Lovely to see all your stuff here on YT now❤
I left Meta last week. Finally. Time to spread some old videos in pandemic low res. The duos with you are my favorite!
@ I saw your departure, and I feel exactly the same. Hat’s off for doing it. Meta is and have been nothing but a cesspool, and I am glad Suckerberg showed his true colors, even if most people won’t do anything differently. I also like our collab a lot. I hope we get to play together sometime. 😀👍
@@lofileifI just bought some new studio equipment (including a brand new schertler mixer) and I could imagine a great 16 track xenakis/ligeti style orgy with lots of hakens from my side and great stuff from you...
@@jojena_immYeah, I have heard/seen your Haken stuff. Brilliant! I am very jelous. ☺️
@@lofileifI've seen your atmospheres video. this belongs to the TRUE multitrack midi-guitar adventures! "there is something dead in there" for breakfast.
Incredible
Great! From that vague beginning, these repetitions generate the right forward movement (like that narrowing perspective from the photo).
Loved this lecture! Subscribed & will listen
A very nice piece and great visuals in the video. It's a shame it ends so quickly! Werner Herzog should commission you to create music for his film. The bluesy lick in the middle is surprising...
🙏 for the feedback. just some smartphone pics from a winter walk yesterday. the grey sky was stunning against the glooming white trees. did you check henry kaiser's music for herzog's film? p.s.: yeah, thats another 50€ into the david gilmore penalty blues licks cash box (there is this story of how allen was so good in mimicing all the british rock/blues guitarists, friends virtually fell out of the sky, but of course he NEVER did it in his own music for aesthetic rigor).
I watched "Encounters at the End of the World," but I don't remember the music from the film very well. I need to refresh my memory of that recording. In my comment, I also meant to say that some of your more ambient tracks can evoke similar feelings to those old Popol Vuh soundtracks.
@@jojena_imm It is very interesting film music, and there is a wide stylistic range among the pieces that make it up, but everything somehow connects well together, perhaps because the pieces at the beginning and the end are so good. From a track like 'Platelet Ice,' it's not far to some of your pieces, so maybe Herzog should consider your candidacy next time.
@@BM_24 thanks for mentioning herzogs earlier movies and its soundtracks by florian fricke/pv. listened to some it today. this is truely amazing music.
@@jojena_imm Check out the guitar version of "Aguirre" by Gary Lucas as well (ruclips.net/video/HmFeQWcZenk/видео.html).I also recommend their second album, "In den Gaerten Pharaos" (ruclips.net/p/OLAK5uy_l9h6CRK0nikdprQqHRYWw6y-mTuQ0IMcg), the music on it is somewhat proto-ambient. Their third album (ruclips.net/p/OLAK5uy_kFR2H_bfFdlOqgUd0DSB0HiZHUCn2TLL8) is a bit controversial due to its pseudo-Mozartian kitsch, but in terms of sound, I believe it is a significant achievement (that crystal-clear sound of the guitar).
Very cool, it contains everything we like in your work plus new interesting sounds from the synths. I see the title refers to Adorno; does it relate more deeply to the structure of the piece? Why exactly nine (sorry if that sounds like a crazy question)?
Thanks! Yes, the title refers to Karl-Heinz Haag's philosophical work, an almost forgotten pupil of Horkheimer and Adorno. No numerology or gematria in here, but it was important to me to outline the fact, that this would constitute quite an ensemble if played live (could be: "...for 18 studio musicians" too).
p.s.: I stumbled over a conference on haags work (100th birthday) three weeks ago. In an old lecture room above the one I made the video on "saturn VI" and biomimetics in music. the piece is made like the large soundscapes on "saturn VI", but influenced by john cage, feldman and elliott sharp I was mimicing the multidimensionality and inert structure of nature. haag's concept of negative metaphysics refers exactly to this: the complexity of nature we will never be able to grasp scientifically, especially not with antimetaphysical, strictly nominalist accounts. as this coincides very well with my thoughts on biomimetics, I thought it would make a great combo. thanks for the great exchange this year and all the best for 2025, bartek!
Only after writing my comment did I realize that the piece has a dedication. At first, I thought it was some composer. Reading the biography on Wikipedia didn’t clarify much either (although it seems he was ahead of his time - he supposedly lived for 40 years from renting apartments), so thank you for the detailed explanations. I wish you fruitful artistic work in the coming year and, above all, that it is more appreciated (only 74 followers on YT is a joke)!
