Hey Iceman, I think you saved me in my H111 last night 😂. Anyway, what do you recommend to reduce edge shimmer, I have a 4090 card and a quest 3
Turn down the highlight setting in your open XR tool kit where is 0% is maximum and 100 is off.
how did you open that XR toolkit in the game? When i do it i get openxr toolkit for WMR .. no clue
Make sure both the game and if you're using steam are installed on the same Drive along with the XR toolkit
@@davidwaVR yeah I got it to work, Not sure what makes FSR better than supersampling or in game resolution settings? I put mine on 80, but not sure what I should have the ingame resolution on. I usually supersample to 130-140. I put it on 100 and the FSR on 80 and the game looked very blurry on this headset.
@Guinea54 I don't use FSR. Not many do. 90 fps is what I use on the meta 3. I up sample in the meta 1.4x and I don't use the override in the tool kit. 20% sharpening due to the oversampling on the meta software system
I can’t get IL-2 to appear listed in the OpenXR toolkit. The game is crashing everything I boot it up via OpenComposite. What am I missing ?
I can’t get this to work at all. Every time I install open composite it causes my game to crash on launch.
CAS is really good - even at low settings - and you can adjust in flight without having to start over. I find 30-40% is perfect. I also turn off all AA and all other 'sharpening' to save some cycles.

Iceman, any comparision comments between the G2 and Q3 from your experience in IL2? pros / cons. Thanks.
After having the meta Quest 3 for more than 5 months I can say that the overall satisfaction and performance made it worth every penny nothing wrong with the HP Reverb G2 it's just older technology and the screens on The Meta Quest 3 are phenomenal giving you a much cleaner and larger sweet spot
@@davidwaVRlong time IL2 VR player, around 1200hr flying with Rift, rift S, Quest 2, Reverb G2 and now Quest 3. I think the G2 has better spotting at range.. But agree that the pancake lenses make the cockpit and close in stuff a treat to look at. I'll keep flying the G2 till it's dead and then move to the Q3 full time.
Hi Iceman. I wondered if you have issues with slightly jagged base of clouds? I along with a fellow wingman have noticed this issue. I run very similar settings to yourself except I don't use the tool kit, I use the debug tool and I also use Open composite to reduce CPU usage of Steam VR which I find helps. Ref setup, Quest 3, Gigabyte 4080 and 5800x3D. Thanks in advance. Thorn-Sphere. 🫡
If I see people lagging like that, I just go the other way.. even if you shoot them down they usually just warp into you and kill both. Maybe next IL-2 game won't have these issues.

Appreciate it! I still have the Reverb G2 but I can use my son's Quest 3 to test it out.
2 words that say Virtual Desktop, On Steam has done wonders to my Quest 2, I have not got a Crazy powerful set up, An i5 12600k and a 12gb 3060, I think the 12g of vRam is the 3060's saving grace, I also put 32gb of Ram, That made a massive difference in the Sim Racing on AMS2, I can now race a full track with no crazy stuttering and horrible game play, As long as I get 60fps with Sim Racing I am good, I gets around 72-80 with my Quest 2, VR is nothing short of amazing, And 3 years after you done this video, VR is now awakening everything from Education, Health, And Gaming, I actually loves the fact that kids can now learn anything they want using a VR headset, I would of loved what tech the kids got, lol, I had a Spectrum 48k, I did get a Playstation when they first come out, I was one of the first kids in my street that had a Playstation, Was buzzing coming home to see a playstation, So I can only imagine what the kids think of a Sim Rig and VR, With the PC power there is now, It is a bit scary how fast PC's have become more powerful, The 50 series GPU can make a robot work, lol, I used to pay pound coins to play Arcade Racing games, All for 3 goes lol, And now if you can afford it you can have a playseat that can house the steering wheel and joystick, If someone said to me when I was in my teens that I will be able to wear a headset letting me feel like I just stepped into my TV, And a Sim rig in my room, Allowing me to race people all over the planet at the same time, I would of laughed, lol, But the remember all the ads in the 80s saying in the 2020s there would be motorways in the skies, With flying cars, lol, Do you think we will ever see so called motorways in the sky though, lol.... Still though it is spooky how fast PC gaming has become how PC gaming has become, Some games it is hard to tell what is not a game and what is a game, I seen comments saying they thought it was real, lol, I heard the new Batman for the Quest 3 is meant to be bad ass, I can't play the shoot em games with gore in because I suffer with CPTSD, But this WW2 game is a bit different, It is why I Sim race to help with the CPTSD, I get bad Anxiety and Sim Racing can help when I get bad Anxiety, But Sim racing no cure though, Brings me on to why I got nothing but respect fir the dudes who fought during WW2, Suffering CPTSD from violence from the streets so to speak, I can't even imagine what seeing a Family member or friends head getting blown off next to you would do to a brain that is already fried from war, So yeah I had to get this game just for the reason of honoring what these brave people done during WW2 , These planes are not easy to fly properly while a bunch of planes is firing at you, lol, I am going to look if the Battle Of Britain is in IL-2, But yeah I will jump back on IL-2 later, It is a fantastic WW2 plane game, Fair play to the team who put this game together, I will be on this game more, And I am a Sim Racing nerd...lol Yeah if you not tried the Virtual Desktop app on Steam, Try it, It helped my VR a lot, Huge difference on AMS 2when I started using Virtual Desktop, It is all I use for VR now, So it have done something right....
