    I made this for my first antenna build. Thank you for the concept. I have to say it does seem to have a directional aspect to it and I have no clue about gain is it seams to have a little more reach to the north when pointed north compared to a 6db gain omnidirectional antenna I bought. Slight tilt maybe 5-10 degrees helps as well.

    I have made the change of speaker for the recommended Visaton FSR-7, I have been able to eliminate the metal part by hitting a nut with washer with cyanoacrylate in the 4 points necessary (2 to the left and 2 to the right of the front). The 2 screws below are placed before closing the enclosure. The sound has changed substantially for good. Greetings.

    Excellent video and instructions and these antennas are awesome so easy and fun to make. Easy to tune as well. Between 1.1 and 1.3 to one in the 2 meter band . That's better than some name brand antennas.

  • @ea77hj
    @ea77hj Месяц назад

    I have another new idea. You can suppress the metal part simply by hitting Cyanoacrylate a nut with washer to each of the plastic tabs of the front rack. Thus you can hold it with its original screws. This is what I will do as soon as I receive the speaker I have purchased (Visaton FSR 7).

  • @ea77hj
    @ea77hj Месяц назад

    Thanks for the video and the experiment. Well, the problem that I appreciate is that this speaker has filtered frequencies from at least 700 Hz. and this prevents it from acting as a true exterior speaker. Frequencies between 100Hz. and 700 Hz. they will not be benefited by the quality of that speaker. Another solution is to connect a self -amplified speaker to the headphones connection. There the range is total.

    I've been using a Yaesu SP-10 speaker. It matches up with the 710 very nicely. I think it sounds and looks better than the included SP-40. With the AESS function, when using a different speaker, the phase needs to be checked to make sure the two speakers don't cancel each other.

    I'm a licensed ham and do not really participate in citizens band other than leveraging it for propagation via software defined receivers. There's one more thing I can say that citizens band operators absolutely dominate us hams on. That is that they get on the air regardless of conditions. We hams tend to be super quiet and not out there shaking the bands up. Meanwhile 10 looks closed on the spectrum display. Hop down 1 MHz and it's wall-to-wall spikes. Cb guys are some of the greatest hobbyists out there.

    I have 3 questions. First, would there be a problem building this out of bare copper wire, rather than insulated? Second, rather than solder the feed wire to the antenna, would there be a problem connecting it with a set screw type barrel lug, that would allow you to move the feed point up & down easily to find the 50 ohm sweet spot? Third, is there an easy way to measure the 50 ohms impedance with common tools? I'm assuming that a common hand held multi meter is only going to measure resistance & not reactance.

    • @ricksshop
      @ricksshop Месяц назад

      Bare copper wire would work, but would require longer lengths due to velocity factor. The set screw lugs are a great idea. Correct on the multimeter. Higher end radios might have an SWR meter, but the nanoVNA is the cheapest way to measure antenna impedance.

    I purchased one of these carbs to try out the annular boosters on my '66 Mustang. After a year of messing with it, like all of these videos showed and adding a phenolic spacer, I decided to go back to my trusty Holley 1850. Heat soak was NEVER an issue with the Holley, with no spacer. Much like an Edelbrock carb, I think the problem with the Summits is that the aluminum body and integrated float bowls transfer too much heat. With the a Holley there are a couple thermal brakes in the form of gaskets between the body and the metering block and the between the bowl and the metering block. My Summit went on eBay and the Holley is back on the car. The car dying in traffic made the Summit dangerous.

    Thank you Rick! Great information about this old but very functional antenna. Just bought 40,20,17, and super 15 coils today from my local CB/commercial radio shop. They did not have a mast though. I have a 2005 F-150, where would you mount these? NMO mount on top or stake pocket drivers side or my aluminum toolbox? I’m looking for ideas: first though I have is 22” mast on top of my truck where the NMO is with spring. That is contrary to the antenna current theory, so I’m not liking it. Next idea, stake pocket with a 90° mirror mount with 54” mast, spring on bottom, QD on top, with the resonator on top of that(probably the best plan). Third idea, use same as second idea just mounted on the back of the truck toolbox. It is aluminum so I would put a piece of Steel on the inside to beef up the metal. 4th idea, mount in my 2” receiver with 3/8-24 lug, with the same spring, 54” solid mast, QD, then resonator on top. I would love to see CBers DIYing their antennas. There are lots of overpriced garbage antennas out there, you'd be surprised how effective 6.5m of wire and a homemade 49:1 can be. You can buy a $200 antron, or drop $10 and an hour of your time on something that works better anyway. Also directional antennas you can build yourself as well. I've never tried building a yagi for anything bigger than 2m, but the tape measure abomination I made worked very well.