The beginning is very interesting, it's nice that you're also performing a song by Joni Mitchell
thank you, bartek. the beginning needs more research. joni: what a beautiful song!
I'm responding to your last comment under this video because you deleted the one where the discussion was taking place. Yes, I read that article on Rother, it's good that there is someone writing about it, and Andrea definitely knows his stuff. And I'm sorry for trying to classify you based on simple geographical criteria again, I know it doesn't work, but I do it instinctively. You know, a German guitarist interested in electronic music probably drew inspiration from "Inventions for Electric Guitar" by Göttsching and "Architectura celestis" by Roberto Detree... As for the term "krautfunk," I don't think you were the first to use it. It already appears in the books of Julian Cope and Ulrich Adelt.
Thank you Mitka. If I had known you would add to the discussion, I would not have deleted it (so soon). Anyway, I had to make an selection and three R&D videos that do not convince had to go. „Krautfunk“: that’s interesting! Need to check out.
Maybe we need another portal for the discussion, because once my inner censorship approaches all fun and tolerance stops usually stops immediately. It’s one thing if my music is affected 🔪 but another if it’s a dialogue involving someone like you.
What was wrong with no. 5? The term "Krautfunk" is usually used to describe to Bowie's Berlin Trilogy, in case of Cope also to "Rastakraut Pasta" by Moebius & Plank (a scan of "Krautrocksampler" is available on Internet Archive, see page 125). Probably a website where you can insert links would be better. Do you have Twitter/X?
Is this a preview of a new collaborative project?
Thank you, Mitka. These are our first 20 minutes of ever playing together. Unprepared. I will be joining the Shaba trio for a large gig in the upcoming days. And then…let’s see…
Really, without any preparation? And that sort of post-rock song at the end with Holdsworth-like elements?
@@BM_24It could be a song by Shaba. However, you hear me playing on top directly and unprepared (and that’s why three to four notes are not fitting)
You are constantly delivering high quality stuff! Krautfunk ❤
Thank you so much in behalf of the development team ;-) . R&D money is quite good at the moment so expect more test tubes to come soon!
Beautiful set of pieces, Jo ! Bautiful nylon tone, too. All the best !
thank you so much, maestro. this means a lot to me! 🙏🙏🙏
In the second part of the lecture, you mainly focus on composers who incorporate models borrowed from the sciences of complex systems into their work. I would like to add that in the case of improvised music, researchers try to apply similar models to describe it (chaos, non-linear dynamics, self-organizing systems). Those interested in this topic may find David Borgo's book "Sync or Swarm" worth recommending. John Cage often echoed Coomaraswammy's idea that the responsibility of the artist is to imitate nature in her manner of operation.
Thanks for this, as I just discovered biomimetics and related topics for myself. this sounds like a must read!
Regarding free jazz and fusion: at the early stage of development, the distinct divide between these styles that we see today wasn't yet apparent; bands like Tony Williams Lifetime or Weather Report combined electric sounds with a more open approach to improvisation. Even Miles Davis, who had a critical attitude towards free jazz, on "Miles Davis at Fillmore", presents music not so far removed from it. The first fusion bands that operated in Europe were often formed by musicians previously associated mainly with free jazz: Association P. C. (Courbois), Et Cetera (Dauner). Of course, the above remarks apply if one does not make a distinction between jazz rock and fusion (I doubt it would make sense for music created around 1969).
thanks for this important comment, Mitka. I need to check out P.C. and Et. Cetera. The Weather Report example proves this to every typical jazz listener. the debut with Ralph Towner as guest vs. "Heavy Weather". A friend of mine listened to the entire WR catalogue with his band in historical chronology and summed it up like: "its like the church or communism: there was magic involved, so much creativity in the beginning, so much idealism and in the end it almost became like a corupt institution." maybe it has to do with record bosses or leaders becoming over 30 (the 68' revolutioners famously didn't trust anyone over 30). or the increasing lack of diversity over time, as especially the fusion of free jazz and synth was also a big topic of afro futurism.
