Season 2 concluded with a BANGER. This is within my current top three favorite SIR Rap Battles, and it’s not hard to see why. As a huge Pokémon fan born to Latino parents, I was genuinely excited to see a rap battle with a Pokémon Scarlet/Violet character, and this battle did not disappoint. For a newbie, Jonna-Lynn Alonso excelled her role well, and I honestly don’t mind that she’s rapping in an American accent since a Spanish one isn’t required and that might’ve been too much for a newbie to rap battles to handle. Rap battle veteran yukigloom also delivers a fun performance that greatly complements Jonna-Lynn’s. Before I analyze each verse, I will state that I really like the beat choice. It’s triumphant, celebratory, anthemic, and a perfect fit for a season finale. There also are moments in which the beat is in cooldown mode, which serve their purpose well to build up to the moments of grandiose energy. I also want to mention that the beat sounds similar to the song Crazy In Love, which isn’t a bad thing, it’s just an observation. Nemona begins the battle by bringing up how her fans will cheer for her, which she then juxtaposes with an early Don DeMarco on how Goku isn’t there when his planet needs him. Another good juxtaposition then follows, with Nemona comparing her team of Pokémon to Goku’s team. We already have two amazing disses carried by good internal rhymes schemes. Nemona continues to diss Goku well by bringing up how he was responsible for offing the person who raised him, and then connects this to how as an adult, Goku witnessed villains killing his allies. This section flows amazingly and is greatly complemented by the assonance of short “o” sounds. The beat then becomes triumphant, as Nemona then provides two lesser Donnie’s before yet another hard diss is dropped. The final quarter of this verse begins with another great comparison in which Nemona first brings up how she does well in a Pokémon battle, then follows up with how Goku is/was an absentee father. The verse closes with a reference to Bardock’s last stand, which consisted of the Saiyans’ final stand against Frieza before he demolished them and their planet. Overall, this is a strong start to a rap battle that marks the end of a chapter, and Nemona immediately came for offense. Goku’s first verse then begins, and I want to first point out that the manga visuals and text go from right to left, just like in actual manga. Lyrically, the first thing of note is that Goku brings up Ryme, a Paldean Gym Leader with a rapper motif, and it works since Nemona is part of the Victory Road path, which involves battling Paldea’s Gym Leaders. The next line, to me, is a Don DeMarco, as it can be interpreted as Goku saying “You’re not a true fighter”, with a juxtaposition between Pokémon battles and battles in DB. Not going to lie, the line after is weak. Goku then brings up a pair of disses to Nemona that work, as while Goku may not read the room at times, he at least knows when to treat emotional situations with respect; Nemona isn’t as respectful given her obliviousness to Arven talking about his tragic past in the Way Home path. A juxtaposition involving turtles is then made, and while it’s a loose connection to Nemona, I still think it counts as a Don DeMarco and I appreciate how Capsule Corps was utilized. Goku then does a rhyme combo of promoted/broken/Phoned in/Rotom/flowing/notice/throwing, and it all flows well, with the right syllables of the first six words being stressed in correspondence with one another. And while there were a couple good disses there, the best ones in this verse come from the penultimate couplet: “People drop you like your frame rate? Sheesh, you’ve had a rough time / You’re the type to bug, but your game is more the Bug-type”. The frame rate of S/V and its many infamous glitches on its launch date (at least according to those who made the game out to be a giant mess of glitches) are addressed here, and I really like how the diss was integrated. The last couplet involves Goku telling Nemona that she can do better, which is in character with him, and I honestly appreciate that this aspect is being used, even if I was first informed on this through comments on the full video. Round One scores: Nemona: 12 Don DeMarco’s Goku: 9 Don DeMarco’s In the second round, Nemona provides three Don DeMarco’s, one of them being“Regardless of his heart disease, this papá is a deadbeat”, which especially hits hard after my best friend explained the whole Goku-heart disease thing. I honestly thought this short verse was still well-written, and really liked the incorporation of Spanish words. The only thing I’d do differently would be to have the Spanish words pronounced in the Spanish language. After hearing Nemona’s second verse, Goku tells her that she is dishing out disses more efficiently, which is yet