Does SoundDevices NoiseAssist plugin change Phase and Mic Tone ?

nice mic. It seems to have some noise during the first test at 12", but for the price.... who will complain? Maybe it can be tweaked by changing some components.
I have not noticed any noise from the mic circuits. There is some room noise since it was recorded in my editing studio with a computer just behind the camera so when speaking at 12 inches some ambient noise is bound to be picked up. I am getting on a bit so your ears are probably more sensitive then mine ! Thanks for your input.
I have the rode nt1a, v5, and 414, and the 414 is the best all-around mic for me.
That's very helpful to know. Thanks for sharing your experience with all three mica.
Just bought a BF414. Sounds great. And hearing your voice in the V5, I´d like to get one. I´m not a pro, but I love microphones. Thanks for your professional review.
I have not had the opportunity to try the 414 but by all accounts it is a great and versatile mic. Thanks for your comment.
Sounds very good.
Yes, Baifeily seem to have surprised everyone with the quality of their recent mics. I have only tried the V5 but that meets all my needs for narration. Thanks for subscribing.
AMAZING BAIFEILI , RODE IS MORE DISTORTION AND NOISE
I am still blown away by the Baifeili V5. The more I use it the more I like it on my spoken voice.

Aaaah. I bought three of these. They make good mics. The price is going up too. I actually heard about the from Mark as well. His channel is great.
Pleased our reviews were helpful to you. Thanks.
Very helpful review, do you know if the battery compartment can hold a V-lock battery?
A naked V-Lock battery will 'just' fit in the battery compartment but there would be no room for a connector. A V-Lock mounted on a battery plate, which you would presumably need to get a D-Tap connection. would not fit in the battery pocket - but you could, of course, put your V-Lock battery with plate in the second compartment of the bag if you do not need it for other kit. The Mix Pre series takes up less than half the depth of the main compartment so that may be an option unless you are using a different, deeper mixer.
It sounds like a much more expensive microphone...
This is no more than a limited demonstration - NOT a comprehensive review of the product. It would be much more helpful if you opened it and showed us the capsule, the internal saddle (capsule mount,) and the circuit board, with capsule and other dimensions. Photos of BaiFeiLi microphones give the impression the capsules are merely low cost electret condenser (some with internal FET) capsules which can be purchased at retail for less than $8 on eBay and other online sites. Your video merely compares the sound in a treated room with minimal variables - it does not really dig deep and reveal the inner workings - i.e., capsule type and quality, circuit board components and quality, and fails to document whether the manufacturer's stated claims concerning self-noise, impedance, frequency curve, etc., are accurate. Failing to demonstrate the mic on different voices is another shortfall - female and more louder or higher or lower toned voices may not work as well as your voice with either of the microphones in the demo. More important, failing to test with musical instruments is a big downer. Your voice covers a very narrow range of frequencies - musical instruments cover a much wider range of frequencies, and the mic may sound terrible outside the vocal range. Musical instruments have very different timber and tonal characteristics, including multiple harmonics, so they are often a much better test pool when testing and comparing microphones. I can get many microphones to sound similar on my voice, but the comparison falls apart when recording music and other sounds. Changing venue is another important variable - it may sound good in your highly treated space, and not in a larger venue, such as recording studio, stage, or other location - e.g., a modest sized room with a vocal quartet or small string ensemble, where ambient noise is a serious consideration. Therefore, this is merely a simple A/B demonstration of two microphones under very limited conditions. NOT what I consider a thorough or particularly useful review. Perhaps you could follow up with a more extensive test? Just MY take. Your mileage may vary. Happy trails to you - thanks for trying. TRJ
Thank you for your very full comments. As you say, my review is quite limited in its scope - it was not intended to be a teardown or technical analysis or an assessment of the mic's suitability for different voices or instruments. It is quite 'coloured' which is its attraction for me - you pick a mic that produces the sound you want for the voice or instrument you are recording. The acoustics of a venue will of course affect any recording on any mic at any price depending on polar pattern and placement, as will the preamps used. May be someone will take it apart and do a more technical review. For me it suits my purpose and my voice for general studio narration - and for the price, well worth a go !
@@chrisdelcan2757 Roger all points understood - Maybe I am expecting too much! IT IS a good demo and proves your point. I did give it a thumbs up! Happy trails to you. Thanks for the helpful reply. TRJ