@@jojena_imm Your friend put it perfectly, I'm stealing that quote! Unfortunately, the evolution of most of these groups looked like this, pressures from labels pushing for more commercial sound are the most likely cause. Recommended videos form YT: Association P.C. - ruclips.net/video/_RvR7oG8Uz4/видео.html Et Cetera - ruclips.net/video/7xBqv9Pb-yQ/видео.html Albums: Association P.C. - Sun Rotation (ruclips.net/video/M8PnJTn9v2k/видео.html) Association P.C. + Jeremy Steig - Mama Kuku (ruclips.net/video/WXlWuETxDss/видео.html) Et Cetera - Et Cetera (ruclips.net/video/P7gidn5AeVU/видео.html) Wolfgang Dauner's Et Cetera - Live (ruclips.net/video/PAq-6XeIoEU/видео.html)
@@jojena_imm It seems to me that Association P. C. was on the same level as the best representatives of American fusion. You also mentioned Afrofuturism: do you know if it's true that Sun Ra had an influence on that whole cosmic/mystical image, for which Stockhausen later became known?
@@BM_24Probably yes, but I don’t know really. At least it’s almost a shame to not mention him in my lecture, as he obviously claimed to stem from Saturn 🧐 🪐 (that’s what you mean right? Vs. Stockhausen who later claimed to stem from Sirius) . But it’s great to see that their lately has been a lot of musicologist research on free jazz and black American music. In Germany we have the internationally acknowledged Wolke Verlag, „composing while black“ and the Braxton book are a great read, still need to read the biography of Eric Dolphy. I am sure a critical Sun Ra work would be a great read.
@@BM_24but it’s great you mention 69-75 miles. He was mid 40 back then, which would be equal to 60/70 nowadays in the context of medicine and career path in music. And pushed the envelope so hard. And as you said stayed true the fusion as we refer to it here. It’s a single event in art history and makes miles one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. You know, I once asked composer Friedrich Goldmann (a pupil of Paul Dessau and Stockhausen, a friend of Boulez) about which of the fusion music we as teens loved so much he would find interesting. And he said (very Adorno style): it’s all culture industry. With the exception of the early stuff like Wayne Shorter super nova and electric miles.
Dude, holy smokes man. RUclips recommended me this video just now. The atmospheric, depressive "on edge" vibe is astounding at the beginning.
thanks man. glad you like it.
Very interesting. Are your recent tracks on Bandcamp?
🙏 yes.
Any hint on where to look for this biomimetism in the music?
@@BM_24 After the classics, which would include Messiaen´s ornithology (catalogue d´oiseaux) and I would say Xenakis (as biologists increasingly see the world with the eyes of physicists and mathematicians, or as I understand as a layman they actually brought natural scientists to conceptualize their science in a much more complex way), I first and foremost would name Elliott Sharp, who did a lot of bio inspired music since his Hudson River pieces. I recommend "Steppe" from 2023 as a starting point, but there is more, A LOT more (usually you see it in the Cover´s: trees, microscopic pictures etc.). Alvaro Domene did a track called "biomimetics" (with Harvey Valdes?). Henry Kaiser is actually an underwater researcher AND musician. Check out his soundtrack for Werner Herzog. And so is free jazz saxophone legend Akira Sakata. These are just first hints. I am sure there must be more. Much more - through music history. But just as in industry I would say: It should not be superficially biomimetic (the short coo coo in the symphony), but the biologic principle should have left a deep trace in the musical material. (oh yes: I would call Adrian Belew a biomimetic guitarist: Elephant talk, the birds etc.).
Sorry, I should have written "in your music". I was referring to the Bandcamp notes saying: "some listeners might notice that I am working biomimetically for the first time".
@@BM_24 Sorry from my side. It´s the way things evolve over time and process in the long ambient textures. It´s something existent in some of my early ambient works already, but I was never really open to include "living" forms and processes in my textures. It was more about loops and grain in the past, so a lot more "mechanical".
Quite a lovely piece
Sounds amazing! Great job!!
thanks!
You made my day! The acoustic parts seem particularly challenging to perform. Interesting reference to the sound of Indian music in the part 4. And of course, I like the idea of combining sections in different styles.
thanks mitka, glad you liked it. a.) acoustic guitar: yeah, it's basically sending an 70's ECM guitarist through a stockhausen free improvisations 1960 serial "preset". b.) indian: interesting. not an intention! but the violin/cello sound going microtonal over a drone invokes it immediately. maybe it's time for an ECM/shakti branch on titan.
