Stam SA87i vs vintage Neumann U87. Can you hear the difference?
In this video I am giving you a comparison of the Stam Audio SA87i and the vintage Neumann U87.
The Neumann U87i is one of the finest studio microphones ever made and can be heard on countless hit records. It is a superb vocal microphone but shines on virtually all instruments, and is often considered the industry standard in professional recording studios.
In this video you hear the microphones on vocals, guitar and a simple mix. Enjoy!
The song is called Rolling Steel Wheels Turnin, and is written by Fredrik Löf and Ronnie Rahka.

How I almost bought a vintage Neumann U87

I almost bought a vintage Neumann U87, but instead ended up learning a thing or two about buying vintage microphones. The vintage Neumann U87i microphone is legendary and is known for being a great all around microphone and particularly good for vocals in a busy mix. This microphone changed recording forever and was in fact the first sold state condenser microphone ever made. The Neumann U87 ha...

Comparison of the Stam Audio SA-87i and the Neumann U87 Ai on guitar, vocals and drum overheads. Many say Stam makes the best U87 clone, I have not tested any other ones, but this one is very good. Signal chain: SA87i and Neumann U87 Ai plugged into a Neve 1073 preamp. I sing a caption out of “Before the Woman”, written by Fredrik Löf and Ronnie Rahka. You can find the full song on Spotify or R...

