The Swastika of Taiwan
The Swastika of Taiwan
Documentary
5 years ago I set foot in Taiwan for the first time.
I was excited and I couldn’t wait to explore all the hidden treasures that this island had to offer me.
Like most expats, I got on trains and busses and started looking for ANYTHING that looked different.
Anything that wasn’t western.
And as I started to explore historic sites and old temples, I came across this symbol: The swastika.

#太魯閣國家公園 #黃金峽谷 #花蓮 黃金峽谷位於花蓮的太魯閣國家公園附近,是最漂亮也是較偏遠的峽谷之一。它位於布拉旦的南溪處,並且可以從三棧溪進入此河流域。 我們決定逆流而上,先在河岸先住一晚,第二天再繼續跋涉。依照以往的經驗,到達黃金峽谷應該會在兩個小時以內抵達,不過這次的行程我們想再更往前探索更多的地方,所以時間應該會再拉長一些。這段行程包含了健行、攀爬、游泳。所以一定要鍛鍊好身體才有體力應付這段的行程。 我會建議戴上安全帽,因為此區域很常會有落石的發生。再來就是防寒衣,因為河水是冰冷的。另外,如果你不是很會游泳的人,我也建議穿上救生衣,以確保安全。 有關於黃金峽谷的相關資訊以及GPS座標圖跟照片,你可以參閱David的網站: : www.maproomexplorers.com/post/goldengrotto。這對於剛入門的或是喜歡戶外活動的人,是一個非常實用的網站。 F...

    Hi! I am planning a Tw trip with the family, including my father in law who moves around in a wheelchair (folding electric or manual). Is SML doable with him? Woukd you recommend some accessible spots in TW for the trip? Thank you!

    • @discovertaiwanwithjohan
      @discovertaiwanwithjohan Год назад

      Hi there Yes, SML would be a great place for your family to visit. Many of the views and places are wheelchair friendly, especially because of the bicycle routes. However, the old temples are only accessible by stairs. Still, there's more than enough views that are wheelchair friendly and you can also do a boat trip across the lake as a fun activity. Another activity there that's not in my bideo is the gondola ride up the mountain to the aboriginal park. For the rest of Taiwan, you will find Taipei city and all the other major cities to be very wheelchair friendly. The High Speed Rail train is also great. Taiwan has wheelchair friendly busses and taxis too. If you want to see more nature, I would also recommend you rent a car or van and travel down the east coast. Hualien has Toroco that's really worth seeing I'm not too clued up with all the wheelchair friendly places, but I often see a lot of older people traveling Taiwan and there's always wheelchair fiendly bathrooms at all the tourist hotspots and fuel stations, and usually very clean. I'm sure you guys will have a great time. It might just take a little bit more planning. Let me know if there's anything I can help out with

      Hi there. The ability to get lost is usually different for different people. Some people seem to be able to get lost in a mall, while others can cross mountains in a straight line. But the bunkers are all numbered on the walls, so if you go to renegade writings website (the link is at the bottom of the video in descriptions) you can download the detailed map that Anders drew. I also recommend that you always go with a friend on excursions and also tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back. Make sure you take a flash light and an extra one with batteries. And visit during the weekend when the army is not active. Keep in mind that there's always a bit of risk involved in doing something like this. Be safe and have fun!

    • @discovertaiwanwithjohan
      @discovertaiwanwithjohan Год назад

      Hi joelwu59. Thanks for your comment! Yes, you are right. These days, the Buddhist community makes an effort to ensure that their swastika is reversed. But if you travel to some old temples and monasteries, you will find some swastikas that are turned the other way around. The Buddhists have been using the symbol for much longer, and I think pre-WW2, which ever way the cymbol was turned, was not of any concern to the Buddhists. But it later became of concern, so they most likely made a decision to display it reversed to the Nazi swastika. But this is only my theory, and I can't find any definitive documentation on this decision.

I didn't go in as I was on the way down, but I remembered you made a video about the secret bunkers in Xinfeng that I didn't fully watch. Now I've watched a bit more of your video and see it's the same place. But I did not see the bunker you entered. When I got to the area on Tuesday I heard a lot of loud explosion sounds coming from the direction of the mountain, I wonder if they were test firing cannons from the bunkers or something?

      Hey Barry You can check out the map on Anders' blog with more detail as well: www.renegadewritings.com/2021/07/22/mapping-the-tunnels-part-2/ Yes, it's a military training ground over there, but they only shoot and bomb during the week. So weekends are fine. There's a cafe on top of the hill and the owner can also take you in on a bit more of an organized tour if you are interested. But if you want to do it by yourself, I would recommend you take a buddy and an extra flashlight.

    5:13 I remember when the news of this broke. It was on Christmas Day if I remember right. It was shocking to see this was in our town. I know the history isn't as well known here, but I'm surprised no-one at any time looked at this and thought maybe they shouldn't do it. It's good to know that now they are being more educated about it. Another thing is I think there are still those who don't know about the nazis here as I saw a van here in Zhubei that had a nazi flag sticker on the front of it for a few months (It was removed after a while, perhaps the owner was told about what it was).

    Beautiful video! Love the one about Yuanzuishan as well, really neat! As for the drone laws, could it be that some of the restricted regions around Huoyanshan changed? I triple checked the official map from the CAA and the entire area around is marked as green now. I felt that maybe it was a local law from the ones in charge of that area but then Alishan is marked as restricted/red so I feel like that can't be it either. Just curious before I head out there eventually and ran into trouble. 😅

    • @discovertaiwanwithjohan
      @discovertaiwanwithjohan Год назад

      Thanks for your great comment. Yes, the restriction zones seem to always change and get updated. I had a check now as well, and it seems like that whole area is now a green zone. I've once applied for a special permission permit to fly in Kenting, and then the local office there said it's ok, I can just fly, and I don't have to worry about the permit or anything. So, I'm not too sure how these restrictions are implemented and who checks up, but I think it's best to be safe and follow the rules.

From everything I’ve been reading, Taiwan has invested billions over the decades in building numerous enormous underground complexes, with miles and miles of tunnels. One was in the news today that has the ability to store, arm and service 200 fighter jets, as well as the personal and supplies required to complete such a task. I guess with new technology and the latest demands for underground tunnels, it's just easier for the Taiwanese military to build new tunnels and bunkers, rather than refurbishing old ones.
