For a person looking to move to NZ to learn building, would you advice a study at a school or how do you suggest i go about it ?
Loving your videos bro 😎 Keep them up
That’s the best and greatest tool in the whole world. Wish I had one many years ago. 😊
Yeah I’ve used past by date plaster. Goes off very quickly 😊
I’ve heard of a story rod and Brick layers use them. 😊
Hey bud, I know what you mean by being hard on the body. I actually did the opposite, I started in construction at 18 and thought I was in shape! I ended up quitting because it was too hard physically and took an office job. To start over again, I'd pace myself more and not listen to a team of dumbasses that treat you like shit, I'd join a slower team, dedicated to quallity of work instead of quantity.
Very nice (said in a Borat voice).
You forgot the old 'smash / beater chisel'....always good to smash some waste away or to throw at your mate if he's not listening to you lol.
❤ 👏
Awesome video man! - Really inspiring and nice hearing ur perspective on it. I'm changing fields from tech and digital design into carpentry and can't be more excited. I'm 28 and the mindset from creating things meant for advertising isn't satisfying - whenever i did reno's, its rewarding seeing the results being practical and not just used to sell. Wishing you the best on ur journey mate!
Try spaying WD-40 on clips. Same results.
could you take me like your apprentice?l like the trade of carpenter... l used to make furnitures with pallets woods in africa
I'm getting recommended so many aussie carpenters lately after starting as a general hand for a builder/carpenter one and a half months ago at 35 now 36. I had no idea mature aged apprenticeship are as common as they are. Makes me think there could possibly be light at the end of the tunnel to have a qualification although I couldn't afford the mortgage on those wages. When I bought the house I was a forkie earning way more than I have in construction so far, except for that day a certain large group of protestors broke the glass sliding door in the city. I got a big pay for that day but I think it was like 15 hours work from memory. Anyway got sick of the nepotism and lack of any real skill progression/advancement and decided to take a leap of faith into construction. What construction does pay higher in however is overall satisfaction when you can look back at things you've been a part of/helped construct and a whole lot of variety. I had no idea carpenters did so much as I was a laborer for a commercial builder before this but he ended up retiring. I also bought up a bunch of m18 fuel tools and bought some of the old bosses stuff when he was selling up so I try to make up for lack of knowledge by being able to bring some of the tools the other boys don't have/backups so I don't have to borrow theirs. Even got nudged into buying a tool belt and estwing 😅 Anyway loving this while it works, I'm trying to soak up all the knowledge I can of the trade. It's also cool to see the perspectives in this video and the comments.
I’m 39 and just started as an arborist apprenticeship. Most of my background is fitness but I have also done many other things. Never stop learning , it’s really not too late. I plan to also start a carpenters apprenticeship once I get great at my current job. Great attitude , stay healthy and keep posting your journey
What would you suggest to someone who is 31 and thinking to start apprenticeship in carpentry? How do i find s job? Ive got couple years of experience in trade assistant in commercial carpentry and couple years of experience in residential labour. I've got all the tools and a reliable ute.
Honestly mate if that's what you have get your name out there. Resume send to multiple builders that actually have chippies employed. Then follow up on those resumes. Check it was received etc. Look at smaller builders I reckon. The hardest bit will be finding a good one. Watch more of my videos mate. I've got afew installments focused on this. Build on legend. You ll get it if you want it.
@midlifecarpentry thanks legend. Your comment was really helpful.
That’s on my list to pick up too! Interesting to see how you like it compared to the old one!
@warwickbourke I've borrowed the 18v version. So nice to use, just got a fat head on it. Wait see if it's an issue I guess.
Oh ok. Yeah definitely seems a little chunky. I’m still using my corded Fein that’s 15 years old but the cord is starting to really annoy me lol
You can get a third party adaptor to accept the normal type blades
Thanks mate. I'll look into that. Always good to have options.
@ no problem. Especially when you get a bulk pack of blades from Amazon to chew through the rough work and save the good blades for the finish work
Hahaha 100%
Are you from Wa?
WA as in Western Australia?
Teenagers let this sink in there getting on the tools at 40 when all of us that did a apprenticeship at 16 are getting off them at 35
True hey. It's hard money wise either way hey. Lol. Bodywise.... well yer 😅
That’s how I’d tackle it too! Looks good to me 👍 one of the older fellas uses silicone to glue his joints. Says it lasts longer and holds a tighter joint.
mate to be honest the tax code is made for corporations. theres a reason so many tradespeople are working for cash and not reporting all their income. as someone who went to university for accounting i can tell you sincerely if you have opportunities to earn cash and avoid tax, do not be concerned about the ethical and moral issues with tax avoidance. the system is a joke for small business and sole traders such as yourself
Yer, I kind of always felt that. Thanks for commenting on it. Hoping it all comes out in the wash for me soon. Over the waiting tbh. Opportunities with the possibilities of a donation is always on the card😜
I want to hear the guys at the jobsite reactions, do they know this video exists?
hahaha yer man. All the guys know about the channel and are frequent watches. God only know why HAHAHAHA.
What an absolute joke! They’ll try and screw you at every opportunity! It’s definitely a testing time for us! Hope it’s sorted soon 🤞I look forward to what you have coming up for us 👍
Thanks mate. It's a process. Good thing is now I can share with you guys the outcome. Hopefully helping someone out in the long run.
