Trail Running Maine's 100 Mile Wilderness (And The Appalachian Trail)
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.3 месяца назад
The 100 Mile Wilderness. Crown Jewel of the Appalachian Trail in the heart of the Maine woods. Chris and Chris spent three days running, hiking and zombie walking this stretch of the trail from Monson to Abol Bridge back in July. This is our story on film, because our words fail to describe the beauty, joy, desperation and pain we felt in one 72 hour period. Day 1 would be the easiest of the 3 ...
Acadia Mountain Marathon - Acadia National Park
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.6 месяцев назад
Trail running every major peak in Acadia National Park comes out to exactly 26.2 miles if you configure the route correctly. Chris and Chris attempt to run this route on what turned out to be record breaking heat for the Maine Coast. With temps hovering in the mid 90's with high humidity, will we be able to finish the run and complete the marathon at Sand Beach? With the route totaling almost 7...
Grand Canyon In A Day: A Rim 2 Rim 2 Rim
Просмотров 2,1 тыс.7 месяцев назад
A Grand Canyon Rim to Rim to Rim in a single push. This is a bucket list item for many trail runners, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Chris and Chris along with their friend August made the trip out from Maine to Arizona to check this one off their bucket list. The weather forecast did not inspire confidence but we were at the South Kaibab trailhead at 5:30am to give it our all. And we did. 13 ...

Thanks for posting - doing some research for a potential circumnavigation this year.
sooooo sick
Another jaw dropping video. Gorgeous place I hope to get to one day. You guys and your videos are inspiring to me- a) to get outside despite the conditions and b) to do something hard ("SEEK DISCOMFORT" is my 2025 theme). While not doing anything like you guys, I am getting ready for a half marathon in early May (my first ever at age 52) by starting my journey in cold midwestern weather. Your adventures fuel me and help my motivation to push through it all. Thank You for this channel! God bless.
Thanks so much for this. We’re super happy to hear our vids serve as a little inspiration. As we get older sometimes we watch our own videos too so we can remind ourselves we can still do these things! Good luck on your half this spring!
Stunning! Top notch. Inspirational. Massive respect! Thank you for sharing this.
Awesome concept, effort and final result! That requires a lot of sourdough bread, pocket bacon and chocolate espresso beans.
Bulletproof crust on Diagonal at night…as hardcore as it can get. Great job, Andrew!
A good nights work! Back in 1979 (in the transition to the modern era of low snow years) I left Pinkham at dusk, climbed Central Gully, switched to running shoes at the Alpine Garden, and crossed over the northern peaks - arriving home in Randolph sometime in the middle of the night. Another good night out, but a lot less vertical than your trip!
Brilliant! Massive respect for putting in the work for this "project". Thanks for sharing and keep yourselves safe! 😎👊❤🏂 Randy
Some guys sit around playing video games when its dark and cold outside- Some guys climb Mt. Washington….at night…..in the winter….to ski down it. 😂
Frankly, what's the point?
One might ask the same question to someone who just ran a marathon, completed their first triathlon, sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, went skydiving, biked their first 20 miles, did their very first backcountry overnight camping trip, stayed up all night to look up and marvel at the night sky, the stars and moon the Milky Way galaxy. Because they believed they could do it, it called to them and thus it was worth doing. The very essence of being human, in our opinion. And that’s worth something. If that doesn’t answer then we really can’t help explain further.
Wicked good bub.
This is so super awesome. Can’t wait to be back on MW
It’s the best
Your video was truly beautiful and inspiring. As a fellow creator, I appreciate the effort you put into it. Sub and 👍
Appreciate this comment!
Epic.
Very cool. Well done 👍!!!
Andrew is a legend of the Whites. I have spent a lot of time in the Whites and I consider myself an amateur compared to him. Thanks for sharing his adventure. You did a very nice job capturing his experience. Thank you
I’ve been in New England wilderness on snowmobile countless times at night. When it’s overcast you can’t see two feet in front of you. With a strong moon in clear skies it’s unbelievable how far you can see especially in winter with light reflecting off the snow. Amazingly beautiful, quiet and peaceful.
Yep, the snow acts a giant reflector once your eyes adjust! Would love to do a winter Presidential Traverse on skis some day under the full moon
very cool concept...love it!
Agreed. This was all Andrew's idea!
Just bad ass.
