    • @jswcentral
      @jswcentral 24 дня назад

      Yes, it is a very early hack, indeed. Apparently, it was created by R. D. Foord Software (of which little is known, I believe) back in 1985. What's more, it was probably the first Manic Miner game that looked significantly different from the original MM. However, it was not known to a wider public until March 2005, when it was published on TZX Vault.

    • @jswcentral
      @jswcentral 27 дней назад

      Yes, only the first five rooms are modified, the remaining 15 are the same as in the original "Manic Miner". It is controversial whether this 'product' should be considered a new game. That's why on the title screen I called it 'Craig Rothwell's modification of five rooms in Matthew Smith's "Manic Miner" ' rather than 'a game by Craig Rothwell'. However, Craig did create a truly modified game later on, for the DOS platform. Please see web.archive.org/web/20011015023227/www.cdworld.co.uk/craig/jsmw.html for more info.

      According to the Readme, "The title screen and in-game tunes are both 'borrowed' from Richard Hallas' Join the Jet-Set!, both tunes originally being in-game tunes". Now, "Join the Jet-Set!" features a selection of 10 in-game tunes. I believe the in-game tune from this game which has been used as the title-screen tune in "Jet-Set Willy (again)" is tune No. 9, which - according to the list by Richard Hallas, the author of "Join the Jet-Set!" (www.hallas.net/Software/jtjs.htm ) - is "American Patrol". Now that's this march, I believe: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Patrol . Please see (hear) if that sounds correct to you and let us know what you think! 🙂

    So it's essentially a remix - each room is arranged differently from the original, but enemies remain the same.

    • @jswcentral
      @jswcentral 3 месяца назад

      Yes, the game features significant modifications to the screen layouts, including some brand-new rooms, while almost all of the guardian sprites and paths, as well as the majority of cell patterns (building blocks), remain unchanged from the original JSW (the author explained on his website that he "couldn't work out how to use the guardian editor" - web.archive.org/web/20040623063813/www.aldridge98.fsnet.co.uk/jsw1-1.html ). It is worth noting that this was Nick Aldridge's first JSW game, out of the five that he created between 2000 and 2003. In his second and third game, "JSW Stupid" and "JSW dup moor en t' panat", the guardians are also unmodified, while in his fourth and fifth game, "JSW: The Sun Is No Longer Producing Heat" and "Mr Top Hat", both guardian sprites and paths are completely modified.

      @@jswcentral I only saw 2 new rooms, and they were beyond the Yatch going far left, or the Off-Licence going far right. Maybe those rooms were in the original code, but inaccessible to the player.

    • @jswcentral
      @jswcentral 3 месяца назад

      @ThePathStrider No, the two rooms you've mentioned are not in the original code. When I referred to "some brand-new rooms", I wasn't referring to their "geographical" location on the game map, but rather to how much they are modified from the original ones. For me, a "brand-new room" is one that you wouldn't recognize if you didn't know its place on the map (and if you didn't look at it in an editor, which would allow you to see its technical number). In other words, it's a room that's so dissimilar to the original room (the room with the same technical number in the original "JSW") that you couldn't guess which original room it was created from (or: in place of which original room it was created). For me, in "JSW 1-1", the following rooms fulfil this criterion (their technical numbers are given in brackets): the unnamed rightmost room on the map that you've mentioned (06), "Sea" (09) - which is the leftmost room on the map that you've mentioned, "Treehouse" (13), "Hidden treasure" (45), "Willy's guilty secret" (46), "Back yard (take the rubbish out)" (47) and "Escape velocity" (50). Furthermore, "Leafy lane (04)" probably also falls into this category, as does "Front door" (10) (but you could identify this one by the name), plus "Cold storage" (25) and "Trademan's entrance" (53) might qualify as well (although again, their names betray their origin).

    • @ThePathStrider
      @ThePathStrider 3 месяца назад

      @@jswcentral I haven't seen the original code, and probably wouldn't understand it if I did, so everything I'm saying is speculation. But yes, MY definition of NEW ROOM would have been places outside the map of the original game. Jet Set Willy 2 was full of them.

    • @jswcentral
      @jswcentral 3 месяца назад

      @@ThePathStrider You can both see and understand the original code 🙂- an excellent complete disassembly of the original "JSW", by Richard Dymond, is available at skoolkit.ca/disassemblies/jet_set_willy/ (in Decimal) and at skoolkit.ca/disassemblies/jet_set_willy/hex/index.html (in Hex). As for defining a new room as one that's outside the map of the original game, it makes sense for a game that expands on the original while still preserving the original rooms, like "JSW II" did. However, there are games that replicate the layout of the original "JSW" but where all the rooms are modified so extensively (or, in fact, created from scratch) that they no longer resemble the original rooms. In such cases, judging the 'newness' of the room based on the map won't do justice to the game in question. Consider, for example, Paul Equinox Collins's "It's Wet Jelly" ( jswcentral.org/jsw48-a-47_wetjelly.html ). It pretty much reflects the layout of the original "JSW" (here's a map: maps.speccy.cz/map.php?id=JetSetWillyItsWetJelly ) and includes four additional rooms (64 compared to the original 60 in "JSW"). However, all of the rooms have been edited (or created from scratch) to the point where they have nothing in common with the original JSW rooms that occupy the same positions on the map. According to your definition, you would have to say the game has 4 new rooms (the additional ones that stick out of the original map). That would be a gross underestimate, as the game evidently has 64 new rooms - they are all completely different from the original ones, so why would you not consider them new rooms? In its entirety, "It's Wet Jelly" is definitely a new game (not merely a remix), although it nods to the original "JSW" with deftly anagrammed room names.

