I know Dutch idioms and phrases often don't make sense, especially when translated literally. I also know that there are translators who prefer literal translation over free translation, and of the never-ending debate among translators about which is better. The only thing I will say is that anyone who speaks sufficient Dutch/English (so not folks who speak Dunglish) will never translate ''Ik kan het niet hebben als x'' with ''I can't have it when x'' because it's simply incorrect Signed, a Dutch native who specializes in translation

There are multiple situations where ''I can't have it'' can be used, e.g. when you can't handle certain foods or as a reaction to something potentially happening (''I can't have that happen!''). ''Ik kan het niet hebben als het avond is'' can really only be translated with ''I can't take it when it's evening'' (closest to the original text) or ''I can't bear evenings'' (slightly more freely translated)
