    How are you finding that gortex jacket while wearing a pack? I opted to not buy shakedry because I read that its quite fragile and the rubbing of the backpack straps would ruin the goretex and allow wetting out.

    • @quakingleaf

      I’ve had no problems. It hasn’t had a huge amount of use, but it’s held up fine to a thruhike and a couple more seasons.

    Thanks to your review I bought the Dipole 2 li and used it for all but one of my backpacking trips this year. I too LOVE this tent! Really the best pole, 2 person tent out there IMO. So much floor space and vertical wall space. The "windows" are a home run for the views and ventilation. I have no problem using this tent just for myself, even though it is massive, it is still under 2 lbs. Incredibly solid using the 4 stakes, and a breeze to setup once you figure out how to square the stakes first. Using 8 stakes makes it more bomb proof than most other ultralight tents out there. Tarptent definitely leads the way in innovation.

    I love that tent, and the single version. However, I disagree that the vestibules are big. I found them to be far smaller than any of my other tents. I also didn't like that the ends have little dyneema string that the rain will drip down. I had water in my tent on both single and double version. I'll probably put a rubber gasket around them at some point. Even, with the vestibule size, and the string issue, I do agree. They're my favorite tents I've owned.

    • @quakingleaf
      @quakingleaf Месяц назад

      I’ve never had the string drip issue with the windows closed. And fair enough on the vestibules- they are good sized for an ultralight tent, but not as bid as some others. Thanks!

    I’ve been thinking of picking one of these for a long time, but I like the Stratosphere (?) for its larger space, and if I’m not mistaken it can come with a colder weather inner. I usually hammock camp, but am finding it a bit of a pain when it’s getting near zero. I can’t afford the Li version though. I only occasionally need something to carry any big distance btw. More just a short hike from the car, but I’d like something I could if I needed it.

  • @z0uLess
    @z0uLess 5 месяцев назад

    That is very very light, and expensive! Hope you didnt suffer too much with sleeping pad holes, brittle hiking poles snapping or lack of rain protection. One thing I have noticed with the ultralight backpacking movement is that people dont seem to put any attention into lowering the weight of their smartphones or electronics in general. I have an old smartphone which is 135 grams / 4.76 ounces and this does the job when I put it on airplane mode -- the battery lasts for a long time (especially when I am out in the woods to get away from electronics and use it very rarely). The iphone 13 is 204 g / 7.195 ounces. I also have that lightweight flashlight, but I dont really think you need it if you use the daylight properly and the light from your smartphone in emergencies. Heck, your eyes even adjust to the darkness if you dont flare them up with artificial light all the time. I guess, to each their own, but my backpacking philosophy is to get away from all the complicated things.

      Yeah, it's not for everyone. But the durability and weight can make it worth it after lots of miles. Cool thing is that Tarptent has many models that are half the cost and also very durable, with only a moderate weight penalty.

    10:14 did you notice any extra wind getting through the upper part of the foot/head windows? I have the DW and besides the weights savings being able to open from the inside looks like another advantage. It opens more too but just want to make sure wind, in addition the rain as you mentioned, stays out.

I can't see myself cold soaking for months on end. However it it works for you then great! I am hiking in 24 we share some gear. I went to a zero degree quilt from enlightened equipment and have a bit more insulation in my pad. I know you went in 23 and interested in how your comfort level during sleep.

      Sounds good- hike the way you like. 👍🏼 I was very comfy at night. A 10deg quilt was a bit warm sometimes, but great in chilly nights (I’m a cold sleeper). The Uberlite pad in long/wide was very comfy. I slept well the whole trip. I didn’t switch to traditional weights for San Jacinto- I only added an ace, crampons, and a stove for a few days, then switched back. I had a very different kit for the Sierra, where we hiked and slept in snow the whole time. If you want to see changes I made, I have a 1200 mile gear check-in video. Have an incredible hike!

    • @quakingleaf
      @quakingleaf 11 месяцев назад

      My base weight was 10 pounds for most of the trip. I used an xterm for San Jacinto and the Sierra only. My xterm (regular) is 3.5 oz more than my Uberlite (large), so 10lb 3.5oz if one were to make that change. I only did this when I knew I would be camping on snow.

    If you KNOW you have been in poison oak, any good decreasing detergent and a wash rag will remove it and you have a few hours to get it off before it starts to soak into the skin. But many of use are immune to it (at least for the first few contacts)
