Theme parks are my passion, and I believe they deserve to be discussed not just for what makes them great but also for where they fall short. On this channel, I take an honest, balanced approach to exploring the good and bad of theme parks, with a specific focus on the theming of attractions. Theming isn’t just a backdrop-it’s the heart of the experience, capable of transporting guests to another world or leaving them underwhelmed when it misses the mark.
From deep dives into forgotten rides to retrospectives on beloved classics and critiques of modern attractions, I unpack the elements that make theme parks memorable-or forgettable. Whether it’s the meticulous attention to detail that elevates an attraction or the missteps that hold it back, I’m here to analyze it all. Join me as we celebrate, critique, and explore the art of theming and its power to shape the experience.

The Slow Death of the Lost Continent
Universal Studios' Islands of Adventure opened in 1999 with a land that promised epic fantasy and thrilling storytelling: The Lost Continent. From the Arthurian legends of Merlinwood to the mythical adventures of the Arabian Marketplace and Greek mythology's Lost City, this original IP land offered unique experiences.
However, over the years, The Lost Continent has slowly faded, with major attractions like Dueling Dragons, The Eighth Voyage of Sinbad, and Poseidon's Fury replaced or abandoned. In this video, we dive into the fascinating history of The Lost Continent, explore its immersive theming, and examine how it transformed-and diminished-over time.

How Revenge of the Mummy Became a Universal Classic
Просмотров 8 тыс.7 месяцев назад
Today, we explore Universal Orlando Resort's "Revenge of the Mummy," delving into its significance to the park and evaluating how it holds up after 20 years. We'll cover its historical impact, fan favorite moments, and the technological advancements that keep this attraction thrilling visitors to this day.
This is a certified hood classic
😢 I remember going on it in the mid-90s and that seahorse was literally everything! What saddens me to see that they no longer view merfolk as a good plot for storytelling.
The lost continent is the best themed area of any theme park ever. It was truly beautiful and nearly perfect when it opened.
I saw the original story of Poseidons fury and that version was way better than the new one
The original storyline for Posiedon's Fury was far superior to the revamp. The shock of suddenly finding yourself back outside the door was amazing.
The best part of the ride is waiting in the line. The ride was mediocre and I'm not sure if it would be worth it if i didn't get to go through a short line for only 20 minutes due to a recent heavy rain.
When Islands Of Adventure First Opened In 1999, All 5 Themed Lands Were Based Off Various Types Of Literature. For Instance, Marvel Super Hero Island Is Based Off The Comic Books By Stan Lee, Toon Lagoon Is Based Off The Conic Strips By King. Features And Jay Ward, Jurassic Park Is Based Off The Novels By Michael Crichton, The Lost Continent Is Based Off Told Stories About Myths And Legends, And Seuss Landing Is Based Off The Children‘s Books By Dr. Seuss. Then In 2010, They Opened Up The Wizarding World Of Harry Potter Which Is Also Based Off The Novels By J. K. Rowling. Then In 2016, They Opened Up Skull Island Which Is Based Off The Kong Kong Movies And Which Kinda Ruined The Theming Of The Park Because Unlike The Other Themed Islands Which Started Out As Books, King Kong Started Out As A Movie. I Don’t Know Why Universal Thought It Was A Good Idea To Bring King Kong Into Islands Of Adventure Which Didn’t Fit In With The Rest Of The Park.
When my family went to universal studios my little brother made us ride the jimmy fallon race around 7~ times, I’m never getting that time back
Dude, you're about the only person who specifically addressed how bad the Poseidon's Fury retheme was. I was fortunate enough to see the first version and can confidently say that it was so, SO much better than the kiddified second iteration. To this day, I cannot understand why Universal thought the attraction warranted such a drastic and dumbed-down change when all it needed was the effects updates seen in the second version. So much has been lost with the hollowing-out of TLC. Potterheads no doubt love the area now, but before it used to have a universal appeal (no pun intended) instead of catering to a specific IP that will inevitably wane over time. It kills me that Potter has a huge footprint in both the Studios AND Islands, as if one park wasn't enough. Oh, but I do have a severe critique - it was NOT understandable how badly Dueling Dragons was treated. People bringing cell phones and other loose objects should never have been allowed and the coaster should never have been blamed for the injury that ensued. It angers me to this day that the finger was pointed at the coaster instead of the extremely bad ridership policies pursued by Universal management. I think it's pretty clear at this point that Universal considers IP to rule the roost instead of anything original, Epic notwithstanding. And when Epic does open, Potter will consume space at all three parks. ALL THREE! Ugh!
