    Blame the manufacturers and their ridiculous demands for dealers; huge investment in glass palaces, into the £s millions, well beyond the abilities of passionate about bikes owner-drivers, resulting in most new dealerships being opened by car dealer groups run by bean counters that frankly couldn't care less about bikes. The minute the figures don't stack up, which is quickly given the huge investment required, and they pull the plug. They don't care about what their customers might do after they have closed, in many cases they hardly cared when they were open to be honest. Where are all the PCP customers going to return their bikes at the end of contract? I wouldn't ride a hour and a half plus to return a bike. In addition to all the usual, and ridiculously overpriced, "corporate identity" facades, signage, floor tiles, furniture, special workshop equipment and tools etc. dealers HAVE to order lots of clothing and accessories, the majority of which, adding insult to injury, is sold at a loss at the end of every riding season. Dealers are not left to run their own business, manufacturer representatives dictate pretty much everything within a dealership, from desks to coffee machines, accessory and finance sales targets, as well as which bikes are displayed and available as demos. It's a one-size-fits-all "this is what you have to do to get your backhander (sorry, bonus) at the end of each quarter". Long standing dealers, with great reputations and customer service ratings, and often no or little debt, are often forced against their, and any financially aware person's logic, to move "where the chimney pots are" usually taking on huge debt to build some new glass palace, despite there being no evidence whatever that this will help sell more bikes, it just adds £00,000s or more to the dealer's overheads. Not surprisingly, failure is common, often wiping out the owner financially quite quickly, after many years of trading successfully previously! Ironically this means, as is demonstrated by the recent BMW/Triumph/Ducati dealership closures, customers and potential customers have to travel even further afield! There aren't usually enough of the popular models to go around, (the same applies to cars) so dealers have to sign up to take, for example 4 x F900Rs to get an extra 1300GS or two, the model mix is dictated by the manufacturer and not by customer demand, resulting in a fire sale of less popular models to get them off the showroom floor before they need to be paid for by the dealer. The low volume of bike sales in the UK means that huge glass palaces are not viable, there isn't the sales volume or dealer margin to generate the revenue required to keep businesses viable. It's about time bike manufacturers scaled their dealer operations to suit a business model that has a chance of working! in such a small, low margin market. The focus on brand image should never be more important than a viable business model, or else there is no business, with a deleterious effect on the brand image they try hard to project. Customers want to deal with people that are as passionate about bikes as they are, provide good customer service, and to be there when needed. Being passionate costs nothing, good customer service is inexpensive in the short term, and pays for itself in the longer term (of course manufacturers and PLC dealer groups only look at quarterly figures!!) by far the biggest investment, and millstone around a dealership's neck is needlessly expensive premises, something that has the least effect on customer satisfaction. Add in dealer "performance targets" for finance and accessories and manufacturers are prioritising their own needs over honesty with their customers and dealership viability.

    Yip totally agree I live in Swansea and used M&P BMW Motoradd to get my F850 GSA but went back to upgrade to R1250GSA only to be told closing down. Real shame so had to go to Dick Lovetts as that is the closest deal to me which is till 105 mile each way trip, I got a real good deal on my Brand new R1250GSA instead of going for R1300GSA. Great service I will look at north Oxford when it comes to a upgrade. The real shame is BMW could have told owners these dealerships are closing and look after its customers, but this shows how bad the current biking scene is at the moment with so many closing down. I doubt the BMW system makes the Honda system feel like "a piece of crap". A dual clutch while a bit heavier and complex is programmable and can shift faster and smoother. With the odd gears 1,3,5 on one shaft and even gears 2,4,6 on another shaft that are already engaged swapping clutches while not having to physically move the gear with a shift fork etc as in the conventional BMW gears can be technically superior. However I think both systems are a breath of fresh air and will put manual boxes into the bin of history. DCT was the pioneer. Thank you Honda. Crap? Nope.

    • @lifeisarideuk
      @lifeisarideuk 11 дней назад

      @@sunrisejak2709 well go and try it. I tried both. That is my opinion. The Honda feels like a quad bike the BMW doesn’t. I don’t know how they’ve done it but they have and they’ve done it well.

  • @sunrisejak2709

    For decades I was a BMW fan. Always having the various BMW motorcycle models. Appreciating their attributes. Then I discovered Hondas DCT. And I left the BMW brand as I became an absolute disciple of DCT. Finally, many brands have rightfully determined that some form of automatic shifting is just superior. I can now revisit my love affair with BMW! (Although the DCT box is fantastic too) Manual boxes are archaic and will likely go extinct as they have in the car work. Long live DCT, ASA and the other iterations of auto gearboxes in motorcycling. 👍

However, due more to lust than anything, else came near to trading it in for a SuperDuke early this year. That bike is my taste in appearance, with performance to match. It was another brand and guess what? Three months later, stop using that chargeryou can’t use it. It will kill the battery so I gave up charging the bloody battery and put on a lead acid battery.

    Well It was hell of a good of BMW to exchange it for a new bike after you had dropped it. I decided the GSA is to big and heavy for me. When I bought my current GS. I have a 1200 I think the 1250 might be a little higher. I'm about 5' 11" but my riding pants only have a 30" leg. When I sat on the 1300GS. I was really impressed with the variable ride. Hope this one works out better for you. Did you order your bike without having seen one or having a chance to sit on it? I can flat foot most most if not all of GT or more road orientated ADV bikes from different brands. The Sport or bigger suspension ones are just a bit to big. Yeah, I've dropped mine in the garage😀.

      Some people were laughing and almost shouting, “Spoiled brat!” But let me tell you-if you can’t flat-foot that bike with a full tank of fuel, it’s an absolute beast to handle. I’m 55, pretty strong, and I hit the gym three times a week, so I’m no stranger to heavy bikes. For those of you laughing, I challenge you to try managing one on your tiptoes-then come back to me.

      @@lifeisarideuk Sorry. I wasn't laughing at your misfortune. I was laughing at myself dropping my own bike. It happens to all of us eventually. For me the most channeling time with a GS is when I am parking it. The GS is my max limit. once it starts going over there is no stopping it.

    Curious why you weren't using the Chigee. And a suggestion. Take a look at the DMD2 units. They are also based on OSMand but are a complete system that can be integrated nicely with the BMW whizwheel. I use the T665 which is excellent.

      @@gnmurray5955 because I was testing OSM and on my iPhone for off-road use I’ve been down the DMD route it’s expensive and unreliable and the system lags a lot. Chigee‘s processor is very quick and can keep up the iPhone so what my iPhone delivers took away my pocket in safety not suffering with vibration and not suffering with heat exhaustion and screen dying chigee candeliver

      I’ve done the whole DMD thing £1500 later there’s nothing wrong with Chigee . I was just testing it. I wanted to see it close in the small tracks. I just not got round to hitting it to my bike yet. iPhone can’t cope with micro vibrations and heat, so that needs to go in your pocket. That’s the only reason.

    Nick, I was in Morroco last year and tried to use MyRoute App and it was hopeless. There is insufficient map detail and when you try to navigate it's all in Arabic despite the fact that all street signs are also in French. Despite this I am a huge fan of MRA and have a module that allows me to connect my device directly to the BMW nav prep and I can use the wonder wheel. I found mobile coverage in Morroco to be great and just bought a sim card on arrival.
