Pittsburgh's New Bouldering Park is Insane (& totally FREE!)
Hello everyone and welcome back to court climbs! Oh man. Oh man oh man oh man. I've been waiting for Boyce Park Bouldering to open for awhile now & I'm so stoked that it is. It's the perfect place to get outside while still being able to grip plastic holds. And even better, it's the place to go when no matter how hard you try, it seems like your friend always has a membership at a different gym than you do. Boom, problem solved. HUGE thank you to everyone that helped develop this park, I know in the video I said it was the folks at Iron City Boulders, but it was so many more people than that & I appreciate you all very much!

Who won the silly hat comp?
Super nice park, really good setting. I thought the rubber was pretty friendly, instilled enough confidence to climb some of the harder stuff and put some decent effort in. My only real criticism is that I went on a Sunday mid day and there were a lot of younger kids that don't know climbing etiquette, nor did their parents, and there were no gym staff to help direct them to not climb problems that crossed into other problems, or run under you when you were climbing. Overall, really great facility, makes me jealous that I don't have one near me
Ok wait 1. You were in town?! 2. I totally hear you on the etiquette thing, I think that’s the sacrifice you make for a free facility with only signage to guide, but I also think that it’s such a cool opportunity to help be the change that we want to see here & gently educate folks about using the space together. Not saying it’s easy, just that we are all a part of helping to foster the climbing culture at these types of places. But it is hard & takes time & everyone has to be receptive (which isn’t always the case!)
@courtclimbs ya, I was in town. Twice actually. Once two weeks ago Friday, then again on Sunday. Planned to hit up a gym on the Friday, but we got in too late. Heard about the park while away (NRG and South Carolina) and decided to stop again on the way back! Oh, and agree about the teachable moment stuff, but in the situation I just practiced patience and let them do their thing. I was just a visitor and they were all having fun. I think if they ever did anything really dangerous or concerning I'd probably say something.
Also! I freakin' love the walkie-talkie - lol best prop ever! Great video :D
@@SendEdition thanks! 💛
I was soooo stoked when I saw the new story on this park - I'm glad it's just as fun as it looks :D
Mom new court climbs video is out I can’t talk right now
@@baldboydesign3819 Hi Zack’s mom 👋
That is so cool & great vid. Would say it’s a modernized Husky Climbing Rock in Seattle (first made mode left rock wall ins USA (1978). Shredded rubberized material reminds me of Vital Climbing Brooklyn roof top.
Cool.
I was skeptical about an outdoor bouldering gym but once I saw people climbing on it as well as the amount of problems that are actually out there it actually looks really sick. also love the drone and b roll footage good video as well.
@@__AbAbe I felt similarly before I actually knew what it was like, which is a big reason I made this video, so glad that it got you stoked :)
Just to clarify one thing: one of those topout boulders is more adult oriented. The one with the big prow is set with adult sizes and difficulty in mind, so you can practice your outdoor topouts! The others are mainly for kids, with one being for toddlers. Also, the traverses are for anyone, one is actually set to be somewhat ADA accessible. You can get a wheelchair right to the start holds.
@@jonathang.1502 Oh wow, thank you for the additional info!

Court, sincere thanks for being our travel guide. I watched this with my 10 year old daughter before our trip and it helped her get excited. Your videos exemplify everything I love about climbers and climbing. Thanks!
@@joshuawestlund Aw, so happy you had a good trip! 💛 Thanks for your comment!
The problem with these shoes is that they're a total nightmare to resole, especially in Denmark, the stores and clubs here only resole Scarpa and La Sportiva, shame, I would have liked to have bought them
@@mikekenny1698 fair, I know a specific resolver in the states that does it but I agree it is much less accessible to the general climbing community in terms of resoles
This was so much fun to watch! That "commit" bit you guys did was hilarious! Hahaha! Also, I remember the first time I tried kilter. It was set at 40 or 45 degrees in one of the gyms here and the warm up problem was definitely not a warm up 😂
@@Espressomo Haha the commit part had me dying in the edit 😂 45 degrees is no joke I’m telling you

Thank you very much
Wooooohoooo. Thank you so much for sharing this. I have always wanted to do this. I never thought there would be this many outdoor areas to climb. I just assumed it was indoor and places that experienced climbers would climb. You have launched me down a rabbit hole and I am grateful. Thanks again. I will tell you how it goes.
@@junepetr3481 aw yay!!! I’m so happy and excited for you!
@@courtclimbs would you recommend a few trips to an indoor climbing gym? I will if need be, but the outdoors is what is half the draw to me. Can I get with a group that may show me the basics outside at first?
I’d recommend going to a gym first if you want to get into ropes. Bouldering I would say starting outside is a lot lower barrier to entry knowledge wise. You might find this video helpful ruclips.net/video/M7Pi5QkCI4M/видео.htmlsi=QXHzxHvoKoAUlooe

Now that you’re a board climber, it might be time to rename the channel to Court Crushes. I find that Kilter grades are wildly inconsistent since people tend to stick with the setter’s original grade. I tend to agree that 30-45 degrees has the “softest” climbs, but there are very few true V1s past 40. I love setting on Kilter for my friends. You should do an episode trying viewer sets!
@@nimzodragonlord Haha aw this comment is so lovely. 💛 I’m trying to get back into some outdoor content, but when it gets cold & gross maybe I will do a viewer set episode, thanks for the idea!

Hey! Haven't seen you at the gym much lately, but great video! I didn't know about Boyce, looking forward to hearing more.
It’s been a busy summer but I’m trying to get there when I can! Hopefully see you around soon!
I somehow never made it to Frank Curto or Seldom Seen in my time there! Can confirm though that the Schenley bridge pillar is sandbagged a few grades haha. I also found a fun little bridge pillar with some good bouldering on one of my runs on Duck Hollow Trail at the B&O Glenwood Railroad Bridge. Wanted to go back there at some point with gear to check out the top and see how hard it would be to top rope and potentially do some spicy highball boulders once I knew the moves.
Also Eclipse is an absolute classic for the grade! Breakneck is a wonderful little crag, I wish DC had something that good.
