Ancient Utrecht. Netherlands. Walking around the city in 2024
Ancient Utrecht is called the pulsating heart of Holland and the second "best place" in the country after Amsterdam (by the way, Utrecht is located only 45 kilometers from the capital of the country and you can get to it from Amsterdam by train in less than an hour). The city was built around the tower of the Dome Cathedral, which is visible from everywhere.
Utrecht is home to the tallest church in the Netherlands, as well as one of the oldest universities in Europe and the Schroeder House. The latter, built by order of a wealthy lady at the beginning of the XX century and at the same time similar to a modern cottage, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In addition to the sights...

The province was founded on January 1, 1986. On one of our trips to the Netherlands, we stopped in the youngest province of this country - Flevoland and visited the wonderful town of Urk. Flower fields occupy a huge territory - at least 30 square kilometers - along the seashore between the city of Haarlem in the north and the resort of Nurwijk in the south. Currently, about three quarters of the tulips sold in the world are grown in Holland. Watc...

    oh cr@p.. Utrereg me Stadsie..... this might become a long comment. I will try to keep things short but if I can give extra info I will. 1:28 To any tourists with children (or those interested in trains) take this train. It will go to Station Maliebaan which is at the Dutch Railway Museum. A fun, somewhat interactive museum about the Dutch rail history. (Children 0-3 free, the rest of us pay €17,50pp. tbf I am not sure if that includes the ticket from Centraal to Maliebaan) 2:47 really? how did you find out if I may ask? 3:20 someone else already mentioned the "dangers" of this spot, I added some additional locations where you should take extra care under their comment 5:55 Zoudenbalch, believe me when I say that the facade does not do justice at how big this actually was. The Bakkerspoort on the Mariaplaats was part of the original building. 11:25 Ah I see this was just prior to the final scaffolding teardown. Most of the green protection fabric is gone. They were done a whopping 2 months ahead of schedule. Still took them almost 5 years to restore what they wanted to restore. I can finally see it from my appartment at the edge of Utrecht again. 12:18 Fun fact: after the Vuelta and Tour de France had their start in Utrecht, the number of tourists from Spain and France went trough the roof. Also among Dutch visitors it became hugely popular to the point it defeated Amsterdam this year as most popular city to visit (source Algemeen Dagblad July 1st 2024) 12:45 Dom/St Martinus Cathedral short history: Originally the site of Castellum Trajectum (100AD) a main Roman encampment. hosting many small churches over the centuries. Building of the current Church started in 1254 and lasted for 255 years. It was named after a Roman Military turned Christian and eventually Bisschop called Martinus van Tours. In 1674 the midschip collapsed (the part now missing between Church and tower) after a huge storm. The rubble was not removed until 1826. The Church started out as Roman Catholic but changed to a Protestant Church after the Iconoclasm of 1580 14:20 The old Court of Law. Originally build as monestary. It has been the Court of Law for Utrecht from 1838 untill 2913. 15:24 nononononono you take that back 😛, they are nothing like those in Amsterdam, they are fastly superior. there are no warfs or warfcellars in Amsterdam. You can not sit at the canal in Amsterdam. When you are in a boat in Amsterdam you have to strain your neck to see above the walls, not so much in Utrecht. Nothing against Amsterdam but that statement was factually wrong. 17:18 the proper name is Dom Church (Domkerk in Dutch) or St Maarten's Cathedral (the official name) 20:29 I am sorry. Technically it might be but nobody in Utrecht considers that a "local park", I say we don't even consider it a park. There are much better options for that within a 5 minute walk (Park Lepelenburg, Griftpark) which are proper parks. Lepelenburg being part of the Singels around Utrecht, Griftpark being just outside city center. These parks are were you find everybody, not the Stadschouwburg "garden". I feel you missed out on some great spots, I absolutely invite you to come back one day. Just like many other cities, Utrecht can not really be done in a day. I do hope you enjoyed your stay. If you do come back feel free to shoot me a message via the contact info on my profile if you want/need some tips.

      @@SeetheWorld-HD Your welcome. Seems my other comment didn't come through so I mention it here. You were a bit confused about the "Holland" thing in another comment. I can recommend the Channel CGP Grey with the video Holland vs the Netherlands. This video should tell you all you want to know. That said, don't be to bothered about it. We are largely to blame for it ourselves. When important sporting events are going on or with Kingsday you see Holland everywhere, on shawls, on T-shirts, on commercials etc. Yes, there will be people offended when you use it but I can guarantee you most of us won't be offended by a foreigner saying Holland instead of the Netherlands.

      One more thing about the canals. What makes them really really different is their original purpose (deliveries of goods), which is why they have that 'street' below. Those doors you see at the water level, reach into cellars that reach into cellars under the houses. Actually most of them are interconnected through underground tunnels underneath the streets. There's a whole 'city' underneath the streets.

    If visiting Utrecht - and by all means do - be on the alert when inside the station and under the 'bollendak'. A lot of illegal aliens harassing people, and pick-pickets. Police do what they can but international legislation blocks a solution.

      Sadly I have to agree that especially the Station and Hoog Sjagarijne area are the "risk" areas in Utrecht however another favorite pick pocket area would be front and back squares of City hall, het Ledig Erf and Het Wed. In fact I would pay even more attention at those places as everybody gets warned for the station area but not for those other places.1 That said, overall it is still safer than some of the other major Dutch cities. (not naming names)

      The eternal mistake about the country's name and the names of its different parts. The county's name is 'the Netherlands'. The name Holland comes from the provinces north Holland and and south Holland. In total the country has 12 provinces. The city of Utrecht is the largest city in the province of Utrecht.

      @SeetheWorld-HD 2 месяца назад

      @@hfloor But does Utrecht relate to the Netherlands? Would it be correct to say that "Utrecht is a city in the Netherlands"?
