To help prevent it next time, you might want to try sealing your canvas with a clear acrylic spray or applying a layer of clear resin first. This will create a nice barrier and stop the resin from soaking in. Alternatively, using an MDF board, wooden canvas, or any panel that's had 2-3 layers of gesso applied can work wonders too!
