Have You Ever Picked Up Hay in Your Youth? Not Fun, was it?
Enjoy thinking about my youth - how things were done then vs. now! Picking up hay was a job I did not enjoy but was a way to make money in my teens and 20's (late 1970's & 80's). What stories do you may have in doing this?

I just played at it a couple times helping my uncle in Ohio. Nowhere near as much as Y'all handle. Stacked it in the barn. At 130lbs. you were throwing almost half your weight over your head constantly. A lot more impressive than you think. Very impressive being able to throw the bail three high now. Just thinking about it hurts. Top dollar machinery you son has got. Sure makes it easier. Never seen that equipment before. Thanks. Steve

She lost me a long time ago over something similar. I’ve actually seen a similar thing in farming several times. A younger guy will start farming and have some success and within a few years they build a massive operation. When they start turning a couple of million dollars a year the price of a new truck doesn’t really move the needle anymore and they start getting at least one new one every year. The problem is that they grow so fast that they lose sight of the debt they carry and then it only takes one little thing to trip them up. It’s really just lifestyle creep.

There is nothing new about this "micro-retirement" thing. This always happens near economic/market tops. Foolish people get to thinking things will always be this way and decide to take a break. Then they come back to a deteriorating economy/market, get wrecked, and never do it again.

I know a few people who did take a leave of absence but were usually well established in their career & likely had the funds to do it. I sure wouldn’t have had the funds to do that in my 20’s or 30’s. The younger generations seem to always kick things down the road(having kids, buy home, etc). We are almost done with our remodel after several years of planning and waiting. We bought our home in 2019 to get out of the traffic and away from the people in our old neighborhood. We knew the house would need some work but it was on seven acres and we wanted the additional space (we had 1.5 acres). Our lives have improved so much since we moved that it’s hard to wrap my head around. The only pointer that I can think to tell you about is to be mindful of your property taxes. I don’t know how it works in your state but if I did what you are talking about, in California, it would dramatically increase my property taxes. It’s complicated, and your state will be different, so I’m not going to get into it but there was a lot of strategy involved with us moving when we did. Make sure you research your tax laws.

I did slow down and work less but I wasn’t debt free so I really focused in on doing what it took to solve that problem. After becoming debt free I was really able to start letting things go and start relaxing. A few years ago a friend of mine offered me a really good job doing something related to my last real job. I told him that I would be happy to help him if I was able to show up around 11, go to lunch around 11:30 for 1-2 hours, go home around 2, and that I would need to make at least six figures. I had a pretty good herd of wool sheep when I was in high school. I don’t remember exactly but I think around 25 ewes.

@@RetiredFarmboy when I moved to this house five years ago only one side was fenced, that neighbor has cattle. I decided it was a good time to lead an animal free life. I had animals for about 40 years and I’m not sorry that I don’t have to look after them anymore.

Hey, thanks for the shoutout!! Personal growth is so important, keep on pushing brother 👍🏼🇺🇸 I had to take a little break. I always film outside and it’s been way too hot here for that. I have been busy with other things as well. Should be back soon.

Yeah been very hot & very dry here for most part. I tend to start outside chores in early morning now. By the time I finish, I am so sweaty & dirty, it wouldn’t be too good a look on video! Guess we should get cooler weather soon with August ending.

TY! I do spend a lot of time outdoors in summer with farm chores, but I try to hibernate as much as I can. Can’t take the heat like I use too. 😩Guess summer should begin winding down soon.

Just wanted to let you know I have subscribed and enjoy your content. As a fledgling channel, you said something that resonated with me. I didn't start my channel to make money. Your comment that you are competitive enough that you want to be eligible is exactly how I feel. I started my channel as I have a passion for finance and feel many people lack a good foundation of personal finance knowledge. Wish you the best and success in your channel!

The percentage is irrelevant other than playing spreadsheet games. There is a difference between NEED and WANT. If i have a Dave Ramsey net worth with income from real estate it doesn't matter to him if it's 4, 8, or 10%. If I have $100,000 it makes a HUGE decision. Without knowing your net worth or expenses or NEEDS the percentage discussion is just NOISE

My attempt was to show a need to be flexible with your withdrawal rate while discussing a couple of methods that are talked about so much. Totally agree you need to know the things you mentioned - expenses, net worth, & how you plan/want to live before deciding. You always need to plan based on your means. Thks for your comment; appreciate it.

Waiting till 70 to collect SS is ambitious. I hope people are honest with themselves when they look in the mirror.

I agree that 70 is ambitious. I think the longer I am in retirement, the more I slide towards taking SS earlier. I plan to do a video soon on this. Thks for the comment; appreciate it. Jeff