Hey mate following in all your journey , I just got my mature age apprenticeship finally after two years . Just a quick question , the loan support from the goverment is tax free? Thank you mate ❤
You don't get taxed on the payment. But you do need to pay it back through your tax.
Props off to you for being honest and transparent from behind the scenes of what no one sees. I’m a qualified chippy in Melbourne with a wife and two kids, it’s bloody hard and the powers that be don’t make it any easier. Cheers bro, keep up the great content
Thanks mate. So important to share this stuff. No one really tells you this before you start. But wouldn't change it for the world. You a Sole trader or employed?
@ exactly right mate! Oh how I wish I could go back to when I was 16 years old with the knowledge of life and a much more level head. I’m employed, I work for my Dad. Just a small family company along with my Mum. We mainly do renovations (bathrooms, kitchens, laundry ect), so I’ve got a wide knowledge across the different trades
Ужасное крепление ящиков🤦♂️🔥🔥🔥🔥
Can you fit 2 pallets on the toyota hiace this model or 24 models??
i've got the spec sheet and it says it has 3180 mm load length on the SLWb, and 2530 on the LWB [this one]. but that goes right to the back door and right to seats, so your mileage will vary
The SLWB apparently let's you load a pallet through the side doors as well as the rear. Was a dealer comment though. Lol. Yer LWB is big enough for me.
I am a Red Seal Carpenter and I started my journey when i was 45 yrs old.
Awesome mate. Never to young hey.
Glad you're doing well mate. Younger guy pushing 30, the amount of bitter pessimism surrounding entering the trades later in life is demoralising, but your positive attitude helps put things into perspective. Cheers
Happy to help mate. Have you made the jump yet?
3+ minutes history on barn doors… ?? Luckily nobody can open barn doors like he can…
Love the channel name...Im 50 and in my midlife carpentry yrs
Thanks. Twas the wife's idea hey. I wanted to become a carpenter at 40years of age.
I think you meant _principles_ rather than principals, but maybe it's different down under.
Indeed I did sir. Noted and Thank you.
I call it Straight plumb square and plane. But it's the same everywhere! A Carpenter who has learned in China can go to another country and build there! The foundational principles are all the same!
We need a charger which can do 40V and 18V.....i don't want to carry 2 chargers.
Mate, Just go into your tool shop and ask for the Makita 40V to 18V Adapter. Then you just use the 40V Charger. Hope that helps mate. Might need to do a Short on this one.
Use some citric acid when mixing
I'm 37 about to start an apprenticeship next year fuck me I'm nervous
Take every day as it comes. First couple of years may feel the hardest. What trade mate?

You’re amazing men ❤
Appreciate you taking the time to say so. Cheers
Love your videos mate. Keep on going. You’re doing great ❤🤙 thanks I am from Philippines living in Australia. Your videos motivate me to do trades. Thanks heeps
Cheers Mate. Appreciate it. Has been a crazy ride so far.
Love this energy. You’ll make an excellent foreman one day!
Cheers Mate.
You have a fight with it or something mate😂
Yer mate, Jumped out at me...... 😂
It’s a ripper little vac 👍
They go good for those little clean ups. Saves you dragging a big thing up the stairs. Hope you been good mate.
Yeah super handy! Too true! Yeah I’ve been great. Keeping busy and getting it done! Hope you have been doing well 👍
Do you intend to go out solo? Maybe go builder route? If you can go back, would you pick electrical/plumbing instead?
All good questions. Honestly mate I'm happy where I am hey. Positives defiantly out way negatives. As for a different trade, Carpentry has always been the trade for me. I love building shit. I have such a better understanding of construction overall.
I wish I had been a carpenter
you reckon its too late mate?
Im 10 seconds into your video and I had to pause it really quick to ask, do you or do you have someone edit your video? The reason Im asking is the music in all these types of videos are just terrible, jazz on a Tuesday night coffee shop, type terrible and Im curious as to who makes the music and who chooses it and why? I understand it may be cheap to purchase this stuff, but man. Sorry, Im just a sour musician who is 40 and trying to become a carpenter myself. I think I should go back to playing and recording music.
HAHAHA. That was long ago and very much in the learning. But yer might have been something I found online. Honestly can not remember. Sorry it wasnt to your liking. I'm just a Chippy 😁
Shoulda been a sparky apprentice mate....
Nah, never mate. I'd get bored shitless with that sort of work. Plus, not enough tools needed for it.
@@midlifecarpentry yeah, we are all different..
I'm 48. Is it crazy to think I should have a crack at a building/carpentry apprenticeship?
Anything is possible mate. Just gotta find the opportunity.
I love your videos, thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and experience. I’ve been in the police for over 8 years, 7 years in NZ & 1 year remote in the NT. Applying for a carpentry trade has been on my heart for a long time now so just trying to pray and plan on what I should do next as I’ve got a very young family and will be quite a change. Thanks again for sharing your journey.
Glad you like them. It has been a journey.
Brilliant, thanks so much for those measurements, well done! The load length and distance between the wheel arches was critical info me me, cheers.
No worries mate.
how height did you make your platform to suit your drop saw?
Ill do a little short on this topic if you like. From memory around 500mm.
Mine is a different brand but a single thickness of the ruler is 5mm and when doubled it's 10mm 👍
Heaps handy hey. Love the ruler.
