Can this work with any mesh, not just a sphere?
Absolutely!
@@TravisTready ty
So I've played around with this and it does work, however this only works when the shield is stationary, how can I adapt this to a moving target?
You can press "u" for texture coordinates
That is a handy hot key thank you!
hi, how would you replace your sphere mask with a sample texture?
thank you !
This look awesome, sadly I can't hear you even with the volume at max.
I finished all three videos. Do you know if there's a good work around to bring back the depth fade once you add the fresnel? The transparency of the fresnel overrides the depth fade. I tried adding the two together before the opacity and I cant seem to get the depth fade back.
I have been scrapping youtube to find such a tutorial. Nice pace, nice explanations, exactly what I needed keep up your awesome work!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm trying to get back into it soon.
Hii i have a question againn!! 10:10 I tried to copy the same in Unreal 5, but no matter how many times I try again, when the impact is scattered in the Niagara system, it doesn't go in the direction of movement but keeps facing the sky, creating an awkward impact. (The impact with the fixed vertical axis is scattered) In this case, I wonder if the Unreal version is different and it doesn't work like a video even if I imitate it, or if it's because I worked on something wrong
I uploaded an Impact video on my RUclips channel!! I need your feedbackK
It shouldn't be much different. As long as you are spawning the particle system in the blueprint using the hit normal rotation as the particle system's location then you should be all good.
Thanks so much 4 this !! i used it to maje the same ithing in materialX
For anyone not getting the outer glow effect around the 24:40 mark in version 5.3, the "if" node can be expanded below to show a "threshold". Just up the values to something larger, like 0.03 or so, worked for me! Thanks for this tutorial Travis, I have been searching for something like this for weeks, and there is nothing as clear or as in depth as these videos! Thanks again from Spain! ------------------------------ Whoops, I've just seen this was solved by you in a comment below! I will leave it here anyways!
I'm happy to hear that it helped you!
I did have an issue with the glow (with unreal 5.3), I still had the issue with "threshold" == 0.03. Finally realized that your "Hardness" values for sphere mask were 0.5 while mine were 1.0. Once I changed them to 0.5 (+ "threshold" == 0.03) I finally obtained the glow effect. Thx @EUSEBIOCLAN
@@GeckoOverflow thank you !
Hi!! I'm a college student majoring in animation in Korea, I've been referring to your videos a lot while making my graduation work recently, I think your videos are amazing. There's something I don't know well while following this tutorial, so can I ask you a question? 5:41 In Unreal 5, the refraction part is not activated from the beginning like this video, and it is deactivated in gray writing, so even if nodes are connected, the refraction does not appear in the material instance, so what should I do in this case?
Refraction is weird in unreal. The full refraction value is 0 and no refraction is 1. In my video, I set the value to 0 right away which you can see the environment no longer appears behind the transparency. You typically want a value somewhere between 0-1 like a noise texture for your refraction to show some interest in the refraction. In the video I go to that material instance to update the refraction value. When the check box is not clicked in a material instance, the value defaults to to what the master material has that scalar parameter set. In this case zero. But, if the check box is clicked then that value is now being set to what the instance has it at. Let me know if that helps you or if you need more info! Thank you for watching my videos I hope they help you!
@@TravisTready Thank you so much for your kind reply!!
@@TravisTready hi!! I'm here again, I'm following along while watching the bleeding edge part of your video, and I made the node exactly like the video, but when I hit my shield, there's no edge like in the video, and there's no difference from before and after setting the fade. .. Can you tell me why I can't see the edge? 25:11
@@lovers_2019 did you make sure to set your equals threshold?
@@TravisTready I'm so sorry, can you tell me what exactly that means?
Hi, I really like the tutorial. I have one question though regarding the impacts inputs, I am looking to have more than 2 impacts and want them to stay around, how would I go about this?
Nice tutorial. Thanks
Anytime!
Hello. Ty for this tutorial. Can you please refer any good sources where I can learn what's happening behind the scene like regarding the math from Shader perspective? I understand we are converting rectangular to polar coordinates however I can't quite relate it to theory.
www.ronja-tutorials.com/post/053-polar-coordinates/ This guy has a great explaination on how he got there if you want to read up on it.
@@TravisTready Thank you Travis, I really appreciate it. Will take a look into it.
How would you make the shield power down when it takes too much damage, with animation showing it?
so in the shield blueprint, you can make a float value for the health of the shield and then run a branch node that if the health value is positive then do nothing. If it is under the value of zero then you can use a timeline node to change the value of a float from zero to one to the MPC and have that value control the overall alpha.
Would you want to see a part 4 showing this?
@@TravisTready Yes, that would be great to see as a part 4. Just in case the video is too short, it would be also nice to see a power generator powering up the shield and when you damage the power generator it will also switch off the shield.
Just finished the series and got a super nice shield 🤩 Thanks so much ;)
I'm so glad to hear it!
Thank you very much for so amazing tutorial!
You're very welcome!
awesome to see part 3 out. i had just a simple directional burst on my shield before, but looks so much better with this multi-system setup. im still trying to learn, but im on my way ruclips.net/video/iEYo19Ea5j0/видео.html just a video of how my shield turned out. i added some of my own stuff to the material. world position offset on impact and a generated band
Oh my gosh dude that looks so cool! I’m so glad you were able to put the tutorials to good use. Let me know if you run into any issues or want any help with anything else. I’ll happily do another tutorial on anything.
