A Love for Steam2.mp4

This video is a tribute to the SP745 and her crew. I shot and edited A Love For Steam with the help of the members of the Louisiana Steam Train Association. They ran the SP745 to Baton Rouge, LA one beautiful sunny days in 2008 and I chased with my camera, later catching the interviews with some of the integral members. These folks are dedicated to keeping this Southern Pacific steam engine ali...
Anyone acutally diagnosis this issue yet? I know the video is old but I have 08 3.0 doing this for about a year after the engine swap. I have replaced everything still doing it. Now I have all converters and complete new exhuast shipped to be installed. When I remove the cat manifolds on bank 2 (firewall side) I saw 3 nuts were finger loose and a nut and stud completely missing. Could tell it was making oil marks on the side of the head where it was leaking.i had oil leaks everywhere, timing cover gasket and guides replaced, oil pan gasket , water pump and seal leaking bad and replaced. Valve cover gaskets, PVC, purge, EGR and line. Had compression test done. Smoke test done. Fixed all vacuum leaks. This car has so many issuss. Was p0430 p0174, used forscan for chart readings i got 02 sensors fault readings. So will replace as well. IAC valve was reading fault. I change the IAC ran it and still heard it. But now waiting to install this new exhuast and see if solves my issues. Car runs so rough at idle but smooth driving. Has like a lounge feeling letting off and on when giving it gas. Will check bacj once I complete the new exhuast and redo the chart readings.
Did anything ever fix this issue? Mine making noise exactly
Please help I have a 2018 Chevy Cruz rs Lt and it just started to happen I put 4 qts oil it had over heated because I was low but I did not drive it that far only to auto zone I had to get a new MAF sensor after I put the sensor in that’s when it started to do that what do I do ??? I’m loosing my mind it runs fine just don’t know where to start I don’t have a lot of money to be replacing all of the parts I just wanna know what it is so I can fix it 😢

Most of the time is that the valves are not sitting properly because they have carbon or they just worn-out and every time that the piston goes into compression the compression escapes or leaks back into the intake. To fix that you need a valve job or if it's too bad replace the head.
Interesting, . . . .
Solution? I've replaced all plugs and coils
Have a 07 3.0 doing the same thing even after injector and new coil pack
I had one so this 2006, after finished replacing intake gaskets, valve cover gaskets, plugs, and cleaning tb. It was on cold start but resolved after warmed up. I’m still not sure of the cause other than maybe adjusting fuel trims after repair. Ram only slightly rich -5/-6 both banks. No issues stated after that from customer. I’ll update if I hear anything back.
Not only is this a great steam locomotive video, but a great music video as well!
Roger thanks so much! It was so much fun to shoot and edit. I'd love to do it again now14 years later. The old engine is still around
Replace the (fuel injector) IDLE CONTROL VALVE! Cleaning it will not help…
Changed weak battery. Popcorn noise started at air intake plenum. Intermittent miss on cyl. three. check engine light did not come on until enough misses occurred. Remove and replace upper intake manifold. remove and check spark plugs. all six OK. Checked coils. All six show continuity resistance. move cylinder 3 plug to cyl. 4 and coil 3 to 6 position for easy access. This tests both the COP coil function and the spark plug function from cyl. 3 the original code. Reassemble everything and clear codes. Test run engine and now cylinder #6 has the miss so I replaced COP coil on cyl. 6 and car runs normal,no codes and NO popcorn noise from intake.
Intake valves are cracked..
must not have read that they someone had a top end rebuild done and it still occures.
What was it
Everyone is going to think I am crazy but this is true, had this sound on my 2005 Ford Escape, changed everything Coils, spark plugs, CO2 sensors, gaskets, everything that could possibly fix this problem from research and suggestions, Break Booster was hissing at me in my SUV, changed it and it fixed the problem
FIXED: my 08 escape had exactly the same problem. After a while i finally got a check engine light. Cylinder 2 misfire. Changed the coil pack, spark plug, and injector. Make sure you replace plenum gaskets. Runs like a champ again. No more noise from the air filter box.
Sounds pretty cool
I have the same problem in my 2005 Ford Escape with a V6. The check engine light is NOT on and there are no codes. I replaced the PCV valve, EGR valve, and the air filter. I cleaned the MAF sensor and idle air control valve. I replaced a couple of brittle vacuum hoses. The problem is still there. The spark plugs were replaced 1.5 years ago but I'm going to replace them again and, for the first time, I'm also going to replace the ignition coils too. Hopefully that will fix it.
