    I think it entirely depends on how the subject matter is presented. _The Acolyte_ features a non-adult who is molested by an adult woman, and who ultimately uninstalls himself as an adult because of it. _That_ is fine, that's unfortunately a thing victims, especially male victims, will experience and talking about that is worthwhile. _The problem_ is that this young man ends up ending himself because the child of his abuser shows up and makes him feel bad her mother was killed by one of the young man's guardians as a result of her molesting him, and the narrative itself treats this like it's a perfectly justified act. _That_ I do take issue with.

    A corporation's responsibility is to it's bottomline, an artist's is to their vision.

  • @spookyfirst9514
    @spookyfirst9514 2 часа назад

    Final Thoughts: "What do you think is the responsibility of an artist? What do you think is the responsibility of a producer? What do you think is the responsibility of a company? And what is the difference of these three things?" An artist's responsibility is to share their authentic selves with the wider world, as best they can. I'm not one that insists it has to make a statement on society, or be all about politics. As an artist myself, I hold to a professional standard for my work, in writing and in painting. Production involves budgets, logistics, marketing, and more, whether it's in a creative role or a product like a toaster. Other than doing their best for a given project, not sure what else I can add. Producers in the arts have to navigate all the behind the scenes work to bring the project to the public start to finish. You don't have to be an artist to do it, but you do have to understand the process of bringing something to life. Media companies have a responsibility to make movies, tv shows, et al to a professional standard for their audiences. When a company has a reputation of making movies and shows that have universal appeal, popularity, and achieve excellence, that will be the bar they will be judged by. An artist can be part of all three, or stick to making art independent of the other two. Production and companies without artists or creative input can do well if all they want to do is sell soap or cars. When it comes to movies, tv shows, or music there is no substitution for a seasoned artist. "Have you seen an increasing inflexibility or an increasing bias or aggression at creatives to work in a certain way?" Yes. There is off the chart aggression to deconstruct and even destroy stories and media that have been around over a century. There is incredible pressure put on contemporary artists to cater to a restricted set of rules steeped in politics. The end result is work that is soul less, shallow, and superficially pretty. In response to that, there is equal and opposite aggression to return or hang on to time tested standards that bring a well rounded story to life. One group wants good stories, with well developed characters and settings. The Deconstructionists don't care about stories, they want 'representation' and messaging that tells people how they should behave. The constant clash of the two is exhausting. It's going to reach a point in which creatives are going to walk away from the media outlets and companies that have decided to cater to Deconstructionism.

      Its always blurry what art can even more context matters. And art pushing boundaries is fine, if its responsible in no real what we al agree harm. Through naked children innocent. Ok nudity per se isnt sexual. And yeah dah picturesof nude children are especially in the past with no internet, ok its not good in general but zhere 😅s a context in especiallypast art there might be context, if its not meant, i mean there can be context thsts fine but excrptions in dont share that online ever. And yep can we agree that some is too suspect and shouldnt be defended, there is a controversap area thats fine but some thngs bad should be. Idk nuance? zhere is clealy bad and there is nuance in controversial

    Yeah, the little sister part is weird. I'm the youngest kid with two older sisters and one older brother. I never asked more than "do you like him/her?" when I was 12. Knowing my oldest sister, she probably would've been outraged if I'd asked something like that cause of our age difference and dynamic.

    9:49 This reminds me of a trope I dislike in stories about codependent female friendships. Usually there's some kind of resentment or unaddressed issue. But one of them has a boyfriend, and so the other one gets with her boyfriend. If it's supposed to be a vaguely or explicitly lesbian/bisexual story, it'll be because she wants to "get closer" to who she truly wants. (🤨...?) And if they're just toxic best friends, it'll be a low self esteem or "I wanted to be you" thing. At this point, its so overdone.

    10:57 Maintaining a relationship with an abusive ex is a mine field. It's even more complicated when it's a parent. Everyone's situation is different. There are some authors who 'romanticize' subjects that make my hair stand on end (Haunting Adeline), and other's whose take on the grittier behavior of teenagers matches my own experience growing up in a high school where my classmates behaved like baboons (Forever). The first makes me cringe and avoid reading that sub category. The second reminds me of a time in my life I'd rather forget, because it was years ago and I've healed since then. Is it irresponsible for them to write that way? No. One of the most toxic ways abuse is perpetuated is by NOT talking about it. My own work doesn't shy away from the tough subjects. To do so would rob the story of depth. Books don't have to have a 'lesson'. 17:35 "What are your feelings on that....is there a limit and what do you consider responsible or irresponsible writing if anything at all?" As a reader, I am responsible for my choices on what I read. I dig inside to see if the writing is just setting off my own baggage, or if the story itself is trash. The Bluest Eye triggered a strong reaction, that doesn't mean it should never have been written. Haunting Adeline was a book I'd never get near, that doesn't mean it should never have been written either. It's Dark Romance--which has always been a sub-set of erotica. If I know I don't like a genre or author's work, I don't go there. That's why I watch book reviews here on YT, especially with books I know I won't buy. Autobiographies can and should show readers the fullness of someone's life. That's going to include traumas and subjects people may not be comfortable with. When it comes to non fiction I don't expect someone to edit or censor themselves to appease public opinion. Authors are always going to include facets of their lives in their books. Some do it well (My Dark Vanessa), and some miss the mark (Tampa). 26:22 Eva making a place for Kevin doesn't strike me as irresponsible. It is unrealistic, in my opinion, because I've read too much about pathological behavior to believe Kevin wouldn't eventually erase his mother. It is tragic, and sad, and harbors hope on Eva's part. It made the ending heart breaking. My Dark Vanessa is a brave book, and it gives agency to other children who were groomed.

