Scott Cooksey - Modern and Traditional Fly Tying
Добавлен 5 сен 2013
A Channel for Fly Tyers and Fly Fishers, demonstrating Modern, Traditional and Innovative Fly Patterns for Brown Trout, Grayling, Rainbow Trout, Salmonid Hybrids, Salmon, Sea Trout and Coarse Fish such as Carp and Pike. There might be the odd Saltwater Pattern thrown in too. You should find useful patterns that simply catch fish. Some of the patterns are unique to this channel as I write. I try to demonstrate alternative ways to tie some patterns with a "Make do and Mend" type philosophy for those with limited materials or for beginners who are just starting out.
I also do the odd Product Review and Fly Tying/Fishing Hacks, Tips and Tricks such as how to build your own Fly Tying Tool set from easily aqcuired inexpensive items.
I'm hoping to film some fishing sessions but need a camera man.
I'm an all round Angler with 35 years experience fishing in general and 25 years as a Game Angler, holding a degree in Marine and Freshwater Biology from Prifysgol Cymru Aberystwyth.

Bloody Butcher
The Bloody Butcher is a variation of a Traditional Wet Fly used to fish for both Brown Trout and Sea Trout (Salmo trutta). The Bloody Butcher is a common and effective variation of the Butcher Wet Fly. The main difference being the colour of the hackle. In the original it is Black, whereas in this version it is Red.
"The fly was originally called Moon’s Fly after a butcher called Moon whose favorite pattern it was. Developed by John Jewhurst the fly was newly named by William Blacker in around 1838 as per Moon’s profession arguably as a marketing gimmick."

Balmoral

In this video I will be demonstrating how to roughly tie a Balmoral Salmon Fly using a video by Davie McPhail as reference. Link below: ruclips.net/video/-D8N8pFhjT4/видео.html I am not the most experienced Salmon Fly Tyer or Salmon Fisherman in any sense and his video is a much better demonstration but we all have to learn somewhere. I didn't originally intend to tie Salmon Flies on this chann...
How to make your own Dubbing
Просмотров 26214 часов назад
A Fly Tying Hack that will allow the beginner Fly Tyer to quickly and cheaply increase their Inventory of Fly Tying Dubbings or add colours that are hard to obtain. Also for the Fly Tyers that prefer to use 100% synthetic materials in their inventories for ethical reasons this is a good example of how to go towards achieving that objective. This method can also be used to blend your own fur or ...
Ace of Spades

A Traditional Lure Pattern originally tied by David Collyer in the early 1970s. It appears Google and several other sources have the date as the 1960's and it is incorrect. Below is a quote from the original tyers son, Steve Collyer on the FlyFishing.co.uk forum that better explains the patterns origins. "Hello. I can shed some light on the background to this lure. The fly was created by my fat...
Cats Whisker Cormorant

The Cats Whisker Cormorant is a modern Mini or Competiton Lure originally tied by Lindsay Simpson (See Link Below) to act as an attractor pattern on the top dropper of a team of flies. According to the original tyer, this allows the fish to come over and have a look at the other patterns further down the cast. I can see this method working well on Commercial Trout Fisheries that have a few "sur...
How to make your own Strike Indicator
Просмотров 31628 дней назад
A Fly Fishing Hack that demonstrates how to make a fixed Strike Indicator for use with Nymphs. The actual body of the indicator could be made from far more suitable materials, such as Foam Cylinders used to make Booby Eyes as an example, but I am using what I have in the drawer here, as it were. The main disadvantage with the design is the depth cannot easily be adjusted, but it does cast very ...
How to make your own Dubbing Brush

A Fly Tying Hack Video on how to build your own Dubbing Brush. The design is based on Davie McPhails version as seen in his many videos. I needed quite a fine brush so a lolly stick was a bit big for my needs. One day I was sat in Greggs where they literally give away some nice pieces of wood in the shape of Stirrers, Spoons and Forks and a light bulb came on. A quick walk around a shop that se...
How to make your own Dubbing Needle

A quick Fly Tying Hack Video demonstrating how to make a Dubbing Needle where the needle can be made quickly and cheaply and have quite a few replacement needles in reserve if required. It utilizes a Craft Knife Handle and a typical Sowing Needle. My Total Costs: Craft Knife: £2.50 Pack of Various Sowing Needles: £1.50 Total: £4.00 I already own the same knife, so I was buying the knife just fo...
French Partridge and Orange Spider

This is an interpretation of the Traditional Wet Fly known as the Partridge and Orange Spider. It is not strictly the traditional pattern due to a few differences I have been forced to make in the pattern. I will tie the original when my full English Partridge Skin arrives. The main difference is obvious by the title. I have acquired some feathers from a French Partridge that was given to me af...
Palomino Midge

A Modern Nymph Pattern that utilizes Micro-Chenille, in this case 1mm, and the detached body tying method to create a realistic imitation of the Midge Pupae, known to Biologists as the Chironomid or to Anglers as the Buzzer. I picked this pattern up in a new book that was bought for me for Christmas 2024 called "The Fly Tying Bible" by Peter Gathercole. I have several books by this author and t...
Daddy Long Legs Lure

A Modern Lure Pattern utilizing synthetic rubber materials similar to or the same as FlexiFloss and Painted or Gold Beads for sinking weight. Another example of a material you could use to tie the legs is a light Pole Fishing Elastic. In this example I'm using a discontinued product from Lureflash called "Life Like Rubber Legs", that is still available to order if you are quick, from Glasgow An...
Black and Red Holographic UV Buzzer

A Modern Nymph Pattern utilizing UV Resins and Holographic Tinsels. This fly is tied to closely resemble a natural Black Chironomid (Non-Biting Midge) Larvae with the Red Hologaphic Tinsel representing the space between segments that has a high haemoglobin content. This allows the insect to live in the poorly oxygenated water and silt at the bottom of deep lakes. Despite being tied as a Carp Fl...
Snowbee Fly Mate Standard Pedestal Vice Review

Rating 4.5 out of 5. This video is only one of two videos on RUclips (as I write in Dec 2024) reviewing this vice, which is in my opinion an under-rated and overlooked vice by the Fly Tying community. I have to admit, I also overlooked it when shopping for my last vice. I want to make it clear that this vice has been bought using my own funds. It is not a paid product placement. It has not been...
Foam Dog Kibble

Heres a Modern Artificial Bait for Fly Fishing for Carp (Cyprinus carpio). This pattern involves no tying thread, just Foam, Superglue and Paint to represent a morsel of Dog Kibble. To be precise a morsel of "Harringtons Rich in Turkey with Veg", but the pattern should work whatever you use, so long as it floats. My journey into Fly Fishing for Carp started in 2010 at a fishery in Gowerton, Swa...
Black Magic

The Black Magic is a Traditional Wet Fly tied in the Northern Spider Style. It is primarily tied to represent anything small, black and unidentifiable such as Midges, Mosquitos and small Terrestrials. When the going is tough and the fish are pre-occupied with tiny black things, this fly may mean the difference between a blank day and your limit, sort of like magic! My reference material for thi...