I replaced the spark plugs, ignition coils, and upper and lower intake gaskets. Problem is still there. The idle is fine, its just that noise that is the problem.
@@timvillasana7583 hey tim so I'm having the same issue, have been for a while. I changed about everything you have, still have the sound. I started wondering about the exhaust, and maybe if the cata converter is clogged? What are your thoughts and have you fixed the issue? I was always thinking about changing my valve cover gasket because I have a small amount of oil getting into one of my spark plugs
@@djflex6923 I have the oil leaking problem too so I replaced the oil pan gasket (twice!) and it is still leaking - but that's another issue. To get to the oil pan though I had to remove the exhaust pipe that runs under it. When I did that, I looked into the catalytic converters (there is one in the front (behind the radiator) and the one that feeds into the muffler). They both had the honeycomb shapes which, because they weren't crumbled, tells me they're okay, but that doesn't mean they're still working properly. Rock Auto has the front cat cost at about $300-$400. I might buy it next month - it looks like a DIY only requiring removing the bolts, replacing the cat, and bolting it back on. The back cat is cheaper (about $100) but it looks like it requires welding. I did replace the fuel pump too. The sound is still there. So, I'm battling three problems: that sound at the air intake, leaking oil that drips onto the exhaust causing the smell, and a stutter when shifting between 4th to 5th gear (40-60 mph) and also while going up an incline.
@@timvillasana7583 best of luck to you man, if you replace the cat and have any luck please let me know. I've been trying to solve the popcorn noise in my air intake for the last 2 years now. The truck runs well, but that noise is loud when idling and I believe there's some hesitation when giving it gas. I've seen a few people recommend changing the fuel injectors. I thought for a while it might be a misfire but after changing the plugs and packs I still get no misfire codes and runs the same. Also when the popcorn noise is going off I notice my exhaust releases according to the sound that's why I was curious about the cat being clogged and getting back pressure, idk lol
That happened to mine and i put a cold air intakr from autozone and it stopped
Did your engine light come on?
@@clayconnell9714 no it didnt
@@yourpointis2043 I'm not that car repair savvy but can you explain the process of putting cold air intake and where? thanks
@@timvillasana7583yeah of course, its basically a replacement for your current air filter but it will require some work not to much look up how to remove the air filter & after that what i did was just put the aftermarket air filter which was a k&n. I hope this helps a bit
Dose anyone know if injectors fixed this problem ?
plugs n coils
I had this problem on my 08 with 100k miles turns out cylinder #6 was low at 70psi other cylinders 150 psi. The last thing I expected was low psi. EDIT: I just looked into the engine with a borescope last weekend and 1 of the exhaust valves was cracked but appeared to have been like that for awhile getting worse over time as it looked like it had been slowly eroded away. maybe it was a factory defect and I just never noticed until it started making this sound?
how did you fix the low psi on cylinder 6?
@@timvillasana7583 I replaced the engine with a known good compression engine. Not the best way to go but it was the best way for my case and situation
@Joe Black I have photos of it somewhere. I believe it started as a hairline crack and eventually turned into a chip/chunk of valve missing. I was really surprised given the mileage 100k and I bought it at 34k. I am one of those crazy routine matinace people
@Joe Black yes please do your own research my experience may differ from yours. I never heard that noise the whole time I owned the car until a few months before I discovered it was a bad valve.
Your PCV valve replace and buy the cleaning injectors add to the tank and fully add gas in the tank remember 1 /18 or 22 parts gasoline that fix your problems
First I would clean the PVC valve.
So I seen a reply from Barry ,it just says "Idle Air Control valve" so was that the problem?
Wish someone could figure this out, going on a couple years now
@@djflex6923 Dirty IAC valve,, Unplug it while running. If it stops. Take it off and clean it. Clean the throttle body too..
I have an 05 Escape that began making this same noise at the same time the check engine light came on and was flashing, along with the battery light coming on intermittently. I took it to the auto parts store to get the codes, and got three codes, P0302, P0316, and P0622. I took off the intake plenum to get to the #2 plug expecting to find a defective coil only to find the spark plug well full of oil due the valve cover gasket failing and fouling out the plug. Fortunately the valve cover gaskets were under warranty from the previous replacement, so I had them replaced along with all of the plugs, and the oil soaked plug boots on the back side of the engine, as well as the pcv valve since it was full of oil as well. After the gaskets, spark plugs and boots were replaced, the shop said the misfire had cleared up. But the engine still makes this same noise from the video. I'm wondering if running some Seafoam cleaner through the engine if it might clear up the issue, it's been awhile since the last time i did so. None of the lights have come back on, only runs rough at idle, acceleration and makes this same noise. I welcome any thoughts. Thanks.
