    • @HerbNerdSchool
      @HerbNerdSchool 9 дней назад

      I've done that ;) as long as your alcohol content isn't below 25% it should be fine, but if you see mold or the jar hisses when you open it, throw it out.

    @JoshFlook-xs1wl Месяц назад

    You should grab yourself a 500-1000 ml soxhlet. You'll get significantly higher yields on both your alcohol and water extracts, it's also really cheap (less than 200$ for your entire setup). It's great for plants too :) I have epilepsy and make a lot of my own medicines

      If it is dried or powdered make sure it has both the mycelium and fruiting bodies but all the figuring she does is removed if you use powdered you can stick to the 1:5 method but you will still double pull

    • @HerbNerdSchool
      @HerbNerdSchool 9 дней назад

      nope, but it is easier to control the alcohol content and calculations with dry. I've received a lot of feedback that hydrometers aren't reliable so I recommend just doing dry. This would change your ratio of dry lion's mane to solvent to a 1:3 or a 1:5 (the lower the ratio, the more concentrated the medicine).

      you can keep the ratio the same for a more concentrated extract but you'll get a low yield. Typical dry mushroom ratios are 1:3 or 1:5 but experiment on your own to see what you like best. The higher the ratio, the more watered down the final tincture will be.

    Thanks for this video. You started with 580 g of fresh mushrooms. If I start with 200 g of dried lions mane, what ratio do I use to determine milliliters of water? Ex. 1:2 ratio of 200g is 200g X 2 = 400 ml of water?

    • @HerbNerdSchool
      @HerbNerdSchool 9 дней назад

      That math is correct for a 1:2, yes. Typically, dry herb/shroom extracts are done at a higher ratio. Some herbalists like to do a 1:3, some prefer a 1:5; the higher the ratio, the more diluted the extract, the lower the ratio, the lower the yield...

  • @Cervin_Suisse

    I have read in a few places that alcohol extraction will deteriorate the potency of the Beta-glucans, whereas hot water extraction won't. On the other hand the single water extraction step will not make the erpenes and phenolic compounds bio available. What is your opinion on this ?

    • @Cervin_Suisse
      @Cervin_Suisse 7 месяцев назад

      I read the same thing in different places. The consensus is that one should do the hot water extraction 1st then the alcoholic one afterwards(then I suppose they should be mixed when in liquid form). Some use two different batches of mushrooms, one for each method on extraction(costly). Ultra-sonification at low temperature is claimed to extract both types of compounds at once. However the proper ultrasonic equipment is price prohibitive to produce one's own consumption.

    • @Cervin_Suisse
      @Cervin_Suisse 9 дней назад

      Yes indeed equipment is cost prohibitive for personal needs. I personally tried heat extraction followed by ultra sonic hot baths/evaporation in one of those ultra sonic cleaning tubs. I can't measure the contents of the active ingredients present after the process but it should be more that simple dehydrated and ground mushrooms.

    Very nice video. I hate to be picky, but I think you were supposed to add 875 ml of pure water to the 750 of decoction. You want to more than half the alcohol %. The volume of diluent should be more than the original decoction/menstruum/effluent. That is why your final hydrometer reading is at 35%, not 30%. Sorry, I used to be a Chemistry teacher. :)

    • @HerbNerdSchool
      @HerbNerdSchool 9 дней назад

      Yes, although I would recommend a solvent exchange where you first extract in alcohol to ensure you extract the brain-protective constituents and then cook off the alcohol (ideally with an electric burner so you aren't evaporating alcohol near an open flame). Replace the alcohol with glycerin. Glycerin isn't as stable of a solvent so you want to just skip adding the water extract and be sure that the glycerin you add in is at 60% or more, or keep in the fridge.

    Great explanation. However I find 15% alc to be the best for tinctures. I make a normal dual extract using 500g of dried fruit, 1l Ethanol and 1l water. Soxhlet extract with each for 8 hours and then I distill off all the ethanol and weigh the total decoction and add 15% total volume ethanol. Leaving a pretty good extraction with 15% alcohol content. This can be replaced by vegetable glycerine if you do not like alcohol

    Hey, Brilliant video, well explained, very clear and easy to follow! Thank you for this! You are the first one I found in loong time! I have 2 questions, there is so much confusion out there about this, and I trust you can bring light on this. 1. Fresh or dried? 2. 95% or less is enough? What exactly are we extracting with the alcohol?' 3. What is the equision then for double extraction Using fresh lion´s mane I understand it is essential to use 95% alcohol or else it will be like trying to extract the components in beer. Btw, what are those chemical we are juicing out? Is it possible to use dried lion´s mane (does it still have all the goodness?) and extract it in vodka (is it strong enough to extract those chemicals?)? Let´s say it is possible. How do I get to a double extraction? Using the same equision? I assume, the % will go down to 35 already during the 2 weeks. How do I have space then to introduce water extract into my tincture? Is it possible at all? Thanks a lot! This will solve the last bit of the mushroom-riddle! :)

    • @HerbNerdSchool
      @HerbNerdSchool 9 дней назад

      wow, quite the comment! I'll do my best to help: 1. Fresh or dried? either is fine, but dry is easier to control. they should both be just as potent. 2. 95% or less is enough? What exactly are we extracting with the alcohol? Hericenones and Erinacines are alcohol and neuroprotective. 3. What is the equision then for double extraction; see this video: ruclips.net/user/live7ukoVnxfSTI?feature=share Good luck!