Make sure you check out my later videos after this one because a lot of things changed in 3 years
@@davidwaVR lol, It sure have, When I started Sim Racing I started with a PS4, I wish I never though, lol, I got a PSVR and thought what a piece of poop, Dirt Rally and Ace Combat was the only games I played on PSVR, But after trying the the Quest 2 on my PC, I can say that VR is going to only get better so to speak, You can even play on some CDJ Decks in VR, Brilliant, But yeah I will check out some of your vids, I will be stepping onto IL-2 tomorrow to do some dog fight missions, This WW2 game is a brilliant game, Oh yeah do you know if you can use the Oculus Controllers to on this game, Don't get me wrong the Mouse isn't that bad, Just would be more to detail if you could use the Quest 2 controller as a flight stick, Or can it even be done, I have a Logitech steering wheel, I bet there is a way of getting the Logitech steering wheel as the joystick, Climbing and diving controlled by the gear paddles, lol, But yeah this game is a top WW2 game for sure.... Will check some of your recent vids tomoz when I got an hour spare, Happy VR'ing yeah, Peace................
and finally, where to access that IPD adjustment??
What / where is the startup.cfg file? Is that an IL2 file somewhere? And is there an earlier video that explains what and why to change this? Thanks!
So, just to be clear.... these are settings for playing IL2 in VR, right? I couldn't quite tell what you said at beginning about "on your monitor..". Thank you!
Great vid and tips! Any recommendations to reduce city texture pop in as well as horizon flicker in VR? Also, for me dots appear at dark flickers on the sky until closure renders an airframe. Wondering if any way to reduce flicker and more show as dots as close to as seen in pancake view.
You can turn down Highlight In the control panel for openxr toolkit

Hi David/Iceman. Your videos are a god send for us IL2 users using VR. How can I contact you to share my PC setting etc? Thanks, Neil
Not using a G2 but instead a Pimax 8K-X with Pimax-XR (Open Composite). Running really well on a 5800X-3D 7900XT combo at pitool ss setting of 0.80 One thing I have noticed, clarity aside is my right eye is much sharper than similar settings under SteamVR. With SteamVR one has to keep its SS settings at 100 or it blurs the image like no tomorrow. Nice though using OpenXR instead as it is one less thing to go through to run VR and with good results. I am a little confused though with FSR settings not allowing over 100% so no upscaling as I understand it. Instead drive the input higher and then downscale. Not sure about that.🤔 Anyway Il2 VR is great.👍
What do you think brought the performance gain at 22:30? The Upscaling?
did you just try all the nvidia settings or where did you get those? How do you know what the settings are really doing and if they are affecting IL-2 in VR?

These settings have been game changing! I was about to give up after a month of fiddling with settings and not being satisfied with image quality, but wow! Although image quality is superb, I’m having a few problems: - Everything looks really small, especially planes and it’s almost if I was zoomed out - I’m seeing double, especially when pulling up the toolkit menu - I’m having a sensation as if I were looking through a fishbowl lens My system is 4090 / 13900k and Quest 3 I’m a bit confused on all the different places where I can set resolution and wonder if this is the cause. Below is what I have: - Oculus Graphics Preferences (HMD settings): 1.0x / 3712 x 1984 - startup detail_rt_res = 3250 - startup or_height = 3250 - startup or_width = 3501 - startup full_height = 1440 - startup ful_width = 2560 - OpenXR Toolkit = display resolution (per eye) = 3250 x 3501 - world scale = 100% Any idea what may be causing the double vision and other issues I’m having? Thanks so much!
Hey OG! I just got into VR with IL2. Absolutely love it, so much better. Any new updates on tuning VR settings for spotting, resolution? Thanks for the videos
Very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to create this. Invaluable to someone getting deeper into VR and IL2
Thanks for this video. Couldn’t get 3090 to drive headset. I had the display res incorrect.
Can you use VR neck saver with this ? Thanks
Great Vid. But how to enable OpenXR under IL-2? When I launch it it start SteamVR...
