Painting videos is the general idea - demos, maybe the odd interview. The set up is very basic and the camera slightly shaky, you don't need to tell me (really).

Now We Are Six

A quick and slightly shaky tour of Now We Are Six, an exhibition I took part in at the Islington Arts Factory with Simon Davis, Anastasia Pollard, Suzon Lagarde, Inma Garcia-Carrasco, and Andrew Hitchcock. This was a wonderful experience in a great venue, with catering by GS Wines. (A couple of paintings get swallowed up in the transitions between clips I’ve assembled here - apologies for Andre...

Raw and burnt umber
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.3 года назад
15-minute video of a self-portrait study using only raw umber, burnt umber, and titanium white. The focus is on value (tone) and colour temperature, the perceived warmth or coolness of the pigments. It’s a bit technical, probably not for total beginners... some colour theory is probably needed. I’ll try harder next time at making these inclusive for all experience levels. Anyway, I hope you enj...
Did you size the paper first?
@@carolinacrane1 no, but I’m keeping the oil paint thick so it doesn’t bleed. If you can drain it a bit first on some newspaper that probably helps.
Ohhh. I was genuinely surprised when you pulled out the pallete knife! Love the end result from this, James.
Surprised because I suppose I don't read descriptions very well
@@taylorweaver7486I liked it better before the knife but I’m glad it was surprising.
Ooo fun! I want a go!
That was fun and interesting. Thanks!
Why did you choose to use titanium white instead of lead white? I'm a student and I'd love to know.
Выразительный портрет!
Im not scared of him as long as I had my robot.
speed illustration stylez!!!
New Sub. Here👍👍
Amazing video, I like so much😍
Amazing portrait, so nice😍😍
Well done! Thanks for providing a fresh and exciting perspective on portrait painting. Great work, indeed!
Just curious..how long did it take to do this masterpiece?
Beautiful and simple! I love these videos! it is so great to see the process!
can you make longer videos please that would be more useful. thank you
Hi Laila. I agree. My internet is slow here. The two longer videos here both took all night to upload. If things change, I'll be happy to add more like that.
Wonderful painting. You're great 👍🤩
Thank you!
Is this oil?
yes, on a primed canvas panel about 30cm x 25cm
@@jamesbland680 thanks, I love it!
More of these videos please James!
This was a very useful exercise to watch, thank you! I appreciate your discussion of temperature and tones. Excellent!
are these all yours?👀✌🏻
i used to wonder that about hardcore techno cds.... like dj's techno, is it all the same guy every band name?!?!?!?
Fantastic video. Thanks mate.
amazing as always! the clue to what you are painting is in the title though..... kinda spoils the mystery :-)
thanks! I’ll think about that… at least I didn’t name the subject of the portrait until it was 90% done.
those glasses are very Barry Crier-esque ? great job
Hi am your student Jacob
Nicely done, James.
Before I even watch this video, I must compliment your mirror setup! For those of us who are slightly dyslexic, the puzzle of place had to be reconciled quickly. What fun! OK, back to the vid ...
That was a fascinating exercise, and your commentary, as you first began to compare temperatures in that very limited palette, drew me in. Later when you said the temperature and value combination was easier to see, I suddenly saw it too. Thank you for doing this.
Great video James! Emily suggested I reach out to you. I'm also teaching a workshop in the winter--first-time teacher and looking for some guidance. For this video--what did you use to secure your phone to its position above your palette & canvas? Need to track something similar down for my own use. Many thanks! -Rebecca N.
So helpful and informative. Thanks James. Learned a great deal about value and highlights in these 20 minutes.
I'd like to see the still life you are painting, now & then
Hi James, a helpful video, thanks. What camera did you use?
Thanks, just my phone through the Instagram app. I could certainly get it better quality, but it takes ages to upload.
@@jamesbland680 thank you. The quality is pretty good I thought!
I love your painting, I’d like to take painting classes with you. I hope that you’ll be my sensei, greetings!
Thank you!
Wonderful video, James
Thanks, Taylor. I've been doing some zoom teaching. There have been a few requests for a palette view alongside the painting, so I tried.
I'm thrilled that you've begun doing these videos. I've been working as a painter for over 40 yrs but am always looking for new inspiration and new ideas, and over the last 2 or 3 years you have been one of those inspirations. It's so nice to see how you actually begin a painting, how you use a brush, etc. And the color temperature experiment is very helpful for me. Thank you and I'm looking forward to more videos!
Thanks! I’m missing my usual face-to-face teaching. Someone suggested I try this. I’m glad it’s inspiring someone!
Exactly.seeing paint applied teaches me so much. Also to have the thought process narrated like this really helps. Perfect tutorial vid.
hey there James, i was thinking about our failed busking attempts (I wont mention how long ago it was!) i actually enjoyed watching you paint this, you really haven`t changed much old friend. Great to see you again! I recognized you instantly
Hey - are you still playing? All the 90s bands are coming back... A pity we never played a song in public.
@@jamesbland680 ha, yes, I`m still trying to play. I must be getting the hang of it by now! And we did almost play a song in public, we just stopped when anyone approached haha
From essentially 2 shades of one colour, you can produce the basis (or even all of) a portrait. I loved watching this process and I need now to try it myself!
It works a lot better if the colours are more spaced out, like burnt umber and viridian, e.g.
I know you are painfully modest - but why not put your credentials on your page. One of the best artists in the country who has exhibited in some really impressive places. Deserves to be seen.
Hi Hedley. Good point about adding some biography.
Really helpful. Thank you James for sharing this.
Thanks Dea. I’ll post another soon.