      The main character is indeed smaller than Willy, which allows it - thanks to the pixel-based detection collision used in the game - to squeeze in between guardians where a "standard-sized" Willy couldn't make it. It is also a prime example of a game that uses a Jet Set Willy game engine (JSW64 in this case), but has nothing to do with "Jet Set Willy" whatsoever as far as the protagonist or the story is concerned. Videos of three more versions of the game will follow in the weeks to come.

      Thank you for your kind words! 🙂 On the main list of MM and JSW games for the ZX Spectrum on JSW Central (jswcentral.org/list.html#ListofJSW48games ), there are currently: 22 MM games, 56 new JSW48 games, 6 'advanced modifications' and 5 'artistic modifications' using the JSW48 game engine, 2 JSWII games, 18 JSW128 games, 24 JSW64 games, and 15 "Willy games" using other game engines. That's a total of 148 items if you just sum them up. Of course, the number of videos that should be made from them is higher, as some of the games have different versions or editions that deserve to be presented separately. The next video I will post will be no. 140. So far, I have only been presenting walkthroughs of new games from the main list I mentioned at the start of this post. I will continue this until they are all showcased, which should happen around video no. 180. After that, I will proceed to presenting the 'advanced modifications,' 'artistic modifications,' and selected "Versions and minor mods of the original Jet Set Willy" (which are on a different list at www.jswcentral.org/jswminormods.html ) and "Versions and minor mods of the original Manic Miner" (listed separately at www.jswcentral.org/mmminormods.html ). So, there is still plenty of material to cover. Once all that is done, I will probably present walkthroughs of other platform games for the ZX Spectrum (like the ones from the incipient "Games of MM and JSW interest" list, jswcentral.org/othergames.html) , or walkthroughs of non-Spectrum versions of MM and JSW, or both. These are my plans, at least, and we shall see how much real life will allow me to implement them. There may be some interferences later this year, and I may not be able to keep up the weekly rhythm of new videos that I have established in the last few months. Hopefully, the channel will keep developing even if I have to slow things down a little bit for a while. Thanks again for your continued support, which makes this effort worthwhile! 👍

    What nightmarish version of MM is this?!

    • @jswcentral

      "Manic Miner: Neighbours - Allana Truman" is a MM game based on the Australian television soap opera "Neighbours", focusing on plots involving the game's author's favourite character from the show, Allana Truman. According to the author, Andrew Broad, the game was written for advanced MM players, featuring rooms intended to be fairly difficult, a challenge to the experts. The gameplay is tougher than in the original MM, requiring manual dexterity (a need for pixel-perfect and time-frame-perfect accuracy of movement), lateral thinking and a good knowledge of the so-called quirky features of the game engine. Please refer to jswcentral.org/mm15_neighbours.html and the documentation enclosed in the release ZIP package for more info.

      The truth is that all of the walkthroughs shown on this channel have been recorded by a pretty ordinary human being... yours truly 🙂 . The secret is a feature called 'Rollback', which allows the player - when playing and recording a ZX Spectrum game on an emulator - to insert cue points and - if the player makes a mistake or wants to improve their performance in some way - to roll the recording back to the last cue point and start again from there. In this way, you get an infinite amount of tries and can bring your performance as near perfection as you wish. With Rollback, it’s perfectly possible for a human being to record a near-perfect walkthrough of a MM game, but - especially in case of more difficult games - it’s a very labour-intensive and time-consuming task. Some manoeuvres have to be repeated many times, even dozens of times to get them just right, which can take a LONG time. However, the result is what you see in these videos - and, hopefully, it's pleasing to the eye 🙂 .

      @@jozinzbazin3818 Przyznam, że nie za bardzo rozumiem pytanie. Masz kod źródłowy - ale na jaką platformę? Ja się zajmuję głównie grami na ZX Spectrum, więc jeżeli Twoje pytanie dotyczy innej platformy, prawdopodobnie nie będę mógł Ci pomóc. Czy mówiąc o "obrazie ładowania" masz na myśli to, co po angielsku nazywa się "loading screen" - obrazek, który pokazywał się, kiedy gra wgrywała się przez kilka czy kilkanaście minut z magnetofonu? Jeżeli tak, to w strukturze pliku w formacie używanym na PC do emulacji ZX Spectrum, czyli najczęściej TAP albo TZX, blok, który zawiera grafikę obrazu ładowania, może być albo rodzaju SCREEN$ (wówczas zaczyna się od adresu 16384 i ma długość 6912 bajtów) - jeżeli obraz nie jest skompresowany, albo jest blokiem typu CODE (i może mieć różną długość i różny początek), jeżeli obraz jest skompresowany. Czy chodzi Ci o coś takiego, kiedy piszesz o "zmianie obrazu na postać DATA"?
