1983 Chevrolet Celebrity Diesel Update and owning an odd car
Motorcycles..."whatever"!? excuse me sir!
Many familiar delights there - the Corvairs (I love that green 67) and that’s a super Traction Avant. Nice Saab, good to see the Rambler again, nice Bus, and very glad the Renault 8 is there, that’ll go well with the 2CV. Lots of other delights too
Is there any major problems with this engine that I should know about. I’m asking because i might buy a 93 with the same engine. I’m not familiar with Chevy I’m a Dodge Cummins guy. Is this engine a Duramax Diesel?
The harmonic balancer will start coming apart and can break the crank. Head gaskets if it's been treated not so well. The cdr or crank case vent can plug up and cause excessive blow bow. Injection pumps are touchy with the modern diesel so I always run a fuel lubricidy additive. And knowing the limits of the engine. It's not fast and sure ain't a Cummins or a modern diesel. If you treat it with respect and don't push the hell out of it they are good and get really good fuel mileage. I tow with mine all the time and it does great.
Where did you find the pump?
I subbed because of the Colony Park as I was keen to get one off a mate. Didn't realise you also had a squarebody suburban (I have an 89 burb)
A cool eclectic mix. Glad to see you posting often again. The 535i vid you did years back is what I stumbled upon. Always admired those cars and especially with an m30
Thank you. I've worked at it for a long time and just can't stay away from the odd stuff. I'm going to order all the stuff I need for the BMW. I seriously miss the M30, it's such an outstanding car. After dealing with to much crap in life I'm going to focus on trying to make a bunch more videos on here. Thanks for watching!!
Matt's off-road recovery, Matt really loves corvairs
That he does. Always loved his Channels and seeing all the corvairs around the place
Those seats look amazing. Gotta ditch that aftermarket head unit...this car is screaming for a Blaupunkt Hamburg!
I totally agree!
Exciting progress Cary!!
Thanks. It's been a lot of work. And countless more hours ahead
127k on b m20b27 wow that’s barely broken in. Absolute tank of an engine
Yeah seriously
Hell yea m20 (lack of) power!
Low on power but a decent cruiser
Wow you really are doing it throughly. Definitely agree a new frame, looking at the chassis. It’ll be worth it, you’ll have a great useable little car there and have saved a 2CV rarity
Yes i agree. And its going to be a fantastic and fun car when it's all restored. And having an AZAM just makes it that much better.
That’s deliciously solid and rot free. Great series
I’m pretty certain it’s a 425cc 18bhp, I have the Azam6 M4 602cc 22bhp as my daily. However you guys got the Ami6 at this time so a swap might’ve happened. If she was a Belgian Azam6 she would have different quarter panel turn signal lights and the lenses on the front turn signals would be amber - the clear ones are cooler and AZAM Export April-August 67 (made in France) only. It’s a fabulous car and I would love to have it, especially the US spec with the bigger headlights, which are cartoon adorable, as with say, a US spec NSU Prinz
Yeah it probably is. And I agree, the big headlights are goofy but I love it.
At its time this Caddy with the 4.3 V6 Diesel was such an underrated luxury car. It had a very good mileage and a lot torque at low rpm!😊
Export is not specific to the US-spec model: all the last AZAM (from April to August 1967) were called AZAM Export even in France. The "export" name was suggesting a higher quality version: models made to be exported in other countries were often better appointed and equipped to be more attractive. But some manufacturers used this appellation on their own national market for higher-spec versions, Citroën and Renault in France with the 2CV AZAM-Export and the R4 Export, VW in Germany with the "Beetle" Export... The AZAM-Export is incredibly rare even in Europe, it is more than certainly unique in the United States I didn't even think that the 2CV was still sold in the United States in 1967: most sources speak of 1965 as the last year for American 2CVs. Is it possible that yours was sold new in Canada?
I did know about the meaning of Export and having higher levels of trim and touches. I'm the third owner of the car and the lady that I bought it from acquired it from the original owner who bought it new in the states. I didn't get much more history from her but that is what she told me.
