes, Omix makes one that looks reasonably close to original. A lot really like SpeedHut but they are expensive - and dont look original - depending on what your objectives are. I wanted to stick to original and actually just last night think I found a short in my signal wire which may be causing some of the issues - need to replace and see.

      There is an ato clip that plugs into the fuse box I believe for ignition power. If you have a newer radio with a memory, you'll need to find an available always on 12v. I used a fuse piggy back on another fuse that's always on. Then a ground you could get from any body bolt behind the dash.

    im not sure how exactly you had it wired for your bench test, but i THINK it is energized through the vehicle'e run circuit. i believe it needs a voltage in and then out. but dont quote me. in the FSJs, the Amp meter is inline with the power feed. i think the CJs use a seperately fed volt meter that doesnt require power going through it for the entire vehicle's power to work. Im kinda jealous. i would suggest getting a reprint of the 1981 Jeep Technical Service Manual for the knowledge. also the alternators as far as i know are the "10si". there was also a "12si" model which is heavier duty/higher amperage output than the 10si. my ex Alternator Guy rebuilt several of mine over the last decade or so with higher output components in the stock 10si and 12si housings. he's my ex Alternator Guy because the last AMC/Ford starter he rebuilt only extends the drive half the time, he scrapped and recycled about 6 of my old AMC/Ford starters i brought him in a box to make a couple good ones out of...and i got nothing back but disassemblednstsrter, and few extra broken srarter snouts. that, and he gave me someone else's 10si...the mounting points were clocked 90° off, so the regulator plug position was unreachable (i fixed that)...and the plastic fan (which wasnt mine) rubbed on the upper mount bolt. it clearanced itself. this was the 4th or 5th alt rebuild he did for me, and the last. so im in the same boat as you now...a noob DIY alt rebuilder. good first try. im gonna be right behind you.

      Glad you are getting a chance to do it right. I didn't know exactly what to expect and just glad it seems to be working ok. One day I'll try to figure out why the bench test failed. I rebuilt my starter next and now going to refinish at least the outside of the power steering pump.
