Have You Ever Picked Up Hay in Your Youth? Not Fun, was it?
Enjoy thinking about my youth - how things were done then vs. now! Picking up hay was a job I did not enjoy but was a way to make money in my teens and 20's (late 1970's & 80's). What stories do you may have in doing this?

Thanks for the good advice. What I hate is when doctors look like high schoolers.
lol. Agree! My PCP changed about 3 years ago on me. 1st time I saw him I would have sworn I knew more about medicine than he could! But turns out I like him a lot & is very intelligent. Thks for watching & the comment. Jeff
I just played at it a couple times helping my uncle in Ohio. Nowhere near as much as Y'all handle. Stacked it in the barn. At 130lbs. you were throwing almost half your weight over your head constantly. A lot more impressive than you think. Very impressive being able to throw the bail three high now. Just thinking about it hurts. Top dollar machinery you son has got. Sure makes it easier. Never seen that equipment before. Thanks. Steve
I think between the hay & tobacco, which is also very manual, may be the reason my shoulder is playing out on me!😩 The equipment my son bought really makes it easier in the field & barn that we both remember. Thks for comment. Jeff
My Favorite Non financial Retirement Planning Book: How to retire wild & free!
I’ll check the book out. Thks!
@RetiredFarmboy Highly recommend the audio book too!
I would write down what I think I want - and delay gratification for 30 days
A list maker; I’m one of those too! Thks for comment. Jeff
Good list. I agree that it would have been great to be more outgoing when I was much younger. I’m pretty good at it now but back then all I did was keep to myself. I would add a slightly different take on the health, I would tell myself to not abuse my body so much. I did way too much heavy lifting and hard, strenuous work. At this point the arthritis is for real.
Guess I did the same; I never thought I would have aches & pains that I do now. Thks for watching
Hey this is Dallas and Anna! We enjoyed your video!
Hay Yall! Thks for watching! Hope you are doing well. Keep your Honeymoon going until you become PARENTS!! 🤪 LOL. Hope we see yall again sometime soon. Jeff
Pretty cool. Never seen one with a string before.
My son saw this equipment at the Farm Machinery Show in Louisville we go to each year in February. We always see something we are interested in, but usually have forgotten about it by the time we get home😀. But he ended up buying this equipment (4pieces) a couple months later. This video was supposed to be the new 3 minute Short, but not many people are saying it works, including me now! I plan to do a true video of this equipment
@@RetiredFarmboy looking forward to it
Thanks for the video.
Thks for watching. Jeff
Great advice
We can only hope huh. Thks for watching
Good list. I definitely agree with the wedding one. My son got married this year and he and his wife were going to do a destination wedding in Europe. They ended up getting married in a small civil ceremony surrounded by the most important people in their lives. Way better from my perspective. I also agree on the funeral one. We have been doing advance planning to take this burden off our loved ones and to save some money. On the eating out, we prefer to do this at lunchtime where the portions are about the same but the price is about 50%.
Same here on eating out. We usually try to catch the lunch special Al’s. Thks for comment. Jeff
I definitely have a few of those. The one that is the hardest for me to understand though, is Botox. I just can’t understand why anyone would pay for something that looks painful and grotesque.
The expense of doing Botox regularly, as many do, would seem to run into serious money for something you can’t run away from - aging. Good to see you back on RUclips!
I retire in 1 year and 2 months. 👍
Getting close! What is your 1st task/goal after retirement?
Suzie just wants you to have enough. If you are retired for 30yrs then you need quite a bit of money. She is encouraging you to invest in the stock market. It is a great way to learn about money, and how to take care of yourself. I am frugal and know much of my money will go to the next generation. They will be rich for sure. She is worth about 50million, that is all in bonds.
I agree she wants all to have money to last but think her message is unrealistic for most
So many a holes out there. I avoid so many due to their narci behaviors.
Yeah there are. I avoid them them as they do not benefit my life. Thks for comment. Jeff
I am glad I am a Republican. If Trump doesn't win I will move to a red state for sure. Sanctuary cities has to end due to just letting things go by the Dems to the point of destruction.
Sanctuary cities don’t seem to offer any positive outlooks. It seems to destroy an otherwise vibrant city.
I love to goof off more and not having things to do. I feel most content when I just do the minimal amount from a list.
lol. The other items on the list can wait most of the time
I am lifting more weights in my retirement. I lift heavier weights. It is better to lift heavy rather than do more reps. I am walking and I enjoy it a lot.
Good for you. Health is wealth!
My back's been shot since age 13.
You appear obese and need to clear your throat alot.Take care or you will not live long enoughm
She is an idiot.
Hi Farmboy
Thks for comment
All true Farmboy, except for maybe the taxes 😡
Yeah the Taxman never stops; hopefully doesn’t take as much. Thks for comment & watching
@@RetiredFarmboy it’s a sensitive topic for me because we are converting some of my IRA to a ROTH. Trying to lower our future RMD’s before we start SS and Medicare. As a result we are paying taxes similar to when I was working. At least this is my choice but we are doing it to avoid a huge bill in our 70’s.