Thanks for the input. My mechanic said I'm having an issue with cylinder #4, otherwise everything else ok. Runs rough at idle. I can't remember exactly when this noise popped up. I've had the truck about 4.5 years. The bigger deal is I've had to replace the damn computer twice! Nobody can tell me if it was the PCM that went bad or a coil that went bad and killed the PCM. It's apparently a well known issue with this model
Joe Black thanks for the advice on the copper. That makes sense. I have a misfire on number four I think, but I just replaced all coils and spark plugs. Still same situation. Mechanic says it’s the cylinder and would be a major issue to fix that. I think I can hang with it as it is. The noise has stayed thru two computers, replaced plugs, coils and pcv etc. crazy...
Having the same issue, replaced sparkplugs, Iac valve, pcv valve, maf sensor and still having the issue. Did you guys have any luck finding the problem? I'm really leaning towards a bad injector because not only is mine making popcorn noise but my idle is pretty rough as well
@@djflex6923 I am having the same popping noise ,replaced coils plugs the same. Was it your injectors ?
@@snowblind5151 I never changed the injectors, truck is still running little off and popping noise. A few people have told me its probably an exhaust problem like the catalytic converters are clogged and the engine is backfiring some. I'm not sure though I wish I could figure it out lol like I said it's been running slightly off for a while now
What was wrong with the car? I happen to have the same issue.
I still have the noise. With this many peopl ehaving the same issue, it must be a "feature"... Thanks Ford
did u ever figure out ur problem?
I have 2005 mercury mariner 195000 miles coil code 4 lit up same problem popcorn noise from the air cleaner Coil was fine I started doing the stuff they say in the internet The cheap fix would of been take it to ford BUT I did the upper and lower in take fuel rail iac maf then said f it took it to ford the guy put it on the computer and said the ecu is bad they wanted $1200. You can order one on line with your vin and it is flashed and ready to go I went to Pepboys for $350 they had one on the shelf ford flashed it and their total bill was $250 car works great now
Top Dog thanks for the tip. I’ve gotten all sorts of ideas tried a few. Still popping popcorn. Lol. My kid says it has a heartbeat. I had a bad coil that killed the computer. Yep do your research and get it on the net. Dealer wanted 1300+. Sent the computer and key to Circuit Board Medics. $300 sent it back ready to plug and play. There’s a RUclips video for that! I was able to change out my plugs and coils fairly easily - not a mechanic at all. $100 for the set on Amazon. Still got the heartbeat though, but runs better.
So U pepboys installed it and towed it to ford to reprogram ?
Barry Vedros you ever figure this out I had coil #3 go bad it said replaced it check engine went off and now it’s making that noise
I had the same issue on a 2005 Mercury Mariner 3.0L. I was getting a P0354 error code on cylinder 4. Changed all the coils, plugs, cleaned IAC, still no change. I did a noid test on the wire connected to the #4 COP which showed no pulse (blinking light). Tested the #5 & #6 wire, good pulse. I bought a PCM from the yard and and had it programed, problem fixed. Fried coil pack driver on the PCM.
For me, this was caused by a bad coil pack.... luckily it was cylinder 6, which is right in the front. Running great for a week now.
I am having the same exact problem with my 2007 Ford Escape and it's misfiring so what should I do? I have had all new coils, spark plugs and intake gasket and nothing seemed to solve it so what shall I do?
I had same problem in my 2006 Ford Escape, i tried changing all coils, all spark plugs, cleaning IAC, cleaning EGR, the ONLY thing that worked was reprogramming PCM. Now works perfect.
Thanks Oscar. I'll go through the IAC and EGR again. I've had that noise for a while. Earlier this year, I had a coil go bad (I think) and fried the PCM. I sent the PCM out to get fixed, replaced all the plugs and coils, cleaned the EGR while replacing the all that stuff. Don't remember if I cleaned the IAC when doing all that.
Barry, did doing all of those fix "thump" issue?