I am having my timing chain assembly replaced due to the mileage (75k) - since the mechanic is already doing a bunch of labor to get this done, what else would you recommend he replace while he has the motor exposed (ie - water pump, cams and cam bearings, plugs, etc)?
My cousin bought a new Oldsmobile Cutlass with the same engine. Basically the Oldsmobile version of the celebrity. The engine was replaced 3 times under warranty.
Wow. I've heard similar stories, and I've heard stories of them going 200k + with no issues so totally hit or miss
The vinyl top IS NOT OKAY - you need to strip it - and quick! In the meantime keep the car dry... 1:20 Look at the lower corner of the window. THAT IS RUST underneath the vinyl Rip it off the car at the first opportunity and inspect what the metal is like under it * be gentle with the trim pieces
One of my High School buddies & me had one in 1960. These could actually out-accelerate the Honda 250 twins & were very tourney. We had about an 8-mile ride to school & we discovered that screw that holds the Bullet end of the muffler on, simply pull it out & you had dual megaphone exhaust pipes & @ about 55 mph, they would VIBRATE your chest. It was Really loud fun days, they were.
very few other cars ride as well as these caddies over bumpy pockmarked segmented pavement.
Totally agree
What size is the hose ?
I love my 93 it has a 5 speed woth a 4.3 in it
I just put in a new intake manifold and replaced the carb to get rid of all those vacuum tubes. Huge difference and my truck had sat for 20 years as well. Radiator, all belts etc,, replaced, mine had 113,000 on it, but feels nice and tight as well. Once you get the kinks worked out, you'll have a great truck and if you still have it that's most likely what you've ended up with!
How did you get the hose off the timing cover?
Where do you get parts for this? I need to change valves on mine
Looks good for a 41yr old car. That styling seems more 60s, 70s yet it's an early 80s car!
What was that hum before starting
The air pump for the rear suspension
This would drive my ass nuts!
Bro it’s a cool feature, it even says thank you
I think its charming, and a really wild technology.
😂😂😂😂SOOO funny this car for sale,,love it,,when first met my wife, she was just 15, yr, old & with her mother in this same kind of car & color 😂😂,,in 85 yes we still married 😂😂🎉🎉
Isuzu
Nice Truck!
Thanks!
Nice S-10 have always loved square body S-10's since my late father bought one new in 1982. Factory 5 speed Tahoe package. Looks like you are in New Mexico - may favorite state!
Would love to see some pedal pumping with the trashed DCs 😉
Jesus. This brings back memories. My parent’s drove a blue 83 celebrity diesel. The sound and the smell. We used to call it the “rattle and stink” car.
That pretty much sums it up, hahaha
Jealous. This is a rare piece of history. The 4.3s were pretty durable.
I owned '78 & a '79. I miss them both. Some people mistaked them for small shopping centers!
More station wagon content! Love working on my LTD wagon 🔥🔪🔥
put that rabbit badge on bruh😂
Fuel gauge on empty
Hi, great detailed video. However, I don't have a parts car. Where can I get a new latch. Or is there a way of fixing the broken latch?
Your parking brake is on, sir
3.8 radiator for 87 cutlass ciera might swap in and they are available.
Is the car sold ?
Yes Its sold
I have a 1960 American 2 door love it drives like new has 62 k miles good luck on your build
Nice! Seems like a fun driver. We've had several NM Saabs, all much newer classic 900 Turbo Convertibles, autos and manuals.
How cool. I'd love someday to get a 5 speed 900 turbo.
What is the name of the website that you find parts for your motorcycle?
Damn man you missed crucial steps that I needed to watch 🤦 when you're video cut out
New here. I'm a sucker for old Saabs. So yes, this got my attention. I like Volvos. But Saab's are more me. Weird and quirky. Love the fact this one is the wagon. So rare and cool. Most Saabs I've seen are of the hatchback variety. Awesome project. Cant wait to see more. 😊
Thanks for watching!! And yes it's weird and wonderful which is why I love it so much.
That's a brilliant Saab..fun project car.
