In Dharma talks, Joko explicitly cited Hubert Benoit's book "The Supreme Doctrine" as the most important influence on her own practice and teaching. Benoit's book is technically very difficult. But students familiar with it will recognize Joko's fundamental emphasis on sitting still and experiencing bodily sensation: "The Icy Couch" Dharma Talk by Charlotte Joko Beck AS WE SIT, THE ENDLESS SPIN...

Hi does anyone here know what the aneagram is? Joko talks about this at 15:40
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enneagram_of_Personality
Theres something about her... This is my third time watching this video.
Thank you for this channel that I found today...a treasure!🙏♥️
🙏🪷
Amazing! But as an audio professional by trade, I wish the original audio was digitized again. It’s so sad that the A/D converters were not synced or were malfunctioning. The content here is beautiful regardless.
Did she say "waste of time"?
But do we need to ask why we can not be with ourselves in this moment ? What/who is it we are trying to escape from ?
Great teacher, way ahead of her time!
My connection with god is as weak as is quality of this recording:D I'm just joking, still thankful for uploading this.
Thank you ...
Thank you. Just what I needed today.
GRACIAS JOKO!
Thank you!
She is one of the most brilliant and underrated meditation teachers I have ever listened to. I discovered her on Waking Up but came to youtube for more of her content. Thank you for posting!
Me too! I was so impressed from the talk of Walking up.
Me too, impressive alriggt
Thank you!
thank you
thank you very much for sharing this
"It's almost unknowable." She gets right to the heart of the matter in the first sentences she speaks. Awakening is just about impossible to explain or describe. We are so convinced that we're separate "selves". Trouble is, there isn't any "self" in your head at all. I'm just a beginner but even beginners can see a faint outline of a path.
When I was participating in the Qwan Um school of Soto Zen in early 90's and going to college in So Cal, I had a wonderful guru/ordained Buddhist priest. His name is Bill Cooper and his teachings were influenced by Joko Beck whom he studied under. He would welcome us into his house with great hospitality. Bless both Joko and Bill. Much respect. Mark

I've never been able to reconcile absolute truth with ethics. Why are ethics still important in Buddhism if everything just "is" and judgements are just related to ego?
Well, consider bridge, for example. (1) You don't _have_ to play bridge -- that's sort of an _absolute_ truth. (2) But if you _do_ play, then there are rules you (your ego) has to play by -- that's a _relative_ truth. A lot of Zen seems to be about learning to discern which of (1) or (2) applies in any given moment . . .
There may be no good and bad, but there is joy and pain. I believe that ethics is a wordy rationalization of how to behave so as not to cause joy and pain. I want to bring joy, generally, to those I love. But sometimes I have to cause pain, such as when I scold my daughter for misbehaving. But when we hold up the mold of "am I being a good person" against our life, we are trying to make our limitless selves fit into a mold. We can hold up the mold of ethics as a way of predicting whether our behaviors will cause pain or joy in the long run. But to think that you can discern whether you are a good person based on your actions, or who you are, then you get lost in striving instead of being. At least that's my attempt to answer.
I decided to pause and answer her question. What I want is to not go to auditions and not get work as a result. haha! I said it. I know that that's all it is too. Getting work from auditions isn't suddenly "IT" but it's laughable that part of me apparently thinks it is. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing you.❤🙏
I love the talks. It's wonderful that they are available. I only wish I could audibly hear the questions better since the questions are really important.
I just found the transcript button so now I "hear" the questions.
She was my teacher . This brought back memories.
Thanks for sharing Joko's work, as always. This is a great introduction and clear distillation of her stripped-down, personal application of Zen.
Down to earth, no pretence and no ego, what an inspiration, thanks Joko
Thank you so much for posting
Thank you for uploading these. I was just thinking about Joko.
The same❤
Joko was my teacher for many years at ZCSD. Thank you for posting these. She is missed.
Thank you for dropping all these new Gems. Joko Beck is my favorite contemporary Zen teacher.

Your work is awesome..thank you
Did she say Buji Zen?
"Buji-zen is a Zen Buddhist term that means "all is well Zen" or "nothing to do Zen". It also refers to unwarranted self-confidence, or the belief that one is the universal buddha-nature . . ."
Thank you for posting this.
Amazing!
Thank you
Awesome
@@jokobeckzen thanks for sharing these...it is as if we were with her...
An interesting question: if you move your attention . . . is that no longer "sitting still" (?)
This talk has the same theme as Attention Means Attention in Nothing Special . 🍍
Thank you very much for sharing these precious recordings. Though I never met Joko Beck, she is the fundamental lead on my path.
11.20 " As a nation we're slowly going downhill because we're geared only to looking for what ❓ Immediate obvious comfort ." The Decade of Greed ( 1980s ) just made her heart and mind stronger and clearer . All of these bodhisattvas observe and speak with utmost clarity ❤ 😮
I found her teaching at the right time, exactly today.
Thank you for uploading charlotte’s work, she “humanizes” the experience. May she RIP
29:35 "Non-crazy is to be in touch with reality." That's very good, this non-crazy is what I translate the Pali word appamada. Mada means madness, appamada is non-madness. Sadhu.
If you are not thinking about yourself, you are experiencing. 🙏💯 18:25
. . . although, strictly speaking, you could also experience yourself . . . thinking.
Joko Beck Zen yes but we know that selfless experience is different than selfish experience.
...it seems so but it isn't in Reality.
Thank you so much for posting this. I was a student with Joko as well as her previous dharma relations. This is a very apt representation of that time.
She was my teacher. Miss her
wonderful
Beautiful and simple xx thank you for helping.