Nope, it's still thumping away... And it's weird too, not a normal cadence. I just saw the post from Sixpack666666 (sorry I didn't see it sooner!) that said replacing the injector did the trick. I don't know if I'm up for trying that, but I'll see if there's a RUclips video for it. LOL
@@BarryVedrosDid you ever solve the thumping/popping noise Barry?
@@happywrenching33 never did 🙄 I sold the truck several years ago
Just had one of these yesterday, changed the IAC, no difference, hooked up my code reader showed misfire on cyl 4, swapped coil and plug from cyl 6 and cleared codes, code for misfire on #4 came back on, did a compression test on #4 showed good at 150 psi, only other thing is either bad wiring harness or bad injector, wiring harness looked and tested fine, pulled upper plenum off and changed #4 injector, problem solved. Injectors are on a common rail in a V configuration, bit of a pain in the ass to remove and get lined up but overall it only took an hour or so to do. Just make sure you blow all the crap out of the injector cups before removing them, and when you put a new injector in and bolt the injector rail down, turn on the ignition to build fuel pressure to check for leaks before replacing upper plenum.
Thanks a bunch. I'm sorry I didn't see your post sooner. RUclips flagged it as possible spam and filed it way. This is the most promising solution I've seen yet, after searching all over. I'll have to see if I'm up to changing out an injector. I'm an amateur for sure.
Im having the drum noise aswell i have a aftermarket short ram intake. The sound isnt as bad as rhos bit it seemed to be coming from the filter itself. Im changing the Idle Air Control valve first to see if that clears it up. If not not sure what my next step would be i just did a motor swap..dont wanna rip it apart, but I will if needed.
Pulled my air filter off sounded just like yours this video confirmed it, thanks for posting this before I dumped new plugs ,new coils, i was getting a misfire in #5 same gulping sound changed #5injector problem solved. Thanks
Hey man, did you ever figure it out? I'm having this issue
Hasn't been figured out yet. Mine has the same problem. Sounds like a valve.
Just had one yesterday, bad injector.
Still thumping away.... Hmmm bad injector? I'll have to check that out.
Barry Vedros did you ever figure this out I had a code for #3 coil changed it and still having misfire and that noise gonna change plug and injectors hopefully it’s not the pcm
Thats not the answer I was hoping for, but thank you for the response.
Same here...
Did anyone figure this out? Having the same problem with a Mercury Mariner
Still no idea... and no solid answers.
Anyone same problem now
Used to be a member of LASTA until my membership expired. Never got the chance to renew it.
Same thing happens to my escape, check coils and spark plugs
I jut changed the coils and plugs and got the PCM repaired - hopefully not related to this. Either a coil went bad or the PCM and truck died. Replaced those things and it runs pretty smooth, still ave this weird noise though. Stumped...
@@BarryVedros Idle Air Control valve
Intake valves they get cracked and compression escapes through the intake
@@BarryVedros you have a cracked or chipped valve. Not something people wanna hear we look at videos hope its the sensors, or IAC and so forth but one or couple of those vales are causing that issue. It’s very common with these Escapes. Means you’ll have to pull that had off and that shit sucks.
It's a misfire
what's the problem i have the same thing going on with mine
My brother and I used to play on that engine when it was on static display in Audubon Park back in the late 50's and 60's. Great to see that it didn't go to the scrapyard.
What is the name of the song at the end?
Bill Johnson's "Ghosts Along the Lines
+trainmaxx thanks!
So that's what happened to the engine that was in Audubon Park. I wondered what had happened to it. Wasn't there also another engine being kept there? A smaller one? Could have been in the 70s or 80s when I saw it.
Can't wait to see 745 at steam fest
In every which way, the 745 is one fine Southern lady and I can't wait to see her out and about soon!
You may wish to add the tags "railroad" and "railway," as well as, "steam locomotive" to generate the viewers such a work deservers. Although the name is the Louisiana Steam Train Association, "steam train" isn't a common term. Unless someone was specifically looking for LASTA like I was, they wouldn't know about it. I stumbled over it searching for another video. And it is those who don't know of LASTA are the ones who need to see it. Thanks.
Great work. Great editing job. It flows well, is not boring, and is interlaced. Now it is much easier to show people how I spend time on Saturdays. Among our other numerous projects including our State Bicentennial Tour, we are moving our yard. While there are numerous videos of trains, maybe someone can document the building of a rail yard. Maybe time lapse photography? Two operating railroad cranes. Lewis