It depends on if you are a steam-based VR system or a windows-based VR system but you use opencomposite app. For some reason it was dropped from the openxr toolkit website I don't know why. But that's how everyone updates their open composite and switches between Steam and windows base VR systems
@@davidwaVR Pimax Crystal. So I think I have to install open composite to switch from Steam VR to OpenXR. Thank You.
@OG Iceman VR Love your videos, they have helped me so much get the most out of my headset! Unfortunately since Oculus update V59 I have found Opencomposite no longer works for IL2. Anyone else had this issue?
Would you recommend FSR with a slight downsample + these settings for a 4070ti, or should i watch any of you older vids were you use FSR?
Hey man, I had recently put together a monster build (7950x, 4090, 32Gb DDR5 6000, pimax crystal) and tried running IL2 straight outta steam VR on max settings. Flabbergasted would be an understatement when I got an 8FPS slideshow. Your video helped me set it right and now I’m running a smooth 120fps last night AND the game still looks amazing. Appreciate it!
Sitting at 89fps on IL2 with a lot of air traffic. Thanks for the great vid. Reverb G2 on a 3080Ti is doing well.
Hello OG Iceman VR, thanks for your video! I have a HP Reverb G1 and I always played with steam VR in IL-2GB. I'd like to know if can I shift to Open XR with my headsets. Many thanks. Ciao!
Is MSAA set to =0 on purpose? You still have multisampling set to =2
Thank you so much for this! Noz only il2 become smooth with these nvidia settings, but all vr games benefit much from it! I can play vtol vr with godlike mode at last! Cheers! ✌️😎
Shadows at 0 is 100% and 100% is 0 .. same with Vibrance and highlights. But the last two are not as obvious on all maps. Where shadows are very obvious
I've downloaded everything, gone through the setups, but i can't get the game to launch in VR unless i'm using Steam VR. When I use the desktop icon for Il2, it opens but not in VR. I know i'm missing some crucial and obvious piece, but I cannot get this to work on my system: I-7 with 4060ti. My frame rates stay at 72FPS but drop to an unusable 35FPS when i get into heavy combat...like Normandy beachhead. I really want to figure this out.
Do you need to make sure that il-2 is showing up with the blue check mark in openxr toolkit. If that's not the case renewal man you only have to install the open composite file. I go over this in an earlier video. And that traditionally happens if the game is installed on a drive other than the drive your OS is installed. And you haven't directed it correctly. And finally make sure you turn off steam VR if you're not using a steam VR headset in the steam settings and you also disable steam VR in your mixed reality headset with the windows mixed reality app
@@davidwaVR Hi, thanks for the response. This is a new computer for me. I got it to enhance il-2 specifically. Since this is a new computer, I redownloaded the game from steam. It downloaded to whatever drive it suggested. I thought it was a no-no to have games on the same drive as the OS...(?). But perhaps this is the problem... If so, I'm wondering why it doesn't happen to everyone? I-l2 shows up in the XR toolkit and it has a checkmark. I use a Quest 2 headset so I don't use the mixed reality app, but the occulus app.
I don't think it affects everybody because it might have something to do with administrative settings on your system. But it was a very common problem I would say one in 50 people especially when they we're trying to break away from Steam now I will warn you when are the side effects of buying il2 on Steam is it's a pain in the ass in fact I wouldn't recommend buying the game on Steam if you could at all help it. Steam is more like a virus for il-2 it makes it very difficult to do what you want with your own game. Now if you could launch the game without having the Steam app running and have access to all your airplanes that'd be great but because they want to keep the bloatware on your computer and run it like AOL or Facebook it ruins the game and you end up having to buy the entire game stand-alone in order to do what you want to do or continue banging your head against the wall and figuring out how to work it around. Now on the other hand I have heard you can go into the steam settings and turn off all the VR options that should stop Steam from launching for people who don't want it. Now if you run the steam application for your headset then you're good to go you are good to go and you can still use the toolkit. But that would be true if you bought the game stand-alone and again don't buy it from Steam it's not worth it
@@davidwaVR Oh my gosh, I never even thought about bypassing steam altogether. Great suggestion. Would it behoove me to uninstall the steam version before buying il-2 directly from the il-2 site? And one more question--If I buy everything through the store, does that mean I don't need the Open Composite and the toolkit in the first place, since the whole point was to bypass steam VR?
@OG Iceman. Im getting a DLL Error coming up when launching the game and freezes. Im using Varjo Aero with IL2. I can for a second bring up the OpenXr in VR menu but then the DLL Error comes up and freezes all. Not sure how to get around it? Pls can anyone help
There is special information on the open XR website that you can check out about the Varjo. The most common issue for that error on all other headsets was the open composite dll did not make it into the game. And manually dropping the dll into the game file seem to fix it if the website information doesn't work.
