When The River Ely Was Tidal - Trip Around The Tidal Harbour, A Long Gone Landmark - Cardiff History
Oh how things have changed in the last 30 years! Back then I was a keen photographer, and loved nothing better than a good day out with my mates taking photos of abandoned and unloved places.
One day, we went to the run-down warehouse and tidal harbour on the bank of RIver Ely, through acres of derelict land and across a rickety old bridge. This place was spectacular, all gnarled wood and rotten metal. It was in a sorry state, but still a working area with businesses operating in the old warehouses around there. It was a photographer's dream, and we took a ton of photos, at least till our film ran out (a major pre-digital issue for a skint youngster...)

Barry Island In The 1950s - Scenic Railway And Fair Rides
Просмотров 6 тыс.6 лет назад
Some great footage of Barry Island from what we think are the late 1950s. You can see the old style rides, including the huge old Scenic Railway that was demolished in the early 1970s, and an example of a covered caterpillar, like the example at Folly Farm in Pembrokeshire. The footage was originally shot by members of the Cardiff Cine Society.
Scenes Of Cardiff Docks - Tiger Bay From The 1930s-1950s
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.6 лет назад
A short compilation of shots of an unrecognisable Cardiff Bay from the 1930s to the 1950s. Whilst a few of the buildings are still there and noticeable, the vast majority of the footage looks like it came from a different world. The footage was originally shot by the Cardiff Cine Society, and has been sourced from a number of old VHS tapes.
Rainy Day @ Cardiff Bay Beach - 31st July 2017
Просмотров 3017 лет назад
The annual summer event down the bay, The Cardiff Bay Beach is in full swing. Sadly, the great British summer weather is not playing ball at all, so when we visited for the first time this Monday past, the heavens opened and it hammered down for the first half hour or so of our visit. But as the saying goes, there's no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes. We soldiered on, an...
Barry Island Fun Fair & Illuminations - 1989 - No Sound
Просмотров 7 тыс.7 лет назад
Sent to us by Roger Middleton, there's some great scenes of Barry Island at night in this footage. Please note there's no audio and the footage is also jumpy. This is how the original video files were sent to Then Was... and we suspect it's due to the original capture from video tape. The scenes featured show the night time illuminations and lights around the resort and the fun fair. You'll see...

Просмотров 39 тыс.7 лет назад
A compilation of clips from 1986's Bloody New Year, aka Time Warp Terror by British Schlock-Master Norman J. Warren. Notable for clips of the old Barry Butlins and the various rides that have long since gone from Barry Island's fun fair, which is now a pale shadow of its former self. If you want to see more vintage Barry Island, please take a look at these pages: Barry Butlins in old postcards ...

went on traum boat in 88 lost money on it come out my pockets when upside down, laughing thinking it was someone elses money. log flume made barry island stand out. the arcades were full of proper arcade machines 80s best period for arcades outrun shinobi final fight golden axe wwf superstars etc etc.
This might've been where I first played Kung Fu Master.
OH MY GOD ROC N RAGE ARCADE GAME. HELLO SHEILA, HELP ME
Used to love that game, had forgotten its name, now I can look it up on MAME!
THOSE WERE DAYS FOR ME 80S. RIDES WERE CHEAP PAYED INDIVUALLY BY CASH, TOP IT ALL OFF ARCADES BEFORE ADVANCEMENT OF HOME CONSOLES. SEE SOMEBODY PLAYING PAC LAND THERE IN AMUSEMENTS DARK ROOM MUSIC BLASTING FROM MACHINE.
I used to pass there when I was little. I still remember the giant carpet rolls sticking out of the church door.
I remember walking past and seeing Kung-Fu Eddie sat on the steps! :)
@thenwas Hi, thanks for the response. I'm glad people like you keep hold of old footage, you wouldn't believe the amount of time (maybe you do) I've tried to find stuff that shout be recorded, only to come up empty handed. For example, there was a fire that decimated a huge garage just off city road between 2000 and 2002 roughly, but no mention of it anywhere I've looked. Oh and I used to be around the Broadway and Clifton Street area when I was younger, as my Grandparents lived in Cecil Street.
@@dilbertfish Yeah, there's loads of my own old photos and videos I wish I still had, but are now long gone. I lived on Stacey Road till the early 1990s, so know the area and time period well. Remember the carpets also.
God bless you Tony
Great to see The Flitzer and log flume in their 80s glory, it was a great amusement park for my younger self
Barry used to have two ghost trains really - The Ghost Train & The Wacky Gold Mine.
propa,...lovley
as someone who lives in barry and loves the 80s thank you! It's strange yet great to imagine things then compared to how they are now
A trip down Barry was the highlight of the 6 weeks holiday. Top top memories.
went there a few times in late 70s and 80s miss butlins wish it was still there great times
traum boot the ride where you lost your money out of your pocket 🤣
Can anyone remember they had little trikes ride at the top end?
YES TO TRIKES. CAN YOU REMEMBER TRAUM BOAT, PIRATE SHIP GOING ALL WAY OVER

❤️Papa' mi manchi. Sei diventato nonno di Nicole.❤️
Please bring back these real fun fairs and get rid over the morden shit that's out there today
Love the old funfairs much better than the shit fun fairs we have today way over the top with dangerous over scarry big rides
I loved the centry 2000
The centry 2000, was never scraped it is resting all sheeted up and still loved by the man who used to run it he is a very good friend of mine all the best from Henry. January 2024
Real fun fairs only one horrible ride the upside black pearl and the wazlers but the rest are rides unlike the shit funfairs with have today with over the top scarry rides
So, the Walzers are covered in flags - the flags of England, Scotland and the Union flag. No Welsh flag. At a fun fair in Wales... :(
Brings back some not so good memories, im sure the boat was called Mary Rose in 1986 and the flitzer was called the mousetrap. I know this because in the summer of 86 I was involved in an accident on there, ended up seriously hurt in hospital
My family spent every summer holidays at Barry Island, staying with our Grandma Powell, and it was this roller coaster that gave me a life-long fear of such rides. And yet it looks so tame compared to today's roller coaster rides.
Kitty! ❤️
Such precious footage. Thanks for sharing.
Blimey! That brought back some memories. I was 11 and used to go once a year in the summer.
Great footage thanks a lot for this my fav was the wacky goldmine loved that ride
I loved the Wacky Goldmine too, but I think my favourite was the Log Flume.
Me too, though as a child in the 80's it was actually quite scary in places!!!! Loved the jungle ride and the Log flume too!
Ha, I was 17😊 the Fun House!!!😂
Absolutely love love this👍🏼 Barry Island always been my happy place..and this just made my day..love the music..and that roller coaster!!! Wish I could have rode that..😍
Used to come here all the time with my nan. Very lovely man. My nan bought him all his salt and pepper shakers that he had displayed. Literally hundreds of them lol. I still think of him everytime I go past clifton Street. Edit. Unfortunately my Nan passed last week... I regret forgetting to show her this video. Or asking what happened to all those salt and pepper shakers lol
NO ARCADES :(
Southend Busker yeah right :(
One pub I never went in to! Not many pubs left in Splott these days!
This was a time when Barry Island was a good place to go, now it's just a shit hole.
Barry Island has never been the same since the Holiday Camp closed in 1996.
This place bought so much joy. Now it brings nothing but depression and misery
I used to spin those Waltzers as a kid working through my school holidays on the fairground, brought back memories
Oh The Log Flume.
I used to love the log flume!!!
what is this show that we are watching ? clearly not a promo video for Barry Island
It's clips from the 1986 film Bloody New Year.
More like an episode of Scooby Doo!
