I really like the point about how Jesus is placing presence and being present and connected above other things, in that case above analytically reviewing the law to judge whether the current action is correct or not. Now that you suggest that, I can see that in other stories about Jesus, and perhaps even in some parables. The first that comes to mind is the story of Mary and Martha, two sisters who were hosting Jesus in their home. One sister does the bustling, busy housemaker/hostess act, and she passes criticism on her sister who is sitting at Jesus' feet attuning to his words. Jesus rebukes the first sister and says that the latter's attunement is exactly the most important thing to be doing in that moment. I can see more subtle hints of this thread of presence in other stories. The samaritan woman at the well who is condemned by her fellow villagers as a harlot, but Jesus is present and focused on talking with her and does not judge her. The story of the good samaritan caring for the attacked person on highway has elements of being present with and caring for the person who is in front of him, rather than the religious people who pass by. In a way, even the parables of store up not for tomorrow, but believe that you will be provided for could be looked at through the lens of being present in the moment rather than focusing on saving up for some future tomorrow. One of these parables is specifically about a rich farmer who spends all his effort amassing storehouses full of grain, but then he dies before he gets any use from it (The Parable of the Rich Fool, Luke 12:13-21). This story is more cautioning against greed. But if you think deeper, it's about where do you spend your effort, which is where do you spend your presence or focus - iIn the today or in the future. What do you hold as most valuable in life - wealth or connection and relationships.

I like that phrase "cloud of unknowing". In religion, we are generally taught about certainty. Often people are taught to speak with authority, with certainty. But the reality is that there is so much that is left to the unknown in the bible and in life itself. And becoming okay with, and even excited about, the cloud of unknowing is the spark of life. The place where aliveness lives. Where we can keep seeking and learning and growing.

At about 5 minutes, you share about the parts that had vulnerability coming up around your assignment. As they started to speak about these big questions, I felt a lot of compassion. "Describe the biggest moments in your life" To authentically write about that really is a lot. And it can bring up feelings of inadequacy too. I feel like maybe it touched on the parts that feel ashamed or vulnerable or not good enough for how they spent their 20s. I know deeply those parts that feel like "what have I accomplished" and comparing to others. I appreciate you sharing about this reluctance or "procrastination". Thank you.

The being with, especially how Jessica frames it, reminds me of another story from the Bible: Jesus at the home of Mary and Martha as told in Luke 10:38-42. Martha is the sister that most people associate with being the good host for a guest coming to her house, running around, being busy. But Mary sits at Jesus's feet and listens attentively. Martha scolds Mary for her "laziness", but Jesus tells them that Mary is being the better host and she should not be scolded for that. Here is the text from the NRSV Bible: Jesus Visits Martha and Mary 38 Now as they went on their way, he entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. 40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; 42 there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.” I'm starting to hear that this is the magic that you and this book are seeing in Mary Magdalene. That she was the one that stayed with, that put aside doing so she could be truly present with Jesus throughout everything. She stayed with the pain of the loss and ultimately came out the other side of the grief of loss and was able to see the miracle of resurrection.

I feel excited to hear all of this. I have recently come across the term Christian deconstruction and have come to realize that I went through that a few years ago. I became more spiritual, but had become disenfranchised by the religious system that I was in that was so tied to my childhood and family of origin. I also found incredible freedom and compassion through the spirituality that is inherent in the essence of internal family systems, and I also found resonance in learning about the energy of the Tao, the Universe, the Source. But I would like to work on some of that spiritual trauma and recapture some of the beauty in the essence of the bible that I had through my past religion. Finding other people that I know that are talking about similar things feels beautiful. But also sad for some parts. Because it feels like I'm only going to get to watch and not participate in having my story and ideas and knowledge heard. But at least I can hear people talking about questions that are important in my life too, and that feels good. Thank you for doing this. I look forward to hearing about what this book is actually about. For feedback, I do hope that you won't feel too constricted to sticking to the one chapter at a time method. That could get quite long, which could mean that it wouldn't get finished, and that would leave us viewers out of getting the gold from the later chapters of the book.

  • @alexcampbell1668

The shadow vision you mentioned at 11 minutes sounds a lot like the central vs peripheral vision paradigm that I've been thinking of. Central vision is the primary mode of seeing. Many people don't even know that there is another way of seeing. But there is also a peripheral vision that has a different purpose. Peripheral vision is about catching movement and shadow, whereas central vision is about seeing color and sharp image. A lot can be learned when we learn to use our peripheral vision. It reminds me of your talking about suddenly finding that there is something to see on the sides and not just straight ahead. I appreciate hearing this alignment between our metaphors for looking at things in a new way that adds perspective and life to an old story.

This is an excellent video. Thank you for sharing these snippets. Your right. just taking a pause is really powerful. It can take work for our parts to feel comfortable taking that moment of silence. But you are showing us so well what can happen when we start incorporating that permission to pause into our life and communications with others.