I feel like the How to Train Your Dragon and Dark Universe lands at Epic will have some obvious inspiration from The Lost Continent in its glory days.
They got rid of Twister for this?
Jimmy Fallon did nasty things while on SNL. And now he fully supports Joe Biden’s war and sex crimes. He is as bad as Matt Lauer.
I’d love a video on Spider-Man! It was so revolutionary as a kid!!
Make another BATTLESTAR GALACTICA ride. Like the old one in 1984 or the Roller Coaster in Singapore
I'm an annual passholder and have been going to Islands of Adventure since it first opened. My wife and I absolutely loved the original storyline of Poseidon's Fury. After they changed it, it was a one and done for us. We were so displeased with them ruining such a great attraction for no reason, that we never bothered with it again. You know what they say: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
I'd like to mention there's a nearly identical ride with a better theater in The Empire Sate Building hosted by Kevin Bacon.
I miss Dueling Dragons!
It may not have the brand power of the other areas, but I loved Lost Continent. D|ueling Dragons is a perfect example of "we can't have nice things" as if it weren't for those idiots that couldn't take care of their stuff we'd probably have still had the dueling aspects even through Dragon Challenge. Poseidon's Fury is an amazing show (I will never forget walking through the water tunnel) and every visit to the Continent DEMANDED a viewing of Eighth Voyage of Sinbad, for the actors you could tell had so much fun in their roles. The area dripped with ambience on its own level. It's sad absolutely none of the attractions exist anymore, and may what's left enjoy popularity before it is all fully consumed by the rest of the park in some manner.
Well said. I couldn't agree with you more!
I actually liked the newer version of Poseidon’s fury. I wish I could have been able to experience it before it closed.
How could you like it if you didn't experience it?
Because I experienced it many times when it first changed over. I just wasn’t able to go back during the last year before closing.
I just don’t get the allure of Fallon. He was OK on SNL, and his Late Night, was fine, but his Tonight Show just feels lame compared to Leno. Even Conan’s abbreviated run was a better Tonight Show than Fallons non stop laughing with all of his guests. Carson was called The King of Late Night for a reason, and the closest since his departure was Craig Ferguson who did something different. Also for a ride set in NYC, Fallon shot his stuff in Canada. It’s not like there aren’t a few locations in the city.
Best thing they could do is tear it and River adventure out and put in the crazy Jurassic world one where the dinosaurs chase your vehicle. Kong just doesn't work unless you have the ambition and money to do something on the scale and scope of kongfrontation.
Love your videos just wanted to say the background music is a little loud and makes it hard to hear your audio sometimes
Thank you for the feedback, do you feel it’s only in certain videos or all of them I’m trying to find a nice balance but it’s hard sometimes when editing to tell if it’s to loud.
im very happy to have experienced Poseidons fury before its closure and eat at mythos. this land is definitely interesting and i feel like could be made into a beautiful collab with percy jackson.
Unfortunately, that will never happen, as Disney owns the rights to Percy Jackson.
@ im aware. im just saying. as it has amazing facades already and for it all to be torn down will be pretty disappointing when it couldve been collaborated with something large like that.
No thats definitely the Fast and Furious Ride imo
I'm incredibly biased because I had my first kiss at Universal and I rode this ride with my gf multiple times, but I quite liked it for what it was when I rode. Nothing special, but ride equivalent of junk food. Plus, it was a GREAT way to cool off since it pretty much never had a line
I've always enjoyed Race Thru New York and it 10x better than Fast and Furious and Kong.