@@FailureatRetirement I get it then. But will be best for the future
Sorry for the bluntness, however, Suze is a moron.
It's absolutely absurd that you need $350k a year to live. Maybe in the Hamptons... but the 99.9% of us don't need that kind of money.
Agree. Has to be a different zip code than I live in. Thks for watching. Jeff
Agreed. I don't even know anything about baseball but I know who he is
lol. That’s says a lot about his legend then😀 Thks for watching. Jeff
She obviously has a much higher standard of living than you and I do. Just another celebrity who has lost touch with reality.
Agree. But how does someone get themselves so far removed from common sense & reality? Thks for comment. Jeff
@@RetiredFarmboy I think they make so much money, so easily, that it distorts their reality and then they start to feed on their own hype. That’s all that I can figure. She lost me a long time ago over something similar. I’ve actually seen a similar thing in farming several times. A younger guy will start farming and have some success and within a few years they build a massive operation. When they start turning a couple of million dollars a year the price of a new truck doesn’t really move the needle anymore and they start getting at least one new one every year. The problem is that they grow so fast that they lose sight of the debt they carry and then it only takes one little thing to trip them up. It’s really just lifestyle creep.
Suze Orman is a self serving ass.
Suze Orman is a self serving ass.
Drunk bastard who was playing against farmers. 😂😂😂
It’s a hell of a workout going days on that thing
Sounds like you have done it huh. I had only kayaked 16 miles in my life before starting down the Mississippi. Not the smartest time to learn I know. Thks for comment. Jeff
Interesting video. New sub here. I am 51 and am thinking about early retirement at a minimum of 56 years old because I had cancer, and it negatively impacted my energy. I am going to keep working at least until I can stop taking my cancer drug in 3 years. I'm concerned about what health insurance will look like if I retire before I qualify for Medicare.
Sorry to hear about your health issues. Hope you can regain your health as close as possible to what it was…My wife & I were just talking tonight about healthcare costs as she plans to retire in a year or 2. I turn 65 next June so I’m just now looking into what Medicare offers. Good health is very important but having good insurance is just as important. Good luck to you & TY for subscribing. Jeff
@RetiredFarmboy Thanks for your kind words. I would appreciate it if you post a video on this topic after you and your wife do some research:)
@@SA-wh4es I will. Take care!
There is nothing new about this "micro-retirement" thing. This always happens near economic/market tops. Foolish people get to thinking things will always be this way and decide to take a break. Then they come back to a deteriorating economy/market, get wrecked, and never do it again.
For me the interesting trend is how young people have embraced it. I know a few people who did take a leave of absence but were usually well established in their career & likely had the funds to do it. I sure wouldn’t have had the funds to do that in my 20’s or 30’s. The younger generations seem to always kick things down the road(having kids, buy home, etc). I wonder how it will be for them in retirement age
Thks for comment. Jeff
@@RetiredFarmboy How will it be for Millennials in retirement? They already had their retirement. It occurred in their teens, twenties, and even some of their thirties. No generation before or since delayed entering the workforce like the Millennials did...by a lot. It was then called "The Millennial Collapse," though nowadays what about Millennials is not a collapse of one thing or anther.
Your first mistake is taking investment advice from Dave Ramsey😮
I think Dave Ramsey process on helping people get out of debt is his strongest message. I agree his investment advise & expected returns is a little much.
They ewe gunna get some horn.
Looks like they are headed to the buffet
lol. That’s what everyone does in Vegas !
We are almost done with our remodel after several years of planning and waiting. We bought our home in 2019 to get out of the traffic and away from the people in our old neighborhood. We knew the house would need some work but it was on seven acres and we wanted the additional space (we had 1.5 acres). Our lives have improved so much since we moved that it’s hard to wrap my head around. The only pointer that I can think to tell you about is to be mindful of your property taxes. I don’t know how it works in your state but if I did what you are talking about, in California, it would dramatically increase my property taxes. It’s complicated, and your state will be different, so I’m not going to get into it but there was a lot of strategy involved with us moving when we did. Make sure you research your tax laws.
State gonna get their tax $$ for sure. In Tn, they have a Greenbelt program, which substantially lowers your taxes if you have 15+ acres. My 65 acres & home is less than $1500/yr. They would be
…(continued) 2-3 times more without Greenbelt
Hope y'all had a great vacation. Although I am still 118 days away from retirement, the thing I am looking forward to on vacation is not having to take a laptop to keep up with emails and issues that come up.
lol. That is something that someone who was on call basically the 37 years I was in IT can relate to as well! You are getting real close. Sounds like you will be retired before the holidays which will be a great time to retire!
Can you eat them?