🌪🌪🌪I wonder if you will ever be able to find a way to combine it with other styles known from the previous free solo recordins
Thank You Mitka. Yeah, the point here is to overcome the frets of the guitar as it can be heard in Xenakis‘ famous glissandi. It would be great to combine such sounds with a more straight forward fusion, but not a cheesy but more edgy one. Let’s see if there ever unfolds a new synthesis here. Those experiments sort of have a life to their own. Following „Objective possibilities…“
In your biographical note on Bandcamp, if I remember correctly, you had information that you played in Chatham's guitar orchestra. I thought maybe it is something related to these experiences. I count on the continuation of the "solo improvisations IV", in my opinion containing some of your best fusion playing.
Great!👌👌
Looking forward to hear it!!💯
Jo Jena entering the "saturationist" phase? Nice guitar sound on the solo.
This is correct. Just saw a documentary on Romanian spectralism (awesome!). Also performed with the FIM free jazz collective a few weeks ago in the middle of Frankfurt and had the privilege to blow some heavy dissonant drones into the city air. When I finally read Georg Friedrich Haas always loved the drone like humming of electric generators as a child (so did I, actually who didn’t?) the path for this free solo was clear…sitting in Peitz (free jazz festival) while writing this. It’s a pitty these large coal areas do not exist anymore. But well, of course it’s better for the people and the environment. At least in the memory some dark Eastern European ambient can take place…
@@jojena_imm Yeah, Romanian spectralism is amazing! I wonder how fans of the your more fusion-oriented material react to your new recordings? Have a blast!

🤘🏼
One of your best recent free solos!
Thank you Mitka. I was binge listening to the new Jonathan Bockelmann album „Childish Mind“ (what an album!). Have you heard it? I guess I could profit more from classical rubato time feel - expressing a certain motif, letting it shine ✨
I haven't listened to it yet, need to check it out. But it seems to have a good influence on your music and I think that approach works very well with Hydrangea-like material.
You are right about the Bockelmann's album! The music is sophisticated and easy on the ear without sounding banal. BTW "the Luteplayer‘s in 1620" to what you are refering to in your review?
@@BM_24 there is this fantastic album with music by John Dowland and others by Rolf Lislevand on ECM.
I can't find any of his albums on ECM featuring Dowland's compositions. Maybe you meant a different album (by John Potter’s Dowland Project?).
Why Robert Hood? Isn't his concept a bit too limiting for a jazz guitarist?
its the science of the hi-hat. the science of rhythm, especially (white?) jazz guitarists forget to see when conceptualising black american music with categories of european 19th conservatories (scales, modes, chords). its like the old discourse of classical western music against jazz. techno changed the world. period. hood is a pioneer in this regard. I wished more jazz guitarists would study his stuff - it would definitely help to generate more groove and swing besides studying goodricks voice leading almanach, for sure. listen to the hi hat and organ in minimal nation. and the hi hat and organ in jimmy smith classic blue note recordings. this is ONE legacy, one path!
You're right about the revolutionary nature of techno. I wonder if anyone has studied the rhythms of this music in a systematic way. Interesting observation about the use of the hi-hat.
There is a video of hood (red bull academy) here on YT where he talks about all these issues. Rhythmic aspects? I don’t know. Probably Jeff Mills was studied intensely in this regard. Berlin musician Paul Frick from Brandt, Brauer, Frick could probably write long essays about it - he is a studied avant-garde composer as well. Furthermore I recommend all work of Berlin Techno artist Stefan Goldmann, especially his latest work investigating techno in its avant-garde aspects.
I am not well acquainted with the history of early techno, mostly listening to those artists associated mainly with the IDM trend. Those early recordings seemed rather too one-dimensional to me. I guess I need to get more familiar with Hood's work, I watched parts of that interview you recommended and he looks like an interesting artist. From minimal techno I know only GAS, so I'm eager to get acquainted with Goldmann's works. Thanks for the recommendation!

You are a true master of this kind of music (ambient with a musical spine)! And I mean it without exaggeration.
🙏thank you Mitka. This is very valuable because I often think: Does the world need another ambient track? (it costs some CO2 though).
P.S.: And let me underline the fact that you sponsored enough for the upcoming 70 solo sets now 🙏🙏🙏
It is very difficult to find something worth listening to in that genere. An ambient track is usually an interesting sound design but all ruined by some silly one finger piano melody. And the music is lacking a sense of development or change making it hard to listen attentively. I think cat video posters should be more worried about CO2 than you. P. S. It' s good to hear that you will continue with the free solos!
Why did you choose this one of Saturn's moons? Hyperion with its chaotic orbit seems to be a better example against cosmic harmony theories? After reading the wiki page about Dione's orbit I still have no clue.
