The Swastika of Taiwan
The Swastika of Taiwan
Documentary
5 years ago I set foot in Taiwan for the first time.
I was excited and I couldn’t wait to explore all the hidden treasures that this island had to offer me.
Like most expats, I got on trains and busses and started looking for ANYTHING that looked different.
Anything that wasn’t western.
And as I started to explore historic sites and old temples, I came across this symbol: The swastika.

Yes I agree, prices are crazy here. But if you just move a little bit out of the city, they normalize pretty quick. And there you have the benefit of less pollution, less noise and less stupid idiots with way too loud scooters or cars.
@@Reisbuerger87 Yes, I've noticed that. It's a bit of a balancing act between business opportunities and house prices.
House prices are ridiculous, rent prices are ridiculous, everyone's getting priced out!

is drone flying allow ? Nice Video
Thank you. Yes, you are allowed to fly a drone there in certain areas. Areas around the harbors and crowds are not allowed. You can download the Taiwan Civil Aeronautics Administration's APP that will show you an interactive map of where exactly you can fly in Taiwan.
The program had better add some English
A shame you don't have more videos, subscribers, views, and likes. Very well done!
Thank you! Maybe in the future 😃
Hi! I am planning a Tw trip with the family, including my father in law who moves around in a wheelchair (folding electric or manual). Is SML doable with him? Woukd you recommend some accessible spots in TW for the trip? Thank you!
Hi there Yes, SML would be a great place for your family to visit. Many of the views and places are wheelchair friendly, especially because of the bicycle routes. However, the old temples are only accessible by stairs. Still, there's more than enough views that are wheelchair friendly and you can also do a boat trip across the lake as a fun activity. Another activity there that's not in my bideo is the gondola ride up the mountain to the aboriginal park. For the rest of Taiwan, you will find Taipei city and all the other major cities to be very wheelchair friendly. The High Speed Rail train is also great. Taiwan has wheelchair friendly busses and taxis too. If you want to see more nature, I would also recommend you rent a car or van and travel down the east coast. Hualien has Toroco that's really worth seeing I'm not too clued up with all the wheelchair friendly places, but I often see a lot of older people traveling Taiwan and there's always wheelchair fiendly bathrooms at all the tourist hotspots and fuel stations, and usually very clean. I'm sure you guys will have a great time. It might just take a little bit more planning. Let me know if there's anything I can help out with
@@discovertaiwanwithjohan thanks mate, much appreciated :) we will definitely do Taipei. I am bummed out we won't be able to do both shufen and djifen though 😁
身為臺灣人,我也是超喜歡日月潭,每次去都有感動,。
One of the best places in Taiwan 😃
hi, i am thinking of visiting there recently, and i am wordering is it easy to get lost in the tunnel?
Hi there. The ability to get lost is usually different for different people. Some people seem to be able to get lost in a mall, while others can cross mountains in a straight line. But the bunkers are all numbered on the walls, so if you go to renegade writings website (the link is at the bottom of the video in descriptions) you can download the detailed map that Anders drew. I also recommend that you always go with a friend on excursions and also tell someone where you are going and when you plan to be back. Make sure you take a flash light and an extra one with batteries. And visit during the weekend when the army is not active. Keep in mind that there's always a bit of risk involved in doing something like this. Be safe and have fun!
Very elaborative captures, nice work, keep it up, I was searching some of other vloggers work before I post mine and yours stood out for me. Thank you for a concise yet comprehensive work! keep it up!

Nazi swastika is reversed from Buddhist traditional symbol. It represents anti-religious. Don't get it mixed up.
Hi joelwu59. Thanks for your comment! Yes, you are right. These days, the Buddhist community makes an effort to ensure that their swastika is reversed. But if you travel to some old temples and monasteries, you will find some swastikas that are turned the other way around. The Buddhists have been using the symbol for much longer, and I think pre-WW2, which ever way the cymbol was turned, was not of any concern to the Buddhists. But it later became of concern, so they most likely made a decision to display it reversed to the Nazi swastika. But this is only my theory, and I can't find any definitive documentation on this decision.
Hallo frienzzz my froom indonesia

I went to Fengqi Sunset Trail on Tuesday and noticed a hole in the side of the hill into one of the bunkers. I didn't go in as I was on the way down, but I remembered you made a video about the secret bunkers in Xinfeng that I didn't fully watch. Now I've watched a bit more of your video and see it's the same place. But I did not see the bunker you entered. When I got to the area on Tuesday I heard a lot of loud explosion sounds coming from the direction of the mountain, I wonder if they were test firing cannons from the bunkers or something?
Hey Barry You can check out the map on Anders' blog with more detail as well: www.renegadewritings.com/2021/07/22/mapping-the-tunnels-part-2/ Yes, it's a military training ground over there, but they only shoot and bomb during the week. So weekends are fine. There's a cafe on top of the hill and the owner can also take you in on a bit more of an organized tour if you are interested. But if you want to do it by yourself, I would recommend you take a buddy and an extra flashlight.