@@TravisTready not sure if its in your wheel house, but breakable glass would be something id be interested in. Cant find a ue5 tutorial on it rn.
I can totally do that. You’ll probably want a 3D modeling software for that. Do you have blender or maya?
@@TravisTready i have blender yeah.
@@austindunn433 cool I'll make a video on how to do it both with Blender and in the engine next.
great tutorial. hope to see that 3rd video eventually.
You're going to be happy when you check youtube tomorrow. Part three is here!
Fantastic! thanks so much for sharing!
I hope it was helpful!
Where is the third part? Please upload! <3
Part three is out tomorrow!
Really excellent tutorial. The material is killer, and your voice is so sensual and soothing. Magnificent experience. 10 out of 10.
I don't know if this is a trustworthy review.
Is posibile to shot from inside to outside?
Absolutely, You would have to set up the shield to ignore collision from the balls when the player is inside the shield and block balls when the player is outside. You can figure that out based on a distance node and use the player and the shield actor locations as the input.
Tutorial starts about 2 mins in
Also, I recommend showing people what it will look like at the beginning of the video.
Thank you for the feedback. That’s a great idea.
Is it possible to add triplanar blending to this? If so any idea how it's done?
I'm sure there is a way but I don't know off the top of my head. Let me know if this is still bothering you and I can look into it.
part2 plz!!!
Part 2 is out now and part three comes out tomorrow!
Hey I know this guy and he's awesome!!
Thanks bro!
Amazing, love it! Thank you so much that really what I want~
Cant Wait for part 2. maybe cover physics collision a bit.
I'll probably make part 2 this weekend. I'll make sure to talk about physics collision a bit. Anything in particular you'd like me to cover?
@@TravisTready Well I'm having a bit of an issue making a bubble shield that replicates. I figured collision out but thats something you may want to consider. Great job though though you've already been much help!
Your channel is a gem. Thank you.
You're a gem <3 thank you for watching. Let me know if there is something specific you would like me to make a video on.
it looks awesome :D
Thank you!
thx bro <3
Happy to help!
Thanks for the initiation, Travis. I have to say that it was smooth, with a good pace and you were very patient. lol
Thank you. Is there anything you would like me to make a video about?
@@TravisTready Hey, Travis. Thank you for asking. Some suggestions: 1 your vfx creation process (like pick one or more effects you made that you like and show the path to the results) 2 simple useful effects without textures. (I personally would like to see in UE with the shadders and Niagara system) 3 terminologies and words used among the vfx artists for the vfx creations (personally I'm ok, I have been learning a lot here and there but for beginners at step 0, it's hard to search for things without proper words I guess) 4 breakdowns of effects (specially with the big ones like superpowerful skills and summons with a lot of different things going on) and I really would like to hear you on the RTVFX podcast Travis McCallum. So far these are the ideas I could come up with. Hopefully it can be helpful for your content creation. Best wishes
I'd love to see more in regards to impacts/ground slams made with this technique. There really isn't much content about that out there! Much love.
That's a really good idea. I just bought a new mic and I was thinking about doing a tutorial series for beginners getting started in Unity and Unreal for VFX. Ground slams and impacts would be a great future video.
Much love back!
This is very nice tutorial, thank you! Keep it up! Wish you all the best!
Thank you I hope it helped you!
Thanks for sharing!
Hope it helped you!
Great Tutorial! Straight to the point. I have a question: how to get rid of that line on the mesh? I have been researching and checking but I couldn't find an answer. Is it related to the Mesh UV? Very grateful for sharing your knowledge and experience. And, Trevis, why are you sharing and teaching?
Great question. I haven't found a great way to get rid of the line other than adding more noise to distort it. I am sharing and teaching just for fun. I am a professional VFX Artist and I know that these videos would have helped me in the past. I have watched so many tutorials over the years so I figured I'd give back a little.
@@TravisTready So kind and thoughtful of you
If you change texture mip more to derivative and add a ddx and ddy node connected to a tex coord it fixes it.
Hello, great tutorial, but u speak a quietly. 7:52 and u can turn on real time for instance material in upper left corner(sorry for english)
Yes good heads up! For those wondering or looking in comments the hot key for toggling realtime is Ctrl-R.
Hey pal. I've just find your channel and wanted to say that, what you're doing is great and important. There is not enough good resources that teaches VFX in Unreal Engine that starts from the beginning (Texture Creation). Please keep up the good work 😊😊 You can up the volume a little bit though. 😅
Thank you for the feedback. You're absolutely right I definitely need a new mic the one I currently use is not great.
OMG, this is what I have been looking for! It has answered the main questions I had. This video should be listed as the first step to making realtime vfx from texture - > material -> particle system. You ROCK!
I'm so happy you enjoyed it. Let me know if you have more questions I am happy to make a video helping you out!
Thank you so much! This was easy to follow and it felt stress-free.
Awesome I hope it helped!
Nice tutorial, I like how in-depth you went with the material. I'd highly recommend switching to Niagara at some point soonish because Cascade won't be being supported in the near future.
Yeah good point. I used Cascade in the video for simplicity sake.
