I don't know if k*lling is bad per se. I just don't like it personally. I am autistic, I dunno if this has anything to do with not being happy when I'm right.... Or maybe I'm depressed lol I dunno what's wrong with me. I don't feel bad either when I'm wrong :D

    I will always remember 2 things of my first play of Mass Effect. 1. The way I understood REALLY that my actions in the game as impact on others because Tali was the first one to die in ME2 and REFUSED to start ME3 without her 2. The 30 min cry I had when I finished the trilogy. And when I say 30 min. I MEAN 30 min. I will never understand how much Mass Effect has the impact it has on me. Even if I play others REALLY good games I just can't change the feeling I have with Mass Effect. It's the game that made me realize "damn video games can be THAT ?" I was only playing the sims at that time 😂 What a shook it was to see something so much more profound than a COD. Anyway. Thank you for that deep message that was so obvious but that I was unable to see until now. You made Mass Effect even more special to me 😊

    Salarians process emotions completely differently from humans, if you don’t acknowledge and understand that you can’t properly understand Mordin, and by extension his conscience and actions. That’s one of many reasons why Mass Effect’s “space racism” is endlessly fascinating, especially from moral questions like should we allow the Krogans, who are prone to violence and conquest by their very nature and biology, to exist and survive unchecked in the galaxy because of their inherent value as living, sapient, and intelligent beings? It’s also why it 100% fails as a parallel to human racism, because unlike humans of various genetic and cultural backgrounds being the same under the hood, and our individuality isn’t determined by our genetics and as such can’t be judged or discriminated based on race but only as individuals, Mass Effect’s aliens can and often do. A Krogan and an Asari are different on a fundamental level in addition to being individuals, even though we still innately expect them to act and appear human. I find it interesting that curing the Genophage and sabotaging the cure are both considered “paragon” actions depending on who leads the Krogan: Wrex or Wreav. The individual is to a certain degree still able to influence their own nature. It gets worse however, because Mass Effect also starts asking questions about the difference between organic life and synthetic “life,” which of course is the central conflict which drives the entire story. Every race, and more importantly to us every crew mate have vastly different opinions and views of all of this, and this makes them all supremely interesting. All of this plays into Mass Effect’s themes of death, and it all ends up being Shepards decision, meaning the players decision who is worthy of surviving, and thus also who has value. Because as Mass Effect makes abundantly clear: you can’t save everyone.

    I love how much thought and analysis you put into this. I think it’s spot on. I would love to hear your analysis of the Dragon Age series, especially with Veilguard coming out at the end of this month. It’s a bit different since each game has a new protagonist, so the storyline is a bit more disjointed (especially with the time jumps). But if you compare the similarities and differences in the 6 different origins you can choose from in the first game, the battle between mages and templars/chantry/rest of society, the conflict between elves and humans, between Tevinter and the rest of Thedas, etc, certain themes begin to take shape. Especially when we compare them to our world. Anyway, I would love to hear your thoughts on Dragon Age as well. Thank you for such an excellent analysis of my favorite trilogy of all time.

    at 01:19, the captions of what Fred is saying is English text written in the Greek alphabet that can be retranscribed as „I am not this Fred of o-ich [which.] you speak. I am the gloaming. The alfa [alpha.], the omega, I fortell [foretell.] the koming [coming.] of a great kylling [killing? culling?]. Let this be a powerful omen to those o-o [who.] doubt the end!“. interesting details about this Greek transcription are that: Greek ‹ω› (the omega) seems to be used to represent English ‹w›; ‹h› seems to be, for some reason, represented by a dash, which may be just a substitution for ‹ ̔ › (the rough breathing or the spiritus asper); ‹χ› seems to be used to represent ‹ch›; ‹θ› is used to represent ‹th› (it could have been mistakenly ‹τ-›); ‹ε› is used to represent ‹e›, regardless of whether it sounds like /i/, /e/ or /ε/; ‹φ› is used for both ‹f› and ‹ph› (I noticed in „αλφα“). that was my language nerd speech; I am now going to watch the rest of the video. have a good day. edit: typo. update: at 11:48, Fred says „Perish mortals! I am the harbinger of Ruin!“.

