    Hi Hydi. Thanks for all the good info. I'm Glad your eye is okay. Sounds like something I would do. Most of my life. My Green Thumb has been GANGREEN THUMB. My house is where plants come to Die. But.... In the last 11 years I've managed to grow some things. I found that adding Miricale Grow seems to be the Trick to NOT KILLING THEM. I'm about to plant 12 Arecas behind my privacy fence. Do I need to ad Mirical Grow when I plant them? I wish I would have done this 11 years ago. Oh Well. Better Late than Never.

      Do not add fertilizer when you transplant it can burn the roots. You can find a palm specific fertilizer that is good to use early spring and after rainy season depending where you live. There are restrictions to be mindful of. No need to fertilize when they are dormant. Mulch around them and water should be good to go! Thanks for the comment!

      @@GardeningWithHeidi Oh Crap... I asked the guy at the Garden center about that. He said to put a inch or 2 of BLACK COW manure on the bottom before setting the Areca Palm into the hole. I did that to 13 palms. They have been thoroughly watered and rained on for 3 days. Should I dig them up?

    • @GardeningWithHeidi
      @GardeningWithHeidi 5 месяцев назад

      @BENJAMIN-zi4gv that is fine. The cow manure has been processed to not burn. I was speaking more of the granular fertilizer...you should. E good to go!

      @@GardeningWithHeidi Thanks Heidi. I planted 12 Areca's 5 ft. on center. 3-4 ft behind my Vinyl Fence. Do they have root Balls or creepers? I would imagine they are Creepers. I forgot to check on that. My Main sewer line is 5-6 ft away from them. Inside my fence. Have a Nice Day

      @BENJAMIN-zi4gv you should be fine. They don't creep or send roots that would reach your sewer lines..they mainly go straight down and are not thick roots, list abundant. Keep gardening!

    My son discovered this plant was edible when he was little and ate one of the leaves from a neighbors plant, and got chased away by him! 😅 My question is, what's the best way to prune this plant for better growth? Mine have tended to be puny and not bush out to much.

    • @SAROXBAND
      @SAROXBAND 2 месяца назад

      This used to happen to me till I started to prune savagely and periodically. Try to chose the crescent moon phase and place it where there is indirect sun. Prune without fear because where you prune that will branch out on every single node! Then take the larger leaves off so the plant can thicken and produce new leaves. This made mine produce flowers quicker than usual. Your first trim should be just the top 2/3 leaves so it thickens and starts to branch out. When it’s about 2 feet tall. Hope this helps! Oh, and mine are accompanied by Mexican sunflower for support and biomass.

    Very helpful video - enjoyed learning the history of these beautiful plants. I live on the southwest coast of Florida. About five years ago I planted two small Arecas next to my condo patio for privacy. They are now about 15-20 ft tall and are blocking the upstairs neighbor's view of the lake. I've been asked to trim them to a lower height, but not sure how to cut back the height without damaging the plants. Can I trim off some the higher frounds at the top or will I need to cut at the base of the trunks? This might be a job for a professional, but I wanted to make sure whoever I hire doesn't end up doing permanent damage. Thanks!