414 25mm is electret capsule with a transformer circuit like the AudioTechnica. The C414 34mm has a single sided K87 type capsule with a Schoeps CMC circuit style.
You should have many more subs/views than you do, your baifeli v5 video led me to you. You're very easy to listen to & follow along with! Thank you!
Thanks for your kind words. I had almost forgotten about this one !
For VO I think it is a warm clear sounding mic that I actually prefer on your voice compared to the Rode.
Thanks. Yes the Rode sounds a little bit flat in comparison with the V5 which adds a bit of 'musicality' to my voice.
How about the sound of the bag versus the quiet ktek bag ? Are the zippers and clips quiet ? How about those metal rings are the quiet are do they make enough noise to show up in audio recordings?
I have not experienced a problem from physical noise from the bag - but the mic is usually a couple of meters away. The rings are held tight on the Velcro straps, the main strap clips are not metal so don't clink. I don't unzip the zips when recording. The Zipper tabs are quite small so have not caused a problem for me. There is nothing obviously annoying but I guess it depends how you are using it - running and holding a mic in your hand you would probably hear something. [ Sorry, I don't have a quiet K-tek bag to compare it with].
Hey Chris, I've watched the video at least 50 times, and it's very calming and enjoyable. I really hope to see more videos like this one. I wonder, did you test the microphone with budget preamps?
Thank you for your support and kind remarks : x50 plays, that's some viewing ! I will try to do more videos comparing different microphones. Unfortunately I no longer have a budget preamp to try with this mic. You will need a preamp or mixer that can deliver full 48v phantom power. The SoundDevices MixPre3 used for this has a very flat, uncoloured output, so what you hear is quite an accurate representation of 'this' mic's characteristics on my voice. My V5 has a nice warm sound but I don't know how much variation in tonal characteristics there is likely to be between different V5 mics at this price. Hope this helps. ... AND I would say with at least 66db of gain since I need about 57db gain for my quiet narration.
Hey, hey!! Fantastic review! You sound great on it. I'm subscribed!

Very nice warm sound to this, I like it.
Yes it is very warm and smooth - just what I was looking for, thanks to Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff's review.
Thank you for such a detailed V5 review! This is truly a very smooth V/O microphone. The only change I would make is to put a metal mesh behind the plastic window to better protect against radio interference.
Thanks for your comments, much appreciated. I have not had a problem with interference from other equipment or power bricks in practice - just something to be aware of in case it happens. I have found that if you hold the mic in your hand the hum drains off - it only occurs when the mic is in the stand and you put your hand/finger on the plastic window. It also drains off if you touch the bare XLR shell. But under normal use hum has not occurred. I have just put it close to my bank of power adaptors in the shock mount to check but no hum was picked up.

Hi Jen, Thanks for your kind comment.
I was searching every day for new reviews of this mic! Mine is coming this week. Thank you!
I was doing the same after seeing Mark's review but nothing appeared so I took the plunge ! It's a very interesting sounding mic that you can use to create different resonances at different distances - I'm still experimenting with that.
@@delcanvideoproductions4895also as you mentioned in your video, Mark’s voice even makes the mic sound better. I wish I had that voice too hahaha
Yes, he is a top notch voice-over artist with a string of big name credits.
Thanks for the quick reply and for subscribing! I started a wrestling podcast with my son during the pandemic and immediately fell in love with microphones as soon as I held one. I now collect them and switch what mic my son and I use frequently.
Yes, it becomes an obsession ! I have a vintage AKG D202 cardioid 'hand held' barrel mic (the sky rocket) which is a dynamic mic with a treble and a separate bass capsule underneath the treble. The bass capsule is vented via a tube down the inside of the barrel to vents near the XLR so you can use it close up without getting an over-emphasised bass. They were used by BBC radio in the 1960's and 70's but are now quite scarce.
I’ve been waiting for more people to review this mic - thanks! I think it sounds fantastic and prefer it to the NT2. I have the Baifeili V10 (rebadged as a Proar) and it sounds great too, especially for the price.
Thanks. I was surprised that the only reviews were from Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff since I think the mic came out in the early summer of 2023. I hope they will clarify the specs just for the record but in reality it sounds fine and there is no hiss audible on my voice pieces.
Mine is on the way. Appreciate your review.
Thanks. I hope you enjoy using this mic - it is just that bit different and more 'musical' on my spoken voice as well.
How is it?
As usual, a very professional and useful review. Thank you!

