DearThomas! Some months ago, I wrote a letter to you, compliment for your playing and doing. You answered and I was enjoyed. Now we have the Bruckner year and celebrate it. Anton Bruckner 1824 - 1896 All his Compositions for the Church were ordert. His Symphonies came from his own interrest, his soul. Let me tell you a story.. In 1945 the Musicians from the Münchner Philharmonik were free for the war.. But at the end they all got the order to go to the front. The last fight of crazy Hitler.... Now. The Conductor Kurt Eichhorn conducted the 7. Symphonie of Anton Bruckner. The last time with this Orchestra, who knows, who is coming back... A special Situation... Bruckne was more than a Composer walking to the boardes. Formaly.. Nearly to 12 Ton... He was very spirituall. Coming from Schubert and Beethoven and BACH... St. Florian, where he lives, and where he is barried under the Organ in this church, is my home... I am from there.... At last: In your interpretation of WTC, I feel well. Great Compliment again.... (Don`t forget Louis Armstrong and Oscar Peterson and all of them, they had a big heart..) Best wishes from Austria. Klaus Melem
Dear Klaus, thank you for your wonderful message, and I am truly happy that you are still enjoying these WTC interpretations. So you are from St. Florian? What a wonderful city and Monastery. I hope to visit sometime in the future. Thank you again and all the best to you! Thomas
Incredible, Congratulations and thank you!
Thank you for your truly kind words! All the best! Thomas
I would be forever in your debt if you played Die Kunst Der Fuge.
Thank you - this is deeply encouraging to me! I do have the project of recording it, not too far away in the future. I truly appreciate. All the best! Thomas
I have previously expressed my admiration for this interpretation, and I don't need to repeat myself. But I have a question for you, Mr. Schwan, regarding Bach's conception of the term "well tempered", which must refer to some tuning slightly different from equal temperament. So what do you think of Bradley Lehman's interpretation of the convolutions on the title page of the manuscript of Book I as being a guide to the tuning to be used?
Thank you for your kind message! Personally, I think the Lehman discovery is genius. The way each convolution in the scribble precisely describes the way to tune each interval cannot be a coincidence (or, if it is, it is a miraculous occurrence). There is an ongoing debate on whether the scribble should be interpreted upside down (as Lehman did) or as it appears on the page, but that is a matter of interpretation. Peter Watchorn's fantastic recordings on the harpsichord and Penny Crawford's on the fortepiano for the label Musica Omnia have been realized with the Bach-Lehman temperament and sound incredible - I truly recommend these to get an idea. In the case of my performance here, it is simply in equal temperament and A=440 (not easy to ask for alternative tunings on modern pianos...)
Incredibly beautiful performance. Reminds me of Evelyn Crochet's recording in its simplicity and clarity. Great to have a new performance to listen to!
Truly grateful for your incredible words - I'm humbled! Thank you for listening. And yes, I also think Crochet's is a fantastic interpretation. All the best, with blessings! Thomas
I'll bet he plays guitar as well and pretty good 😮😊❤.

Hard to believe all the empty seats....The room, however, is filled with millions of unseen guests! What a sensitive, delicate, introspective, sweet, elegant interpretation of WTC. Lovely, calms and smooths out the soul. Thank you so much, Thomas. You are a portal of heavenly sound.

Bach once said, "I was obliged to be industrious. Whoever is equally industrious will succeed equally well". These perfomances of WTC I-II show like no other that he was right :) it would be great to hear The Art of Fugue and ricercari from the Musical Offering played to such perfection.
Thank you for your truly wonderful words! Indeed, I am planning to perform these works not too far in the future. All the best! Thomas

Very good Played, a great Video and Sound
Thank you for your kind words and for listening! All the best, Thomas
Thomas, amazing as always. This is my favorite piece currently in my mind of all time. Maybe because I have listened to it from so many other performers. You play this so very well really, just wow. But I have to say, every time, I hear someone play this song, I hear so many new things, and I feel I am actually starting to hear Chopin thinking. I'm sorry to pivot to Chopin now but he is so talented and takes us all on an incredible harmonic journey I am amazed. You again, show us these things. Power, then softness, then technical prowess, then quiet arpeggios...it is all so much emotion if you think about it. Isn't it just like LIFE? The ups and down, the pain, then happiness, hardness, softness, intermediate....the journey. Your technical prowess on the piano is on another level from your peers.
Thank you for your truly kind words! And also for your truly wonderful description of the artistic and human vitality of Chopin's music... All the best to you! Thomas
Excellent and wonderful!! And impressive beyond words from the perspective of an amateur Bach player.
Truly grateful for your wonderful words. I am happy this performance resonates with you! All the best, with blessings, Thomas

@@ThomasSchwan Thank You for Your response!
Everything is big in Texas? Everything except the audience for this sublime music played by a consummate artist..Mr. Schwan. If I could clone myself I would occupy every vacant seat and enjoy Bach so much more! What a performance indeed.
Thank you for listening and for your truly kind words! I am happy this interpretation resonates with you. The concert was in a university hall and just mildly advertised - no radio announcements, social media campaigns, ads management, or anything like that. So this relatively small audience is more valuable to me than what would be a large but anonymous crowd in a "big" event, as it is a genuine expression of an existing community... Just expanding a bit on this, as this is often commented upon. Thank you again, with blessings! Thomas

Dude you are so good at Bach, 852 prelude and fugue was especially amazing, best interpretation I've listened to. How long have you been playing? Any advice for people brand new to learning keyboard? Listening to you, Schiff and Glenn Gould has really made me want to get good.
Thank you for your truly kind words - I am very happy that this is of inspiration to you! And I feel humbled to be listed next to these great household names. Personally, I started playing as a child (8 years old) but I know people who started much later, even in their twenties - and became absolutely great players. There is really no limit! The only humble advice I can give, as simple as it sounds (and not only for beginners, but at all stages): always cultivate a lot of passion and a good deal of daily discipline, working on small steps each day. Know exactly what you want to achieve or perfect with each step in your practice (clarity of intentions). And above all, always keep it about love and the pure joy of creativity! All the best to you and thanks again!! Thomas
I admire your playing. It is peaceful to hear the warm and beautiful sound.
Thank you for listening! I'm happy this interpretation resonates with you. All the best! Thomas
