    ok but what do you do if you have an older service panel that set up for 220 3 wire and your generator, lets say has a twist lock 4 prong on it but your breaker panel only is older 3 prong panel? you saying only thing you can do is rerun all new 4 wire for the 220 plugs? example if you was making an extension cord for you 220 plug on you gen that has 4 wires but on the other side that plugs into the older three prong inside what would you do with the forth wire? no place to connect it on you 3 wire plug?

    Great video @ToolLook but I have a question. I'm changing my 3-prong dryer plug to 4- prong and can't afford to run 3/1 Romex( 2/1 is the current wiring, so no ground) I would like to know if I can run a separate ground wire from the dryer plug to an 8 ft grounding rod and connect this to the rod that is connected to the circuit box. Would this be acceptable for the code?

    • @toollookchannel
      @toollookchannel 19 дней назад

      Thanks, it’s a great question by the way. Here’s why you shouldn’t. Your (2/1) 10-2 Romex has a bare wire that was likely used for neutral. Running a separate ground now looks like you’re running 2 ground wires. An unsleeved wire used as a neutral was never intended for branched circuits, but somehow this slipped through in different locations for dryers and ranges. Bottom line is…your 10-2 was not used as intended. It was never intended for 240v dryers and adding more to the mess wouldn’t make it correct. Only a 4 wire cable would be correct for a 4 prong set up. To clear it up even more. There’s plenty of talk about running a separate ground wire, but the topics are really for receptacles that have a proper sleeved neutral wire in the branch circuit. Your current wire set up doesn’t, it’s likely borrowing the white wire as a hot and using the bare as a neutral.

    So back in the day before plastic, metal was the only option so the boxes are grounded. That means there is a ground wire there. Back in the day, there was no 4 prong receptacles to hook a ground to but the ground is there most likely there for the metal box. I will open it up and see. I want to get a commercial grade receptacle to charge my ev but they don’t make them in 10-30. I must go 14-30 to get a commercial grade receptacle and it’s good news that I probably won’t need to run a ground wire to the panel.

    Life experience has taught me that if these boxes are used in a place of high use "kitchen counter" they will work themselves loose over time by the paddles digging into the drywall and the constant pushing and pulling. What works for me is mounting the box precisely next to the edge of the stud. Prior to installing the box angle drill two pilot holes on the stud side of the box near the upper and lower edges, far enough back that the eventual screws will be well clear of the outlet terminal screws. Install the box as normal, but then use two drywall screws thru your pilot holes of the box into the stud. The box is now securely in place. If your a little on the anal side you can dab the drywall screw end once installed with some silicone and wrap the outlet set screws with electrical tape. Done properly those drywall screws are nowhere near the set screws of the receptacle.

    • @toollookchannel
      @toollookchannel Месяц назад

      The plastic boxes with the wings are not listed to have fasteners pierced through the sidewalls. It’ll better executed with the proper listed box, such as a hybrid (aka smart box), or use a metal box as those screws will work safely when the box has a grounding conductor fastened to the steel. I wouldn’t trust a drywall screw to hang a picture; they’re listed for drywall, and they’ll stick out in this application.

    • @toollookchannel

      The short answer is that the “bare” should’ve been a white wire. This method that you have works, but it is done incorrectly. The “bare” wire in this case should not have been used as current carrying conductor (neutral).

    It's sometimes lost in the translation that these old 10-30 plugs were designed for buildings that had no ground wire. They used the neutral to perform double duty, to give a neutral leg for circuits that required only 120 V inside the appliance and they used that leg for grounding the chassis frame. The problem with that was the way the cabinet of the appliance could become charged with voltage applied to the neutral wire, even from another appliance sharing that same neutral. When modern homes began including a ground wire, the intent was to make these obsolete so there would be no chance a neutral bond at the old appliance. Along came the 6-30 receptacles, which used two hots and a ground (no neutral). This worked great for welders and other devices that didn't require that half voltage neutral leg, it avoided any chance of inadvertent bonding of the neutral wire, and it provided a legitimate equipment ground that never had normal voltage or current applied. To prevent the two styles from being inadvertently mixed, they made the plug designs incompatible with each other.

      The same deal with the nema 6-15r and 6-20r for 240v air conditioners. They ran on knobs at first and now they have digital displays sooo…they must be borrowing from the ground wire for neutral purposes on these air conditioners. It explains why they all use plastic faces.

    • @toollookchannel

      Yes of course, right away. It looks like someone is proposing that we abandon the methods of grounding our primitive light switches…to perhaps convert to the much newer and sophisticated foreign norms, so that we can keep up with the times of our superiors in lighting technologies and rid ourselves of the peasantry.

    • @toollookchannel
      @toollookchannel 7 месяцев назад

      Sometimes the jumper wire is green instead of white. The process doesn’t change for the 4 prong installation; that “green jumper” would still go in the center of the terminal block with the “white neutral wire” of the 4 prong power cord. For 3 prong power cords, DO NOT remove the “green jumper” or “white jumper” from the dryer’s metal frame.

    I meant to ask you earlier, WHERE did you get this huge selection of boxes? Did you get all of them at a REAL electrical supplier in a big city? Out here in central PA the real suppliers have surrendered to the big box stores, who carry only a narrow selection, and usually half of it is out of stock at any given time. I remember when I was about ten years old, how much I enjoyed looking through my grandfather's catalog of plumbing fittings ... wow, what a selection! Your video was almost that much fun. Thanks again for your excellent work putting it together!