It’s to do with signal polarity.. asymmetrical waveforms sound different on headphones depending on the polarity..
At 5:33 / 11:27 The sound is direct opposite of what you are sayin. Totally "Phase voodoo" rubbish. I both listen at your example in the studio on studio headphones and monitors (Dynaudio, Genelecs and PCMs). And by the way, the ploug in is not for making Hi-Fi sound, but for fast doku, interview etc. were you have to delevery as fast as possibly.
Yes, I have had to simulate the sound you would hear if you were listening to your own voice live through closed back headphones in order to illustrate the effect here. You will not normally notice much / any difference when phase is flipped if you are listening through monitor speakers because the sound waves will bounce around the room and arrive at your ears at different times so it is only really noticeable on headphones in my experience. Some voices produce a waveform which sounds more different when the phase is switched. Not everyone will hear the difference - so if you don't hear it it is not a problem !

Very interesting, I dont have noise assit plugin for my sound devices mix pre, but i will try switching the phase to test out my microphones as they use the Primo EM272, Ive watched a few of your videos and this is new terms for me as I've not come across this techncal side of audio before. I wonder if you can answer a question about buzzing on lavs mics? Sometimes when using two lav mics as a stereo pair, there is a mains hum, I even noticed this in my early days of testing various capsules with a Zoom H6, plugged into the plug in power socket, they seem to buzz/hum but when touched (the wires) it would go away, even when outdoors. Have you come across this before?
Thanks for your interest. Did you notice any difference when you flipped the phase of the Primo 272 ? It seems to be more noticeable on some voices but less on others.

The differences in the signal you're hearing when inverting negative phase to positive phase, is due to FET leakage. In the common 2-wire (negative phase) configuration, incoming FET current leakage from (+V) Drain to Gate goes through the gate's high impedance and the capsule's -mV signal output (dips) are unaffected. The FET leakage in opposite direction, when the capsule outputs a high +mV signal, a small diode amount of voltage leaks out to Source and rolls off the peaks. When you invert this signal into positive phase, the dips and rolled off peaks are inverted, so the peaks become more pronounced. -Doug Ford, audio design electrical engineer, explains it a little bit at the end of EEVblog #611 Electret Microphone Design.
Hi Justin, Thanks for that. I could not figure out why flipping the -ve phase mic output produced a different more rounded and open sound, when phase reversal should not have made any difference. So this is why it changes the sound ! I'm really grateful for your explanation. Thanks.
Thanks for that - it went against everything I knew. Not the first time, nor the last, that less-than-perfect real-life components have offered potentially useful 'flaws' !
Bought it based on this review. Thanks!
An A-symmetrical waveform can sound significantly different when the phase is reversed. Many voices, drums, brass and plucked strings produce an A-symmetrical waveform. (See at 7' 40")
This is complete nonsense. Flipping the phase of an audio signal does NOT change the sound AT ALL. What it will do is change how that source interacts with other mics or your perception of the sound in your headphones as you speak and the interaction with your skull. But only as you speak and listen, not playback. It will have *zero* effect on the timbre of the recorded sound itself.
Hi Andrew, Thank you for your feedback. There are two distinct things here - one as you say, is when you listen to yourself live through headphones, where the mic sound interacts with the 'natural' sound in your head - the other is the lesser known phenomenon of a negative phase signal sounding different when you listen to the recording afterwards. There is no obvious reason why a negative phase signal from a single microphone (with no other mics plugged in) should sound different from a normal positive phase signal when you listen on playback to the recording through headphones - but they do often sound significantly different. The negative phase output is often quite stony and harsh, whereas when flipped to positive the sound is much fuller and more rounded. I have demonstrated this many times with different mics. The difference is only noticeable when listening to the recording on headphones where the sound is being received directly and separately by your ears. There is no significant difference if you listen on monitor speakers - I suspect because the sound is bounced around the room space so is not hitting the eardrums as pure separate signals. But why does a negative phase signal sound different on headphones ? The most likely reason is where the recording produces an asymmetrical waveform - many male voices (mine !), brass and strings often produce an asymmetrical waveform and it is probably this that accounts for the audible change in the 'tone' of the mic - although I am not sure why. A few weeks ago I came across a users guide note from AEA about the Coles 4038 ribbon mic, which talks about capturing sound in the opposite phase from the back of the mic and that flipping the phase of the signal from an asymmetrical waveform (eg some voice, drums, bass and plucked strings) changes the sound which, it says, can't be corrected fully by EQ. It says : " If you change the polarity of these [asymmetrical] signals it tends to sound as if you made an EQ change. However, if you try to EQ back to the original sound, you never can get it back. Thus it is a good idea to to watch polarity in microphones, cables, electronics and speakers. " So there is some authority on this phenomenon, which does not yet seem to be explained by sound science. At the end of the day it is what you actually hear that counts - science is only a way of trying to explain natural phenomenon. Have a look at my more recent video covering this and listen to the sound samples on good closed back headphones. - and do some tests yourself. If you can't hear the difference it is not something you need worry about. ruclips.net/video/dx3bYoL3MZ0/видео.html
Hi Andrew, We now have a useful technical explanation from Justin who says (Sept 13 2022) Justin • 5 days ago "The differences in the signal you're hearing when inverting negative phase to positive phase, is due to FET leakage. In the common 2-wire (negative phase) configuration, incoming FET current leakage from (+V) Drain to Gate goes through the gate's high impedance and the capsule's -mV signal output (dips) are unaffected. Great video, great crystal clean low noise sound! Were the soundtracks edited?
Hi, Sorry for the delay in responding. The sound from these mics / capsules was not processed - no noise reduction applied and no EQ, so you can hear the actual sound that the mics produce. The Primo mics are incredibly low noise. Another capsules I have since found is the PUI 5024L which is very low noise (80db) and has a nice warm rounded sound if tht is what you are after. (Also try inverting the phase !!)
Great video, great crystal clean low noise sound! Were the soundtracks edited?
Sorry I missed this when you posted. No, there is no post processing except where I say I have flipped the phase in the edit. These mic capsules are super quiet in terms of self noise but with fairly high sensitivity for the sound you are recording.