I’m sure they are protected from hunting them, but they are a sheep. I would say you could
I currently have just over 18 months of living expenses. I will have to buy a car between now and the end of the year as I will have to give up my company car. I expect to have roughly a year's worth of living expenses left. I plan to try and keep this at this level to provide a way to ride out downturns in the market when I start drawing from my retirement accounts.
You appear to be more conservative than me even!👍 Good thoughts on the vehicle “allowance”. I wonder if many people take in to account the big ticket items that are going to happen. My wife & I focused on upgrading our vehicles as part of prepping for retirement. Thks for comment; wish you the best. Jeff
@@RetiredFarmboy I never considered myself overly conservative. My goal with having a conservative cash position is to mitigate a little more aggressiveness on the equity side. My plan is to split my retirement accounts. One will be a traditional 3 fund strategy (stocks, bonds, cash), and the other I will use to trade options. In a perfect world I can make enough trading options to let the majority of my portfolio sit and grow. 120 days and the journey begins!
@@OldGuyTalksMoney great plan & you’re gonna love retirement!
@@RetiredFarmboy What part of TN do you live in? We are outside Columbia
@@SCIGS30 I live north of Nashville in Robertson county, so we aren’t too far apart.
When I first tried to retire all that really happened is that I just changed my routine. I really didn’t know how to not work. I did slow down and work less but I wasn’t debt free so I really focused in on doing what it took to solve that problem. After becoming debt free I was really able to start letting things go and start relaxing. A few years ago a friend of mine offered me a really good job doing something related to my last real job. I told him that I would be happy to help him if I was able to show up around 11, go to lunch around 11:30 for 1-2 hours, go home around 2, and that I would need to make at least six figures. He seemed to understand that I valued my free time 😂
lol. That’s kinda of the way I feel!😀
I have been retired 15 months and I have had no desire to work again. I haven't even added any additional volunteer hours. I had been working since the 70s and I needed to rest! It looks like you are enjoying your retirement. Congratulations!
Same here Dan. Once I was retired a few months, the urge to work ain’t been there! Thks for comment. Jeff
We love personal finance as well! You can never learn enough. We are 350ft off the road and still hear some noise from our backroad but being so far off is a great for privacy.
Other finance geeks! Yeah! lol. I play in my spreadsheets running scenarios & such. My wife thinks I’m a little nuts sometimes but she plays along well.😀we are looking forward to being away from the road. Maybe a little far but as private as we can get on my farm. Thank yall for watching & comment. Good luck to you in your RUclips growth! Jeff
@@RetiredFarmboy Thanks Jeff! We are in spreadsheets all the time as well. Nothing wrong with taking control of your finances!
I had a pretty good herd of wool sheep when I was in high school. I don’t remember exactly but I think around 25 ewes.
I went to a sheep shearing school out of curiosity a couple years ago. Man that is a lot of work! This will prob be my last time breeding my sheep in October. Bout tired of em & the work.
@@RetiredFarmboy I never went to school for it but I’ve shorn a few. It’s for the young. That are a lot of work. I gave mine up to go to college.
@@RetiredFarmboy when I moved to this house five years ago only one side was fenced, that neighbor has cattle. I decided it was a good time to lead an animal free life. I had animals for about 40 years and I’m not sorry that I don’t have to look after them anymore.
Hey, thanks for the shoutout!! Personal growth is so important, keep on pushing brother 👍🏼🇺🇸 I had to take a little break. I always film outside and it’s been way too hot here for that. I have been busy with other things as well. Should be back soon.
Yeah been very hot & very dry here for most part. I tend to start outside chores in early morning now. By the time I finish, I am so sweaty & dirty, it wouldn’t be too good a look on video! Guess we should get cooler weather soon with August ending.
Thanks for the video Jeff! Looking forward to your future videos once the heat breaks where you are.
TY! I do spend a lot of time outdoors in summer with farm chores, but I try to hibernate as much as I can. Can’t take the heat like I use too. 😩Guess summer should begin winding down soon.

Thks for the comment & for subscribing. I’m sort of a finance geek myself so plan to check out your channel. Maybe you can help me learn a few tricks! Thks again Jeff
Was that in dolly wood
Yes it was. You must of been there before too!
The percentage is irrelevant other than playing spreadsheet games. There is a difference between NEED and WANT. If i have a Dave Ramsey net worth with income from real estate it doesn't matter to him if it's 4, 8, or 10%. If I have $100,000 it makes a HUGE decision. Without knowing your net worth or expenses or NEEDS the percentage discussion is just NOISE
My attempt was to show a need to be flexible with your withdrawal rate while discussing a couple of methods that are talked about so much. Totally agree you need to know the things you mentioned - expenses, net worth, & how you plan/want to live before deciding. You always need to plan based on your means. Thks for your comment; appreciate it.
Waiting till 70 to collect SS is ambitious. I hope people are honest with themselves when they look in the mirror.
I agree that 70 is ambitious. I think the longer I am in retirement, the more I slide towards taking SS earlier. I plan to do a video soon on this. Thks for the comment; appreciate it. Jeff
