I just started splicing fiber in the Bay Area a couple years ago... I appreciate your content. I've always been curious about the daily life of the other side of fiber! Keep up the good work bro!
Do you get more for the job when you have to fix stuff
I know where that building is! Wild seeing places near my house on RUclips.
Another great video from the team. I'm always amazed how it looks like a ghost town where you guys are working.
That figure 8 and making sure there’s enough fiber is something I sure don’t miss😂
boy , some of those pulls you have to earn ! . Good locate and repair of someone else's trouble. wonder if that repair caused or cured someones fiber issues? Good job regardless!
'i think we have more problems than we know' oh how I have felt that
Great video! Great to see people troubleshooting a problem and the steps they took to solve.
Nice work! Enjoying the longer videos.
👌
Wow the problem solving on this one was delicious!
You do a fantastic job explaining what's going on. Thank you. Makes the video much more enjoyable.
Some network engineer that had equipment on that orange conduit fiber line probably freaked out when all the sudden their light levels shot up when that fiber was straightened out haha
God some or I imagine most of those vaults are a fucking mess. Drives me nuts haha
What drill is that ??
20x22 series 2.
Nice work sir !! this was an awesome video !!
Thank you!
@@lifeasweknowit5280 Are you able to back charge this additional work you had to do outside of scope? Are these flat bid jobs, or T&M... I did not even realize you had to modify the occupied conduit in the 2nd repair.... WoW.. these services just push everything out of their way to fix their own problem (water line) and end up damaging fiber conduit in the process... What if they broke that orange conduit fiber line, then the service would have been screwed with a broken conduit as well as fiber, because the water department was careless... Seems like this is the world we live in now.,
Never seen that type of housing with no threads for the tri hawk. Is it pretty firm when trying to rock and steer or a little loose? Curious to know because I like how easy it looks to change different bit types.
It’s stiff, no play really between the housing and the adapter for the bit.
Bummer
How did you charge the customer for all the extra work?
We knew it was going to be a hard one so we charged the customer accordingly.
@@lifeasweknowit5280 Bid ahead of time or was it added to the price as it got worse?
No we had the price set before hand. The area is known for being a hard place to drill so we made sure to get enough before we started. Not all projects work out that way.
@@lifeasweknowit5280 That must be nerve wracking until the job is done and the costs analyzed.
Yeah it can be stressful.
Cool stuff! I just got fiber installed in my neighborhood about 5 months ago. I'm not familiar with the terminology, but I had noticed numerous of those squares (7:50) throughout or street. I found it funny when I found a traffic cone that was placed upside down in one of the holes they made between our mailboxes. But they came back within a day or so and got everything all patched up.
some days it goes , some days it comes back to you ....then other times is so soft you need MUD ! can't win them all tough old stone ! losing coffee money changing those carbide teeth
Truth! Ha ha
How do you bill something like this? Was it a fixed price quote or what?
Is rock always that big of a pain in the butt?
It depends on the type of rock but it’s usually a pain.
Those teeth were toasted while installing. Man why do you hit the top with hammer? It has a vidia point. Which cracked with first two stroke. After next to nothing operation the vidia insert fall out and left the hard steel them self. Get a guy with lathe and make a proper reverse cone shaped install tool. cheers
l live the other side of the word. I know you have most of wood housing. Here is everything stone or concrete. So it is well know here. However I have couple of friends, who are working tumbstones. They are properly hard. Nothing scratch it, except vidia. Saidly only a handful old tool-blacksmith left. They basicly died out.
Someone suggested using a brass hammer to install the teeth. I might have to try both.
Well I’ll be darned
I still build those hahaha
14:30, for a second I thought you potholed a rock haha
Does Zayo ever contract long hauls with yall?
if you grind the punch a little smaller its easier to get out after the teeth pop out.
Lawki, do you gets use GPR for any of your SUE to determine your drill path?
No, I’m not familiar with those technologies but they might be helpful!
Thanks LAWKI for showing the good , the bad and the at times ugly … kudos
If those teeth don’t spin freely u will go thru them a lot, I feel ur frustrations bro , The borzall head is so much easier and stronger
I LOVE your videos! Gives me insight into something that I use every day but would have no way of knowing how it comes to be if it wasn't for your content. Please keep at it!!
I'm not sure the rock bits are the same but my well driller uses a brass hammer on his to set them in his bit but also he used an air chisel with a round drift ro remove them (used the air compressor on the rig)
You guys really had your work cut out on this one, nice job! Hope the Chinese food was good.
It was very good!
Why stand on top of the drill head?
I had the same issues with that x3 housing , sure it’s easy change but they need to re engineer that head and housing. I use Borzall housing with an eagle claw bit . I drill in Utah a lot of rock
I’ll definitely look into the set up you use!
We had to send our X3 back to the factory because the roll pins kept falling out on me. Done a few challenging bores with it and have had better luck with it.
IDK if they sell it for vermeer but we use the tri-hawk system/head/dirt adapter/quick attach reamer and bit 5 and its pretty good shit. you should check it out
I will definitely look into it! Thank you. What part of the country do you work in?
@@lifeasweknowit5280 Im in the midwest, we dont deal with too much rock just limestone.
A bit of bad luck on that job but you guys made it look like a picnic, nice work!
Thank you! Thanks for watching.
We got that X3 housing with the gauntlet when we hit some rock. Definitely not as hard as what yall went through but it got our job done with no teeth broke. How was it getting the broke ones out? It seems like you may need something more than the gauntlet in that ground.
We used a punch and popped the teeth right out and replaced them fairly easily. I’m not impressed with that bit setup, definitely wouldn’t buy it again for that ground. Crazy thing is I went back to a paddle bit. That’ll be in the next few videos
Yeah I think that bit is meant for “softer” rock, not extremely hard rock or else it will break. Try using it in hard ground with no rock and see how it performs. They say you’re not supposed to go more than 5% with the head or else the pull back may get compromised. That screw with the metal does seem like a design flaw that attached the head and swivel, I’m not too fond of it.
How does the drill change direction, is there enough of a spoon on the end to turn the direction. Is it drilling a 4" hole a little bigger when it goes thru the ground and rock. 65 years old and still a kid at heart and likes to watch. thanks for the videos.
Yes you are right about the shape. And drilling that’s when it goes straight technically and then when you want to turn it, you put it in a position and push. Thanks for watching.
There is a bend in the bit. That bend changes if its a dirt paddle or a rock bit. Dirt paddle has more of a bend so we can steer better. There is a beacon inside the bore head called a sonde. It shows the locator the pitch and position of the head. The driller has a screen that shows some of what the locator can see on his locator. The sonde shows both a clock which is how we steer. Want to go right you push 3 want to go left push 9 and so on.
Used to live right next to Chautauqa, on bluebell. Lots of boulders on that hill, watched them trying to bore gas lines on bluebell up 15th to 14th, they ended up digging with a excavator.
That makes sense, there is a lot of rock in the ground.
Did they request the conduit colours? 😂
That’s the conduit they provided.
A lot easier when you dont have to worry about roads or pot holes.
I'd love to walk a day with y'all fiber installers as a network engineer/site reliability engineer. i'm in the denver metro lol
they are lucky they got fiber internet