    Over the course of 2024 I have deleted my tiktok, reddit account and twitter account. Deleteing reddit and twitter were accidental booms to my mental health as I was doing those originally more as an act of protest. Tiktok was because I felt like I lost hours at a time out of nowhere in my day and that was time I felt was precious as my non work time. I didn't want to go through each weekend thinking nothing in my life had changed or got done. Interestingly I felt the same with alcohol last year so I quit that too. I felt that every weekend was a loop of get drunk with friends, feel compelled to stay up or keep drinking till my close friends were done too and then spend a day or two recovering. Nothing getting achieved over and over. Its not like I'm saying I have noble goals for my free time, but I do want it to be mine. The things I think about before I go to bed, or daydream at work about. It could be as simple as completing a challenge in a game I like, or studying something I'm curious about. Those are what I want to do instead of commiting my time to the void. I actually feel closer to my teenage self now as a 28 year old than I have in my adult life. Like my personality is back. I think human curation is a great idea. While you may have had that parasocial moment over twitter before, using your new website as an oppertunity to do your own human curation may allow others to do the same for your content including those your social media brain feels they missed out on.

    i would love to see more focus on non-lethal secrefice. A whole lifes hard work for a good course in stead of going out in a blaze of glory. I think its over gloryfied for males to strive for the "short blaze of glory". I find the sacrifise of Liara T'soni staying on the ship as the shadowbroker for the good of others but at her own isolation a mush more relatable and noble sacrifice instead of the short and brave but stupid sacrifise of "taking a bullet for the president or trowing yourself into a mass effect beam". IN SHORT I THINK LIVING AND WORKING FOR A GOOD COURSE I BRAVER AND MORE INTERESTING THAN DYING FOR A GOOD COURSE.

    I dont usually comment on videos but i recently played mass effects whole trilogy for the first time ever. I never had the money for a console growing up so PC legendary edition now is my first experience. For all of the critiques I have of the games, never at the end of a story in any video game prior did I end in such a deep emotional fugue state. I played a Paragon FemShepherd, I romanced Liara (basic i know but she really endeared herself to me) and the end of this story is so... poetic in a way. Its a true pyrrhic victory, yes Shepherd wins, but even with the seceet ending where they potentially survive-- that win comes at such a high cost. Even in the best scenario you sacrifice so much and thats stuck with me because typically heroes kill bad guy and have a happy ending. And it doesnt happen this time. Idk all i know is im in an emotional fog after finishing this series for the first time haha.

    What sucks is RUclips is my brain trap, and it's unfortunately where most of my actual education comes from. I was not good in school, but I watched videos on hard subjects: sciences, philosophy, engineering, life skills, political theory, and I legitimately learned how to be a better human. It also taught me soft skills: how to paint, to spin wool, to identify plants. But now it's tinged with the shorts, and I spend hours staring at thousands of video clips that I can't possibly remember. It's like having a dysfunctional parent. They can teach you a lot about life, but they're constantly undercut by bad choices.

    I'm a developer (in local government but owning my extremely online position) but i don't understand how returning to web 1 helps discovery issues. by which i mean "how do i find you and cj the x if social networks in any form no longer exist?" i liked the internet as a kid and teen but i was on platforms where you didn't really talk to anyone, and only really made connections with the advent of the social web. corporations suck but there are loads of efforts to do many-to-many non evil social media... do you think that's wasted energy or not the goal or did i misunderstand you? thanks so much for the video!

    • @chriswaves
      @chriswaves 16 дней назад

      oh I'm not saying get rid of all social media, but rather while we work on healthier alternatives, we can incorporate some web 1.0 sensibilities into our online lives to have a healthier balance. efforts to create non-addictive social media are definitely not wasted. with regards to discovery, that cj article points out the use of webrings and newsletters, which I like quite a lot. the other idea is to use existing social media to make connections, but then try to bring those connections off-platform; websites, forums, whathaveyou. and I'm a huge sucker for neocities.org, which I think does a great job with regards to discovery!