You guys show people sights we'd never see otherwise. I love Baxter, love Katahdin, but doubt I'll be there in winter. Thank you thank you for sharing the magic of the mightiest mountain ❤
That means a lot! We definitely hope to do some more winter things on Katahdin!
Hells yeahs. Andrew is so clearly in tune with this mountain and the region. Thanks for sharing!
Couldn't agree more
You are right, altitude is what makes Elbert hard, that's about it.
Well done all around! You guys definitely make me want to adventure in the Northeast! Looks like so many cool places, routes, adventures to be had!🙌
that's the main goal of this channel. Psyched to hear this comment!
Really cool. The headlamp was like an ant moving across the landscape.
Was pretty fun to watch in real time as well!
So cool. Love this.
So of course this made me go back and look through all of Andrew's videos, for that shot of the night timelapse on MW. I see Early Season Backcountry but I'm sure there was another one because I can still see that shot in my mind. This is like a genre in itself - you guys could just keep making new efforts with night ski timelapses in the Whites because no matter how good they are, there is more gold in the mine. Such a big effort to get to the vantage point and do all that hiking, touring, and traversing. It's interesting for the physical side of it, the visual product you created, and also the actual videography side of for those of us with a camera. 💯👊🌝🏆
Agreed! This is definitely in the dawn age of Chris S's filmmaking career, so he wishes he did more BTS and was able to use the gear and techniques he has five years later. There is most definitely more potential for this kind of shooting with how close the wildcat range (and other summits on the Presis) are in relation to the great ski lines in our area. Definitely requires a fine mix of conditions to line up properly, so we have to be ready to strike when it happens. Really appreciate this comment!
Amazing. Absolutely gnarly terrain. Would love to get a behind the scenes look at a video like this. How do you get your food/water dialed in? Must have been tough to time it with the moon and the weather too
Yes to all of this. This was Chris S's dawn of filmmaking, so there's a lot less of this than he'd like. We're working on adding more of that stuff into future videos for sure. As for this mission, Andrew probably just brought 6 cinammon buns and some cliff bloks, knowing him. The moon was great and visibility was solid, honestly. The wind was brutal that evening, though...
I did it July 12th-20th. Very hard on gear. My boot fell apart on Barren Mountain and I basically used gorilla tape and glue to keep them together until Joe Mary Road for resupply. It was an incredible experience. I will never forget that place.
When you walk out onto the Golden Road after having done the 100MW, no longer how long you were in there for, you don't come out the same person you were back in Monson. We love the 100MW and yes, the terrain is relentless despite not being a ton of vert. Still haven't seen a moose in there yet...
Absolutely stunning (again). What a test- you guys are total animals and I'm here for it. At the end it got dusty in here for me. So so so inspiring. TY for this one. Happy holidays!
hell yeah - thanks! The last 15 miles were truly painful. While we were relieved to finish in general, getting the stop and not feel the pain from our ailments was such a high. It was one of the best adventures we've had together.
If I correctly guess the location, do I win a prize?
“Boiled some water… so thermal advantage…” Could you explain this comment, please? Sounds like maybe a camping hack I’m not aware of.
Yep! Probably said this sleep deprived and didn't explain myself! Basically, we boiled water and put it into our Nalgene bottles which then went into our sleeping bags. It stays hot all night and adds a ton of warmth to your sleeping bag. Highly recommend it, especially if you're planning on having a cold night but want to keep your gear light with more of a 3 season sleeping bag. Personally, I love the ultralight thermarest gear.
Love this video! Been up and ridden gravel roads at mattawamkaeg lake on an aggressive mountain bike, probably my first mistake. For me, deer flies were absolutely horrendous leading me to feel like quitting 2 miles in, and actually quit 16 miles in. It was horrendous because of the deer flies, probably 50 swarmed my head at all times. Other than that, beautiful up there.
It sounds like you went gravel riding in Maine in July! We agree, deer flies are evil. We try and avoid the open gravel roads in the deep woods of Maine in July if at all possible. June is generally good and Mid August things seem to be fine again. So much potential for gravel rides in this area!
@ mid july, yep. it was pretty bad! thanks for the tip though
You guys are gnarly. Much respect.
We're still cold from that night.
Undisclosed ? Ok buddy
Not sure what you mean, and we don’t appreciate your unwarranted tone in this comment. 👍
Epic video..thanks
Cheers!