Shooting Star cover on Stam Audio SA87i

I recently got the Stam Audio SA-87i. Here is a first demo. Sorry, I don’t know the lyrics by heart. I plan to post a comparison to Neumann U87 ai in the near future. If I remember correctly the acoustic guitars are recorded using the U87 ai. The Stam SA87i has a lower output and more highs than the U87 ai, but they sound very similar in most applications, although with good gear and sharp ears...
Hi just want to know, how long did it take to came? I just ordered a mic from them but i'm scared of the delay on delivery. Have a good one
Hi, delivery of my mic, from ordering to actually having it, took 7 months. I am not sure of how representative this is of the total population, but mentally you should be prepared to wait for some time. Delivery of my SA2A+ took just two moths, but I think that was very fast.
They are _very_ close! Not exactly the same, I would say the Stam seems to respond a little faster to transients. But they are _clearly_ cut from the same cloth, a very a faithful replica of that original sound! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for your comments. I agree, they sound different, with the Stam being a bit brighter, and more bass on the U87 in figure 8 mode.
i really like your voice really the track was great, artistic and full color you are perfect 🔥❤️
Many thanks!
What brand filter is that
König&Meyer
There are more mids on Stam SA-87i!
Thanks for watching!
I agree - the old one sounds more ”together” whereas the new one sounds a bit generic LDC. Good video - thanx.
Both are great microphones, but the vintage has a bit of magic in it and sounds more natural at the same time. Thanks for watching!
I can hear without professional headphones on the vocals samples that there is a difference in the harmonics and the resonance of the 2 microphones. I find the U87 to be more controlled meaning the vocal takes will be more mix ready. In some other contexts the Stam can be something to be desired therefore is not a bad microphone. Also we need to consider that you can get a new Stam mic for a third of the price of an U87. Cheers!
Good points! They are very different and both have their strengths
Thanks for the video !!! ❤❤ always happy to see these comparison and it sounding so different from the ai’s. I love both mics but since the ai is still being made I went for the darker 1979 u87i I have here
Thanks for making such a great microphone, Josh!
If your vintage U87 basket was never opened yet, maybe send it to Neumann for a service, as the foam piece inside will degrade over time and can contaminate the capsule. The Ai version isn't bad either, as long as it's a relatively old or very recent one - all the circuit versions without the small daughter board inside.
Thanks for the advice!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 i have it, too
Very cool!
Just saw your other video with the vintage one and I would love to hear them back to back!
Thanks! I am actually working on a comparison video. Hopefully I will have it ready within two weeks or so!
I just read that it took 7 months for delivery!? No thanks!
In my case it took that long. I don’t know what can be considered normal when it comes to waiting times when you buy from Stam, but be prepared to wait for a long time! If you are mentally prepared for a year, then you may be positively surprised, my SA2A+ took just 2 months
Right now my lead time is about 4 weeks ❤❤
I remember commenting on your first video haha. I made a full review of my Vintage U87 and I came to the same exact conclusion as you. It is a dark mic while simultaneously being a bright crisp mic. That is just an insane quality of sound to have in a microphone. Congratulations on your purchase man!
Thanks! Insanely cool mic! I alao watched your videos and subscribed to your channel
@@ronniesmusic173 Oh you do?! Thank you so much man, I appreciate it!
hey im about to order the SA-87i can you tell me what the significant differences are?
Hi, the mics are conpletely different. The Stam sounds bigger and is also much brighter. While the Stam is a clone of a vintage U87, it does not sound like the vintage U87, I have one from 1978. The Stam is a spectacular microphone in its own right
I don’t know of its the mic technique, the room or the character of the neve, but the blues demo sounded much better to my ear with the Stam in the home studio!
I think I leaned into the microphone a bit too much on that take, so there is more proximity effect on it. I only did one take on the Stam in the studio (felt happy with it at the time), and so I had to use it. Shows the vocal performance is the most important always!
There is a difference. The Stan is modeled after a vintage (1979) U87. The Neumann U87ai is a bit more hyped in the high end. The Stam, like the vintage Neumann, isn’t as harsh in the high end. If anything, the U87ai sounds a little scooped. Your EQ attempt went in the wrong direction. You pulled down the high end, boosting it would get you closer to the U87ai. Personally, I actually don’t really care for that ai sound. The vintage U87 just sounds better. It’s a more versatile microphone. Not that the U87ai is a “bad” microphone. It’s a very common microphone in studios. Some sources will sound better on it. But for me that hyped high end makes sibilants and clicky mouth noise more of a problem. Again, it’s a personal preference thing. I’m very familiar with Neumann’s U87 and the U87ai as well as the Stam 87i. The Stam is almost identical to the U87 but sounds nothing like the U87ai.
The Stam is significantly brighter than the U87Ai, which has a more pronounced high mid. The U87Ai is not hyped in the high end iin my opinion
The u87ai has a highcut at 17khz and an eq circuit to boost high mids. The vintage u87 doesn't have that and the capsule is polarised with a different voltage so it has more high end.
Very intersting. I just got a vintage U87, and it is indeed a completely different mic than the AI. It is also completely different to the Stam. All are great, but the vintage U87 is magical
@@ronniesmusic173 then you were lucky, i've worked with so many vontage 87s that didn't sound good
If somebody sells one cheap, then you can have Neumann repair it
Maybe the Stam sounds better in acapella mode. But I don't think it cuts through better in a mix than the original U87 Ai. Because the mids of the U87 are much more pronounced than those of the Sa-87. I think the Neumann's mids have something slightly 3-dimensional about them, the mids pop out, even in busy mixes. I don't know if Stam can do that too. However, I know that the mids are the most important for a voice.
I agree, I really like the U87 Ai. But I like both and have found that which one works best depends on the song and the brightness of the other instruments. U87 takes EQ very well so can easily be made a bit brighter if you want to.
I own a Vintage U87 (I have videos with it on my channel) and I had to send it off to Neumann for repair. The previous owner ripped out the XLR connector and I bought it in non-functioning condition for really cheap. Along with re-attaching the connector, the capsule was in such bad shape that cleaning wasn't even an option. They replaced it with a genuine K87 capsule and it functions fully up to spec now. Yes my U87 is still an antique since everything else is still from 1979 like the body, internal circuit, and the original leather case. My advice is to just have Neumann clean or replace the capsule if it needs it. Never ever get a reskinned capsule for the sake of having the original capsule. It will never be the same! Good luck to you man! I'm seeing a lot more poorly conditioned, modded, and reskinned vintage U87s listed on the market lately.
That’s the smart way to do it. If Neumann replaced parts with original spares then you get a perfect result!
Hi Ronnie, just discovered your channel with your videos about Stam Audio's U87i and subscribed. Does the U87i only work with its own power supply or also with phantom power and audio recorders like the Zoom F3? Does it have a normal XLR cable? Greets from Berlin!
Welcome to my channel! Berlin is the home of Neumann who make some of my favourite mics (as you may have noticed)! The Stam SA87i works with phantom power, it does not have its own power supply and also no battery compartment. Normal XLR out
Thanks Ronnie, yes Neumann is in Berlin. I should visit them sometime! I also looked at the SA47 tube, but this one has a big power unit for the tube, that is why I asked about the SA87i phantom power. I also look at Soyuz microphones and I have the Soyuz 1973 entry mic. Have you heard of them?
I haven’t tried Soyuz but I have understood that they make good mics. Tube mics need to warm them up for 30 mins, so I moved over to using the U87 and the SA87i as my main vocal mics. That way I can record straight away when I have a good moment.
They are not going to sound alike because stam audio 87 its going for the u87 vintage sound not the ai that is the modern sound
This is true
Great video!
Thanks!
Ronnie that Neumann U87ai is so thin on your voice its awful, the Stam kills it. I think taking the highs out of the Stam was the wrong call, I think your positioning affected the with the guitar. I say this because with the voice the Stam was not harsh up top like the Neumann U87AI
I really like both microphones. Stam is definitely brighter no matter the exact placement of the mic, and I find it more flattering on vocals. Just out of interest, what equipment are you listening on?
@@ronniesmusic173 senhizer headphones
@@ronniesmusic173 I bet you always use the STAM to record your vocals :) - by the way I like the STAM better on the guitar too, the U87AI is dominated by upper mids.
Actually I used the U87 in a busy mix, the mids help it cut through making it easy to mix. That was before I had the Stam. Had a new session at the studio yesterday so will test which one works best
Now tried the Stam in busy rock song. It is insanely good
The Stam here suits your voice better
I agree, but did not want to say so in the video. On a slightly dark baritone voice like mine, the Stam is better, more open and flattering
@@ronniesmusic173 maybe it would also be beneficial to see how they sit in the mix? Sometimes listening to things in solo doesn’t give you the full picture so it would be great if you put out another video!
Nice idea. I could pop down to the studio and do some recording. I am pretty both mics are awesome in the mix, they work so well with my bright acoustic guitar
@@ronniesmusic173 great also keep it in mind that it’s interesting to see how well they take EQ compression et cetera because this is also a huge determining factor for choosing a microphone Would be great if you could include something like that about your opinion Ideally, people want to hear something raw You could show mixed and raw vocals in a mix
Spent yesterday at the studio, might get some more material for a video from that
I just got mine. It sounds amazing for sure! I was pleasantly surprised to see the new Stam logo
I waited 7 months for mine, and must say it exceeded my expectations. Especially on vocals! And happy it works as a stereo pair for my U87 on overheads
@@ronniesmusic173 oh my.... i waited a month and was impatient, i cant imagine waiting that long but im definitely satisfied now that i have it