another representation of encouragement. However, he believes he can get to a higher level quicker, which is compared to his teleportation ability. The next line brings up the DB universe Goku is from before the sole diss of this verse is dropped: “When half your character designs are more lifeless than your professor is”. This line is an effective double diss, with the second half referring to how Professor Sada/Turo is dead during the events of Pokémon Scarlet/Violet and the first half implying that certain characters in S/V have somehow more lifeless designs. While I give more credit to the second half, this diss is still effective. Round Two scores: Nemona: 3 Don DeMarco’s Goku: 1 Don DeMarco In the final round, Nemona attempts to nullify the line immediately before this verse. She points out how a professor with a grudge against Goku created “androids” that basically destroyed the future in the timeline Trunks came from. While Professor Sada/Professor Turo did develop a time machine that would lead to Paradox Pokémon escaping the Zero Lab, Area Zero is off-limits to most, the time machine was shut down before it could wreak havoc, was never intended to be a weapon, and was created by someone reputable. Said someone did also pass away during the events of Scarlet/Violet, which was what the previous diss mainly focused on, hence why I think both disses still hit. Then we get a flip on the phrases “face (of) defeat” and “beaming up” for the next couplet. Nemona first uses them to show that even when she’s defeated, she will still smile and accept it, and then juxtaposes this by bringing up how Raditz was only defeated when Goku sacrificed himself and let Piccolo kill both with a beam attack. This second usage of “beaming up” is a triple entendre, as it references the beam attack, the phrase’s definition of teleporting someone/something (in this case, Goku was effectively teleported to the afterlife), and the phrase’s meaning of “to die” (which I already explained). The next couplet talks about the older Dragon Ball films’ canonicity being retconned, which is then linked to Goku’s tail getting cut off. Afterwards, Nemona brings up how Goku basically ditched Gohan into the dangerous wilderness on DB-universe Earth, which has non-avian dinosaurs on it, before ending with “We’d probably have to wait another saga for your next verse”, a great closer that ties into how some of the Dragon Ball Super manga’s arcs have still not yet been added into the anime, and can take a while given how DB creator Akira Toriyama is now dead (and can furthermore be an indirect diss at the creator being dead). In the final verse, Goku goes Super Saiyan Blue, and one thing to note is that I really appreciate the progression of the Goku visuals. For the lyrics, Goku begins by calling Nemona a “little privileged rich kid”, which is fitting given how Nemona is the daughter of someone involved with the Rotom Phone Company, and Arven refers her as a “pampered little princess from a rich family”. Additionally, around that same part of the game, Nemona brings up how her parents allowed her to do what she wanted, which ties into the usage of “privileged”. The diss is used in which Goku brings up that these “advantages” would not allow Nemona to witness the scenario of villains killing innocent lives and do something about that to make things right. He then juxtaposes how the two were motivated to become more powerful: Goku witnessing the death of his friend Krillin motivated him into an more powerful form, while Nemona becomes stronger by battling other trainers, some of which might be children who don’t want to battle her. Goku then goes Ultra Instinct and further disses Nemona for how battling trainers to no end is unintelligent and inconsiderate. The next line is likely a reference to the Academy Ace Tournament; the idea of which was Nemona’s. Goku brings up that the tournament involves both students and staff of the Naranja/Uva Academy and thus considers it “a match full of misfits”. Goku’s finishing couplet is solid, as he brings up that Nemona should leave up-and-coming trainers alone, similar to how Nemona’s parents did just that to her, which can lead to potentially life-threatening consequences for Nemona as well as possible lack of care from them, which is honestly a nice diss to close things off with. Round Three scores: Nemona: 5 Don DeMarco’s Goku: 5 Don DeMarco’s Overall score: Nemona: 20 Don DeMarco’s Goku: 15 Don DeMarco’s Ultimately, the winner of this battle is Nemona, but I greatly enjoy both performances, appreciate both sides’ disses, and the references to both series. To summarize, this battle was phenomenal! As this series evolves, I become more invested in it, and with Season 3’s premiere having been out since this was uploaded, I look forward to the rest of that season’s future offerings.
