Come let us sing the matchless worth (tune: Pembroke) - arr. for piano by Peter Duckworth
We used to sing this one, unaccompanied, in the Gospel Hall at Burnham Market. As a Welsh tune, with fine passing harmonies, it was eminently suited for this. Although I had my issues with the Brethren, I do believe that on some of these occasions the risen Jesus walked among us and we felt the touch of his presence.
The song itself is older, based on a hymn by Samuel Medley (1738-99), who was converted under the ministry of Isaac Watts and ended up as a Baptist pastor with a large congregation in Liverpool. The original is even more ecstatic and personal, beginning with the line "O could I speak the matchless worth ... I'd soar and touch the heavenly strings, and vie with Gabriel while h...

Jesus comes - the heavens adoring (Advent hymn) - arr. for piano by Peter Duckworth

I like this hymn by Godfrey Thring (1823-1903), an Anglican clergyman, for the way it combines the coming of Christ in the Incarnation, his coming to us in resurrection life, and his final Second Coming, with befitting humility and adoration. Thring, from Somerset, came from a distinguished family of Parliamentarians and educators. After attending Shrewsbury School and Balliol College, Oxford, ...

Thanks so much for your reply. Our pastor Rev Jonatas Bragatto would love to meet you. I'm not sure how to get in touch as I wasn't able to use Linkedin. Our chapel is on the google map, but if I give any more contact details, then RUclips doesn't accept it. Our pastor has many videos ln RUclips; one is especially about the decline of Christianity in England, and another featuring this chapel, founded in 1835. The preaching of John Cennick in 1735 resulted in the formation of many preaching house, before our chapel was built in 1835. So our invitation is genuine. I know this hymn is not Scripture, but it comes as close as anything I have encountered to being Scripture because it is rooted so firmly in it. It has been part of my life from childhood. I still have my 'Believer's Hymnbook' with this hymn in it, and I play it regularly (but not as well as you).

Bless you brother. This was one of the very finest hymns to come out of the Brethren, in my view, and I'm glad you're keeping it alive in memory. It may not be direct quotes from Scripture, but it's replete with truths found in Hebrews, Colossians and elsewhere. It is also excellent poetry in its own right.

Hi! Andrew Loose here, researching how people play the tune RIMINGTON - as written or as I know it sung. The point of interest is at the end of line 1: is the note (an F) 2 or 4 beats? It is written in my book as 2 but is usually sung with 4 beats I think. You play the notes with 4……It just occurs to me that the the tune was composed by one F Duckworth. Any relation from the past? I am doing something about Isaac Watts (born 350 years ago in July 17th 1774 in a service I am conducting this Sunday morning. I am pleased you have that great verse about more blessings than their father lost! Tremendous to think on that.

Hello Andrew, I meant to reply to this but not sure I did. Francis Duckworth is, I believe, a distant relative. He lived in Rimington, near Clitheroe, Lancs, a part of the world my father was keen on exploring in walks. Perhaps he felt a kindred spirit?
