    I agree quality over quantity. I loved bricklaying worked for a local builder and we’d always wouldn’t lay a huge number but our work was always quality and neat. I then went with a price gang on site and was getting a good number down but because everything was so rushed felt as if the quality was going down. I ended up falling out of love for the trade because I wasn’t taking as much pride in my work because everyone was pushing for numbers. I wanted to find good mentors and unfortunately never had someone that was able to take some time and show me how to improve the quality and have a good speed. Instead young guys are shouted at for taking too long because we want to do a good job and then are replaced with people who can throw them down without care. There’s so much toxicity when someone is learning so people go to different industries. I recently went into other work but I do miss it because I put everything into it. I hope learners in the future get taken care of how they should without the negativity and constantly being thrown aside.

Also is it true that carrying the hod up ladders with bricks in is now outlawed. It was a great video , I can see your hod carrier is a good one , a hard worker and a great guy.

    love the bricklayer mentality. It's a true reminder of the power of patience, precision, and perseverance. The focus of laying one brick at a time, working methodically through a plan and embodying patient endurance, your achieving remarkable things. You're not just building a wall, your building purpose, and character.

    I have to agree with everything this guy says . There are too many jumped up labourers who do a 1 week bricklaying course get a mickey mouse NVQ and think they can earn some good money , I worked with one of these so called bricklayers who was mid 50s I could see he was no good so I said "how long have you been laying bricks ?" He said "about 5 years" so I said "what made you get into bricklaying ? He said "I had a look around and thought there's some money to be made at this bricklaying game so I bought myself some tools" . Have to say the brickwork in this video is neat and tidy and that 1000 bricks a day is a myth , great video !

    We use the same method of calculating but instead of pricing for each individual elements such as bricks, blocks , insulation etc you just price the sqm for everything, it takes all the hassle out of it. A price for 2 skins of block A price for brick & block A price for timber frame The price may differ depending on the insulation method / overhand working etc

    It's true only because of conditions and what you mean by "brick". Where I come from we lay brick, and block. There are all kinds of different size, weights, types, type of installation, and building conditions, as well as skill levels. You can't just say "it can't be done" and that would be a true statement. If your laying standard 4X8"X2-1/4", on a shopping mall or a trailer skirt wall, a fast mason can do it by lunch time without breaking a sweat, every day. In my prime I could do that with 8" block under same conditions with rendered walls. But when you talking about houses, corbels, rakes, soldiers, and etc... or heavy weight, double jointed, 12" splitface, you're not going to do that on any day. Specify your conditions. A statement like yours is what I always used to hear I made by those who I embarrassed on the wall, but never from someone who gave me a run for my money.

    • @originaldanman
      @originaldanman 3 месяца назад

      Right, I'm primarily a block main who lays brick on occasion. We don't have clay where I live so it's primarily 8" rough concrete block. On a warehouse I can still lay a thousand in a day at 62, if it's not to hot, but in my prime no more than 8 or 900 on a house if it wasn't to cut up. But regularly about 5 to 700, brushed walls, of whichheight only had to be close because of poured tiebeam. Today, if you get 300 out of a guy, he thinks they laid a lot of block. When I started, if you couldn't last 500 a day you weren't even a mason.

    Im a construction project manager. Been in the game 42 years and a manager for 26 years doing projects up to £30m. It is very simple. Do what you say you are going to do. Don't cry every time there is an issue. Get stuck in and more importantly provide quality work. Too many times Ive had brickies onsite, that if they dont have a brick or block in one hand and a trowel in the other, they bleat that someone owes them money, when they haven't loaded out, haven't cleaned up and haven't snagged and rectified their own shit work. By far the worst trade on site to deal with, but an absolute pleasure when the right people, quality people turn up. Too many bricky companies, take on work, then send gangs , who they only spoke to the night before on the phone onsite under their name, with no idea whether these guys are any good, or what their characters are like, and these people ruin your reputation . Keep your teams small, keep them tight, drive on quality rather than quantity and I, and many main contractors and developers will keep you working all year round, as goid reliable quality brickies are like rocking horse shit, and when we find them, we keep them. Take that as it's presented or don't , but I can assure you, it is fact.