Thanks so much for that. Im a bit of a newbie when it comes to these file movements...would you mind walking me through what and how I would action this? Really appreciate it :) @@davidwaVR

OK, I am very down with the world scale tip, I am pretty down with the high contrast adjustment tip (still looking for magic spotting settings) but I have to question whether cranking the IPD to get some image flattening has any real benefit and wonder if it might not cause some serious eye strain. I tried it for a while and came away with blurry vision and feeling dizzy. I was also experiencing double vision in the game game at extreme settings (past -20). Most of the flattening effect seemed to be on the cockpit and airframe and did not seem to affect scenery or targets, for me anyway. YMMV, I know... still really appreciate all your experimentation and sharing.
This is great new info! Just a question.. I have a quest 3 and in game the oculus link performance says app res - 4896 X 2640 Encoder res - 4032 X 2240 at 90Hz The quest 3 has a 2064 x 2208 pixels per eye but raised to 4864 X 2592 (and I'm not sure how this math works per eye or not) What would you recommend using in the detail_rt_res and or hight in the startup config? What about for the desplay resolution overide? Also my cpu seems to show its bound in certain situations yet its proformance is only at 27%? is this due to the games single thread use? Thanks, these numbers aren't making sense to me due to the oculus app multiplier. Update- This really made everything look so amazing, everything pops for sure. I have 30-50% overhead but if I fly over ships or activity the cpu snaps to bounded. I guess this is just an IL2 map thing? How was the test map for you on Sunday for FTC? Did you have much lag over these areas? Still not sure about what the above settings should be and it seems to change them on me. detail_rt_res seems to hold but it adjusts hight on me after running the game.
What display render resolution (per eye )do you set in XR toolkit for Q3?
sorry I didnt 'see this. thanks for the response, I think I've got it down now.@@tomcatvrkalisz820
Admitting my ignorance here, but HOW did you get to the startup file at "14:59 IL2 Startup File setup: with edit"? I´m drawing a blank trying to locate it in the files. I am also struggling with getting into the OpenXR Toolbox. It worked great the first time, then have not been able to Cntrl-F2 into it since (well, ONCE among scores of restarts, but then it was gone again.) Trying to get things smooth with the new Oculus Quest 3. Win11, msi Trident X2, i913900K, RTX4090. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for sharing your insights. Appreciate.
Thanks!
And by the way when I say the game crashes because I wasn't using my headset and it fell asleep
How do you get openxr toolkit to show CPU and GPU headroom?
In your advance settings under the menu you must make sure the expert settings is turned on last tab of the toolkit after that you should build to see all those options that I showed it's default is off
I figured it out. I didn’t have the target frame rate set. I just upgraded from a 5600x to a 5800x3d but I am still CPU bottlenecked and haven’t really noticed any performance gains. I can hold a steady 90 frames in small dog fights and both CPU and GPU show around 35% headroom but if I’m over a city or near bombers my frames drop, I get bad stuttering and it shows I’m CPU limited. I really thought the 5800x3d would help more with this. My graphics card is a rx6900xt. Is it even worth upgrading my GPU or will I still be CPU bound?
@@TheRiddleOfSteel007 @TheRiddleOfSteel007 your video card is about comparable to a 3080, I know with my 3080 I have definitely solo performance increase when I was overclocking the card which really isn't the traditional overclocking when using MSI afterburner I also had to use FSR, but more than likely it sounds like you're trying to use msaa versus fsaa. Using a lower setting on sharpening helps. But honestly if you can afford to buy at least a 4080 which aren't too bad right now on prices I would get one when Black Friday sales hit because you're probably going to see the best prices on any video card. I had only owned my 3080 for less than a year before I upgraded because of the video card shortage issue. I luckily paid the same price for my 4080 as I did for my 3080😂 but I am very happy I did. A warning to anyone upgrading to a 4080 or 4090 you will need a very large case that is well cooled, I think the best of the 4090 are the liquid cool version if you can get one, and the size of this card is no joke. I could barely fit a 4080 in my case and I had measured everything and had to get a special power adapter which I did not want to get the 4090 because of the fire issue. But it is important that you get a case that will fit it.🤣 luckily I already had a thousand watt power supply
Currently I’m running fsaa but I tried turning aa off with balanced graphics in game setting and 70% res in toolkit and still suffered stuttering in congested areas. I went as far as trying to run the g2 at 60hz but again would still run into scenarios where it would stutter. So currently I’m 90hz, high in game settings, everything turned down or off except shadows, fsaa x4 and 80% res in toolkit with fsr. I was thinking about getting a rx7900xtx(I know Nvdia is better but I can’t justify the price to performance difference compared to AMD) when they go on sale but I’m just worried it won’t get rid of the frame drops and stuttering in those congested areas.
Oh and also AMD cards don’t have the shitty 12 pin burn your house down connector is why I’m looking at the rx7900xtx