I remember really early trips to universal as a teen where I walked right past the massive Posiden building, not even realizing it was an attraction. Until one day a cast member was ushering people in, and I’m like that is this even? And I remember being AMAZED that for years I had no idea anything was even there!!!!!
I never smelled Pizza on that ride and ever since Jimmy mentioned it on the show when he was announcing the rides existence, I anticipated it. I expected to smell like Pringles pizza but either way it's definitely something that they said a lot. Never smelled it. I was even in the front row at times almost every angle I've tried.
RIP Wild Arctic
Thanks for using my footage! I tried to show as much as I could of what’s left. I made a multi angle Poseidons Fury video as well
@@jacobselleck9750 Thank you! It’s not always easy for me to get into the parks, especially now that Poseidon’s Fury is covered by walls, so your footage was a fantastic way to showcase the Lost City section.
This makes me more grateful that Epic is getting Celestial Park as that isn’t tied to an IP. Shame to see the current state of The Lost Continent.
Great video, only thing just turn down the background music a bit kind of throws people off
Never forget that cuck fallon tried to cancel Norm. Unforgivable. Fallon is an enemy of comedy.
I rode this one only because the line was so short lol.
Maybe the land of OZ but I think Harry Potter will get an expansion especially Hagrid queue or Zelda could replace it… a lot ppl don’t realize it’s 2 empty stadiums in IOA and 1 in USF…. So it’s a lot of land for both parks to expand…. But I think studios will get the next big budget land with the removal of the sound stages.
Studio needs it the most for sure, when going to Universal, IOA is THE park to spend the most time in. USF feels bland compared to IOA honestly, minus some areas. I’m all for expanding as long as they don’t touch toon lagoon😅
I will never forgive them for replacing Twister: Ride it Out with this trash
Correction: Titans ARE gods, they are just not Olympians.
Thank you for the correction, I never consider them as such but they are technically the gods who ruled the cosmos.
Sad. It’s themed so well. Not everything needs to be tied to an IP.
So it's boring just like Jimmy Fallon
Great video. Just wanted to note that The Simpsons Ride was constructed 2007-2008 in Florida and California.
I personally think that an Azkaban Prison Walkthrough Attraction would be a suitable replacement for posidons fury. The Sinbad portion could become a Godric's Hollow section. As for the Sinbad show a Chamber of Secrets Harry vs the Basalisk show would be cool with the cue starting at the entrance to forbidden Journey with Moaning Myrtles bathroom entrance and a tunnel queue leading under hogsmeade into the chamber of Secreats with the show exit mimicing the exit in the C.Of S. Movie back into hogsmeade. Also having doubles act as the Harry Potter Characters would also make it possible for Character meet and greets. Professor Doumbledore would be easy to create a meet and greet for. Due to copyright Marvel Superhero Island could be transformed into a D.C. Superhero zone with better themed rides than Six Flags D.C. Heros zone with the Hulk being rethemed to the Green Lantern, Spiderman being rethemed to Batman-Revenge, the Dr. Doom ride being demolished in favor of a teen titans (not TTG) themed indoor roller coaster similar to Revenge of the Mummy. Finally the Jurassic Park River adventure should be rethemed to Jurassic World to make it more scary and thrilling.
I agree with you on the Harry Potter ideas. However, Universal has the rights to use the Marvel Comics versions of those characters in perpetuity, as long as they keep the attractions up to date. As for the DC characters, Six Flags has exclusive rights to them in the United States, so Universal cannot.
Ugh I want his IG
The first time I rode Skull Island, was 2016…its also the last time Ive ridden it…its incredibly disappointing. Just as disappointing as Escape from Gringotts
Posiedons fury was an awesome attraction. Im very disappointed that it closed but am happy that i experienced it a bunch while we were passholders. Took plenty of pics and video
Now do The Truth about Universal's Boring Jimmy Fallon Show
I want to see them do more with their King Kong
I can only imagine how much better this ride would be if it was a ride based on Conan O'Brien.