Do not connect it to an XLR - the 48 volts will blow the capsule. It needs about 5 volts only. You could convert it to a 2 wire capsule by shorting the source to ground (as at 1'30") and then plug it in to the 3.5mm input on your MixPre3 - set up to have Aux as Mic input. (The Aux input set to Mic delivers about 5v to drive the capsule). The power and the signal will then be on the same wire - connect to the tip of the TRS). This will increase the sensitivity of the capsule by about 10db and it will reverse the phase (which you can flip to 'Invert' back to positive on the MiX Pre3 for the channel you are using). Or you could make a 48v drop down to 5v adapter if you know how to do that (Google it).
@@delcanvideoproductions4895 ok thank you
It seems to me there's worthy audio going on beyond 20kHz, I'd say near 40-60kHz, extensions of lower frequencies, particularly involving metallic objects ringing and clanking about.
Inverting the polarity of a single mono sound does not create ANY change in what it sounds like. If u have two channels that record the same sound, then you will hear a difference if u flip polarity on one of the channels and leave the other as is. That is because the waves start to cancel eachother out in different ways than before.
When I flip the phase at 2.35 there is a difference in the sound. I don't know whether that is because this mic is a 3 wire capsule wired as a 2 wire, which alters the output route on the FET amp in the capsule - but there is a difference on the recording. It is more pronounced when the mic is closer to the sound source. I have run several tests and the difference is discernible on playback, not just when self monitoring live. No real explanation for this since, as you say, phase cancellation can only occur with 2 mics on the same sound source. Thanks for your input.
Awesome!!
Most of the polarity flip difference you are hearing is the signal vs your own bone conducted "head voice." They will either cancel out or reinforce, the two signals, depending on the polarity in the headphones. There is less of a difference to a third party listener, or your own listening after the fact (not live, but recorded playback.) Just thought that might be added to the discussion.
Yes, that is the only explanation - important to know that listening to yourself live can give you a totally different sound - a problem if you are applying EQ. Thanks for your useful comment.
@@delcanvideoproductions4895 I could hear a difference when you swiched them.
@@fitnessboss Thanks for that confirmation. It's not just me then ! Some people can't tell - it is less evident on loudspeakers because the room scatters the sound waves.