Just did haleakala with my wife for our 40th...next stop is this
That's a badass 40th! Chris S will let his wife know about this for his 40th.
I thought you were supposed to wear a harness and be roped to each other in case you fall in a crevasse? I know Katahdhin isnt mount mckinley bit I thought katahdin still had the crevasses and the avalanches and serious shit
Typically one would rope up w/ a harness if the potential mountain hazards like crevasses were present or if the mode of travel was technical and any sort of fall could be dangerous. Often times if the team is comfortable on terrain that is still technically difficult, they might choose not to rope up as the process of being roped up would slow their progress significantly. You won't find crevasses on this route we descended and are rarely found in New England outside of the larger ravines once the spring thaw begins. The biggest problem are slab avalanches in our area, but this trail wouldn't typically have avalanche danger (though I'm sure conditions have made it possible before), which is why we descended it on foot.
Good thing you supported each other!
Doing a version of this in a month in Virginia with a buddy. We call it a “Testakill”. Thanks for the intel and great video!
Hell yeah - how'd it go?!
Subbed. Inspiring stuff ✌
Appreciate it! Looking forward touting more videos out soon!
Great video. Good for you for being honest with yourselves and not pushing too far. I live in southern Maine. Hope to see you guys out there sometime. Got a couple friends crazy enough to come out on my adventures. I get inspiration from videos like this. Thank you 🙏 Stay safe out there. 💪🏼
That's exactly why we started this channel - to show off (mostly) New England adventures and to hopefully inspire more folks to adventure with friends. Hope to see ya out there!
Are there avalanche reports for katahdin posted anywhere?
Would also love to hear about any info/resources you found online that helped you prep for the trip
Baxter State Park does not provide and avy resources for Kathadin. All avy knowledge and backcountry preparedness would need to be done by the individual once in the park. We're pretty familiar with Katahdin and the park, with the biggest unknowns in winter being snow conditions and winter weather in remote, backcountry like Baxter State Park. The best resource is still the park website which has an abundance of info on winter travel. You can always call the park and ask additional questions as well and they'll be happy to answer. There are several older trip reports from when blog posts and summitpost where popular, but they're a bit dated now. They do still provide a good sense of what things look and feel like when it comes to traveling in Baxter State Park in winter. We have another video from Katahdin in winter that's from a longer trip if you want to see more of what the park is like in winter.
Well Done. Another banger. Incredible looking country I cannot wait to see someday.
Appreciate it Rob! It is really beautiful country. Hope you make it out there for a ride.
“Let’s go!” I’ve had that same reaction at busy summits, don’t ever want to hang around 😂
Yep!
Wow! What a journey . You guys are legends
Epic, nice work guys! I can't wait to check it out one day. Maybe not in 3 days (my knees!...) - but at a still-brisk pace :)
Hope you get out there!
Fantastic video and adventure! Can’t believe you got a tent in those packs. The highs and lows were on full display!
Fortunately for us we didn't carry tents on us - just stashed them for the second night :)
@@chrisandchris ah that's the secret...
Hey guys, great ride, hike and video. I was just there recently, camping at Lunksoos, did 75 gravel miles in KWWNM, plus 12 miles kayaking. The overlook section will be closed for the next year or so for maintenance and improvements. There is a 3 mile detour on the Rocky Pond road. There was also a 7 mile detour before the Sand Bank camp but that is now open. The section of the IAT to Barnard Mt down to Orin Falls had been cleared out and is worth the trip. I have been camping, hiking and cycling in BSP for over 50 years and now KWWNM just adds to the adventure. I also visited the new KWW contact station and it is spectacular although not officially open yet. Thanks for the video, loved it and recognized just about all the areas.
Appreciate it Maurice! We did just heard of the loop road closure. Definitely a bummer to hear for folks who were hoping to check it out for foliage, but will be neat to see how they improve it over the next year. Is that IAT section cleared for biking as well or just cleared for foot traffic?
Awesome video and effort. A true fastpacking adventure! Also, how'd you guys like the new Aero 28 pack? I just heard about them, but haven't seen any real-world opinions. Looks like they worked really well, and you certainly used them for their intended use.
Appreciate it! We definitely liked the Aero 28. Worked perfectly for this mission and its intended use for sure. We’d recommend it, the folks at Hyperlite are good friends!
That was a good one.
Appreciate it!