Nice Hiking and drone flight..want to search on the best places to fly a drone here in Taiwan.
Thank you!
5:13 I remember when the news of this broke. It was on Christmas Day if I remember right. It was shocking to see this was in our town. I know the history isn't as well known here, but I'm surprised no-one at any time looked at this and thought maybe they shouldn't do it. It's good to know that now they are being more educated about it. Another thing is I think there are still those who don't know about the nazis here as I saw a van here in Zhubei that had a nazi flag sticker on the front of it for a few months (It was removed after a while, perhaps the owner was told about what it was).
Yea, there were a few incidents in the news where people had Nazi signs or flags in their shops, but it seems like people are now quick to respond to it, and changes are being made.
Beautiful video! Love the one about Yuanzuishan as well, really neat! As for the drone laws, could it be that some of the restricted regions around Huoyanshan changed? I triple checked the official map from the CAA and the entire area around is marked as green now. I felt that maybe it was a local law from the ones in charge of that area but then Alishan is marked as restricted/red so I feel like that can't be it either. Just curious before I head out there eventually and ran into trouble. 😅
Thanks for your great comment. Yes, the restriction zones seem to always change and get updated. I had a check now as well, and it seems like that whole area is now a green zone. I've once applied for a special permission permit to fly in Kenting, and then the local office there said it's ok, I can just fly, and I don't have to worry about the permit or anything. So, I'm not too sure how these restrictions are implemented and who checks up, but I think it's best to be safe and follow the rules.
@@discovertaiwanwithjohan Hmm all right. Well I try to always follow the rules or at least fly in a safe manner if none exist. Anyway, thanks for the update! ✌️
Buddhism, Christianity, Islam…how does each perform under Autocratic vs Democratic Rule as another segment ? I would expect a larger public defense of such a historically religious symbol as the Swastika if it was falsely denigrated. Thank you Johan, your piece points a way.
Thanks for your insight, Thomas. It's definitely something to think about.

Yes, it seems like this has only been a later decision by the Buddhist communities in Taiwan. If you visit some old Buddhist temples in Taiwan, you might find some Swastikas in different directions. Especially when it’s used as decoration pattern. See 0:53 min into the video, window display. In other countries like Vietnam, you will find the Buddhist and Hindu swastika in all directions.
you forgot sun moon lake cable car to Taiwan Formosa theme park.
Yes, you are right! Thanks for mentioning it. That is also one of my favorite activities there! I love that new Spanish style water theme park and the roller-coaster where your feet hangs freely. Maybe worth a video on its own, or a video about the theme parks of Taiwan.

These tunnels should be refurbished and used to defend Taiwan !!!!
That's a very good idea!
Sheltering underground will be essential for the Taiwanese military. From everything I’ve been reading, Taiwan has invested billions over the decades in building numerous enormous underground complexes, with miles and miles of tunnels. One was in the news today that has the ability to store, arm and service 200 fighter jets, as well as the personal and supplies required to complete such a task. Great video, truly fascinating and beautiful country!
@@j.brendenstookey3437 that's very interesting. I guess with new technology and the latest demands for underground tunnels, it's just easier for the Taiwanese military to build new tunnels and bunkers, rather than refurbishing old ones. Who knows what's actually going on underground in Taiwan? There might be giant bunkers that's just been kept secret all over the island.
Nice video. One suggestion: Your girlfriend is easy to look at, but you really should let her talk some more.
Thank you . Yes, I totally agree. PS: Actually, my wife 🤣
How is that decathlon dry bag holding up ?planning to buy one as well
Surprisingly, still holding up nicely. I used it again last weekend. I've looked at some other more well known brands and thought of buying something nicer the day that the Decathlon bag gives me issues, but it's still working well after two years of abuse and those orange straps around the back is great for tying extra things on. I think it's the best piece of gear I've bought from Decathlon. I do put smaller dry bags inside for my electronic gear. The SeaToSummit 20L bags are nice. I have 3 of them. One is for the sleeping bag and the other 2 for electronics and clothing.
Appreciate your time !!!! Definitely gonna get one !!