      It was a question weeks ago about whether censorship is sometimes justified. Child pornography was given as an example of something that could be justifiably censored. The point of giving that example was to see if there was an extreme example of something that could be agreed on. It's kind of crazy that you can give a direct example, but people will jump from, "If you censor CP, then that's only the start and more censorship will come, so you can't censor anything." I'm usually trying for a temperature check more than anything. If we can't agree on an extreme, then there's no point in having a conversation. You're not gonna change each other's mind, and I don't want to pursue further. People are allowed to believe what they want and it's fruitless to continue if you think /that/ differently. lol

    53:12 "Is that weird?" Did I think about my parents? Hell no. I never understood why they married in the first place. In High School there were kids who did nothing but talk about sex. In college I knew a few people who's parents were swingers, but it was understood they weren't going to discuss it, for which I was grateful. 1:04:25 Unfortunately, in college there was a guy who was always eager to introduce 'Mickey'. He had the scruples of a tomcat, and ended up thrown out of his fraternity. My best friend used to use a code name for her husbands penis. She'd leave him a message using the name so he wouldn't work late. Another girlfriend used a code name for date night with her husband because she worked with kids, and didn't want them to know about it. 1:26:15 A fever that high could weaken your limbs and cause a bad fall. source: statcarewalkin.com/info/is-it-good-to-shower-when-you-have-a-fever.html 1:33:44 Having a baby for the experience sounds like a Hippy thing. 2:01:29 The sex positive crowd quit pestering me when I said "No means no. If you have a problem with that, I don't care." Without friendship there are no relationships worth having. My marriage is rock solid because it's based on a deep friendship. Overall: It hasn't aged well. I did go to good reads and look over reviews. A reviewer that gave the book 4 stars had an opinion I agreed with. (Look for the name Katrina Passick Lumsden) She sums it up better than I can: "This is not a fantasy. There aren't any sparkly metrosexual vampires guarding the heroine's virtue while simultaneously watching her sleep. This is a book about two 17-year-olds who meet, like each other, hook up, fall prey to their misguided, immature conceptions of what love is, then have to deal with what their relationship is once faced with reality. It's shallow, yes, because teens are usually pretty shallow. It's sexual, again, because teens are pretty sexual. It's also over rather quickly...like the majority of teenage relationships." As far as naming body parts, it can be hilarious between long term partners. It's not weird or outrageous. Again, I think Ms Lumsden says it better: "I've seen women give their breasts and/or vaginas names and that's perfectly OK, but a guy giving his penis a name is somehow disgusting? OK, so let's say you think girls who name their body parts are disgusting, as well. To you I say ---- lighten up. Life is too short to find fault with something so completely innocuous. So he named his penis, what guy hasn't, at least jokingly, called his penis by a name? Sometimes a girlfriend names it! *Gasp* But the thing I really don't understand is how this part of the book has come to be used as proof of how bad the book is. It's realistic. I guess if you're not a huge fan of reality, however, it could be a bit problematic. Just try and forgive Ms. Blume's audacity." (Note, edited for snark.) The book doesn't bother me. I agree it's out dated, and cut down to bare bones, it just doesn't strike me as on the same level of 'nope' as some of the other books have. That Utah removed it from schools is warranted, because it fits the criteria in the law for removal.

It sounds like Katherine didn't really love her ex boyfriend. For whatever reason, Michael 'does it' for her. She ends up behaving like her ex, and that makes me wonder if she ever gains any introspection/realization of that.

    I am really surprised you never read Judy Blume! I loved her Fudge series and I also read Sally J. Freeman as herself and Blubber. I never had a y interest in Forever

      Yeah, the Fudge books were good. I'm the oldest in my family, so in hindsight, I probably found reading them really cathartic, as well as just plain entertaining.

    5:00 The only Judy Bloom book I read as a kid was called "Tiger Eyes". I loved it. It was the first book I read that dealt with some of the issues I was forced to face. I wish I still had it, just to see how things have changed, but my paperback fell apart several moves ago. (I'm tempted to find it again on Kindle.) There was no spicy anything in Tiger Eyes. It was one of the few actual YA books I've ever read.

    4:39 Joey is in a hot mess class of her own. 😺 Her journey was tough, and Wayland made me cry. (Came back when I realized I didn't finish my thought. Rough week.)
